E-Scooters Not as Green as They Seem?

Recent study complicates understanding of e-scooters’ environmental impact.

By Kai McNamee After taking Santa Monica and Los Angeles by storm, shared electric scooters were touted by many as a solution to the climate crisis. Bird and Lime, two of the largest producers of dockless e-scooters, both market their services as a way to reduce carbon emissions in urban settings. But a recent study published by researchers at North Carolina State University suggests that these devices aren’t as environmentally friendly as they might seem.

The study found the majority of the scooters’ greenhouse gas emissions — the chemicals responsible for global warming — come from the initial manufacture of scooters, and the vehicles people use to collect and distribute them during the charging process.

Jeremiah Johnson, a co-author of the study and Associate Professor at NC State, explained that the study analyzes the scooters’

“cradle to grave” impacts through a process called life cycle assessment. “The work that we do uses a tool called life cycle assessment to quantify environmental impacts, particularly to quantify hidden aspects of environmental impacts that might be a little bit less obvious,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s team found that the baseline electric scooter produces the equivalent of 202 grams of carbon dioxide per passenger-mile. This measurement accounts for the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the scooters’ manufacture, transport, collection and distribution. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, driving a typical automobile produces over 400 grams of carbon dioxide per mile.

While riding a scooter is significantly better for the environment than driving a car, surveys show that scooter use frequently replaces walking — in these cases, scooter use replaces a significantly greener mode of transit.

The researchers surveyed 61 riders in Wake County, North Carolina and analyzed survey data published by the Portland Bureau of Transportation to determine the replacement effects of shared scooters. The study reported that 49 percent of survey respondents would have biked or walked had e-scooters not been available, and 11 percent would have taken a public bus.

In January, the City of Santa Monica conducted its own study, surveying approximately 3,000 scooter riders. The Santa Monica survey found 50 percent of scooter rides replaced a car trip, 37 percent of rides replaced walking, and 3.8 percent of rides replaced a bus trip.

In a big win for public safety in Brentwood as fire season approaches, the City of Los Angeles’s Innovation and Performance

Commission voted in favor of a Solar Powered Emergency Wifi network pilot program that will allow the City’s entire emergency response infrastructure -- including Shake LA and Notify LA -- to communicate with residents via wifi during a power outage.

The pilot grants $200,000 from the City of LA’s Innovation Fund to the City Emergency Management Department for

solar-powered communication equipment, community outreach, integration with the Shake LA mobile app and other ITA systems, and a year’s worth of quarterly testing and maintenance.

“Mike was eager to support the pilot program and has been proud to work with neighbors to better protect our neighborhoods from a natural disaster,” reads Coun-

“The pilot area will cover five miles of the Mandeville Canyon area, where there is a potential of a loss of communication during a major disaster.”

Hazardous Material Under VA Housing Site Work resumes on site after delays.

By Sam Catanzaro At the city, county and federal level, progress is underway in creating housing for veterans in need.

Over the summer, work has continued in Brentwood, where the City of Los Angeles, LA County, and U.S Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) are partnering to build temporary bridge housing for 100 veterans on the interior of the Brentwood VA Campus.

According to Councilmember Mike Bonin, contractors recently completed removing hazardous material found underneath the site this month, allowing construction on the remainder of the site to continue.

Brentwood News has reached out to Bonin’s office seeking more details about the hazardous materials found, but at the time of publishing have not received a response.

Once complete, the site will include two 40’ x 120’ tension membrane structures and modular trailers, which will be located within the VA campus near existing buildings and services.

The site will offer roughly 100 beds for currently homeless veterans, as well as storage for residents, personal hygiene and laundry facilities, supportive and community engagement services, and 24-hour security.

workers will begin building trust with people experiencing homelessness, so people currently living in encampments in Venice, as well as veterans experiencing homelessness on the Westside, will be ready to move in when the facilities both open later this year,” said Councilmember Mike Bonin.

This bridge housing facility will be temporary — and not to be visible from the exterior of the campus — as the VA constructs out its Draft Master Plan, which will provide 1200 units of permanent supportive housing on the campus.

The facility was expected to open in early 2019, but crews experienced a delay on the site when they uncovered old pipes that needed special attention as the site was prepared for the temporary structures.

In addition, mud from the rainy winter and asbestos that was discovered hindered the project.

Across the street at the West Los Angeles National Guard Armory, plans have been submitted to the federal government to build a bridge housing center there for non-veteran homeless individuals in the area.

EVALUATING THE REAL PROBLEMS FROM YOUR PHYSICAL INSPECTIONS

When a buyer goes under contract to purchase a piece of property, it is advisable to have contingencies for inspections and for financing, if needed. The most important contingency is the inspection contingency which is part of your due diligence. The goal is to inspect a property and learn as much about it as you can before your deposit becomes non-refundable. You want to in advance, ask questions of the seller to know if there are any defects they are aware of or any repairs or modifications they have made that may lead you in a direction of detecting hidden problems. Perhaps you may want to talk with the neighbors as well, or find out more about a suspicious hillside that could have a drainage problem, for example.

There are many kinds of inspections one can do depending on the property. Perhaps your general physical inspection, (which is the first inspection you will do) will make recommendations for further investigation.

Some of those recommendations could be a geological inspection if there is a hillside, a drainage inspection if there is suspected drainage problems, an environmental inspection if there are suspected environmental issues, which might include asbestos, a chimney inspection, and/or sewer inspection, and/or swimming pool inspection.

There are many inspections that can be done on a residential property but they are not always necessary depending on the nature of the property. Expect to spend anywhere from $1,000-$3,000 on inspections.

Many things might come up that you really need not be concerned with. I generally tell my clients to categorize inspection issues that come up. One category is deferred maintenance. The second category is improvements needed, but not urgent. The third category is code violations and urgently needed repairs. When it comes to urgently needed repairs and code violations, you need to be savvy and know these are things that need to be dealt with, one way or another. Some things are small and incidental.

A roof that needs to be replaced is no small

item. Also a sewer line that is cracked and emitting sewage into the ground is a big deal. The biggest concern when you are purchasing a residential property is; drainage and environmental issues. Once a property has a mold issue, you could be in for a long process to eliminate that mold not knowing how much it will cost or if it’s even possible.

The things to be most tuned in on are; environmental issues and mold, moisture, condensation, drainage issues, and hillside issues. If you have an unstable hillside and there is earth movement that could cause a hillside to give way, you are asking for trouble unless that is dealt with immediately the cost to remedy a hillside slide could be devastating and may not be covered by insurance. One strong rain lasting 3 or 4 consecutive days could cause a lot of problems and if you do not take precautions upfront to stabilize the hillside, the problem could all come down on your shoulders. It could be an issue for the seller as well, if he did not reveal previous problems in his disclosures.

In conclusion, make sure to have thorough inspections and make sure to study the real estate transfer disclosure that is supplied to you by the seller. Ask appropriate questions and study all other due diligence.

How Woodstock Really Came About As told by someone who really knows.

Founding Publisher There has been a lot of buzz lately about the 50th anniversary of Woodstock.

I know someone who not only was actually at Woodstock – but he was one of the chief organizers. His name is John Morris. He lives in Malibu.

John Morris and several members of the original Woodstock team gathered at the Grammy Museum in Downtown Los Angeles the other night to preview a documentary movie, “Creating Woodstock”, produced by Mick Richards and Eric Morris.

John Morris, in his thirties at the time of the festival, was head of production, in charge of booking the bands and running the stage.

The field at Max Yasgur’s farm was already filled with 50,000 people the day before the event.

This was before a perimeter fence, along with the ticket booths, could be completed.

A hard choice had to be made: Finish the fence or finish the stage?

Stage it was.

It was Morris’s voice that famously called out to the crowd that the concert was now free.

“It was just stating the obvious,” said Morris.

The rest, as they say, is history: Richie Havens, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills and Nash, Joan Baez, The Who, Arlo Guthrie, Santana – the list goes on and on.

For three days, 500,000 people somehow survived traffic jams, rain, wind, sun – and each other.

“We suddenly found ourselves in the city running business, not the concert running business,” said one of the organizers.

Distributing food and water to the huddled masses became a massive challenge – but everyone pitched in and somehow it all came together – aided by John Morris talking to the crowd, spreading good vibes – keeping everyone mellow.

Readily available marijuana probably didn’t hurt.

What many don’t realize is that it was a group of very young, very inexperienced individuals who organized Woodstock. Two trust fund babies in their twenties, John Roberts and Joel Rosenman, along with Michael Lang and Artie Kornfield, thought it would be cool to put on a big, outdoor concert – the likes of which the world had never seen.

The original location, 50 miles away, got nixed by city fathers. Things seemed hopeless, but a few days later, Max Yasgur, who was following the news of the concert’s trials and tribulations, called to invite the organizers to check out his farm. It was an immediate “yes.”

Those building the stage and setting up the

electricity, sound and lights had to get paid extra in order to finish on time. When the event started, helicopters had to be rented so the bands wouldn’t get stuck in traffic.

The festival’s losses ran around $3 million, but the two financial backers swore they would make everyone whole. Proceeds from the original “Woodstock” film allowed organizers to eventually retire all debts. It took ten years, but they did it.

For several years now, some friends and I have relived all this through John Morris. He always has yet another story to tell.

Our parents had D-Day; we had Woodstock.

Our parents had Dwight Eisenhower; we’ve got John Morris.

I remember that summer. I was 17, living in Palo Alto, California. I was getting ready to enter my senior year in high school. Two childhood friends, Peter and Greg Moore, were visiting from Massachusetts that summer. Their parents and my parents had been lifelong friends, as well. Peter and Greg – “the twins” had a friend, Brad Hockmeyer, with them.

The three of them told me I simply HAD to jump in the car with them and make the six-day drive from Palo Alto to Bethel in Upstate New York for the most amazing concert that would ever take place in the history of humankind -- Woodstock.

As they rattled off all the band names, I realized I had seen them all before. Growing up in Palo Alto in the late sixties gave my friends and me regular access to the Filmore

and other San Francisco concert halls. The “Summer of Love” (1967 in Haight-Ashbury), was still fresh in my memory.

Many bands that got their starts in the Bay Area actually played at my high school – before they got discovered. If memory serves, Jefferson Airplane and Santana both played at my school’s gym.

So I thought anyone who would drive six days just to see a rock concert had to be a little crazy, and I passed. A week later, when I saw what was unfolding on the news, I was kicking myself.

But, because I know John Morris, I’ve been able to hear all the tales, from all different angles – the drugs, the sex, the money – or lack thereof – and of course, the music.

Brentwood Library BCC Highlights Aug. 14 Silver Anniversary

Last month a star of the Brentwood community celebrated a big birthday.

On July 21, the Donald Bruce Kaufman - Brentwood Branch - Los Angeles Public Library celebrated 25 years of serving the Brentwood community.

Named after the co-founder of Kaufman and Broad, Donald Bruce Kaufman, the library was opened to the public on July 17, 1994.

The library, located at 11820 San Vicente Boulevard, may not be the largest or grandest in Los Angeles, but its selection of books, DVDs, CDs,

cozy space, workspaces and conference rooms are beloved by the Brentwood community. In addition to regular programming such as a Spanish Conversation Class, an Adult Non-fiction book club, as well as film screenings, the Brentwood Community Council (BCC) utilizes the space for its monthly board meetings that are open to the public and a place of invaluable public discourse.

Among those in attendance at the July 20 celebration, hosted by Friends of the Brentwood Library, were Councilmember Mike Bonin and patrons and friends of the branch who enjoyed a magic show from Joshua G the Master Illusionist.

The highlight of the Brentwood Community Council (BCC) meeting held Wednesday, Aug. 14, was a presentation by representatives of LAMetro, who discussed public transportation options that would connect the San Fernando Valley to LAX. There would be a stop in or near Brentwood, in between the Valley and LAX. Options presented ranged from underground tunneling to heavy rail to light rail – and a monorail that would go down the middle of the 405.

The two leftmost lanes heading in both directions (north and south) on the 405 have already been set aside for bus lanes – making it difficult to contemplate squeezing in a monorail, according to the LAMetro spokesperson.

But since no construction has started, it might be possible to reconsider the bus lanes and go in the direction of a monorail, instead.

But the monorail option is still tricky, according to LAMetro, because pillars that would hold up the monorail could create visibility issues for freeway drivers down

below, especially in curvy stretches.

When compared side by side, a blended option that included tunneling, heavy rail and light rail – but no monorail – seemed to provide the most bang for the buck in terms of ridership, ride time and cost.

A Metro station will be built near Veteran and Wilshire. That plan has already been approved, and this stop will provide a way for veterans from across the region to get to and from the VA. It’s likely the North-South Valley-toLAX plan would include a stop at this new station near the VA – unless the EastWest line from Downtown to the Westside gets extended, with an additional stop at Wilshire and Bundy, which many hope will come about.

If a station gets built at Wilshire and Bundy, LAMetro might move its North-South San Fernando Valley to LAX stop there (Wilshire and Bundy) instead of the VA. There are many details to work out, including finding the money. Even if all goes as planned, it will take decades to complete all this.

Is there a way to find out about locations and floor plans for homes under construction?

Homes that are completed are usually offered on MLS, Zillow and Redfin, however, homes in the early stages of construction are not publicly advertised. Due to recent building code changes in Los Angeles, there are specific guidelines limiting square footage and also limiting how many feet and what percentage of the total square footage can be allocated to the second story. A buyer is in most cases going to want some usable backyard so it would not be attractive or desirable to build a maximum size one story home leaving little to no yard. Overnight Vehicle Dwelling Ban Renewed LA City Council reinstates Section 85.02 of municipal code.

By Sam Catanzaro It is again illegal to sleep in a car on the streets of Los Angeles.

Last month, LA City Council reinstated Section 85.02 of LA Municipal Code which prohibits individuals from using a vehicle for dwelling between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on residential streets and any time within 500 feet of a park or a licensed school, preschool or daycare facility.

On July 1, City Council let the ban expire before they went to recess, unintentionally giving people living in their cars a grace period.

At the City Council meeting last month a heated public hearing took place on the issue, with an overwhelming number of people speaking out against renewing the ban.

“We can sleep in ditches but we cannot sleep in our cars. There has to be a way that we can all work together. That there could be designated for the less fortunate to sleep in their cars while they get on their feet,” said Jose Garcia a veteran who was previously homeless for five years. “Not every homeless person is bad. And everybody deserves a second chance.”

Venice Justice Committee, worried that renewing the ban would harm individuals who have the least in society, “The City likes to think of itself as somehow doing this balancing act to protect the people that are housed by criminalizing and harming those who are not. That’s not a balance. You’re harming people that have the least amount among us,” Kennedy said.

“Don’t just work with private developers doing long term efforts and over-the-top bridge housing efforts, that are going to house ten percent or less of the people.”

Mary Anne Curtis of the End Homelessness LA Campaign took issue with the difference in the way the fact that the City lets e-scooters park on the street but not unhoused individuals.

“Thousands of electric scooters are given priority parking on streets that people unhoused are being swept off,” Curtis said. “980 plus have died this past year and your response is to ban them from street parking?”

Despite the overriding public support against renewing the ban, City Council voted unanimously to reinstate Section 85.02 of the code, making the overnight dwelling in vehicles illegal immediately.

After Council voted, members of the public began chanting “shame on you” repeatedly, forcing City Council President Pro Tem Nury Martinez to instruct the Los Angeles Police Department to remove the protestors.

Councilmember Mike Bonin, who rep-

resents Council District 11 which includes Brentwood, was not present for the vote. In an email to Brentwood News, however, Bonin said that he was unable to attend the Council meeting due to a medical issue but would have opposed the renewing of the ban, citing lack of progress with The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s (LAHSA) Safe Parking Program, “I would have voted against reinstatement of the ban on people living in vehicles. When the council revised 85.02 a few years ago, it was a temporary measure with a sunset provision, outlining where people could reside In their vehicles and where they couldn’t, while the city crafted a safe parking program. We have repeatedly extended the sunset while the city and LAHSA have lagged in creating safe parking for the thousands of people living in their cars,” Bonin said. “We need to be moving people out of homelessness – not into homelessness. If we tell people with no homes that they cannot live in their cars, they are going to wind up on the sidewalks in our neighborhoods, and get locked further into homelessness, becoming harder and more costly to help. It will set us back even further in combating homelessness.”

In his statement, Bonin called on the city to dramatically expand safe parking programs and offer people a secure and legal place to park with a pathway to services and housing.

“That means a dramatic expansion of safe parking at city-owned lots, and an urgent ap-

peal to faith communities, nonprofits and businesses to offer space in their lots,” Bonin said.

In addition to banning sleeping inside a vehicle, the ordinance makes illegal possessing items that are not associated with ordinary vehicle use, such as a sleeping bag, bedroll, blanket, sheet, pillow, kitchen utensils, cookware, and bodily fluids. In addition, the law bans obscuring the vehicle’s windows and preparing or cooking meals inside or on a vehicle.

Violations of the law are punishable as an infraction, with the first violation not to exceed a $25 fine, the second not to exceed $50 and the third $65. Violators may be eligible for referral to a prosecutorial-led diversion program such as the Homeless Engagement and Response Team (HEART).

The ban will expire and be deemed to have been repealed on January 1, 2020, unless extended by ordinance.

P-61 Mountain Lion Crosses Freeway Cougar crosses 405 in first-time event

By Keldine Hull For the first time throughout the course of a 17-year study of mountain lions in or around the Santa Monica Mountains, a GPS tracked lion has crossed the 405 freeway. The rare event was documented by the National Park Service (NPS) in the Sepulveda Pass area on July 19 between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. P-61, a four-year old mountain lion first captured and outfitted with a GPS collar in October 2017, was headed east according to NPS footage.

“Although P-61 successfully crossed the 405, his feat is a reminder of how challenging Southern California’s road network is for mountain lions and other wildlife, as well.

Others haven’t been so lucky,” said Jeff Sikich, biologist for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, in a National Park Service news release.

P-18, a cougar outfitted with a GPS collar, had a much different outcome than P-61 and was killed in 2011 while trying to cross the 405. In 2009, a lion not associated with the mountain lion study was also killed while attempting to cross the 405. Although un-

collared at the time, P-22 is the most wellknown mountain lion to successfully cross the freeway. P- 22 was born in the Santa Monica Mountains and currently resides in Griffith Park. Through DNA tests, researchers believe that P-22 crossed both the 405 and 101 freeways approximately 7 years ago.

Since P-61 has a GPS collar that records data points in the area, researches will be presented with a rare opportunity to learn more about landscape connectivity. According to Sikich, “It will be interesting to see if P-61 stays in the area, whether he decides to challenge the uncollared lion, or if he heads back to the other side of the freeway.”

Bird Rolls Out its New Device

Company touting durability

There is a shiny new bird in town.

Bird has rolled out Bird Two, the newest device that will be part of the company's global fleet of shared e-vehicles.

“Bird Two is the embodiment of Bird’s commitment to the safety of our riders and those around them, our partnership with cities, and our focus on building a sustainable long-term business that reduces the number of cars on the road,” said Travis VanderZanden, founder and CEO of Bird.

“With the industry’s longest lasting battery and self-reporting damage sensors, anti-tipping kickstand, anti-theft encryption, puncture-proof tires, absence of exposed screws, Bird Two is the next generation e-scooter specifically built to exceed the needs and demands of riders and cities alike while delivering a significant positive bottom-line impact.”

Last fall, Bird introduced what they touted as "the world’s first ruggedized e-scooter", Bird Zero. Less than a year later, the company is unveiling Bird Two, an e-scooter that they hope will provide advancements from a city, rider, and hardware experience.

According to Bird, Bird two has been in development since the company’s founding and has a variety of designs and features that set it apart from previous e-scooters and that address servicing and maintaining the vehicle.

is automotive-grade and has over 50 percent more capacity than Bird One’s battery.

In addition, Bird Two features self-reporting damage sensors. With these sensors, Bird mechanics can more easily address aspects of the vehicle that need repair and attention. Other new features touted by the company in a press release include seamless screws,anti-theft encryption and puncture-proof tires.

The roll-out of Bird Two comes as the company looks to raise $200-300 million in venture capital by the end of summer. As part of the pitch to investors, Bird is touting the durability of their new devices as a way the company hopes to cut down on operating costs.

As reported by The Information, Bird lost nearly $100 million in the first quarter of 2019 while revenue declined by over 62 percent from the previous quarter. In addition, in the spring the company said they were down to around $100 million in cash despite raising over $700 million over nearly two years. In response to this loss of revenue, the company laid off five percent of its employees and paused service in 44 of its North American markets.

Since Bird’s launch in 2017, the company has reported over ten million rides, claiming to have “prevented more than 12 million pounds of carbon emissions from being released into the air.” Lime has similarly tallied over ten million rides, reporting that 27 percent of those rides were to or from public transit hubs; in June alone, Lime boasted providing 15,000 free rides to help Europeans vote.

The study found that environmental impact is dependent on the typical scooter’s lifespan, which Johnson’s team estimated to be between 6 months and two years. The team found that 50 percent of a scooter’s carbon footprint is due to the manufacturing process, meaning scooters that last longer before replacement produce less per passenger-mile emissions.

A study conducted by Quartz found that the first generation of Bird scooters in Louisville, Kentucky had an average lifespan of less than a month.

In additional to suffering daily wear from regular use and charging, scooters are frequently vandalized. The viral Instagram account Bird Graveyard has over one hundred thousand followers and over 300 posts depicting people trashing Bird and Lime scooters by kicking them over, throwing them off of buildings, and even setting them on fire. According to Slate, the city of Oakland removed 60 electric scooters from Lake Merrit in October alone. On the Westside, scooters are frequently thrown into the water near the Venice Canals and the Venice Pier, as reported by Yo! Venice.

Since Bird’s launch, however, the company has improved its scooters’ durability and resistance to vandalism. Bird’s first proprietary scooter, Bird Zero, has been

on the streets since October 2018 and has a lifespan of eight to twelve months; the company expects its most recent Bird Two model to last two years. Lime, which launched in early 2018, has similarly improved scooter durability with proprietary designs; Lime’s newest Gen 3 scooter is expected to have a lifespan of one year.

In addition to the environmental impact due to scooter production, a large portion of scooter emissions are associated with the collection and charging process. Users of shared scooter apps can sign up to become chargers — chargers typically drive around urban areas picking up scooters to charge at home, earning anywhere between $3 to $20 per scooter. Once the scooters are charged, chargers drop the scooters off at designated locations. The NC State study showed that chargers drive 0.6-2.5 miles per scooter during the collection and distribution process.

According to the study, collection and distribution make up 43 percent of the scooters’ environmental impacts.

A Lime spokesperson said “sustainability is core to Lime’s mission…we’ve already taken steps to reduce our environmental impact, including streamlining our charging operations, powering our scooters with 100 percent renewable energy, offsetting the emissions from fleet vehicles, and establishing a robust repair and reuse program to extend the life cycle of our products.”

Bird has taken similar action. In 2018, the company partnered with sustainability consultant 3Degrees to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and carbon offsets to mitigate its emissions impact — RECs allow the company to charge its fleet with renewable energy, and offsets fund projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Both companies have also been testing features that allow chargers to reserve scooters before picking them up; reservation features aim to streamline the collection process and reduce the amount of time chargers drive in search of scooters.

Rail Line from the Valley to Westwood?

LA Metro’s Sepulveda Transit Corridor project

By Keldine Hull The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority recently held a series of public meetings in selected locations to address the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project, which aims at constructing a rail transit line that connects the Valley to LAX with a potential station in Culver City.

According to Metro, “The natural barrier created by the Santa Monica Mountains means that most people traveling between these areas are funneled primarily onto the I-405 Freeway, already ranked as one of the most traveled urban highways in the nation.” Metro added, “More than 400,000 people travel through this area every day to commute to work, school, and other destinations along the freeway and beyond.”

Metro is currently in the process of conducting its Feasibility Study to identify and evaluate a range of rail transit alternatives between the San Fernando Valley and LAX. The study, which began the end of 2017 and is expected to conclude this fall, is divided into two areas: a Valley- Westside segment and a Westside- LAX segment. Metro continued, “Its findings will be the basis for future environmental analysis and project

Monorails, while having a lower speed can operate on steeper grades than HRTs and LRTs, something LA Metro is taking into account given the terrain of the Sepulveda Pass.

All of these options can make it from the Valley to the Expo Line in 26 minutes or less, with the fastest being HRTs at 15 minutes. For comparison, without traffic, the same distance takes 22 minutes in a car and 110 minutes in traffic, according to LA Metro.

Through the public meetings, Metro looks to not only present transit concepts and cost projections but to receive public input as well.

Lining San Vicente Boulevard, coral trees are fast-growing and suffer from weak wood, making them susceptible to collapse unless pruned regularly but cver-pruning, however, causes the trees to “sunburn.” Furthermore, San Vicente’s coral trees have not been spared by the impacts of California’s recent, record-breaking drought. Oak Root Fungus is a common plant disease in California that thrives in moist conditions — the fungus has spread through the San Vicente Corridor through gopher damage.

On September 7, BCC will host a sub-committee meeting devoted to the topic of saving Brentwood’s Coral Trees.

This meeting will be held at Kaufman Branch Library starting at 9:30 a.m.

A meeting on dealing with the local homelessness situation will start that same morning at 11:30 a.m. (same location).

The next regular BCC regular meeting will be held Sept. 11. Representatives of Berggruen Institute will discuss current status of plans for a “think tank” up in the hills above Brentwood.

Jimmy Stewart’s $8 Million+ Brentwood Home Sells

By Keldine Hull For the first time in six decades, the former Brentwood home of Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart has sold for $8.26 million.

Stewart lived in the home during the 1940s with fellow actors and bachelors, Burgess Meredith and Johnny Swope, before moving to Beverly Hills in 1949 with his wife Gloria Hatrick Stewart.

Stewart’s former residence at 12731 Evanston Street was built in 1938. The single-story, 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom home sits on about half an acre and comes equipped with a 2- car garage in the front.

It also features two fireplaces, one in the living room and another in the dining room, as well as built in bookcases and original peg- and- groove oak floors.

Stewart’s illustrious career on-screen led to multiple classics still revered by fans today.

Known for roles in 1939’s “Mr. Smith Goes to Hollywood” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” in 1946, Stewart took home an Oscar for his leading role in 1940’s The Philadelphia Story.

Stewart collaborated with fellow icon and “Master of Suspense” Alfred Hitchcock on cult classics “Rope,” “Rear Window,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much” and “Rear Window.” Stewart passed away on July 2, 1997 at the age of 89.
