By Sam Catanzaro A Brentwood toy shop that has been in businesses for over 50 years is closing its doors permanently but not before a clearance sale.

Star Toys, located at 130 S Barrington Place in Brentwood, was founded in 1968.

Now 52 years later, owner Lenny Lieberman has announced the store will close due to his retirement.

“It is with great sadness after 52 years in business I have decided to retire. To all my loyal customers over the years I would like to thank you for your business,” Lieberman said.

“Being a part of the Brentwood community and bringing joy to children has been the highlight of each day.”

Brentwood Life: Beginning to Return to Normala Founding Publisher There is more and more local traffic these days, a sure sign things are opening up.

Traffic still hasn’t returned to precoronavirus levels – thank goodness – and the horn-honking remains less than it was before (hooray!).

Perhaps the surest sign of all that things are settling down is that our local stores are nicely stocked with paper towels and toilet paper. Panic buying has been replaced by kind of a big ho-hum.

The pandemic isn’t over, but we can’t shut down the economy forever. I think masks and social distancing is about as good as it gets for now. If it’s our time to go, it’s our time to go.

People keep wondering if things will really change as we go forward from here – or if we will fall back into our self-made traps from the past. Here are some personal hopes for the future.

I think government officials and businesses and other organizations should

actively promote more working from home.

Studies show productivity actually goes UP. Many of us work on computers. Why drive to some office to do there what we can readily do from home?

If overall traffic goes down as a result, that’s a win for gardeners, construction workers and others who NEED to work at a specific location. If they can all save half an hour a day in their commutes, that’s a good thing.

We’ve all seen the tents alongside the VA where homeless individuals are now camped. The tents look pretty good, really, and I spent some time over there recently, taking some pictures. The residents of these tents seemed reasonably happy.

I keep thinking that while officials working on homeless issues try to figure out what to do, erecting tent cities for homeless individuals on the outskirts of LA offers an interim, bridge, solution.

I think non-homeless individuals would appreciate getting homeless off the streets, and if we could set them up in wide open areas – think of the Grapevine as you pass through Tejon Ranch, or some place like that – that might be healthier for all,

especially in an era of COVID-19 mandated social distancing.

All the needed services – bathrooms, showers, food, healthcare, mental healthcare, job training, entertainment, community-building, etc. – could be set up in these locations.

When the housing is actually ready – and when the individuals are ready – we can reintegrate them into city life.

I know many homeless individuals don’t like to be “forced” into situations; let’s make these tent cities so appealing and so well run that homeless individuals everywhere will WANT to go there. I can’t imagine they would really prefer to remain on the streets “as is.”

For many years, I promoted the idea of a retirement village at the Charlie Munger property.

I always received positive

feedback on that proposal, but maybe that idea no longer flies in the time of coronavirus. Retirement homes, as we all know, got hit particularly hard.

But the Barry Building, where Duttons Bookstore was, is looking sadder and sadder all the time.

It’s time to knock it down, open up the land as a community garden – and then start working on a way to turn the property into a community center, complete with an indoor/outdoor theater and a public swimming pool.

And finally, for now, let’s hope our society can figure out how to properly integrate our society, once and for all, so scenes like this can remain in the history books.

State Housing Bills Increasing Fire Risks?

“These bills will exacerbate crowded conditions on our roads and put lives and property at risk,” says PPCC

By Sam Catanzaro With the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) advising that brush fire is now a yearround affair, the Pacific Palisades Community Council (PPCC) is expressing opposition to a set of state housing bills that they say will exacerbate crowded conditions on roads putting lives and property at risk.

Over the past few weeks, a series of brush fires have broken out in the Los Angeles-area, including one in Bel Air last week.

“Even during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, brush fires remain a threat to both lives and property in the City of LA. There are more than 147,000 parcels in the City’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ) requiring annual brush clearance inspections,” the LAFD says.

With the threat of fire in mind, the PPCC on Monday sent a letter to the State Senate Appropriations Committee expressing opposition to a set of bills that could lead to greater housing density. Pacific Palisades residents were recently under mandatory evacuation orders during the 2019 Getty Fire and Palisades Fire.

“During mandatory evacuations, swift access is needed for emergency vehicles as well as for the thousands of residents who are forced to flee their homes. Such access will be compromised by the increased density – more population – called for by the proposed bills,” says PPCC. The bills under scrutiny include SB 902, 1085, 1120 and 1385, which the PPCC says would erode local land use and zoning control and allow denser development in residential areas, either by streamlining California Environmental

“None of the bills contains an unconditional exemption for parcels located in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ).

As a result, this proposed legislation presents a clear danger to public safety in VHFHSZ neighborhoods,” reads the PPCC letter. “All of the Palisades is located in the VHFHSZ. We have

only two primary routes of ingress and egress and many of our hillside streets are narrow and winding. The increased density called for by these bills will exacerbate crowded conditions on our roads and put lives and property at risk.”

In their letter, PPCC says it will oppose these bills unless they are amended to provide for a clear, unconditional exemption for VHFHSZ areas.

Feds Offering $10k for Santa Monica Big 5 Firearm Burglary Info

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced a $10,000 reward for May 31 burglary

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information related to the arrest of those responsible for the burglary of a Santa Monica Big 5, a federal firearms licensee.

According to the ATF, around 8 p.m., May 31, a group of unidentified suspects burglarized the Big 5 Sporting Goods, at 3121 Wilshire Boulevard., in Santa Monica.

“The unidentified suspects used a crowbar and a sledgehammer to break the windows and utilized bolt cutters to cut the metal roll down gate. They opened the emergency exit door of the business to gain entry to the business.

Once inside, the suspects stole 29 firearms from the business. The suspects who used the sledgehammer and bolt cutters were riding in a white BMW four-door sedan,” the ATF said in a press release.

A project that has been in the works for several years: LA Metro’s Purple Line Extension. It’s a rail project that will speed up the time it takes to travel between downtown Los Angeles, the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills and Westwood.

However, similar to any project, the company has ran into some difficulties: tar sand conditions are driving costs up.

Construction for the $2.8 billion 3.9-mile WPLE1 section began in 2014, with tunneling beginning in mid-2918 and was expected to be completed by 2023. In mid-2018, Metro celebrated the beginning of tunneling.

According to LA Streets.blog, “Through January of this year, Construction Committee reporting showed the project status as “on target” to meet cost and schedule projections. Starting with the February Construction Committee report, the project cost began to be flagged as a possible problem.

In a May report, Metro’s construction program announced that WPLE1 is facing a potential cost overrun, with an anticipated adjustment to the project budget expected in fiscal year 2020-21.”

So far, the company has been able to make progress with parallel tunnels (three miles worth) below Wilshire Boulevard from Western Avenue to Fairfax Avenue.

Metro does have to complete another mile from Fairfax to La Cienega Boulevard that’s expected to be significantly challenging.

The project is still anticipated to be mostly complete in 2023, and open to the public in 2024. The $2.8 billion budget, still stands though it’s expected a committee will take a look and revisit the number.

Firefighters Fully Contain Bel Air Brush Fire 50-acre fire contained, no visible flames remain

By Sam Catanzaro Firefighters have fully contained a wildfire fire that broke out in the hills near Bel Air Wednesday morning.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the fire–dubbed the Sepulveda Fire–was first reported at 12:13 a.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard, east of the 405 Freeway near Getty Center Drive.

LAFD spokesperson Brian Humphrey said that two LAFD firefighters suffered non-lifethreatening injuries while battling the fire, and were treated at the scene and released. No civilians were injured.

Brentwood Coronavirus Cases Surpass 100 as County Nears 100K Mark Community spread increasing, say LA County health officials

By Sam Catanzaro Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Brentwood have surpassed 100 as countywide the number nears 100,000.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) confirmed 34 new deaths and 1,260 new cases of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). To date, Public Health has identified 89,490 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of LA County, and a total of 3,205 deaths. In Brentwood, there have now been 102 cases and two deaths.

“As community spread is increasing in our communities, adherence to The recent increase in daily cases and rates of positive test results indicates that there is more community spread of COVID-19 in LA County. It is as important as ever

Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 2,982 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 42% of deaths occurred among Latino/Latinx residents, 28% among White residents, 17% among Asian residents, 11% among African American/Black residents, less than 1% among Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander residents and 1% among residents identifying with other races.

There are 1,556 people who are currently hospitalized, 26% of these people are in the ICU and 18% are on ventilators.

Testing capacity continues to increase in LA County, with testing results available for over 990,000 individuals and 8% of people testing positive.

Den of Mountain Lion Kittens Discovered

P-54 gives birth to first litter

Acknowledging the civic unrest across the nation, Santa Monica Mountains rangers made an announcement that they hope can bring a small smile to faces: the recent discovery of a den of mountain lion kittens “We want to acknowledge that times are tough.

Not only are we still dealing with a deadly pandemic, but our nation is engaging in an intense and emotional dialogue about issues related to race and civil rights,” said Ranger Ana Beatriz Cholo with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

“With this in mind, we hope that our recent discovery of a den of mountain lion kittens can perhaps bring a small smile to your face today.”

P-54, a three-year old mountain lion living in the Santa Monica Mountains, recently gave birth to a litter of kittens – males P-82 and P-83, and female P-84, according to National Park Service biologists.

Researchers believe this is her first litter.

It’s always good news to discover a new litter of kittens, but biologists are hopeful for another reason: the presumed father, male mountain lion P-63, may have just brought something that is much needed into the Santa Monica Mountains – genetic diversity.

More than four months ago, P-63, the only adult male radio-collared mountain lion living in the Santa Monica Mountains, was repeatedly “located” with P-54 over two days, which is generally an indication of a mating interaction. Approximately 90 days later, researchers noticed a series of localized GPS locations indicating that either P-54 was feeding at a kill site or that she had given birth.

“The last litter of kittens that we marked at a den was from P-19, during the summer of 2018,” said Jeff Sikich, a biologist who has been studying mountain lions for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area since 2002. “That litter was likely the product of inbreeding, which is just one of the serious problems facing the isolated mountain lion population in the Santa Monica Mountains south of the 101 Freeway. We’re hoping this circumstance is totally different, but only genetic testing will tell us for sure.”

After Park Service biologists discovered P-54’s litter, they weighed and examined the trio and determined that all appeared healthy. Each kitten was given an ear tag to help identify them in the future, samples were taken for genetic testing, and all were returned to the den. P-54’s kittens were estimated to be 19 days old at the time of tagging.

P-54 has been tracked by biologists in the Santa

Monica Mountains practically her entire life. She was born in January 2017 and the following month, NPS researchers marked her with a tracking device as a kitten while her mother, P-23, was away from the den.

In January 2018, P-54’s mother, P-23, was found dead near the side of Malibu Canyon Road, after being struck by a vehicle. P-54 was one year old at the time of her mother’s death, which is during the early end of when kittens typically leave their mother. Fortunately, she survived.

The new litter’s likely father, P-63, was initially captured at approximately 15 months of age with his mother P-62 in February 2018 and outfitted with a GPS collar. Both cats were captured north of the 101 Freeway in the Simi Hills. Since then P-63 has crossed that freeway a total of three times and has stayed in the Santa Monica Mountains since December of 2018.

presents a major barrier for wildlife, which is particularly a concern for the mountain lion population largely isolated in the Santa Monica Mountains. Planning and fundraising for a wildlife crossing over the 101 Freeway in the Liberty Canyon area of Agoura Hills is in progress. The bridge would provide a connection between the small population of lions in the Santa Monica Mountains and the large and genetically diverse populations to the north.

This is the 17th litter of mountain lion kittens marked at a den site over the course of our long-term study.

Three additional litters of older kittens (all at least six months old) were discovered and marked when they had already left their den site.

No Visitors in Nursing Homes: A Disastrous Policy TOM ELIAS Palisades News Columnist

Nothing has contributed more to substandard treatment of older adults in nursing homes than a futile, failed rule imposed by state and federal governments at the advent of the COVID-19 crisis: Virtually no visits for anyone in any nursing home or skilled nursing facility.

The ban was intended to keep the coronavirus out of nursing homes, but patients there nevertheless account for more than one-fourth of the 110,000-plus COVID-19 deaths nationally and almost half of California’s fatalities. It’s clear the nearly four-month ouster of visiting relatives and friends has been worse than useless.

The rule has certainly not kept the virus away. But it produced scores of heart-wrenching newspaper stories and television news segments featuring some of the thousands of patients who died alone

because nursing homes kept their loved ones away, be they friends or close relatives like sons and daughters, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Some said permanent goodbyes to beloved elders through closed windows or via cellphones, making for dramatic videos.

The harm from this goes far beyond emotional damage. It has also led to newly low standards of care in many facilities, charge some patients, their relatives and doctors.

One accomplished, mentally alert 76-year-old man who was forced to sell his house and move permanently into a nursing home when he became too disabled to transfer from bed to wheelchair by himself confided this: during one stretch in May he was kept in bed for periods of both five consecutive days and, later, four straight days. Telephone calls to a nurses’ station near his room revealed he is routinely put to bed at 4 p.m. daily, like it or not. In an email, he said this was new, done “for the convenience of the staff.”

Such treatment has become routine in an unknown, but large, number of nursing homes chiefly because of the virtual ban on visitation, mandated by overlapping federal and state rules. This is true despite assertions from the California Department of Public Health (DPH) that it has conducted numerous inspections and assessed many

penalties during the pandemic.

“Nursing home management already disliked visitors before COVID-19,” said Michael Dark, staff attorney for California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.

“Visitors notice bedsores on people not being turned in their beds, they see when residents are not hydrated or not clean, they notice when sheets are not changed, things that are supposed to be routine.”

Management knows visitors can complain to state authorities. But because of the visitor ban, outsiders now don’t see these things or complain.

All this is in the name of shutting coronavirus out of the homes, something that clearly does not work. That is chiefly because nursing home staff, including many certified nursing assistants, is low paid, often getting minimum wages and thus forced to work more than one job to survive. If one nursing home is sanitary, but staffers also work in others that are not, they can carry the viral infestation from home to home. And there’s no requirement for regular testing.

One doctor who treats nursing home patients when they arrive in her hospital with COVID-19 wrote in the New York Times, “The elderly are more isolated and defenseless than ever.”

So it is long past time the DPH changes a key word repeated often in its May 2

guidelines that help exclude almost all visitors from California nursing homes.

Those rules repeatedly “recommend” homes admit visitors under specific, spelled-out conditions, including a recommendation that children in skilled nursing facilities each be allowed visits from one support person.

The bottom line here is that right now Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration tolerates a situation that leads to disease and death for thousands of helpless elders and others in nursing homes.
