Michael Roy started his career as a muralist,
thriving in the street art scene of Seoul, South Korea, where his moniker "Birdcap" was born. Since then, his art has spanned continents with callbacks to the challenges and love of his hometown in Mississippi. During the festival, Birdcap will create one of his murals on campus for everyone to enjoy.
Sunday, April 13 - 1:30 p.m.
Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW director Jade Dellinger will give a lecture on “Rauschenberg & The Moon Museum: Apollo XII’s Secret Art Mission” that will include an "exhibition-inhis-pocket" of an original "Moon Museum" (1969) ceramic tile/multiple. Discussing Rauschenberg’s surreptitious and ultimately successful effort to send a “museum” (with artworks by the artist and renowned friends including Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, John Chamberlain, et al.) to the lunar surface, this one-day only event and "pop up" shows and tells the still little-known but remarkable story of the rst ever "Space Art" object and the improbable tale of a group of American artists hitching a ride on the Apollo XII's LEM 6 to get their art to the Moon.
Alyne Harris was born on March 25, 1942, in Gainesville, Florida. She grew up on a farm with seven siblings. As a child, Harris and her sisters played at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, and she remembers rst learning to draw in the dirt there. When she had free time in school, she drew and painted instead of playing. She was inspired by nature and by visions she saw of angels. Harris’s career as an artist started to gain traction in the southern art community in the 1990s. She draws inspiration from African American traditions, her religion, and nature.
Harris’s art is in many private collections and is often displayed at exhibits in museums and local art festivals. In 2020, The Historic Thomas Center bought 400 of her pieces from private collector. Her artwork is housed in several collections, including House of Blues, Folk Art Museum of Central Texas, Folk Art Museum of New York City, the Rockford Art Museum, the Asheville Art Museum, Souls Grown Deep, and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Alyne’s artwork can be purchased through multiple online galleries, including Jeanine Taylor Folk Art and Main Street Gallery.
