Join us for an exciting 8-day STEM experience working with robotics held at Santa Fe College. The GRAATE Summer Institute is part of a research project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), designed to spark student interest in STEM Technician careers. SF Teaching Zoo

The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, a unique 10-acre zoo in Gainesville, Florida, is the only zoo on a college campus accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in the nation. Not only is the zoo open to our community and showcases an array of native and exotic animals, but it is also a learning lab for students in the Zoo Animal Technology program.

Protecting Wildlife

In this course, explore the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoos conservation efforts both locally and globally. Learn about the zoos role in protecting endangered species, preserving habitats, and supporting sustainable practices. Engage with animal ambassadors and meet the dedicated zookeepers who care for them. Discover how the zoo community works together to protect wildlife and wild places, combining education, research and hands-on conservation.

What was life like in Florida in 1776? How did its culture and politics differ from the original 13 colonies? As a colony loyal to the British Crown, Florida played a unique role in opposing the rebellious colonies to the north during the American Revolution. Yet some Floridians embraced revolutionary ideas that later shaped our path to statehood in 1845. Animal Behavior

Learn how zookeepers utilize animal behavior insights to care for and enrich the lives of zoo animals. Observe training sessions facilitated by 200 keepers in the Zoo Animal Technology Program, as well as conduct your own animal behavior observation. Foundations of Horsemanship

Thinking about owning a horse or simply want to deepen your understanding of these incredible animals? These topics include:

- Basic horse care and management

- Safe handling and groundwork

Lars Andersen is a full-time river guide for Adventure Outpost in High Springs, Florida. Each week, he leads 2-3 kayak and canoe tours on over 50 Florida waterways.

Wild Lore of the Ocklawaha

On this kayak/canoe trip we’ll explore the fascinating and often quirky lore of some plants and animals growing along this wild, scenic river. Today, the river is a world of egrets, herons, gators and other wildlings, but an Indian mound and a steamboat landing that we’ll visit along our rout, attest to a colorful human history. Astronomy

James Albury

In 2009, Albury became the director of the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium at Santa Fe College. He has produced numerous planetarium shows in the 13 years that he has been the planetarium’s director.

Albury was also a co-host with Dean Regas of the internationally syndicated PBS show “Star Gazers” (the world’s only weekly television program on naked-eye astronomy). Albury and Regas hosted the show together from October 2011 to November 2019. In February 2020, Albury launched his own astronomy series on YouTube titled “The Sky Above Us.” Each episode gives viewers a sneak-peak at the celestial events, planets and constellations that are visible in the sky during the coming weeks. Since 2006, the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium has been dedicated to enriching the learning environment of Santa Fe College students and our community. Learning The Constellations

Learn how to navigate using the stars! This two-session course (facilitated by James C. Albury - co-host of the nationally syndicated PBS program ‘Star Gazers’) teaches the fundamentals of finding your way around using the stars. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to tell what season it is, which direction you’re traveling, and how far north or south you are on the Earth, just by the constellations you can see above you. Both two-hour sessions will be held at the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium at Santa Fe College’s NW Campus using their Chronos optical/mechanical projector by Goto.

Erin Alvarez is a distinguished landscape educator who focuses on student-centered experiential learning. Known for her hands-on “living lab” teaching approach, she emphasizes practical skills and real-world experience in the landscape and nursery industry. She holds a B.A. in English (1999), a B.S. in Public Gardens Management (2004) and an M.S. in Environmental Horticulture (2006), all from the University of Florida. Her expertise lies in the intersection of landscape design, maintenance, and plant science, particularly in creating sustainable and water-efficient landscapes suited to the Florida climate. Her teaching philosophy is encapsulated in the mantra “dirt don’t hurt,” encouraging students to engage directly with the material.
