CAREER PATHWAYS

You can earn free college credits while taking high school classes.
Finding the right career pathway can be difficult. Santa Fe College’s Career Pathways program allows students the opportunity to explore careers in emerging fields that will prepare them for the future.
The Career Pathways program at SF coordinates with local school districts to offer students taking Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school –saving time and money. Students enrolled in these courses are eligible to receive college credit through either industry certification or by passing a Career Pathways college level assessment.
Upon successful completion of CTE courses, industry certification, or Career Pathways assessment, students are awarded college credit through SF. This credit will become a part of the Career Pathways student’s permanent college record and may be transferable to other colleges and universities.
Benefits of SF’s Career Pathways program:
Earn high school and college credit at the same time
Qualify for Bright Futures scholarships
Pay no tuition or lab fees
Finish college faster
Career Pathways credit allows students to get a head start in both careers and college, and may even lead to finishing college faster.
Career Certificate (C.C) and College Credit Certificate (C.C.C.) programs are often paired with paid apprenticeships and many can be completed in six months. Credits earned with a C.C.C. can be applied towards SF’s A.S. and bachelor’s degrees.
The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program is designed to prepare you for a career, but in some cases it may transfer to a bachelor’s program. A.S. programs provide a good balance of general education coursework and hands-on training with the end goal to enter the workforce. The A.S. degree typically takes two years to complete and leads to a bachelor’s degree.
A bachelor’s degree is the highest degree you can achieve in undergraduate education. Santa Fe College offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degrees in several program areas. A bachelor’s degree at SF is often the next step for students after they obtain an A.A. or an A.S. degree. It allows students to continue to build skills and advance in a career field. A bachelor’s degree typically requires two additional years after completing an A.A. or A.S. degree.
Career Pathways programs prepare high school students for high-demand, high-skill and high-wage careers through innovative programs offered in career academies, or career-themed classes in their high school. These Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses blend practical hands-on learning environments, offering a more enriching learning environment and creating a pathway to college and a career.
Santa Fe College provides high school students in participating CTE programs with the opportunity to earn college credit at their school and start an official Santa Fe College transcript through Career Pathways. Depending on the career path, students may earn up to 12 college credits for high school work, a savings of up to $2,500*.
High school students in the Career Pathways program can earn college credit in these career and technical programs:
• Biotechnology
• Business
• Construction and Technical
• Digital Media and Graphic Design
• Early Childhood Education
• Health
• Information Technology
• Public Safety
For some college courses, students can earn college credit through the successful completion of an industry certification. For others, credit is earned through a college-level final exam. To qualify to take the exam, students must have a minimum of a B average in their high school course (in some high school programs a C average), teacher recommendation and parental permission.
If students earn the appropriate industry certification or pass a Career Pathways college-level exam with an A, B or Pass, they will receive college credit on an SF transcript while still in high school and that credit becomes a part of their permanent college record.
