Looking good while you work out - not just weeks after - is a new luxury, courtesy of the edgy activewear and must-have accessories (including the coolest headphones ever!) in this month’s “Activate.” And then we have the Santa Barbara Public Market—the perfect place for lunch with endless options! From fresh pressed juices (and my absolute favorite vanilla coconut water) from JuiceWell, to oysters from Santa Monica Seafood, there’s something for every palate. We give you

an inside look at a few of our favorite healthy vendors in “Santa Barbara Public Market.” With summer right around the corner we found you dresses that work wonderfully for any occasion—day or night. With a beautiful Santa Barbara estate as the backdrop, we photographed our favorite styles from several local boutiques for “A Breath of Fresh Air.” Working out is always better with a workout buddy. Even better is a workout buddy who never bails and is always motivating. “Fit for Summer” features personal trainer Jessie Hernandez and her fun-loving attitude sure to inspire you, along with the whole SBL&S team, to amp up your fitness routine!

28 | SANTA BARBARA LIFE & STYLE MAGAZINE

JUICEWELL Tell us about your products, what separates them and makes them unique?

What is your favorite thing that JuiceWell carries?

JuiceWell makes fresh pressed remedies -- we believe food is your medicine and we work with herbalists and other food therapy experts to create juices that will positively support your health. All JuiceWell juices are made locally from local, organic produce. We have more than 30 different juices, smoothies, nut milks and infused coconut waters -- a wonderfully wide selection of delicious and healthy drinks.

Favorite thing we carry is our 3-Day cleanse. It is a unique and powerful cleanse with a huge variety of juices, smoothies, nut milks and coconut waters. You never repeat a drink, and you feel fully nourished thoughout the process.

We also make vegan salads (kale, avocado, quinoa, and zucchini pesto) as well as vegan chocolate pudding (avocado based!), and snacks (macaroons, macs bites, energy bites, and health nuts). What attracted JuiceWell to the Public Market? Part of our mission is to connect people with the source of their food, and we were attracted to how the Public Market supports that connection. We love the community feeling of the market families, friends, neighbors -- it is like an Italian piazza.

We have a local program called Healthscription, which is a way for people to subscribe to their own health by committing to a series of juices, and in return, getting a deep discount. It is a great program for helping people get more fruits and veggies into their weekly diet so they stay healthy and vibrant! Any evolving new ideas for the future? We have shots coming, as well as some incredibly delicious new vegan food choices. We sample juices every day, so anyone can try any juice!

FORAGERS PANTRY Tell us about your products, what separates them and makes them unique?

What is your favorite thing that Foragers Pantry carries?

Foragers Pantry offers local and organic produce, (we are currently 98% organic, and the remaining 2% is local unsprayed) chemical and preservative free groceries, cruelty free body care, and eco-household products. We are sourcing for a small foot print, reaching to local growers and distributors. We are promoting a local and healthy lifestyle for the community to rely upon.

I am currently hooked on the local peaches and nectarines from Galpin Farms, and Lompoc based Dare 2 Dream Farms’ fresh pasture eggs.

What attracted Foragers Pantry to the Public Market? The creation of the Market is in response to the growing demand in the community for a local natural food store. Foragers Pantry ties the entire market together, we complete the circle you make in the market, and it makes for a beautiful shopping experience. What can be better than buying your food straight from the people that made it?

30 | SANTA BARBARA LIFE & STYLE MAGAZINE

Any evolving new ideas for the future? We are bringing in approximately 150 new items every week, so please check in to see what’s new! We are also working on a fresh soup program to offer hot and cold soups ready to go throughout the day. Also, look forward to ad programs and follow us on our web page for the latest updates at foragerspantrysb.com Our produce is fresh and local, our prices are fair. Come see what’s happening in the Santa Barbara Public Market!

SANTA MONICA SEAFOOD Tell us about your products, what separates them and makes them unique? All the oysters we’re currently showcasing in our Oyster Bar are from the West Coast. We have 6 different types of oysters sourced from Carlsbad all the way up to the pristine waters of British Columbia. Raw oysters are a super healthy addition to your diet! Oysters are high in protein and a good source of natural carbohydrates and Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Another thing we love about oysters is that they are interactive -- they are similar to wine in that way, with different scents and flavors that can stimulate discussion and sharing. Can you share some of your ongoing sustainable practices? We’ve continued to ramp up our local purchasing efforts, buying direct from hard-working California fishermen up and down the coast. All of the oysters we are carrying are rated Green (Best Choice) for sustainability by Seafood Watch. Also, farm raising oysters brings little to no risk of pollution and escapees, and habitat impacts are minimal. Oysters are filter feeders, so the surrounding coastal waters can actually benefit from oyster farming! What attracted Santa Monica Seafood to the idea of the public market? How did the Oyster Bar idea come about? We were actually the last addition to the Public Market! We were sought out by the developer because of our industry-leading approach to responsible sourcing and our commitment to quality.

What is your favorite thing on the menu? I battle between a few things on the menu: Ahi Tuna Tartare, Tuna Melt, and Fish & Chips. Fish & Chips are one of my favorite menu items in general; I like to call them my guilty pleasure. But I have to say that my favorite thing on the menu is the Tuna Melt. We use fresh grilled Albacore tuna (none of that canned stuff), then mix in some mayo, red onion, and bell pepper. We then put some Fontina cheese and tomatoes all sandwiched between to pieces of fresh baked bread. We serve that with a mixed green salad with white balsamic vinaigrette. Any evolving new ideas for the future? I won’t reveal too much because I want to build the anticipation, but Santa Monica Seafood is loving what they are seeing with this new concept. We are working hard on making this venture become a destination point, so before we go any further, we want to make this store the best it can be for the community of Santa Barbara. We’re celebrating our 75 year anniversary! It’s amazing to work as part of a company that’s been family-owned since 1939. That’s a lot of experience in bringing the freshest, most responsibly sourced, and highest quality seafood to Southern California (and beyond).

Fit for Summer Personal trainers fill many essential roles in our lives, as motivators, sergeants, cheersquads, therapists, jogging partners, breakfast buddies, and besties - not to mention they keep us physically and mentally at our best! When you find someone that understands your lifestyle and can deliver the training you’re looking for, prepare yourself for a life upgrade. Don’t have a personal trainer? Get one. Really, it will be the best thing you do all summer. We like Jessie because she gets us, including our cravings for booty bustin’ beach regimens and colorful workout gear. After a bright, early morning photo shoot with B-Fly Activewear, we sat down with personal trainer Jessie Hernandez for a fun little Q&A.

What made you want to be a personal trainer? When I was in school at UCSB I worked as an intern in the Strength and Conditioning Program for Rec Sports. I loved learning how to lift and how to teach athletes to lift. I knew that I wanted to continue working with athletes, but I also thought it would be really cool to be able to teach non-athletes all the fun stuff that athletes do. So I am certified to do both! What do you feel is the biggest misconception about working out? The misconception that I hear most often is that if women lift weights they will get bulky. The good news is that we don’t have enough testosterone in our bodies to get bulky the way that men do. I lift all the time, that’s how you get strong! How are you so perfectly tan? Along with being a quarter Spanish, I spend the majority of my free time at the beach in a swimsuit playing beach volleyball and running around like a kid. Favorite stretch? Half-pigeon. Opening your hips up can make your whole body feel so good!

What’s in your purse? Oh boy. Wallet, a newspaper crossword puzzle, an apple, bag of almonds, bag of carrots, water bottle, deodorant, sunscreen, flyers for an upcoming Lolë event, a pen, 4 bobby pins, my to-do list from a week ago, headphones, my training notebook, swimsuit, and a toothbrush. (It’s a really big purse). What do you think is the best part of the job? I love that I get to see people during the best part of their day. Before work, after work, lunchtime…even if they come to me in a bad mood, they usually leave feeling better. What’s the best motivation to workout? My biggest motivation is knowing how good I feel when I workout. I have a lot of energy so when I don’t exercise, I get so antsy that I can’t even stand myself. Sometimes it takes a considerable amount of effort to get started, but I always feel better when I’m done. Do you have a favorite place to exercise in SB? I really enjoy running along the bike path down by the ocean. You get to sweat with a really beautiful view.

JUNE 2014 | 57

Where do you typically train your clients? I train people at Platinum Fitness in Summerland, at East Beach with Sweat Outdoors, and at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club.

Guilty pleasure? Watching Sex in the City. Any favorite pieces that you wore on the shoot? Everything was great, but the pink pants were so sassy, I have to choose them.

Do you have a favorite life motto? When I was in high school, my brother told me to take “all things in moderation.” That has always stuck with me. You can’t live without…. Two things: One, the beach. I thought that after college I might have had my fill of the beach and be able to live somewhere else. I was wrong. I think I am hooked forever. Two, soccer. I have played since I was a kid and I still can’t get enough.

Top 3 songs on your workout playlist: • Lights by Ellie Goulding (The Sonixx Dubstep Remix) • Titanium by David Guetta • Tsunami by Dvbbs & Borgeous

/ Jessie,s

workout playlist!

What’s your go to healthy snack? Baby carrots. I can eat a whole bag in one sitting. Any local activities you’re loving? My favorite activity is playing volleyball at East Beach. Anytime I am not working, I am most likely there.
