For the past few years, wood slat wall paneling seems to be everywhere in the design world, and for good reason. Slat wall paneling can add an impressive visual element to a room at a relatively low cost. Whether used as an accent wall, a wall-mounted headboard, or to wrap the base of a table or kitchen island, it seems the applications for slat wall paneling are endless. So, what exactly is a slat wall panel? Simply, it is constructed from a series of wood strips of uniform width, which are mounted vertically onto a panel. Most are made of wood veneer from various wood types, including American oak, white oak, and walnut. Vertical wall paneling pairs well with other popular design styles, including the mid-century modern, modern minimalist, Japandi, organic modern, and Scandi/boho
Wood paneling offers numerous benefits, including insulation, soundproofing, and durability, making it a versatile and attractive choice for a variety of projects. There’s been an explosion of products available in recent years, and with pricing ranges from budget-friendly to luxury, there’s likely something available for every project. But will vertical slat wall paneling withstand the test of time? If you’re thinking about adding this design element to your home (or wonder how well your recent project will age), consider these factors:
QUALITY OF MATERIALS: When it comes to wood slat walls, the materials you choose will impact how well it holds up over time. High-quality millwork is a timeless option for its durability, though you’ll spend more for a genuine wood product. Real wood ages beautifully, with its color and texture evolving in a way that only adds to its character. For a more budget-conscious option, consider veneer wood slat panels, which is likely what you’ve seen if you search online for vertical slat walls. Veneer wood panels are still made using real wood in the veneer (front) that you see. This process allows you to achieve that timeless,
authentic look at a price more affordable than custom millwork.
On the other hand, faux materials such as contact paper, melamine, or laminate might seem like a budget-friendly shortcut, but they often lack the depth and richness of real wood. These options can look cheap over time as they may peel, likely leaving you finding ways to repair the issue.
STYLE OF THE HOME: Many of the wood slat wall panels available today look modern and sleek, so generally I recommend using this design element in homes or spaces that lean more contemporary. Wood panels can be a showstopper in mid-century modern homes or spaces inspired by Scandinavian design; however, I’ve seen some beautiful scalloped and ribbed mill work, which would pair well in Craftsman or other older style homes.
To ensure your design choices remain timeless, consider how the wood slat walls complement the era and style of your space. When the design elements harmonize, their
appeal will endure longer.
THOUGHTFUL PLACEMENT: As with any design feature, less is often more. A well-placed wood slat wall can serve as a stunning focal point, elevating the overall ambiance of a room. But overuse can diminish the impact, overwhelming the design and losing the sense of balance that makes spaces inviting. Thoughtful placement of the panels into your space will help ensure your paneled walls won’t be going out of trend any time soon.
I’d love to see your slat wall panel project! @saltwood .interiors

“I had a great experience selling my parent’s Carpinteria home with the Richardson’s. The process was very smooth and professional. I was very pleased with the advice I received from both Kyle and Mike on pricing and what work should be done before the house was sold. I do not live in the area so good communication was very important. They were very responsive and always available by phone, text, and e-mail. It was a trust sale, and the house needed some updating before it could be sold. Their contractors promptly did great work at a reasonable price. The staging company, photographer and videographer did a good job at capturing the strengths of the house. They did a fantastic job marketing the house and it was quickly sold for more than the asking price. The closing went very smoothly. I highly recommend Kyle and Mike and would use them again.”

Buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction, it’s a major life decision tied closely to your goals, your family, and your financial future. That’s why Fair Housing Month is so important. Not just for our profession, but for our community.
Fair Housing means that everyone deserves a fair chance at the American dream of homeownership, free from discrimination. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), national origin, religion, disability, or familial status. In California, state law goes even further to protect additional classes. These laws are essential in helping us build stronger, more inclusive communities.
As REALTORS®, we take these responsibilities seriously. Every member of the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® abides by the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, which holds us to the highest standard of professionalism and fairness. That means
treating every client equally, regardless of background, and working every day to ensure housing opportunities are open to all.
If you're buying a home, you have the right to expect equitable treatment from everyone involved in the process, your agent, the seller’s agent, lenders, appraisers, and more. If you’re selling, you cannot discriminate against potential buyers based on protected characteristics and your agent cannot carry out any such instructions.
We know discrimination, whether subtle or overt, hurts everyone. It closes the door to homeownership for some, perpetuates inequality, and weakens our entire housing market. That’s why REALTORS® are committed to leading by example, upholding fair housing laws, and providing equal professional service to every client, every time.
Whether you're a buyer, seller, or someone simply exploring homeownership for the first time, it’s important to understand your rights and responsibilities. To learn more, visit facts.realtor or sbaor.org.
Let’s work together to ensure fairness and equality are the foundation of every home journey.

On April 5, more than 400 supporters of Planned Parenthood California Central Coast (PPCCC) gathered at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort for its annual event, netting about $500,000 for the reproductive health services provided at its six centers in the tri-county area, including one in the City of Santa Barbara. This year’s fundraiser was especially important because of the recent loss of nearly $400,000 in Title X federal grant funding.
The evening began with cocktails in the foyer, with guests clad in florals for the Garden Gala theme and many still energized from the “Hands Off” protests earlier in the day. Over dinner in the ballroom, Executive Director Jenna Tosh shared that “in this fraught moment for our country, we are doing everything we can to hold our health center doors open as wide as ever.”
PPCCC continues to provide high-quality care, without judgment, and serves anyone in need.
After paying tribute to former president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Cecile Richards, who recently passed away, Tosh rallied the crowd by quoting Richards: “It’s not hard to imagine future generations one day asking, ‘When there was so much at stake for our country, what did you do?’ The only acceptable answer is, ‘Everything we could.’ ” These are our marching orders, Tosh proclaimed, to do something about injustice.
Tosh lamented the rollback of rights, with the overturning of Roe v. Wade and enactment of abortion bans in 24 states; attacks on trans and non-binary people, immigrants, the rule of law, reproductive rights, and public health; the end of foreign aid for reproductive care; and the layoffs of federal workers.
On March 31, PPCCC, along with eight other affiliates, was defunded from the Title X Federal Grant program, under which PPCCC has received nearly $400,000 per year to provide care for low-income patients. The reason, Tosh explained with controlled exasperation, was PPCCC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and its service of undocumented patients.
Grave threats lie ahead, Tosh related, including a national abortion ban and the defunding of Medicaid, but PPCCC will keep its doors open, and is even expanding.
It recently opened a new, state-of-the-art center in Santa Maria, which triples its capacity at that location.
PPCCC is building an integrated behavioral health model to address the needs of patients who have experienced sexual assault, pregnancy loss, or other trauma. It is building a postpartum home visitation program to address maternal and infant health. And to raise critical funds, it has launched a special campaign: the Unstoppable Campaign.
VP of Advocacy & Engagement (and Goleta City Councilmember) Luz Reyes-Martín paid tribute to event honoree CAUSE Central Coast United for a Sustainable Economy a nonprofit focused on social, economic, and environmental justice for working class and immigrant communities in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
The political entities of CAUSE and PPCCC (CAUSE Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund) partnered on Proposition 1, which codified the right to abortion and contraception in the CA Constitution and Proposition 35, which ensures funding for safety net healthcare providers. Another collaboration has been with pregnant farmworkers, with CAUSE working to inform them of their right to disability benefits.
Reyes-Martín remarked that the attacks against immigrants and against Planned Parenthood come from the same playbook that seeks to “divide us, devalue us, and deny us our basic rights.” She assured guests that along with partners like CAUSE, PPCCC is not backing down and encouraged guests to include CAUSE among the organizations they support. CAUSE was not present to accept the award because of ongoing contract negotiations between clinical staff represented by SEIU-UHW and PPCCC management.
In the 2023-24 fiscal year, PPCCC served more than 28,000 patients, including nearly 5,600 at its Santa Barbara Center. It performed more than 4,000 abortions, dispensed more than 60,000 units of birth control, and provided more than 110,000 STI tests and more than 3,000 cancer screenings. The nonprofit had $34 million in revenue, with the biggest chunk from patient services (largely Medi-Cal and other state programs) and nearly one-quarter coming from fundraising.

My favorite city in the world is a favorite of many others as well, holding the number-one spot on the global Top 100 City Destinations Index. Paris, in 2024, hosted the summer Olympics, reopened the fire-damaged Notre Dame Cathedral, and was selected as the most attractive city in the world. However, 2024 was not unique, since Paris has topped the Index for the previous four years as well as welcoming more than 70 million visitors annually.
Starting in 2021, Paris has been following a long-term plan to become a greener, cleaner, and more walkable city. It has an agenda for remodeling the entire city into a place where residents can more easily access local jobs, retail, health, and cultural services within a short distance of their homes. Central to this transformation is challenging the dominance of private cars. In 2016, the right bank of the Seine ceased being a freeway that handled 40,000 vehi-
cles per day, leading to a big drop in congestion, pollution, and noise.
The city invests heavily in mixed-use neighborhoods and quality of life initiatives. Early on, it started the first bike share program, Vélib’, followed by an ever-growing network of urban bike routes (621 miles in 2024). Since the turn of the century, car trips in Paris have dropped by more than 50 percent while public transit ridership has grown by more than 40 percent.
Last month, March 2025, Parisians voted 66 percent in favor of pedestrianizing an additional 500 streets, an overwhelming mandate to continue the broader campaign of reducing car use. Car parking on city streets has shrunk by more than 50 percent in the past two decades; this recent vote will remove an additional 10,000 street parking spaces.
A component of this recent vote is that city residents will be consulted on which additional streets become car-free. These new areas, referred to as “green lungs,” allow people to gather free from traffic and noise. This expansion will bring the total to 700 pedestrian streets, more than 10 percent of all city streets. In 2021, City Hall created an $84 million “participatory budget” that residents can allocate for
neighborhood projects. One initiative is to transform educational establishments into community hubs, opening schools after hours and on weekends to neighborhood residents while turning “school streets” into safe non-motorized routes.
Despite the progress, Paris trails other European capitals in green infrastructure.
According to the European Environmental Agency, green spaces (public parks, private gardens, wetlands, and tree-lined streets) make up only 26 percent of Paris’s urban area, well below the European average of
41 percent.
Maybe Santa Barbara can learn from Paris by adopting policies to reduce reliance on private cars while prioritizing walking, cycling, and neighborhood engagement.
