Microstress: The Itch That’s Hard to Scratch

When I first came across the word “microstress,” I was intrigued. We all know what stress is and have heard it described in a million different ways, but microstress? I needed to learn more. Here’s a quick breakdown for you with a few takeaways in the hopes that it raises your awareness of something that affects us all.

But first, a definition. Karen Dillon, author of The Microstress Effect, states that microstresses are tiny moments of stress that are caused by routine interactions with other people that are so routine you barely notice them. A good metaphor is a teacup to which you keep adding a little more liquid. You add a little more, a little more, and it’s holding on at the top until you add one extra drop, and it spills over. That’s the effect of microstress.

I’m sure you are already picturing where your microstresses are coming from. Think death by a thousand cuts. I picture it as stress by a thousand small, irritating things that build and could potentially blow up. Seems right on in our world today with all that we are holding, balancing, and juggling.

While “normal” stress as we know it is visual and obvious, microstress is much less obvious. These come at us so quickly that we hardly notice. Examples of microstress include that annoying co-worker heading toward your office, reporting to a moody boss and you never know what you’ll get, or dishes left in the sink and not put into the dishwasher. All seem small, but these can

accrue and create ripple effects on you and your relationships.

The Impact of Microstress:

• Physical Health: Frequent exposure to microstress can lead to increased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which can contribute to various health issues, including heart problems, digestive disorders, and weakened immune function.

• Mental Well-Being: Microstress can also take a toll on your mental health, leading to symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and even depression over time. It can make it challenging to focus, concentrate, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Managing Microstress:

• Mindfulness Meditation: Practice mindfulness meditation to stay present and aware of your emotions. This can help you recognize when microstressors are accumulating and take steps to address them.

• Time Management: Prioritize tasks and create a daily schedule. By

breaking your day into manageable chunks, you can reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed by microstressors.

• Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries at work and in your personal life. Learn to say no when necessary and protect your time and energy.

• Regular Exercise: Physical activity is an excellent way to reduce stress. Even a short walk or a few minutes of stretching can help alleviate the tension caused by microstress.

• Connect with Nature: Spending time in nature can be calming and rejuvenating. It’s an effective way to disconnect from the demands of daily life. Here in Santa Barbara, it’s easy: Take a walk on the beach. When’s the last time you did that?

• Practice Deep Breathing: When you encounter a microstressor, take a moment to practice deep breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Breathing deeply signals our parasympathetic nervous system to calm the body down.

• Social Support: Share your concerns with friends and loved ones. Sometimes, just talking about your microstressors can provide relief.

• Limit Inputs: Excessive screen time, especially on social media, can expose you to unnecessary microstressors. Consider setting boundaries on your digital consumption.

• If You Don’t Talk It Out, You Will Act It Out: Be curious why someone or something is the way that it is. Be mindful of the story you are telling yourself, because it might not be true.

• Acceptance: As Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said when asked about the secret to being married 56 years, “It helps to be a little deaf.” These words are a helpful reminder that there is always another option: Don’t say anything at all and get on with your day.

Microstress may be small, but its cumulative impact on your health and well-being can be significant. By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can manage microstress and enjoy more balance. Remember that small changes can lead to big improvements in your overall quality of life.

Granada Hosts Exquisite Legends Gala

On September 16, The Granada Theatre hosted yet another exquisite Legends Gala, this time honoring philanthropists Brooks and Kate Firestone, Ensemble Theatre Company, and Fannie Flagg.

Guests were greeted at the theater entrance and in the foyer by young State Street Ballet trainees sporting classic white tutus and posing in iconic Giselle second act poses. It was a taste of a performance to come State Street Ballet will perform Giselle next month to music by fellow resident company, the Santa Barbara Symphony.

The 240 guests enjoyed an extended reception in the Founders Room and in the lobby areas, followed by dinner on an elegantly appointed stage. Master of Ceremonies Andrew Firestone, son of Brooks and Kate, began the program on a jovial note, remarking that “most importantly, we are here tonight to honor Kate Firestone —philanthropist, soloist at the Royal Ballet but my contract obligation says that I have to mention her date, Brooks Firestone.”

Son-in-law David Walker introduced Brooks and Kate, regaling guests with stories of times shared and noting that “these guys live big, big, useful lives, guided by absolutely timeless principles, and have a ‘carpe diem’ spirit like I have never encountered.” He went on to exude how they are an inspiration to him, his family, and, he suspects, to many others present.

In a video, Kate shared how she and Brooks met in 1956 on a date arranged by friends following one of her performances at the Old Metropolitan Opera House in New York. When she saw Brooks, she related, she knew right away that he was the man she would marry.

Brooks explained how after 12 years in the tire business, they moved here and established the first estate winery in the county and were part of the wine revolution here. As for their passions, Brooks remarked that “we love our family, we love working, we love being involved in the performing arts, and we love singing together around the world.”

They both lauded The Granada Theatre a symbol of the community and center for the performing arts that brings to Santa Barbara so many wonderful productions, which people used to have to go to L.A. to see.

In another comic moment, Brooks stated that they were

at a loss for words to express their joy and pleasure for this honor, so they asked some of their friends to help. Instantly, the loge lit up and several dozen members of the S.B. Choral Society, with whom the couple has been singing for 20 years, sang “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Before the tribute to the Ensemble Theatre Company (ETC), Jonathan McEuen gave an outstanding performance of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” giving guests a tease of ETC’s musical coming in December.

In presenting the award to ETC, longtime boardmember and supporter Derek Westen detailed the original plan years ago for ETC and the Granada to create a theater together. An inability to acquire all the land rights led the two to pursue separate fundraising efforts which, Westen related, was a brilliant decision because the two theaters have gone on to complement each other, guided by the common goal of creating a vibrant performing arts district.

In accepting the award, new ETC Board Chair Bob Turbin noted that ETC has always been a team effort, but singled out Jonathan Fox, “the driving artistic force for 17 years,” for being primarily responsible for ETC’s reputation locally and internationally. Fox departed ETC earlier this year, but he was present for the honor.

Next, Opera Santa Barbara entertained guests with a performance of “O Sole Mio.” Then Fannie Flagg’s longtime friend Susan Gulbransen introduced Flagg, noting how Flagg overcame the challenge of writing with dyslexia to author short stories and novels, including Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café and 10 other books. On a personal note, Gulbransen praised Flagg for her focus on others.

The Granada Theatre had nearly 100 events in the 2022-23 year. It is the most visible part of the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts, which also includes partners the Lobero Theatre and the New Vic Theatre and eight resident companies: CAMA, Music Academy, Opera Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Choral Society, Santa Barbara Symphony, State Street Ballet, American Theatre Guild, and UCSB Arts & Lectures.

The Granada is dependent on donors it covers only about half of its expenses through ticket sales, rental income, and investment income.

NEW BOOK ON SILENT MOVIES IN SANTA BARBARA

Author and historian Betsy J. Green became hooked on silent movies when she was working on her series of books known as the “Way Back When” series, which focus on life in Santa Barbara during the early twentieth century, specifically in the “19teens”. Betsy says she combed the Santa Barbara newspaper archives from that time period day by day, looking for interesting topics. The deeper she got into her research, the more that articles about The Flying A studios captured her attention. She also noted which movies were playing in the theaters at the time, and tried to watch them online. They were all

silent films, since ‘talkies’ didn’t debut until the late twenties. “Silent movies are a fun way to learn about history – how people dressed, what their homes were like, transportation, people’s attitudes, etc. For me, silent movies are a form of time travel,” Betsy shared.

This love of silent films turned into plans for a trilogy of books on the subject. Last year, Betsy released “Movies & Million-Dollar Mansions, Silent Movies made in Montecito, CA” and earlier this month, she released the second book in the series: “Behind the Scenes at the “Flying A”; the highlights, hijinks, and hazards of silent-era filming in Santa Barbara.”

“Behind the Scenes...” contains more than 300 photos of actors, actresses, and scenes from the movies, and includes dozens of vintage movie cartoons to color or just enjoy. Most of the stories focus on the Flying A Studios, which were located here in Santa Barbara, while a few of the tales involve Hollywood studios that filmed here locally.

When asked about her love for silent movies, Betsy explains, “I’m a very visual person, so I don’t really miss the dialogue. Of course, most silent movies had subtitles (intertitles). I also enjoy seeing how the acting styles changed over the years. In the earliest silent movies, actors used very broad gestures that they had used in live theaters so that audience members sitting in the last row could see them. Betsy plans to release the third book in the series next summer, about silent movies filmed on the Channel Islands. She is the author of the Great House Detective column in the Santa Barbara Independent real estate section, and a frequent lecturer on houses and history.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties’ local offices held a family BBQ event last month at Tucker’s Grove Park. The event was conceived as an appreciation party to recognize all of the agents who support The Charitable Foundation in an ongoing manner by donating directly from each commission they earn. New members were also introduced to the Charitable Foundation and how they can provide support. Charitable Foundation committee member Joe Parker shared, “We had a blast at Tuckers Grove with a DJ, a photo booth, BBQ from the Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch, games, and raffle prizes.” The Charitable Foundation is made up of five chapters from Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange County, and Santa Barbara. Each chapter is run by its own local board of directors and funds causes in the local community. The Charitable
