The word SHIRODHARA literally means:
SHIRA- Head
DHARA- Stream
Shirodhara is an ayurvedic procedure and forms an important part of detox therapy for the removal of toxins from the mind. Keeping our minds healthy is essentially important for the prevention of any disease. Also, mental relaxation is needed to cure any disease pathology.
There are several different types of liquids or dhara that can be used in the Shirodhara therapy, each with its own unique properties and benefits:
Snehadhara: It involves the use of warm medicated oils .
Takradhara: It involves the use of Buttermilk.
Ksheeradhara: It invovles the use of warm milk.
Jaladhara: It involves the use of warm water.
Tailadhara: It involves the use of warm medicated herbal oils mixed with milk.
Dhanyamladhara: It involves the use of a special fermented herbal liquid, which have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Preparation: You will lie down on a massage table or bed, and the practitioner will place a towel or cloth around your forehead and over your eyes to protect them from the oil.
Warm-up: The practitioner will typically begin with a brief head and scalp massage to help you relax and prepare for the main part of the therapy.
Pouring: The warm oil is then poured in a continuous stream from a special vessel or pot called a dhara onto your forehead, typically starting at the center of the forehead and moving slowly in a circular pattern. The oil is usually poured for 30-60 minutes, although the exact time may vary depending on your needs and preferences.
Massage: During the pouring, the practitioner may also use their hands to massage your scalp, neck, and shoulders to help you relax even further.
