Join these batik artists who exhibited in the Own Your Own exhibit at the Arts Center. This course is ideal for beginners, including artists and quilters who would like to incorporate batik into their work. Students will learn to plan a batik, use a tjaunting tool to apply wax, and mix dyes. It is geared to make a difficult technique easy to learn. All materials included.

In this highly complex technological time, the hands-on experience of buiding a chair sculpture is an engaging and sensual way to renew the human spirit. This workshop with professional artist Johanna Goodman asks the participants to create their personal hero on a wooden chair using recycled materials. Using pieces of wood as an armature, and wrapping with foam and chicken wire as a core, the form is ready to receive modeling paste and strips of fabric to create a head. Modeling paste is applied with a palette knife in layers, alternating with fabric to attain the desired surface.

For this one day workshop, the student will need to bring a sturdy, wooden chair of any size, old clothing, found objects of their choice, palette knives, any acrylic paint on hand, and a photo of someone admired, living or dead. We will supply a gallon of modeling paste, brushes, Elmers glue, and recycled fabric. See Johanna’s website for her fascinating work at www.okovic.com.
