FROM THE CEO Visionary artist Alex Grey said, “When artists give form to revelation, their art can advance, deepen and potentially transform the consciousness of their community.” This is only one reason that I’m so proud of the positive impact that the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, and the arts community as a whole, plays in southern Colorado. We see it every day in the face of a child experiencing their first play. It’s seen in a couple enjoying a new exhibition and in the rapt attention of school children on a tour. It’s in the total, serious concentration of a dancer preparing for a performance at our School of Dance. It is very apparent when you gauge the overall economic impact we see in our recently released 2017 Cultural & Economic Impact Statement. Did you know that in 2017 the Arts Center had 127,421 visitors from 45 states and 10 foreign countries, including 120 cities/towns within Colorado? The Arts Center drives the local economy with nearly $2 million spent on payroll, goods and services in Pueblo. As a driver of tourism, we learned from the study that over 60% of visitors that came to see last summer’s Sordid & Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt’s Etchings exhibit were from outside Pueblo. Findings from the statement have been Arts Center CEO Jim Richerson with Charles and Jeanette Gilchrist White presented to the county commissioners and will be presented to Pueblo City Council on June 14 at 5:30 PM. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work.” - Daniel Burnham As we continue to track our visitors and impact, we’ve undertaken a Marketing and Business study with the Hasan School of Business and Dr. Michael Wakefield. This partnership with our University and Healy Fellowship students will analyze our strengths, challenges, and where we are positioned to grow to better serve the community. This report should be complete by the end of 2018, at which time we hope to share our results with you. Our sincerest thanks to the Rawlings Foundation for funding this study. We are very excited to be hosting Journey Into Imagimation: 100 Years of Animation Art from Around the World this summer beginning June 2 with a preview on June 1 during our 46th Anniversary Gala. This exhibit celebrates the 100-plus year history of original rare animation production artwork since the creation of this magical art form. This extensive exhibition presents the full range of animation techniques and features more than 130 works of art. The Buell Children’s Museum will host a companion exhibit, Super Squad 5: Comics, Cartoons, & Creativity, beginning June 10 with information about the history of cartooning, the development of the comic book genre (especially relating to superheroes), and a station to build your own comic book - complete with characters & story. Children will learn about the five elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, & story) through a narrative with a superhero based on each element as the students do their part to combat various super-villains at the project stations. Our 2018-19 Performing Arts season is just around the corner. We are so excited to continue with Center Stage performances, the Children’s Playhouse productions, and the continually expanding Regional Series. The Performing Arts, including our School of Dance, grew 70% from 2016 to 2017 and we see that growth continuing well into the future. We are only as good as our people. My deepest thanks to the staff, volunteers, board members, our members, supporters, and visitors of this wonderful institution who make serving our mission a reality each and every day.

“Top Hand,” George Phippen

“Out Our Way,” J.R. Williams

Showing the lighter side of Western and Cowboy culture, we will feature artists from the King Collection who were also cartoonists - artists such as Fred Harman, George Phippen, Bill Chappell, and Kim Mackey. On display are examples of Western and Cowboy comic books, dime novels and the Wrangler comics. J. R. Williams’ Out Our Way gang and the Red Ryder stories make an appearance and bring up some questions about the way we tell the stories of the Cowboys. Look for a humorous look at the cowboy life from Chris Ledoux, Wally Badgett, and more.

JUNE 9 - SEPTEMBER 7 | HOAG GALLERY Featuring original artwork and concepts, In Sequence: the Art of Comics is an exhibition juried by Dave McKean which will open in conjunction with other animation and cartoon-themed exhibits and programs at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center and the Buell Children’s Museum. Several prizes will be awarded, including Best of Show, 1st Prize, and 2nd Prize.

JUNE 2 - SEPTEMBER 23 | WHITE GALLERY A Journey into IMAGIMATION: A Hundred Years of Animation Art From Around the World celebrates the ongoing 100-plus-year history of original rare animation production artwork since the creation of this magical art form. This extensive exhibition presents the full range of animation techniques, from the ground breaking traditional animation of Gertie the Dinosaur created by American, Winsor McCay, in 1914, through todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many digitally supported animation productions and applications. This exhibit features more than 130 works of art, forming a timeline of the evolution of international animation. This exhibition has been collated from the vast 29,000+ piece original international animation art collection preserved over several decades by animation historians and professionals Hal and Nancy Miles, founders of the Animation Hall of Fame.

“Autumn Where Darkness Shines,” John Mendoza

JOHN L. MENDOZA The work of John L. Mendoza is a diary of the man and his view of life. His oil paintings and watercolors bespeak romance, nostalgia, and natural beauty. Many of his paintings display dual characteristics. They are gentle yet passionate, simple yet detailed, bold yet subtle, and concrete yet abstract. His work includes contemporary, oil, and watercolor landscapes, as well as still life, abstracts, and portraits.

DOROTHY J. MENDOZA Exploring different media and technique has been the history of Dorothy’s paintings. Always curious to explore the various methods of artistic expression, Dorothy began painting in oils. She continued to work for years in gouche and watercolor. In 1998, she began experimenting with acrylics, merging the fluid transparent quality of watercolor with the opacity of oils and gouche. The result is exciting and vibrant paintings full of color and spirit.

SEPT 15 - NOV 11 | REGIONAL & HOAG GALLERIES Tom Vail was born in Hollywood, CA in 1946. He says in his artist statement, “Writing about my art work is an exercise I find difficult. I could go into the formal aspects of my art but the most important part is unexplainable. In the collages, a dark humor about the human condition seems to be a recurring element — the use of collage to attack bourgeois values with its own propaganda images. The kinetic photographs explore the space-time dynamics using the female figure as subject.” The images were printed using photo, silkscreen, hand-tint prints, and archival digital prints. “Hamburger Jihad,” Tom Vail

Francis King’s original donation of artworks in 1979 forms the cornerstone of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center’s permanent collection. For nearly 40 years, Mr. King, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, and other generous donors have been augmenting this fabulous collection. This exhibit will feature some of the best-known names in traditional Western art, including John Clymer, Frank McCarthy, Joseph Sharpe, Gerald Cassidy, and Oscar Berninghaus.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti. Les Ballets Trockadero first performed in the late-late shows in OffOff Broadway lofts. The Trocks, as they are affectionately known, quickly garnered a major critical essay by Arlene Croce in The New Yorker, and combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice, established the Company as an artistic and popular success.

When the accusing finger points to his wife, John Proctor is forced to confront his past and determine his future. INGREDIENTS 1 (4-ounce) bottle glue 1/2 cup warm water 1 teaspoon Borax Food coloring, optional

DIRECTIONS Squeeze the bottle of glue into a plastic container. Fill bottle with warm water and then add to the glue. Stir with a plastic spoon. Add your food coloring if desired, and stir until mixed. Combine 1/2 cup water and borax, then slowly add to the glue mixture, stirring as you go. You do not need to use all of the solution, just until it starts to thicken. Using your hands, knead the slime until it holds together. It will be wet and gooey at first, but just keep kneading until it all comes together. Store in container with lid, or in a zip top bag.

ABOUT THE ARTS ASSOCIATES ~ PURPOSE ~

The Sangre de Cristo Arts Associates provide volunteers to assist the Arts Center staff with activities such as mass mailings, ushering at performing arts events, preparation of Christmas displays, assisting in the Children’s Museum, staffing the Ryals Library, working in gift shops and helping with tours and large groups.

~ MEETINGS ~

Meetings are held 9 times a year from January to May and September to December. Regular meeting time is the 3rd Monday of the month at 9:30 AM at various locations in the Arts Center. Exception: January and February meetings are on Tuesdays. Arts Center Associates dues are $25 per year plus the membership level of your choice to the Arts Center
