FROM THE CEO Dear Arts Center Members, 2019 is the year of the Arts Center! I am proud to share the wonderful programming and exciting renovation plans we have in store for you this year. As you can see from my “portrait” as the raffle man (Thank you, Dr. Barry Rapp, for this wonderful birthday present), I am always looking for the next opportunity to raise funds to support the Center’s mission of creating artistic learning experiences for all. One such opportunity presented itself when the Hamilton family generously donated a classic 1995 Mercedes E320 twodoor black coupe convertible in honor of the “Luster: Realism and Hyperrealism in Contemporary Automobile & Motorcycle Painting” exhibit. We are only selling 1,000 raffle tickets which are available for $50 each. The drawing will take place on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at 6 PM in conjunction with the public kickoff for the Chile & Frijole Festival held each year at the Arts Center by the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce. Raffle tickets may be purchased from any Board of Trustee member, at the Arts Center’s Welcome Center, or by calling (719) 295-7200. “Mr Raffle Man” by Dr. Barry M. Rapp

Throughout the past year, fellows from the Hasan School of Business, part of Colorado State University-Pueblo, have conducted research and published a report with their findings. They found that in 2018 alone, your Arts Center had an economic impact of $7.19 million in the Pueblo community. That is a 960% return on investment of public funds! See page 26 for more interesting findings from this report. Thanks to the generous support of the Robert H. Rawlings Foundation, this fall we will break ground on a new Learning Center in the garden level of the Buell Children’s Museum. This space will hold up to 30 students for music and other classes as well as provide much needed room for storage of instruments. This increase in the capacity of our Friday Arts Academy program plus new rental space will help us to further our mission. Design work is being carried out by HGF Architects of Pueblo, who have been the Arts Center’s architects since the center was created in 1972. We anticipate the grand opening in summer 2020. Thank you for your continued support of the arts in Southern Colorado,

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, cars and motorcycles have not only been ubiquitous on the nation’s streets and highways, but also in film, top forty hits, and in painting. With the emergence of photo-realism in the 1960’s, motor vehicles assumed a special place of distinction as subject matter in the iconography of American art. “Luster” encompasses a broad range of cars and motorcycles from vintage vehicles from the 1940’s to more recent classics. “Luster: Realism and Hyperrealism in Contemporary Automobile and Motorcycle Painting,” is comprised of over 55 paintings by 15 of today’s realists and hyperrealists who specialize in automobiles and motorcycles as their primary subject. Artists include (in alphabetical order): A.D. Cook (Las Vegas, NV), Randy Ford (Eastampton, NJ), Allan Gorman (West Orange, NJ), Marc G. Jones (Loveland, CO), Cheryl Kelley (Northern California), Richard Lewis (Los Angeles, CA), Lory Lockwood (New Orleans, LA), Robert Petillo (Hardyston, NJ), Kris Preslan (Lake Oswego, OR), Joseph Santos (Buena Park, CA), Ken Scaglia (Weston, CT), John E. Schaeffer (La Grange, TX), Guenevere “Moto Painter” Schwien (Portland, OR), and Harold Zabady (Camp Hill, PA). Their work exemplifies the very best of automotive painting being done today, and builds on that of the first wave of photo-realists in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, which included the likes of Harold Cleworth, Don Eddy, Richard Estes, and Ralph Goings. Like the shiny automobiles and motorcycles portrayed by the exhibit’s artists, this exhibit’s paintings can be characterized by the luster that permeates their imagery. Chrome ornamentation and trim together with enameled bodywork, glass, and interior fabrication to meet the needs of purpose-built vehicles of all sorts: these are the surfaces which recent realists and hyperrealists have exploited to generate true, virtuosic masterpieces. Serving as curator for “Luster: Realism and Hyperrealism in Contemporary Automobile and Motorcycle Painting,” is David J. Wagner, who earned his Ph.D. in American Studies and served as a museum director for 20 years.

THE TIMME COLLECTION: Motorcycles & Ephemera from the Forney Museum of Transportation JUNE 8 - SEPT 15 Walt Timme’s motorcycle dealership was a fixture in Downtown Pueblo for almost 65 years. In 1938, Timme and a friend each chipped in $200 and borrowed $1,000 more from the bank to open an Indian Motorcycle dealership on South Union Avenue. Timme maintained a collection of bikes including his favorite antique Indians. These and accompanying materials were donated to the Forney Museum of Transportation after his death in 2005 by the Walter and Lucille Timme Foundation. He belonged to the Antique Motorcycle Club of America, and he and his wife Lucille were inducted as a couple into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The pieces on exhibit were chosen to represent the array and vastness of the Timme collection which resides in Denver.

OUTSIDER ART THE COLLECTION OF VICTOR KEEN

White Gallery | October 5 - January 12, 2020

THE COLLECTOR VICTOR KEEN

Victor Keen’s interest in and knowledge of outsider art was initiated and developed through a thirty-five year long friendship with Frank Maresca, co-founder of Ricco Maresca gallery, a prominent art dealer in Manhattan. Although his acquisitions are substantially made up of works created by self-taught artists, his collecting has not been limited to outsider art alone.

Also in the Galleries... KING GALLERY In her book, Great and Mighty Things*, Ann Percy defines Outsider Art: Originally used to describe art that was created by individuals coping with mental illness or living outside the boundaries of established culture, the term “outsider art” is now used more generally to encompass a great many artists who can more accurately be identified as “selftaught.” The majority of these artists do not necessarily earn their livings creating paintings or sculpture; to the contrary, they exist with limited or no connection to the art world as we define it via galleries, museums, schools, curators, dealers, critics and collectors. To put it simply, outsider art is made by individuals who are driven to create by their own particular inner compulsions. This fall, Pueblo native Victor Keen brings his extensive collection of outsider art to share with the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center and the community. Victor Keen created the Bethany Mission Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, as a space to showcase this collection. He continues to seek out the artists and artworks that interest him not only visually, but also through the stories they tell. Paramount to seeking out the paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures as objects themselves, Keen’s true passion lies in finding connections with the artists and cultivating meaningful relationships with them through his acquisitions. *Philadelphia: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2013

THE COLLECTOR’S AESTHETIC: Victor Keen SEPT 14 - JAN 5 Victor Keen’s interest in collecting encompasses much more than outsider art. He has also assembled an extensive array of Catalin radios, antique toys and banks, milk glass, toasters, vintage postcards, etc., many of which are housed in the Bethany Mission Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. This exhibition highlights a sampling of these collections with examples of radios, toys and banks, and vintage worker’s ID badges in conjunction with the White Gallery’s exhibition of outsider art.

Dave Duros presents STEAMPUNK CURIOSITIES SEPT 21 - NOV 10 Dave Duros reappears at the Arts Center with amazing new works that will astound and enthrall the viewer. He magically transforms discarded refuse into works of art in the “Steampunk” aesthetic. The Steampunk genre incorporates anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction. Don’t miss the return of “Dr. Orphic”!

GEORGE WIDENER: From the Collection of Victor Keen SEPT 28 - JAN 12 George Widener (b.1962, Cincinnati, Ohio) is a self-taught artist and calendar savant who employs his extraordinary mathematical & calculating capabilities along with memorized census population statistics to create artworks based around significant dates and historical events. His works often employ complex date juxtapositions and bold numerical patterns that support an overarching theme like the sinking of the Titanic, one of his more prominent motifs. Now a close friend of the artist, Keen has been fascinated by Widener’s use of hundreds of numbers, letters, dates, arrows and symbols that surround and support the fundamental themes of each artwork. Numbers, dates, days, months, shapes and color come together in perfectly structured, elaborate patterns often composed on found paper or pieced together paper napkins.

“Pi Target” by George Widener

His work can be found in many private and public Outsider Art collections, including the Bruno Decharme ABDCD Collection in Paris, The American Folk Art Museum, The Art Collection of the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute and The Collection de l’Art Brut. Widener lives in the mountain town of Waynesville, North Carolina and travels abroad frequently.

A SPIRIT OF TRADITION: From the Bishop Tafoya Collection SEPT 7 - JAN 19 Santos have been made for centuries, dating back to the early Spanish Colonial era. In the Americas, local expressions and native materials created a distinctly New World style. Today, dedicated artists are still creating santos, working within an evolving tradition steeped in a rich history, but adapting to modern society. This exhibit features select santos from Bishop Tafoya, Ruth Gast and others from the permanent collection at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center.

TONY “THE BRICKLAYER” PERNICIARO AUG 31 - NOV 10 Tony “The Bricklayer” Perniciaro was born in 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. A working class Sicilian-American, Perniciaro found his way to Pueblo in the late ‘70s. Perniciaro was an untrained “outsider” artist who started as a poet, eventually integrating drawings and color into his politically and socially-charged poetry. Perniciaro’s drawings and paintings are an impressive mix of naiveté and sophistication.

PERFORMING ARTS

MUST SEE SEASON AN EVENING WITH C.S. LEWIS SUNDAY OCTOBER 13, 2019 AT 2PM

“This show was not a boring memoir of his life, but a telling so rich in detail that you lost your bearings and experienced what he experienced.” -South Florida Insider

The year is 1963 and C.S. Lewis, the famous British author, is hosting a group of American writers at his home near Oxford. They are about to experience a captivating evening with a man whose engaging conversation and spontaneous humor made him one of the great raconteurs of his day. Seated in his living room he recalls the people and events that shaped his life; his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien; why he nearly abandoned the Narnia Chronicles; and more.

NOBUNTU

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2019 AT 7:30PM

“…rich voices and exhilarating rhythms, both physical and vocal, poured out from the stage to enchant a near-capacity crowd.” - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Nobuntu, the female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe, has drawn international acclaim for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts are performed with pure voices, augmented by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano) and authentic dance movements. Nobuntu was nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards in London and has performed in Italy, Austria, Germany, and more.

PIANO BATTLE

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2020 AT 7:30PM

“Piano Battle has the elegance of classic music, the excitement of rock and the energy of hip-hop.” -Newsis, South Korea

The brainchild of internationally accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, see this duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces. The two artists, with distinctly different performance styles, take turns to perform pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Debussy. They will even improvise based on the tunes you request. Winning the audience‘s heart is the only thing that counts!

23

As our modern world grapples with the threats and benefits of technological integration, Aquila Theatre’s production of 1984 provides a space to appreciate the value of individual thought – an evocative and timely narrative of personal freedom against political repression. Today, Orwell’s prescient story resonates around the globe as individuals, systems, and governments clash. 1984 is a classic by one of literature’s most significant authors and provides the kind of evocative and innovative storytelling that suits Aquila’s bold, ensemble driven, physical style.

An extraordinary theatre experience!” - Denver Post

Hilarious and hi-tech, magical and musical, beautiful and touching and, of course, a bit odd. It’s a one-man show where the one man doesn’t talk but somehow speaks to your five senses until you can’t help but blurt out, “Wait, What? How did that happen? THAT’S AWESOME!” As seen on “America’s Got Talent,” this is a heartfelt story packed with charming live feats, spectacular technology, and set to the soundtrack of our lives.

TESTIMONIAL “My Pueblo pride is a part of me that I have held onto since before I moved away for the first time more than 15 years ago. From the only dish that qualifies as green chile to the unique and vibrant culture that make up the city, I love telling people all about Pueblo. One place I am most grateful for while growing up is the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center. I recently applied to and was accepted as an artist-in-residence at the Corvallis Arts Center in Oregon. The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center encouraged me by building a foundation to appreciate art as well as create my own work.

The Arts Center displayed 25 fine arts exhibits in 2018, featuring 540 artists - 215 of which were Southern Colorado residents

Compared with similar institutions, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center holds more than twice the average number of events, and hosts 2.28 times the number of visitors than average. *

Donna Stinchcomb demonstrated the importance of art daily and introduced me to inspirational artists like John Wilbar and Joni Giarratano...Getting to work at the Buell Children’s Museum taught me the magic in art and how to keep it alive. My culture has an artistic cornerstone because of the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center of Pueblo.”

Over 7,070 field trip participants visited the Arts Center on in 2018.

t h g i l t Spo INSTRUCTOR

SYDNEY GETTEL

Dance is a notoriously difficult field for its participants (both physically and mentally), and yet dancers who are passionate and committed to developing a deep understanding of the world of dance often find themselves involved in it forever one way or another. Ms. Sydney Gettel, who has been studying dance at the Sangre de Cristo School of Dance since she was 5 years old, is one such person. Sydney was born and raised in Pueblo and started classes at the Arts Center with Donna Stinchcomb. In 2000, she began studying with artistic directors Karen and Fernando Schaffenburg. During her time studying dance, Sydney was accepted to several summer intensives and workshops, most notably the Joffrey Midwest Dance School summer intensive program, which only accepted one hundred students into its program and of which Sydney was the first Pueblo dancer to take part. After years of ballet performances, including four years as the Sugar Plum Fairy in the annual Nutcracker production, Sydney performed her final performance in the 2011 Sangre de Cristo Ballet’s production of Cinderella, graduated from high school, and followed her passion to the University of Oklahoma where she attended their dance program. She later graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Ballet Pedagogy and a minor in Health and Exercise Science and received numerous awards and scholarships in her time at UO. In 2009, she is quoted with the following regarding her career choices, “I just want ballet to be involved somehow. I’d love to teach. But I love to dance - I love that rush.” The Sangre de Cristo School of Dance happily welcomed her back as an instructor for the 20182019 year. Passionate and committed, indeed.
