FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It has been just a few short months since I arrived in Pueblo and already I can feel the pride and sense of ownership that the community has for the Arts Center. Considering Pueblo’s size, it is truly admirable and noteworthy to have such a place. We often hear people talk about the quality of life that cultural places add to a community, but in the bigger picture, it distinguishes us by providing a “quality of place.” I have heard many stories about how the Arts Center has brought quality not only to Pueblo, but into the lives of so many individuals, especially those who have grown up here.

I have had the privilege to travel and work extensively overseas, providing me with a world view in regard to the ability that cultural opportunities and institutions have to build bridges, open and maintain dialogue between diverse peoples and ideas, and create new ways of seeing things. The arts are an essential component across cultures of expressing and delivering the essence of the human experience.

We invite you to share the cultural experience with us this summer, when we are all about Steampunk: the fashion, the art, and the innovation. Steampunk is an awe-inspiring marriage of western style/Victorian era dress and techno gadgetry, creating objects and images that challenge our associative powers. As you can see by my photo , I am already geared up for our Anniversary Gala on June 6. Come and be amazed by the playful powers of the imagination.

The timing could not be better to work with the entire community on the vision of what we want the Arts Center to be in 2022 when we will be celebrating its 50th anniversary - only eight short years away! Having grown up in Chicago, one of my lifelong heroes has been Daniel Burnham who said, “make no little plans”. So let’s work together and think big as we fashion a future not just for the Arts Center but for the greater Pueblo community. A vibrant Arts Center can be a source of inspiration for such ideas and innovative solutions. Thank you for making me feel so welcome here.

What is STEAMPUNK? Well that depends on who you ask. Some might say that it’s a sci-fi fantasy world, some see it as a lifestyle choice, and to others it represents an alternate version of history. STEAMPUNK merges past and future to show what our world would look like if the future had happened sooner. The setting usually occurs in a Victorian, Western, or Medieval background where steam is the primary source of power.

No matter how you interpret it, the STEAMPUNK genre has become a cultural phenomenon influencing literature, fashion, music, cinema, as well as gaming. At the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, we believe it’s a beautiful expression of art, conveyed in a multitude of ways.

So pull up a chair, kick up your feet, and join us in raising a glass to the “greatest era that never was.”

ART ADVENTURE SUMMER CAMPS

Spend your summer immersed in the arts with fun, affordable camps taught by licensed teachers and/or practicing artists in a professional arts setting. Each thematic week is packed full of artistic experiences just for kids. Includes 30 full hours of great visual and performing arts projects in theater, drawing, painting, sculpting, clay, movement/dance and music. Designed especially for kids entering 1st - 6th grades. Projects also available for older students interested in independent art exploration within the camp structure – please ask!

DANCE FACULTY Stephen Wynne a native of Philadelphia, PA, began his training at the School of the Pennsylvania Ballet. After receiving a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet Theatre for two years in New York City, thereafter he was contracted as a dancer with Joffrey Ballet.Mr. Wynne was offered an opportunity to live in to Europe to work as a professional dancer and attend Codarts University in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Michelle Boutros

has spent many years under the tutelage of numerous teachers of prominence. Ms. Boutros began her dance training from an early age in St. Petersburg, FL under the direction of Andrei Ustinov & Elena Martinson, both graduates of the Vaganova Ballet Academy and dancers with the world-renowned Kirov Ballet, for 11 years. She was a member of Dance Theatre of Florida, Les Jeunes Danseurs, and the Chamber Ballet, where she toured the eastern US as well as overseas.

Brittany Nunes

choreographer, modern and contemporary dancer, was born in Miami, FL, receiving her early training at the age of 3 at Miami Dance Theater School. While in high school, she trained at summer dance intensives with the Alvin Ailey School of Dance in New York City. In 2009 Ms. Nunes graduated on the Dean’s List from Belhaven University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance.

Britta Heermann-Wynne was born in Hamburg, Germany. She studied at the Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Munich; the International Centre of Dance in Cannes, France, at the Hamburg Ballet School under direction of John Neumeier, where she also performed, and under the direction of Ruth Currier, former artistic director of Limon Company, in NY City.
