FROM THE CEO Dear Members, There is nothing cookie-cutter about the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center with its six public galleries, a 500-seat theater with a very active performing arts schedule, a conference center that can host 500, schools of dance and ballet, and our very own Buell Children’s Museum. An Arts Center like ours is an investment in the community that pays back in so many ways - both measured and immeasurable. Along with my team of board members, I’ve been working with Pueblo County for over a year to complete a lease and operating agreement between Pueblo County and the Arts Center which provides the cornerstone for the two entities to work together for the next 30 years.

The Arts Center’s 2015 Economic and Cultural Impact Statement shows that it served more than 125,000 visitors, spent over $800,000 on goods and services in Pueblo County, and secured $2M from outside the County including the planned gift of Chicagoans Charles and Jeanette Gilchrist White’s contemporary southwest art collection. This will add significantly to the permanent collection that began with the Francis King collection, which now has more than 2,500 artworks.

Without the Arts Center, such outstanding cultural investments would simply pass Pueblo by. When you look back over the Arts Center’s records, it has averaged 100,000 visitors a year. This means in its 44-year history of service, 4.4 million have visited!

Last year, over 200 private events were held at the Arts Center, hosting more than 31,000 people. In addition, the Arts Center held 375 classes, 7 camps, and 149 workshops with 1,200+ participants. Over 7,700 students, with chaperones, visited on field trips. The Arts Center provides a wide range of volunteer and mentoring opportunities with 125+ volunteers giving 4,760 hours of their time valued at $100,000+. Local artists are featured in 75% of the Arts Center’s mix of exhibitions. International shows like Michelangelo’s bozzetti have attracted visitors from 90 other cities in Colorado, 39 states and citizens from Australia, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine, Finland, Scotland, Pakistan, Philippines and the Netherlands.

The future is not about how fast or cheaply things can be made and sold. The future is about creativity and innovation. The Arts Center provides a wealth of learning platforms that serve to inspire and invigorate all who visit. It is an investment that shall contribute greatly to a healthy and ever-more attractive Pueblo and Southern Colorado.

Association’s traveling art exhibition shows interpretations using a circular format as a background, support, or within a frame.

Beyond vast landscapes, this exhibit of nation-wide photographers highlights historical, urban, and cultural parks, as well as National Park Service programs that protect, preserve and share nature, culture, and history in communities nationwide. Juried by nationally renowned Denver photographer, publisher, teacher and environmentalist, John Fielder.

The paintings Deibler creates are all based upon reality - a real time, a real place, a real person. Says Deibler, “By going to the source of my inspiration, I am able to more accurately find what it is that inspires me and attempt to convey that vision to my viewer.”

This exhibit showcases the work of photographer emeritus, John Suhay, the first artist-in-residence at the Arts Center. Experience the story of Pueblo and its people as seen through the lens of Pueblo’s photographer.

The geometric drawings in this exhibition are reminiscent of the “black light” poster art of the 1960s and deal with line, curves, depth, and perspective involving mathematical equations.

Floyd has been called “the most prolific commercial photographer of his day” in Pueblo. These prints

by John Wilbur Clarence Floyd were pulled by John Suhay from historical glass negatives rescued from the city dump.

Southern Colorado Watercolor Society presents this annual exhibition to promote the fine art of Watermedia to the public.

Explore photos from the Steelworks Center of the West and compare the landscape of Pueblo with photographs taken in approximately the same period as Ansel Adams’.

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION Considered by Ansel to be his finest work, this exhibition includes 72 works from the collection of the photographer’s daughter, Anne Adams-Helms, for whom he personally produced these prints. Adams felt these photographs were the finest examples of the quality and range of his achievement.

These images are those by which Adams wanted to be remembered. The artist organized 16 similar sets (referred to as “The Museum Set”) at the urging of The Museum of Modern Art’s photography curator, John Szarkowski. This collection of works by the conservationist and world-famous photographer has been on tour internationally, arriving from its previous display in Seoul, Korea, and is one of the most complete of the 16 sets.

With some of Adams’ most famous and best-loved photographs, this exhibit encompasses the entire scope of his work - elegant details of nature, architectural studies, portraits, and above all the magnificent landscapes for which he is so revered. The exhibition spans the scope of Adams’ Western landscapes, including seminal images such as Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico and El Capitan Fall, Yosemite National Park. Images like Winnowing Grain, Taos Pueblo; Saint Francis Church, Ranchos de Taos; Ghost Ranch Hills; Aspens; Spanish American Woman, near Chimayo; and Pool, Acoma Pueblo are especially reminiscent of the southwestern landscapes cherished by the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center.

HOMEMADE FLOUR TORTILLAS

4 cups flour 2 tsp salt 3 tsp baking powder 1/3 cup Crisco shortening 11/2 cups warm water Mix dry ingredients until the mixture resembles cornmeal. Add water, slowly mixing and kneading. Let the dough set for 5 minutes. Heat griddle to 350 degrees. Pinch dough into 8 to 10 balls. Flatten and roll to 8 inch size. Cook on the griddle. It takes about two minutes per side to cook.

CALLING ALL YOUNG ACTORS & ACTRESSES! Missoula Children’s Theatre presents “Aladdin” for its Summer 2016 workshop. Up to 60 young actors and actresses will audition, practice, and put on a performance for the public - all in one week!

Jerica Khosla graduated from the University of Denver in 2014, earning a BA in both French and Theatre with a Distinction in Acting. She is a proud alumnus of the Pueblo City Schools and Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Musical, having participated in the program for eight years. Some of her favorite roles have included playing Penny Lou Pingleton in Hairspray and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. Jerica is currently the Drama Director at Centennial High School and enjoys picking new and interesting pieces to challenge her students.

There is no fee to audition. Are you new to Pueblo or recently retired? Or are you just looking to explore new things and learn more about various forms of art while making new friends? If so, please join the Arts Associates at one of our monthly meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month at 9:30 a.m. Some of our most recent meetings have included painters, sculptors, weavers, authors, musicians, and dancers – it runs the gamut of all the arts. You will be among a fun group of people who volunteer as much or as little as suits their lifestyle. In addition to the monthly meetings, we take fun road trips during the summer, visiting artists in their own homes, or getting an insider look into an artist’s creative process. This summer, we will be making trips to La Veta, La Junta, and a behind the scenes tour of some historic buildings right here in Pueblo. We’d love to have you join us!

Good news! Congress recently passed a tax bill that permanently extends the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) provision, which lets people over age 70½ transfer up to $100,000 from their IRA to charity and have it count as their required minimum distribution (RMD) without increasing their adjusted gross income. Keeping the money out of your adjusted gross income can be valuable if it helps you avoid a higher tax bracket or keeps your income below the threshold for the Medicare high-income surcharge, which boosts your Part B and Part D premiums if your adjusted gross income is above $85,000 if you’re single or $170,000 for joint filers. Keeping the money out of your adjusted gross income may also reduce the amount of your Social Security benefits that are subject to taxes. It’s also a way to benefit from making a charitable contribution if you don’t itemize your deductions on your tax return.

There is no requirement that the entire amount be made in one transfer or that the entire amount go to a single qualified charitable organization. Donors can request multiple direct transfers from their IRA to qualified charities in a year, but only $100,000 will be excluded from income as an IRA qualified charitable distribution.

To take advantage of the IRA charitable distribution, the distribution must be sent directly from the IRA custodian to the charity.

It is suggested that you counsel with your tax advisor and/or your investment advisor to determine the impact on your personal situation.
