Summer of Fun, Make it Memorable! Summer time is fun time! If you are traveling or staying here in San Diego, make it memorable. Get the kids involved — asking for their input and making decisions together gives everyone a say. Jody Cates, our local “Parenting with Purpose” writer, provides great summer planning and travel tips. For instance, don’t overschedule. Instead, plan one activity per day, relax and enjoy the memory. Find more of Jody’s tips on page 26. What can you do here in San Diego County? Check out the Best of San Diego Summer, starting on page 16. There are activities including places to go, educational outings, fun events and more. Keeping semi-active throughout the summer is important. The kids cannot be in front of the computer or texting friends all summer long, but they can do things together. Have your child ask a friend to come with your family to events. Start Independence Day with a parade and end the day with fireworks. Jenny, our calendar editor, features lots of July Fourth activities on page 32. And, of course, you have to have food at your celebration. Learn how to make a yummy red, white and blue cheesecake on page 46, presented by Jackie Bruchez, local blogger and cookbook author. I would like to thank everyone who gave us feedback in the San Diego Family Magazine readership survey. We love hearing from our readers. Have a great summer! Enjoy your family, have fun connecting and making memories. Save the date: Our second annual All-Inclusive Day of Play (in partnership with the Special Needs Resource Foundation of San Diego) is August 7. Keep an eye on Facebook for details.

What does “best of San Diego summer” mean to you? Adrienne Sigeti, editorial assistant A sunny day wandering around the San Diego County Fair listening to live music, checking out the art exhibits and braving the rides, of course. Preferably while holding something fried in one hand and something sweet in the other. You can’t beat it! Jody Lee Cates, freelance writer It wouldn’t be summer in San Diego for my family without a bonfire at the beach. We get there early, play all day and then roast hot dogs and marshmallows with friends while the sun goes down over the ocean. It’s pure magic! Lisa Gipson, managing editor Summer means lots of basketball since my daughter plays club. This is her last year — and she just returned from a torn ACL — so we plan to enjoy every minute! In between tournaments, you’ll find us roaming our coastal communities, hitting ice cream shops and touring colleges. Tony Andrews, marketing representative We remind ourselves daily that living in San Diego is living someone else’s vacation. Our best San Diego summers include lots of beach days with friends and family, taking advantage of our great food scene and being a tourist by going to local theme parks!
