SLEEP SMARTS
Essential Advice for Parents on Children’s ZZZ’s
by Gina Rosenfeld, MD
Regardless of your visit, pediatricians frequently find a way to ask about and discuss the importance of sleep. With summer around the corner and just a few more months of school, sleep is an ever-important topic to discuss. Sleep plays a key role in physical and mental functioning at every age.
How you feel, act, react, learn, and work in part depends on what happens when you sleep.
How you feel while awake depends partly on what happens while you sleep. During sleep, your body supports healthy brain function and maintains physical health. Sleep is not just a restful state for children and teens but a critical support system for growth and development. Inadequate sleep over time can elevate the risk for chronic health problems and impact cognitive abilities, learning, and social interactions. Understanding how sleep affects the body is important for parents to ensure the well-being of their children and teens.
Sleep is vital for children as their bodies and minds develop; it affects every aspect of health. Unlike our quiet physical state, the brain is quite active during sleep, carrying out many vital functions.
So, how much sleep is enough, what are the effects of poor sleep, and what habits are essential to good sleep?
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) offers recommendations for children’s total daily sleep needs by age group. Their recommendations serve as a general target, but it’s important to remember that a healthy amount of sleep will vary among babies and
kids based on various factors, including their temperament and developmental differences.
• Infants aged 4 to 11 months should get between 12 and 16 hours of sleep daily. While some infants may begin sleeping through the night at around 5 or 6 months old, they still obtain a significant portion of their overall sleep from daytime naps. Babies spend more than half of their time sleeping because this is a period of substantial growth.
• Toddlers should get between 11 and 14 hours of total sleep every day. Their napping decreases and frequently accounts for 1 to 2 hours of daily sleep.
• Preschool-aged children, 3 to 5 years old, should get 10 to 13 hours of sleep daily. Naps may get shorter or even stop on a regular basis.
• School-age children, 6 to 12 years old, should get between 9 and 12 total hours of sleep every day. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep can lead to challenging behaviors, reduced learning and memory retention, and a tendency toward poor eating and growth in young children.
• Adolescents should get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep per night; unfortunately, many do not. Adolescents are often sleep-deprived due to biological changes in their brains, which affect when they feel sleepy. Even if they need more sleep, their brains are not ready for bed early. Research consistently shows that students who get more sleep have fewer motor vehicle accidents, better grades, and improved mental health.
Healthy habits are essential to good sleep. Practicing good habits all year long, even during summer and vacation, is important. Consistency is key!
Remember, as with everything in parenting, you
are your children’s biggest role model. Set an example and make sleep a priority for yourself.
• Show your children it’s part of a healthy lifestyle—like eating right and exercising regularly.
• Plenty of daily exercise and fresh air is key to being tired in the evening.
• Keep your kids on a routine; the same waking, meal, nap, and play times will help with a smooth bedtime. As much as possible, try and keep the routine during summer and vacations.
• Start them early with a bedtime routine such as bath, brush, book, and bed. Ensure your routine can work even when away from home.
• Keep the bedroom dim and cool before bedtime.
• Avoid filling the bed with toys.
• Keep TVs, computers, laptops, tablets, and phones out of children’s bedrooms, especially at night.
• Turn off all screens at least 60 minutes before bedtime.
Remember, by nurturing healthy sleep habits today, you’re not just ensuring a well-rested child, but laying the foundation for a lifetime of thriving health and happiness.
Happy Spring and Happy Sleeping! :)

“This photo was taken right after I became a single mom. It captures the start of a new chapter, when I began to embrace self-love, prioritize my well-being, and focus on healing and growth for my kids. My parenting advice is to let your kids overhear you praising them. In addition to directly complimenting children, occasionally let them overhear you talking about their strengths to someone else. Hearing you speak positively about them [to others] builds confidence and reinforces good behavior in a powerful way.” ~Kristen Campbell of Normal Heights with kids Jordan (11), Kingston (4), Maximus (6) and Ryder (10)

Love Grows Here

exSEEDingly fun projects for families
Spring is a great time to be a kid! It’s rejuvenating to play outside, enjoying signs of new life and evidence left by April showers. Below are eight “exSEEDingly” fun springtime projects for the whole family that celebrate sustainability, gardening and being outdoors. The mosaic and seed paper would make lovely Mother’s Day gifts as well.
1
Plant an Egg Carton Garden
Fill a paper/cardboard egg carton with nutrient-rich potting soil and add seeds to each section. Keep the soil moist (but not overwatered) and place in a sunny spot. When the seeds have germinated, separate individual egg sections and plant directly into a garden or pots. The roots will not be disturbed and the carton will break down in the soil.
2Spread Seed Love
Purchase seed packets, small shovels and inexpensive gardening gloves and place one of each in a decorative bag. Add a cute note that says “I’m rooting for you,” “Sprout happiness” or “Give peas a chance” and leave them on porches of neighbors and
friends to spread the love. Other gift bag options include decorative pots, watering cans or small garden gnomes.
3Make Birdseed Cakes
Gather supplies: one envelope unflavored gelatin, ½ cup boiling water, ¾ cup flour, 4 cups wild bird feed and small molds or cookie cutters. Spray inside of the molds with nonstick cooking spray. Combine gelatin, water and flour in a bowl and mix to combine. Pour in bird feed and coat well. Add to molds or fill cutters on tray lined with wax paper. Create a hole at the top of each one using a straw before seed cakes set overnight. Remove from molds and hang from a tree.
4
Make Sustainable Seed Bombs
This easy recipe includes wildflower seeds, water and shredded newspaper. Soak newspaper shreds (or any recyclable, non-glossy paper shreds) in water until very soft and mix in seeds. Take seeded paper and roll into small balls (up to 2”). Optional: Insert popsicle sticks (to look like cake pops) that have seed identification or planting instructions written on them.
Let dry and pass out to friends to plant in their yards.
5
Plant a Window Herb Garden
Start an herb garden in a windowsill. Gather a variety of clean, recycled or canning glass jars and fill them with nutrient-rich soil. Add herb seeds such as basil, oregano, chives, dill, mint and thyme and water as directed on package. Clear glass jars allow kids to watch the seeds germinate and grow roots. Once the herbs have grown, cut and use in cooking at home.
6
Create a Mosaic
Use a simple coloring page outline or draw your own creative design on paper and glue it to a piece of cardboard. Gather a variety of dried beans and seeds and let the kids “color” in the design, using craft glue to adhere beans and seeds. It will be fun to see what everyone comes up with!
7
Make a Milk Jug Garden
Another way to start a garden is with a milk jug greenhouse. Rinse out an empty gallon milk jug (save the cap). Cut horizontally halfway down the jug,
only going ¾ of the way around so the jug has a hinged top. Fill the bottom with nutrient-rich soil and plant seeds. Talk to staff at your local gardening center to find out which seeds might work best. Close the top half of the jug and seal with tape. Leave in the sun, removing cap on warm days to let heat escape. Water as needed or put out on rainy days with the cap off.
8Make Plantable Seed Paper
Gather supplies: small herb or flower seeds, parchment paper and lightcolored (white and beige), non-glossy scrap paper such as junk mail, craft paper or copy paper. Shred paper and soak to soften. Put in an old blender
and cover with warm water (do not use a good blender that you use for food). Blend until it becomes pulp and pour into a large bowl. Add enough small seeds to evenly distribute and mix well. Strain out water and press into a lined cookie sheet. Roll out until thin and let air dry for at least a day. When dry, cut or tear to desired sizes. Adhere to cardstock and add a message, letting people know to plant the paper for a surprise. v

Mom Squad
Tips to finding mom friends
When we first moved to our house, I was pregnant and working full time. Although the neighborhood was filled with moms, I never had time for more than a hello wave. When my daughter was born, it was too cold to stroll outside for a chance meeting and I felt silly approaching doors unannounced. Once spring arrived, I tried to put myself out there, but responses were less than enthusiastic. I didn’t think making friends as an adult would be so difficult. Here is what I’ve learned about finding mom friends.
Make the first move. It may sound intimidating, but it is that easy. If you are enjoying small talk with a mom on the playground or sidelines of a game, exchange contact information. Suggest a stop for ice cream on the way home
to continue the conversation. If there is a connection, invite her for a playdate with the kids or out for a glass of wine.
Join social networking platforms. Facebook has a variety of mom groups specific to interests and neighborhoods. I found my current bunco group after reading someone’s post who wanted to start playing again. If you are looking for a running buddy, book club or your favorite TV series watch party, put yourself out there with a post asking if anyone else is interested in joining.
Meetup is another online way to find people in your area with common goals or passions, creating opportunities to gather with others who have shared interests.
Go where other moms go. Take the children to places or events like MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), Mommy and Me classes, story time at the library or swim lessons. Moms can be found on school committees and during afterschool activities. When you get there, introduce yourself and strike up a conversation. You never know who will be your next (or first) best friend.
Find groups of like-minded people through gyms, volunteer opportunities, themed events or churches. While it is nice to have friends who have children the same age, it is not a prerequisite for friendship. In fact, it’s not uncommon for child friends to grow apart while moms don’t, and that’s OK. It may be helpful to look for people who have
Pam Molnar
common interests like hiking, crafting, rock climbing or entrepreneurship. Moms with older children can be a great source of advice and support for the next stage of parenting.
Introduce yourself to neighbors. As it turns out, some of my best friends live in my neighborhood. Even if you have only had casual conversations with a few, consider hosting a driveway potluck or a game night. If your neighborhood has events like a bicycle parade on the Fourth of July or a Halloween block party, join the planning committee to get to know more people.
Be a “matchmaker” for friends. As you encounter or hear about other kids or moms who don’t know anyone in the area, be the one who connects people. Put together a playdate at the park for kids and moms who are new to the neighborhood, new to the school or just new to you, providing an opportunity for everyone to meet and make new friends.
Don’t give up. Like anything, finding or building a mom squad takes time and effort. Realize that not every new connection will become a friend, and know when it is time to move on. Once you have made a connection with someone, feed the relationship with opportunities to get together. Through time and experiences together, “your people” will emerge. v
Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mom of three. She is blessed with a tribe of mom friends that she couldn’t live without.

Butterfly Thumbprint Cookies
These adorable butterfly cookies are perfect for Mother’s Day, a garden party or a springtime treat any day! Kids have a blast helping because thumbprints and fingerprints are used to make the butterfly shape. Recipe developer and cookbook author Cathryn Wood of Adorable Animal Bakes always uses strawberry jam, but recommends choosing your favorite flavor.
Place the flour, butter and sugar in a large bowl. Use your fingers to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until a dough forms. This can take a few minutes. Then place it in the refrigerator to chill for at least one hour, or in the freezer for 30 mins.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking trays with parchment paper.
Roll the dough to 1/2-inch thick on a floured surface. Cut out 18 rounds. Push your thumb or finger into each cookie four times to create a butterfly shape. Carefully fill the shape with jam. Don’t overfill or the jam will spill out while cookies bake.
Place the cookies onto lined baking trays and freeze for 10 minutes. Bake for 10–12 mins. until edges turn golden brown. Cool completely at room temperature, then remove cookies from trays.
Pipe white icing to create butterfly bodies, antennae and spots. Let set at room temperature for 30 mins. before serving.
Makes
18 cookies
1 3/4 cups + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling the dough
