WE CALLED IT AMAZEMENT IN THE BASEMENT BECAUSE IT’S AMAZING AND IT’S IN THE BASEMENT.

Our biggest new exhibition in years offers a behind-the-scenes look at fascinating specimens from our collection and scientists at work in the new Paleo Center.

It’s part of another non-stop Summer of Wonder, with three films in our theater, Nat at Night on Fridays, rooftop views all weekend, and hands-on activities for the kiddos. Come visit—you’ll be amazed. Tickets at sdnat.org.

Tours, Summer Fun, and July 4 Celebrations

Have you ever experienced a behind-the-scenes tour in San Diego? These tours are not only enjoyable; they offer a wealth of insight about the attractions. For instance, when you talk with docents on the USS Midway, you learn firsthand about life aboard the aircraft carrier from those who served there. Double that knowledge by reserving your own guide to showcase even more interesting stories! Find info about behind-the-scenes tours on page 14. If you’ve taken a local tour we don’t have listed, we’d love to hear about it. Please send information to editor@sandiegofamily.com

Summer is all about fun! Play our awesome bingo game on page 20; challenge your family to achieve a blackout by completing all 25 activities. A printable pdf is available on our website if you’re looking at the digital edition; print it now to get started. Be sure to explore our water adventures guide on page 12. From surfing and water parks to splash pads and boat tours, there are perfect ways to cool off for all ages this summer!

We’ve reviewed a variety of fun summer toys, which you can find on page 18. There were several products featured in the June issue as well. Search “summer toys” at www.sandiegofamily.com to see them all.

The San Diego Family staff wishes all our readers and advertisers a joyful Fourth of July celebration! Enjoy local parades, fireworks and festivities (page 24) and take time to honor our nation’s independence. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 and signed weeks later by a committee that included prominent figures John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Remarkably, both men passed away on the same day, July 4, 1826, just hours apart. Celebrate July 4 with pride by wearing red, white and blue!

Trudy Chisholm of San Marcos with daughter Emerson (14 mos.) at Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad. It was Emerson’s first time splashing in the ocean!

Jace (11) and Dmitri (11) of Eastlake (Chula Vista) couldn’t resist running into the waves at Mission Beach after riding the Belmont Park roller coaster as many times as possible.

Soak Up Summer Fun spots to get wet and stay cool

Have you even experienced a San Diego summer if you haven’t dipped your toes in the ocean, gotten soaked at a local water park or at least embarked on an excursion across the bay? I think not. Below we share an abundance of opportunities to cool off in America’s Finest City and throughout the county. If getting wet isn’t your vibe, be sure to get out to enjoy ocean breezes and endless bay, lake and coastal views. Here are some of the best ways to soak up summer in San Diego!

WATER PARKS

Obviously, the largest “water park” you’ll find around here is the Pacific Ocean—31 beaches spanning 70 miles of coastline from Imperial Beach to Oceanside. Looking for something beyond a beach day? Plan an epic water play day at Legoland California’s Water Park in Carlsbad, Sesame Place in Chula Vista or Wave Waterpark in Vista. The recently opened Gaylord Pacific Resort in Chula Vista has a great water park for hotel guests (limited day passes available to those lucky to score them online). Grab a recreational session pass or family day pass for the Plunge San Diego (at Belmont Park) to enjoy the awesome inflatable obstacle course in their giant pool.

Insider tip: There are a number of local hotels and resorts that offer day use at their pools (some with water slides). Discover amenities at individual properties and reserve family passes at www.resortpass. com/s/us/ca/san-diego/hotel-daypasses. No overnight stay required.

WATERCRAFT RENTALS

Rent WaveRunners, kayaks, pontoon boats, pedal boats, stand up paddle boards and more to spend a fun afternoon at spots like Carlsbad Lagoon (Carlsbad), Oceanside Harbor (Oceanside) or Lake San Marcos (San Marcos). Visit each location’s website for watercraft availability and to make reservations.

The kids might love taking a spin around Santee Lakes (Lake 5) in a duck, swan or dragon pedal boat. Additional unique rentals include single or tandem HydroBikes at Aqua Adventures in Mission Bay and pink Duffy boats at Eco Boat Rentals in Point Loma.

SPLASH PADS

Yay! All Waterfront Park splash fountains along Harbor Dr. downtown are expected to be fully operational this month. Other notable splash pads include Sunset Park in San Marcos, Civita Park in Mission Valley, Del Mar Highlands Town Center in Del Mar and Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista. In addition to a splash pad and family swim opportunities, Poway Community Swim Center offers “splashtastic fun” from 4:30–7:30 pm on Inflatable Fridays through August 1.

If you’re planning a visit to SeaWorld this summer, be sure to take swimsuits and towels so the kids can play in SeaWorld Rescue Jr.’s splash zone (and sit in the soak zone at the Orca Encounter). Of course, you can visit the large, walk-in “people dryers” located near Shipwreck Rapids if you forget.

Learn more about San Diego splash pads in our article at www.sandiegofamily.com/things-to-do/ out-about/parks-with-water-splashpads-san-diego

BOAT TOURS

Take a relaxing sunset cruise aboard the Bahia Belle, a three-story sternwheeler on Mission Bay, which runs between Bahia Resort and Catamaran Resort. Spend the day in Coronado after taking the Coronado Ferry from Broadway Pier or San Diego Convention Center to the Ferry Landing. Explore San Diego Bay on a harbor sightseeing tour or dolphin adventure with City Cruises by Hornblower or on a high-speed Patriot Jet Boat with Flagship Cruises.

Exciting family memories await as you set sail on a historic tall ship, a high-speed Navy Swift Boat or take part in an interactive pirate adventure with Maritime Museum of San Diego.

SURF LESSONS

Summer break offers no better time to learn how to surf! Check out surf lessons for groms (kids)—and parents—at Surf Diva, Surf Education Academy, Everyday California, Pacific Surf School or Jamie O’Brien Surf Experience.

We’d love to know how your family decides to “soak up summer.”

Share your water adventures with us by posting on IG, tagging @ sandiegofamilymagazine and using #SDoutandabout. v

Take the Exit Kid-friendly stops on a California road trip

driven up and down the coast of California my whole life (mostly between San Diego and the Bay Area) and only got to know one small town for decades (Solvang, which I love!). I’ve recently been intrigued with the idea—or should we call it a mind shift—of “just take the exit.” We get so caught up in the destination and the fastest way to get from point A to point B, that we often forget to explore and enjoy the journey. If you’re taking a road trip through California this summer, make note of these fun places to stop with kids. Take the exit!

Avila Valley Barn in San Luis Obispo

There’s always something fun happening at Avila Valley Barn. Just half a mile off Hwy 101 (take the Avila Beach Dr. exit), this fun-filled stop is an excellent place to grab lunch, a treat or just stretch your legs, especially for families. Visit farm animals, indulge in an ice cream cone, shop for fresh produce and baked goods, get lunch at the Chicken Shack & Smoke House or take a hayride! There is no fee to visit with goats, pigs, miniature horses, sheep, alpaca, chickens and donkeys. www.avilavalleybarn.com

Take the Edgewood Rd. exit off I-280.

Filoli Gardens in Woodside

About 30 miles south of San Francisco is beautiful Filoli Gardens, where a special tribe of trolls is visiting until Nov. 10, 2025. Bay Area locals and visitors can get an exclusive look at six gigantic folklore-inspired trolls built from reclaimed wood by world-renowned recycling artist, Thomas Dambo. The “TROLLS: Save the Humans” outdoor exhibit inspires people to rediscover nature and take care of the world around them.

Each whimsical troll has a name, individual personality and specific “purpose” in teaching humans to be responsible stewards of the earth. Plan a visit to Filoli Gardens in Woodside to be thoroughly enchanted by Ronja Redeye (The Speaker Troll), Basse Buller (The Painting Troll), Rosa Solfinger (The Botanical Troll), Ibbi Pip (The Birdhouse Troll), Kamma Can (The Treasure Troll) and Sofus Lotus (The Listening Troll). These magical giants are designed to spark joy and be interactive (yes, it’s OK to climb on them) as visitors make their way through gorgeous redwood trees. Kids also love the new nature playspace with a twisty trail and fairy garden. www.filoli.org

Read more about what to do with kids in the San Francisco Bay Area at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/travel/bay-area-visit-5-fun-things-todo-with-kids.

Take the Holly St. exit off Hwy 101.

Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos

This awesome museum offers an engaging, interactive introduction to the world of flight. Learn about aviation pioneers, including the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman, Charles Lindbergh and many others. Get a close look at some of the fascinating “contraptions” and aircraft that early innovators successfully made airborne (and some not so successfully). Explore hands-on exhibits like the invention lab, flight simulators, a kidfriendly imagination play area, Parachute Launch Towers and how to make epic paper airplanes. Hiller Aviation Museum is located right next to the San Carlos Airport, so a bonus is watching airplanes take off and land from a viewing platform behind the museum. This outdoor area is where you’ll also find the nose section of a retired Boeing 747, where visitors can explore two stories via a spiral staircase and sit in the cockpit! It’s a fun and educational experience for aspiring young aviators and history enthusiasts of all ages. www.hiller.org

San Simeon

The Morro Bay/Hearst Castle exit (from Hwy 101) leads to an abundance of coastal views and fun discovery since you’ll be heading to scenic Highway 1 (aka Pacific Coast Highway). For now, we’ll focus on San Simeon. One of the most well-known sights (just beyond Cambria) is Hearst Castle. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it. If you have, I recommend going again and taking a different tour—it’s so fascinating! Also in San Simeon is Piedras Blancas Light Station, an historic landmark that can only be visited by taking a guided tour at 9:45 am (several days a week, depending on season); Tickets must be purchased online in advance. The docent-led tour includes a halfmile easy walking trail, access to the fog signal building and lower level of the lighthouse, time to explore on your own, and spectacular views of rugged shoreline and crashing waves that are unique due to the distance of the light station from the coast. The protected area is a wildlife sanctuary, so bring binoculars. Don’t miss free opportunities to view elephant seals, also nearby in San Simeon. v

Fruit Pizza with Sugar Cookie Crust

Fruit pizza is not a new concept, but check out this elevated version featuring sweetened orange cream for the “sauce” and a delicious citrus glaze. The crust is made with Ann Clark Sugar Cookie Mix and baked in a cast iron skillet, encouraging lightly browned, crispy edges with a chewy center. Mmmm. To save time, the crust and glaze can be made the day before assembly.

Customize this summertime treat with your favorite fresh fruit in season. Or, use only red and blue fruits and serve it at your Fourth of July celebration! Find the recipe and instructions at www.sandiegofamily.com/ things-to-do/dining-and-recipes. v

Recipe and photo provided by Laura Kanya, R&D Chef at Ann Clark Ltd., America’s largest manufacturer of cookie cutters and a trusted name in baking essentials.
