Keeping children safe is a universal priority requiring attention and a thoughtful plan, particularly during summer months when kids are out of school. Here are key strategies to fostering independence while creating a safe environment for children to explore and interact with others this summer.

Indoor and Outdoor Play

Outdoors: Reiterate essential safety rules frequently, such as play boundaries, looking both ways before crossing the street and wearing helmets while biking or skateboarding.

GPS devices are valuable tools for keeping kids safe and providing parents peace of mind. Andrea Quezada of Mira Mesa keeps close tabs on her daughter through the SyncUP Kids Smartwatch which syncs with an app that only parents can access. “We control all the settings and assure it’s safe for her,” says Quezada. “We are also able to set [physical] boundaries, and it will alert us if she leaves them.”

Many GPS devices come with additional features, such as emergency contacts and 911 calling capabilities. Some also include real-time tracking information to quickly locate children if they become lost.

“We started using Apple AirTags to keep the children safe when we visit places like the Zoo, SeaWorld or

Summer Safety: Preparation is Everything

Legoland,” says Melina Amaguin of Mira Mesa. If a child becomes lost, Amaguin’s rule is to stay put until found. “You can also ping a sound [to the Airtag] to remind your kids that it’s time to go or that you’re on the way to find them,” she says.

At home: If you haven’t already, make home a safe space for kids and visitors by childproofing areas that pose potential risks. Take your child’s individual needs and ages into consideration. Tips from Rady Children’s Hospital include:

• Anchor furniture, bookshelves and TVs to the wall

• Use stove knob covers and oven locks

• Empty water from bathtubs after each use

• Install window guards to prevent windows from opening more than 4”

• Secure safety gates at the top and bottom of every staircase

Emotional and Social Safety

Teach children about personal boundaries and consent from a young age. Explain that it’s OK to say “no” to uncomfortable interactions and touches. By proactively addressing potential risks and empowering kids with knowledge, parents can help them navigate the world with confidence. A combination of vigilance and open communication is key to their wellbeing.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s (SDCDA) Office encourages parents to explain the concept of “stranger”: “Instead of telling children not to talk to strangers, teach them to be alert for threatening behaviors and situations… Keep in mind that certain kinds of strangers can assist children when they need help. Tell your kids to look for mothers with children, other kids, police in uniform or store clerks if they need help.” Practice “what if” scenarios in a non-frightening way so safety skills become second nature.

SDCDA also emphasizes that there is no substitution for attention and supervision when it comes to child

Vulnerability is increased for children with mobility limitations, developmental disabilities or communication challenges. Read our article “Make Safety a Priority” in the 2025–2026 issue of Flourishing Families at www.specialneedsresourcefoundationofsandiego.com/program/flourishing-families to learn specific tips for families with special needs.

safety. More tips include 1) Never leave children unattended in public places or in a car, 2) Always be aware of surroundings, 3) Take kids into public restrooms with you, 4) Choose a secret word to use in an emergency. Read all their safety tips at www.sdcda.org/ content/preventing/protecting-childrenonline/child-safety-tips.pdf.

Emergency Preparedness

Having a plan for when a child gets lost significantly reduces stress and increases the chance of a quick reunion. Make sure children know their full name, your phone number, and home address so they can share it if needed. Summer is the perfect time to memorize these details.

Families who have children with special needs can enroll in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Take Me Home Registry free of charge. Visit  www.sdsheriff.gov/community/takeme-home-registry for information.

Water and Sun Safety

Pool and beach safety are crucial, especially during the summer months when water activities are in full swing. Enrolling children in swim lessons with certified instructors helps them build essential skills and confidence in the water, reducing the risk of accidents. Along with swimming skills, protecting kids from harmful sun exposure is key—apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and consider using sun-protective clothing. More tips to keep kids safe around water include:

• Secure pools. Use fences, alarms and covers to prevent unsupervised access.

• Designate a water watcher. Never leave children unattended around water, even for a moment. If you’re with a group or having a party and there is not a lifeguard on duty, make sure there is always a designated water watcher.

• Establish and follow pool rules Remind kids no running around a pool, no diving in shallow water and stay within sight of a trusted adult.

• Use Coast Guard-approved flotation devices or life jackets

• Keep hydrated and take breaks It’s important to prevent fatigue and overheating on warm days, even when swimming.

• Know CPR. Parents, caregivers and older kids: Find a local class and get certified!

Learn more about summer safety and San Diego beach regulations at www.sandiego.gov/leisure/ summersafety.

A Note About Online Safety

The most important ways to safeguard kids online are 1) Do not get them a phone with internet access until they’re teens; 2) Use parental controls, 3) Do not allow devices in bedrooms at night; 4) Stay involved and keep communication open—know what kids are doing online, 5) Teach kids not to share personal information, location or passwords, 6) Create a technology contract.

Kid-Friendly Coffee Shops

With kids home for summer, parent meet-ups offer adult conversation and a necessary change of scenery. Consider calling a friend to meet for a caffeine fix or mid-morning break with kids in tow. There are plenty of local coffee shops that welcome children, feature kid-friendly menu items, and are in close proximity to fun spots to spend a few hours. These family-friendly spots prove that great coffee and happy kids can coexist—even thrive—under the same roof (or patio cover). Here are 10 of our favorite cafés that are perfect for bringing kids along.

Blue Whale – La Jolla www.bluewhalesd.com

This casual café in the village of La Jolla serves coffee, tea, smoothies, lunch and dinner. Take advantage of their outdoor seating and enjoy a latte while little ones sip on an Acapulco acai smoothie. Just a 10-minute walk to the water, be sure to bring sand toys!

With a large, semi-enclosed outdoor patio, the adorable coffee trailer in South Park is a perfect spot to unwind with kids in tow. Daniel’s Coffee Cart – Balboa Park www.balboapark.org/attractions-experiences/ daniels-coffee-balboa-park

Don’t be fooled by the small size of this coffee cart located inside Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. They deliver big when it comes to quality and the location can’t be beat when hanging out with other parents and kids. Stop by before or after riding the carousel, mini train or visiting a museum. Grab a Mexican mocha and let the kids run around the colorful tiles inside the plaza. They’ll love cooling down with a delicious, blended peanut butter frapp.

Life as a Disney Actor

Former San Diego Family Cover Kid, Thom Nemer

We recently caught up with 12year old Thom Nemer, cover kid from the December 2019 issue of San Diego Family Magazine. Wow, has he been busy! After discovering acting through San Diego Junior Theatre at age 7, Thom has landed TV, film, commercial, print and theatrical roles. Most notably, Thom plays Alexander in the 2025 Disney+ movie “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip.”

While Thom’s life involves a certain amount of Hollywood glamour, he’s also just a regular, hard-working kid who attends public school in San Diego and expresses much gratitude to Disney for their support. Here’s what Thom had to share:

How did you get started with acting?

A talent scout from Tower Talent approached us and offered to take me in for a trial audition. We declined their offer initially. However, a year later, we unexpectedly bumped into them again. This time, I convinced my parents to let me participate.

What is your favorite thing about it?

I love acting because I get to pretend, be creative and play different characters. I meet lots of new people and get to know them during the process of filming. It’s really fun!

What’s it like being on a Disney show?

It’s an amazing experience to be a part of their community. I’ve always been a

fan of Disney shows and movies, and I never imagined that I would get to play such an iconic character and lead the show. It was a challenging journey filled with hard work, trust and dedication.

Can you describe a typical day of work?

I am picked up by a driver who takes me to the set. Once there, I get ready for makeup and wardrobe. I have a teacher on set who assists with my school studies. There’s a coach who works with me on my scenes for the day to help me memorize my lines and prepare for the scenes. It’s quite a juggling act.

Can you share the “inside scoop” on working with well-known actors? There were a ton of bloopers and takes where things went hilariously wrong! We were all having a great time, laughing, and even getting soaked in the flooded camper. Eva [Longoria] is incredibly funny, and her chemistry with Jesse [Garcia] is hilarious. I also had the pleasure of working with Cheech [Marin], who is my favorite Cars character [Ramone]. When I found out I would be working with him, I couldn’t believe it!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to continue acting and pursue more projects. However, I also have a

passion

Do you have tips for other kids who wish to pursue acting?  If you genuinely want to try something, don’t hesitate. Acting is a fun and

enjoyable activity that allows you to pretend in a creative way. Remember, with dedication and hard work, your dreams can come true. v

1.Leave a surprise note. Put a sticky note with a sweet or funny message onto Dad’s coffee mug, steering wheel or wallet. This two-minute effort can set the tone for his day.

2.Play his favorite tunes. Blast Dad’s favorite song or music genre and have a spontaneous family dance party. Better yet, create a playlist of his favorite music to play whenever he wants.

3.Snap a candid photo. Catch him doing something meaningful or “quintessential Dad”—such as playing with the kids, fixing something or relaxing. Send it to him with a sweet caption like, “Caught being awesome.”

4.Ask for his advice. Whether its cars, cooking or career moves, dads love to feel needed and valued.

5.Tackle a chore Dad hates. Take a dreaded task off his plate without a word.

6.Frame a drawing or note. Put a child’s doodle or a heartfelt note in a frame where he’ll see it every day.

Love for Dads 18 simple ways to make him feel special

Father’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate all that dads do, but why limit it to just one day? With a little creativity and a few minutes, you can help Dad feel appreciated year-round. Here’s a list of ways to bring Father’s Day magic into any day.

7.Go on a mini outing. Suggest a spontaneous walk around the neighborhood, ice cream run or shoot some baskets at the park.

8.Say thank you for something that is often overlooked, such as fixing the porch light, picking up milk or filling the car with gas.

9.Laugh at his jokes. Even eyerolling groaners deserve a chuckle (or dramatic laugh) every now and then.

10.Give a 60-second massage. Give Dad a quick shoulder squeeze to let him know you care.

11.Make his coffee or tea. Sneak into the kitchen first to prepare Dad’s favorite morning drink, exactly how he likes it.

12.Host a five-minute “Dad toast.” Raise your glasses at dinner for a goofy or heartfelt toast to Dad’s awesomeness.

13.Send a throwback photo. Text Dad an old favorite photo with a simple, “Thank you for this memory.”

14.Stock up on his favorite snack. Keep a stash of Dad’s favorite snacks ready to surprise him occasionally.

15.Give him first pick. Whether it’s the first slice of cake, the comfiest seat or the breakfast restaurant, let him have the first pick from time to time.

16.Declare “Dad’s choice” hour. Choose a random timeframe where he picks the TV show, music, family activity or dessert.

17.Set a timer for Dad time. Each family member gets five minutes of focused “Dad time” to ask questions, share a funny story or just connect.

18.Give Dad a shout-out. Casually highlight something nice he did—whether it’s cooking dinner or holding the door open for a stranger.

Celebrating Dad doesn’t require a special occasion. Recognizing everyday moments often means the most. A little effort and care help make any day feel like Father’s Day. v Rebecca Hastings is a freelance writer.
