hen we think about summer at the beach, it usually stirs thoughts of fishing boats on the horizon, the splash of water and children’s laughter in a sparkling pool, the faint cry of a seagull as it flies overhead and the tranquil sounds of waves washing onto bright white sand. We are accustomed to enjoying everything that nature and the beautiful Florida coastline has to offer to those who live here and those who visit. When we are caught up in the bliss and beauty of the Gulf Coast, it’s easy to take for granted what happens behind the scenes to make this area the paradise that we all love and enjoy. SRE wants to take this time to recognize and acknowledge the herculean efforts of our local residents who work the front lines of the restaurants that serve our favorite dishes, the recreation and amenities that provide us places to play, the retail stores and boutiques that we spend hours in browsing to find that perfect item, and the resorts and hotels that work tirelessly to ensure you have a soft, fresh pillow to lay your head on and dream of tomorrow’s fun and adventure. If the past few months have taught us anything, it’s that nothing in our day-today lives can be taken for granted. We are not guaranteed a tomorrow that will be the same as our yesterday. S

andestin Golf and Beach Resort is poised to usher in a new era of hospitality when the much-anticipated Hotel Effie opens its doors to travelers later this year. Located on the north side of the 2,400-acre resort, the elegant 250-room hotel sits between the Gulf of Mexico’s sugar-white beaches and the verdant shores of Choctawhatchee Bay. Hotel Effie, which physically connects to the busy and popular Baytowne Conference Center, is the only full-service hotel owned by Sandestin Investments, LLC. “Sandestin has never had an offering like this. Effie brings charm, personality and a new luxury experience to Florida’s Emerald Coast,” said Sara Becnel, vice president of development at the resort. Hotel Effie is one of only two major projects to be built at Sandestin since the Welcome Center was completed in 2012. The other was Osprey Point, a neighborhood of luxury condominiums that opened in the summer of 2020. In development since 2016, Hotel Effie officially broke ground two years later. The property’s namesake is Effie Burns, the grandmother of Sandestin owner and developer Tom Becnel. “She was considered to be the ultimate hostess — there was always an open rocking chair next to her on the porch, and she always had a hot meal ready to serve,” Sara said. “It felt like the right fit to name the hotel after her as she has so many qualities we still emulate today. From the genuine smiles, open doors and friendly greetings, Southern hospitality is at the core of the hotel’s welcoming and helpful service style.”

“As owners, we have a hands-on approach and a passion for Sandestin, and Hotel Effie is no exception,” she said. “Our aim is to create experiences here that become part of the rich fabric of this amazing community. As we take our image to the next level, we will continue to adapt to our guests’ needs and offer the exceptional experiences they expect.” Working closely with Atlanta-based interior design firm Design Continuum Inc., Sara helped with selecting and approving every detail in the hotel, from flooring and fixtures to upholstery and paint colors. She could be found in her hard hat on the job site almost daily, taking great care to infuse equal amounts of comfort SANDESTIN LIVING

and luxury into every aspect of a guest’s stay. Throughout the hotel, guests will find luxury textiles, natural wood grains, quartzite and sparkling minerals all bathed in natural light. Hotel Effie’s coastal-contemporary guestrooms are appointed with luxury bedding and overstuffed pillows, all in soothing color palettes. Some in-room details — such as floor-length mirrors, lighted bathroom mirrors and an extra large vanity — were specifically designed with female travelers in mind, and a variety of vanity areas accommodate makeup application, hairstyling, in-room spa services and personal care.

All of these designs, Sara says, were created to make every room feel like home. “From start to finish, everything is built around thoughtful design,” she says. “We have thought through every detail to make sure that every visit to Hotel Effie is an experience where visitors never have a worry and are surrounded by comfort at every turn.” The hotel will also commit to a greater level of environmental responsibility with sustainable, bulk amenities by Lather in the guest rooms. Instead of single-use plastic water bottles, each floor will have a hydration station, and a carafe will be located in each room for guest use. Use it to relax after a full day, or fill up your own bottle and take it with you to the beach or around the resort. Other next-level amenities at Hotel Effie include a fitness center that includes Peloton bikes, TRX, Life Fitness machines, kettlebells and other equipment to meet the needs of the health-conscious traveler. For those

seeking a lighter load, there are also free weights and yoga mats. “The fitness center is open to everyone,” Sara says. “From hardcore workouts to light yoga, all are welcome.” At Spa Lilliana, hotel guests will find a place to rejuvenate and relax. It will feature 10 treatment rooms, one couples’ room, four flexible rooms that can be combined to make two additional couples’ rooms and a coed relaxation lounge with private men’s and women’s relaxation lounges inside the locker rooms. These coed spaces are designed to allow guests and couples to mingle before their treatments or relax between spa experiences. Drawing inspiration from the local area, treatments will blend quartz and saltwater, offering wellness and healing options in addition to a regular spa menu. For those needing on-the-go service, in-room spa treatments are also available.

CULINARY ADVENTURE

All of Hotel Effie’s food and beverage offerings will be curated by chef Acheson, a James Beard Award-winner whose skills are sure to heighten the travel experience for hotel guests of all ages and backgrounds. The hotel’s main restaurant, Ovide, which is named for Effie’s husband, will serve food reflecting the local flavors of the Gulf Coast presented with French cooking techniques. To start your day, there’s the grab-and-go coffee market, Sweetbay Coffee, which will brew an array of coffee and tea blends and serve quick breakfasts and light bites. WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS NOTHING LASTS like a picture, and the new Hotel Effie will help cater to all those with a penchant for photo albums. In the lobby, a beautiful life-size mural of Effie Burns, the hotel’s namesake and the grandmother of Sandestin owner and developer Tom Becnel, will greet guests

as they arrive. Created by local South Walton artist Bryan Hand, the mural will sit adjacent to rocking chairs where guests can pose alongside for a quick photo. Sara Becnel, vice president of development at the resort, said the mural drew inspiration from President Obama’s presidential portrait, which depicted him seated

among a field of ivy. This will just be one of the many “Instagrammable” spots in the hotel to help guests capture lifelong memories of their visit, Sara says. “We really want guests to make memories here and to feel relaxed during their entire stay,” said Sara Becnel, vice president of development at the resort.

Other perfect spots for a shot will be the rooftop bar sunsets and the nearby custom graffiti mural that will adorn one of the walls of the bar. Then there are the hotel rooms themselves, which will offer great views of the bay and the beach. Said Becnel: “There’s not a bad view in the entire hotel.”

SARA BECNEL BEYOND THE BOARDROOM

Another sector where Hotel Effie is poised to be in high demand is business travel, and it is scheduled to open to groups and meetings in October. “It’s well suited for all types of events from small, intimate board events to national sales meetings,” said Andrew Lott, executive director of resort sales at Sandestin. “For meeting planners, the ability to book venues able to hold up to 1,200 people in such a beautiful location will definitely place Hotel Effie and the resort at the forefront.” The busiest of travelers will find smart solutions throughout the hotel, starting with state-of-the-art meeting facilities, creative catering concepts and the latest conference technology. Beautiful touches such as unique fixtures and custom carpets add a tasteful backdrop to events. In all, Hotel Effie offers 20,000 square feet of extraordinary meeting space, including the Juniper Ballroom, a 13,000 square-foot ballroom that boasts a 25-foot high ceiling. “We really feel like this is going to bring a different type of traveler to Sandestin,” said Sara. Combining the hotel’s meeting space with Baytowne Conference Center’s 30,000 square feet allows the resort to host multiple groups and meetings simultaneously. A breezeway that connects the two centers means larger groups can utilize both locations in tandem. The Baytowne Conference Center also recently underwent interior renovations to match the furnishings and finishes inside Hotel Effie to create a more integrated meeting experience. That connection between Baytowne Conference Center and Hotel Effie is expanding the resort’s meetings reach and allowing it to host much larger groups. “We are currently working with both corporate groups and larger national associations in segments that range from insurance to pharmaceutical to the energy fields,” Andrew said. “Other events in the works include incentive groups where planners want to reward their people with a truly one-of-a-kind experience at a brand new, luxury boutique hotel in our beautiful resort setting.”

Q How long have you been an owner/operator of Sandestin, and what makes this resort so special to you and your family? A My family purchased the resort in 2010, and I started working here in 2012. This resort is so special to us because it is our home; we don’t just work here, we live and play here too. Q When you are not working, what is your favorite thing to do? A I love taking advantage of all the resort has to offer! I can be found riding my bike on the extensive biking trails, walking my two puppies — Justice and Joyful — every night, and hanging out at the beach or Beach Club. I love to shop at the stores in Baytowne, especially Barefoot Princess and Coconut Kidz for all my nieces and nephews, and I dine at my favorite spots, like the Burnt Pine Club salad bar for lunch or Slick Lips. When I am not enjoying this paradise that I call home, I am usually traveling to other amazing spots around the globe. I have been to Portugal, L.A., San Diego, Taos, Zion, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and more in the last year! Q During your time with Sandestin, is there a particular moment that stands out for you or a particular project that is close to your heart? A There have been so many, but I do feel the one that is closest to my heart is Hotel Effie. That project has truly been a labor of love for me, from start to finish. I am so excited to see the vision in my mind turn into reality! Q Can you share your most memorable Sandestin experience? A One of my favorite moments every year is the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic tournament. I absolutely love the vibrancy down at the docks during the weigh-ins and getting to run into my friends and see all the big fish being brought in. Q If there was one thing that you wish everyone knew about Sandestin, what would it be? A How diverse the resort really is. We have everything from quaint cottages to expansive bay-front homes to luxury condos, and now we are adding a full service hotel, Effie, to the mix! There’s something for everyone — every taste, fitness level, beach lovers, adventure seekers, foodies, shopaholics and so on.

While the culinary crown jewel of Hotel Effie will be the signature restaurant Ovide, chef Acheson will also be crafting the offerings at the hotel’s other options: Sweetbay Coffee, The Lobby Bar, Ara Rooftop Pool & Lounge and the hotel’s own in-room dining service. The highlight for any stay will undoubtedly be Ovide, which will be serving classic Gulf Coast fare with a French flare. “I think that the seafood will be the star overall,” chef Acheson says. “It is hard not to adore Gulf seafood. … I love the idea of cooking the food that people love and feel comfortable with — just doing it better than most chefs do. Fully embracing technical simplicity is a beautiful thing.” But Ovide is just one of the tasty options that Hotel Effie offers.

Hotel Effie’s signature restaurant is Ovide. Offering a menu created by celebrity chef Hugh Acheson, the cuisine at Ovide shows his love of Southern Gulf fare, his impeccable classic French technique and a bold creativity that has been the hallmark of his career. Each dish bears representation of the standard of excellence that the Hotel Effie commands, heightened with a passion for sustainability and seasonality that gives each bite incredible flavor unlike anything else you’ve ever tasted. And while most people can only wonder at what the genius behind the dish is like, we had the distinct honor of getting to know Chef Hugh just a little bit better …

Sandestin Living: Where are you originally from? Chef Hugh Acheson: I’m from Ottawa, Canada, but have lived in the Southern U.S. since I was 25.

couple of great Italian spots in Montreal, a youth hostel in Banff (Alberta), an Austrian cafe in Ottawa and some others. When I got married and moved down South, I cooked in Athens at the Last Resort and then moved to San Francisco to work at a restaurant called Mecca. Then I was an opening sous chef at Gary Danko. SDL: What brought you to Sandestin? HA: I love the beach and adore the area. I have been working with Highgate Hotel company for the last few years to create some restaurants and jumped at the opportunity to work with the Sandestin team for the Hotel Effie project. SDL: What would you say is your style, and how did that style come about? HA: I am trained in fine French food but love weaving in the foodways of the American South into my food. For this project, we will be placing a natural emphasis on Gulf seafood and local farms.

SDL: What will you be offering at Ovide? HA: We’re still in development, but four main courses that we are thinking through include roasted grouper with Anson Mills farro verde and pickled satsuma gremolata in a vermouth butter; grilled mahi mahi served with summer panzanella salad in a soy vinaigrette and gingered bok choy; gulf bouillabaisse with shrimp, grouper, snapper, and clams in a saffron broth finished with rouille and accompanied by crisp bread; and smoked duck breast with dirty wheatberries, celery leaves in a meyer lemon conserva with madeira jus. SDL: What’s your personal favorite thing to eat and cook? HA: Perfectly roasted chicken with gravy and rice. SDL: Who are some of the chefs you admire most in your career? HA: Frank Stitt, from Birmingham, Alabama;

Jessica Koslow, from Los Angeles; Traci des Jardins, from San Francisco; and Eric Ripert, New York City. SDL: When did you know you’d made it as a chef? HA: I knew that I’d really made it when I learned that people respected what I had to say and wanted to be led by me. SDL: What was the hardest thing to master? HA: I don’t know that I ever mastered anything. I view cooking as a constant learning experience. SDL: What makes you a passionate chef? HA: Cooking, beverage and hospitality are neverending topics that I can learn about every day of my life. I am blessed with a job that makes me eager to learn every day. SDL: What is the most satisfying thing about the work that you do? HA: Believing that you can make it better every single day.

Mardi Gras Parade and Baytowne Mardi Street Pardi Laissez les bon temps rouler — let the good times roll! The Village streets were filled with costumed dogs, unique colorful floats and golf carts to celebrate the end of carnival season at the Mardi Gras Parade. Mardi Gras music filled the air as onlookers were showered with a barrage of beads, moon pies and other trinkets from parade participants and their four-legged friends. The excitement continued on Fat Tuesday with the Baytowne Mardi Street Pardi. Village goers were treated to a Village Street party complete with live music from Boukou Groove, entertainers and performances by Aerial Events, a special Hydroflight show, face painting and more.

31st Annual Sandestin Gumbo Festival The Sandestin Gumbo Festival is one of the largest and most popular winter food events along Florida’s Emerald Coast. The weekend kicked off Friday, Feb. 14 with a delicious Seafood Boil. The festival then rolled into Saturday with the main event from featuring live music from Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe, family activities and the best gumbo cook-off on the Gulf Coast. DESTIN • SANDESTIN • SOUTH WALTON • 30A Overall inventory for the area spanning the Destin Bridge to Point Washington has fallen considerably in 2020 — down 11% from 2019 with a 15% reduction in new listing coming onto the market. Notable exceptions were in the increase in availability of condominiums and townhomes in the East 30A area. The overall number of sales is down 10% from those of 2019 but only a slight (1%) decrease in total dollar volume. Showing the greatest increase in sales volume overall was vacant land in Miramar Beach/Sandestin and North Santa Rosa Beach. Despite the decrease in available inventory, this area of beaches, golf courses and picturesque communities continues to celebrate an overall 7% increase in median sale price in 2020.
