edding in Bliss TWO COUPLES RECALL HOW SANDESTIN HELPED MAKE THEIR BIG DAY THE BEST DAY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

Country music is full of love and heartache; but when Kimberly Erb met Lloyd Black at Tootsies on Panama City Beach, the theme of their honky-tonk song would have been nothing but love. Just over a year of dating later, the pair went on a cruise that would be just the beginning of their journey to forever. “Lloyd proposed to me while we were at a stop in Honduras because he grew up there going on mission trips. Of all the locations we had gone, he chose to ask me there because of the special value it has in his heart,” Kimberly says. With a beachside meeting and a beach proposal, it was only fitting that the couple be married at the beach, and Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort proved to be the ideal choice. On June 27, 2020, Kimberly walked down the aisle wearing an ivory lace mermaid style gown to meet her groom. “We chose to have the wedding at Sandestin because, with it being a destination wedding, I wanted everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy a vacation all within the same facility,” says Kimberly, who works as a labor and delivery nurse. “Sandestin provides so many venue options, which was amazing. We chose the Links Lawn because we wanted to have the water in the background for our ceremony, and the Bayside Ballroom was perfect for the reception. “Our coordinator, Jennifer Hankins, allowed us to have our dream wedding. Everything was so easy, even during COVID-19. I barely had any stress because she handled everything with ease and grace. She constantly kept in contact with me from beginning to end, and we still keep in contact to this day. She’s someone I now can call a forever friend because of the bond we developed over the time of planning the wedding. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect wedding day — all provided by Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort.”

Though a Valentine’s Day meeting in college didn’t bring love at first sight, it was the first step of many that would eventually draw Ashley Shipley and Billy Ruffier together as a couple — and even distance couldn’t keep their hearts apart. After a year and a half of long-distance dating after graduation from the University of Florida, Ashley joined Billy where he was living in Hawaii. Then, it was only a matter of time before the two knew that they wanted to spend their lives together. “I’d just gotten back from catching the bouquet at one of my best friends’ weddings in St. Augustine, Florida, and my birthday was coming up a few days later. I kept telling Billy that I wanted him to plan something special for my first Hawaiian birthday, and, boy, was it special.” Ashley recalls of the day in May of 2018. “We set off for a walk on the beach before a nice dinner, and as we were walking, we ran into a Hawaiian monk seal. Billy told me to keep looking at the seal and not turn around until he said. When

I did, he had written ‘Marry Me?’ in the sand and was down on one knee!” Nearly two years later on Feb. 1, 2020, Kimberly wore a sheath-style crepe gown with lace detailing as she walked down the aisle at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort to meet Billy at the altar. “My parents have been living in the Destin area since 2011, and I’d travel there often when I lived in Gainesville. With most of our guests being from out of town, we loved the idea of Sandestin being a destination that they wouldn’t necessarily need a car for different events — it was all right there. Once Billy saw The Grand with the surrounding trees and the tall columns, it felt like old Florida, and we knew it was the right place,” says Ashley, who now lives in Missouri with her new husband. “Our coordinator, Jennifer, was very quick to respond to my endless questions via email or text; and the team worked well with my planner, Kristi at Kiss the Bride, which made things so much easier. When there was a problem, they fixed it quickly behind the scenes.”

O

n a sultry summer weekend in August of 1982, The Beach Boys — the iconic carefree ’60s boy rock band — drew more than 6,000 music lovers to an outdoor beach party in Miramar Beach that put Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort “on the map.” Ask a local, and many will say, “I was there.” That includes music lover Emily Ellis of Inlet Beach, who still has the sunny yellow concert tour T-shirt. Visitors also came, including Jay Seltzer of Nashville, who still has the ticket stub to prove it. In the spring of ’86, to entertain meeting attendees from the Louisiana Bar, Sandestin hosted a wine tasting event. Organizers humbly contend the only reason people came was thanks to spring rain showers that drove them off the beach. After a one-year hiatus due to the coronavirus, this spring will usher in the 34th annual Sandestin Wine Festival.

Today, a talented team of four Baytowne Wharf Neighborhood Association employees, led by events manager Leighann Elliott, hustle yearround to entertain the homeowners, locals and visitors that reside in and flock to Northwest Florida’s largest resort by staging upwards of 175 familyfriendly daily, weekly and annual events — all year long. Elliott, 25, who holds a hospitality management degree from the University of Auburn, began working at the resort in July 2017 as an events coordinator. Her talent earned her a promotion to manager the following summer. Elliott loves what she does. “It’s super rewarding to oversee the events from start to finish and to get to work with vendors, distributors and volunteers — it’s a lot of fun,” Elliott says.

Events are held on the beach, at the Marina at Baytowne Wharf, on the Grand Lawn of the Grand Sandestin, Bayside Inn pool deck, even on Jolee Island, but all the annual signature events — Sandestin Gumbo Festival, Sandestin Wine Festival, Baytowne Beer Fest and Sparkling Wine & Holiday Lights — are held in the heart of the resort: The Village of Baytowne Wharf. “The Village is a very special area. It’s a one-stop shop. You can eat, shop and there are activities for everyone — from nightlife to zip-lining, so we want to bring people here to enjoy all it has to offer” Elliott says. Teamwork makes the dream work. And though Elliott takes the lead as the events manager, START YOUR she is quick to share credit week off right with her unflagging fourwith one of member team: Alan Meyers, our amazing the executive director Hydro Flight of the Baytowne Wharf shows. Neighborhood Association; accountant David Syko and operations manager Troy Sjostrom. “For our signature events, it’s all hands on deck,” Elliott says. “We also have dedicated volunteers and great nonprofits who help us.” Volunteers from organizations such as the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center and Fisher House of the Emerald Coast help by manning the major events and, in turn, receive proceeds from the events. The resort’s own charity, Sandestin Foundation for Kids also is a beneficiary. In 2019, events raised $55,600 for local charities. “I’m not sure people realize that every penny we make, we donate. It’s not about making money, it’s about giving back,” Elliott assures.

Making It Happen

WEEKLY FIREWORKS displays help keep things popping at Baytowne.

Though the event team works on events all year long. The magic for producing major signature events begins about six months before gates open. And it starts with … a list. “I have big 5-inch event binders with tabs for volunteers, distributors, vendors, entertainment,” Elliott says. “We start with our volunteers, so we have enough time to figure out how many we need and reach out to them through our charity partners.” Once volunteers are set, Elliott ticks down her long list to secure vendors and entertainers. About three to five months out, tickets are released for sale. Then it’s back to the list to be sure tents, linen and glasses are ordered. Working with Sandestin retail merchants, Elliott coordinates the T-shirt and logo design each year and hands it off to Sandestin retail team which manages the sale of branded merchandise in the retail sales tent for the Sandestin Wine Festival, Sandestin Gumbo Fest and Baytowne Beer Fest. The week of an event, Elliott sits down with the rest of the team to review a detailed timeline of responsibilities color-coded by person. Once the gates are opened, the events team utilizes walkie-talkies to stay in touch, and Elliott consults her clipboard clenching the final timeline list. “I do as much as I can ahead of time and I study

my timeline, but the minute I walk out, 10 different things may happen. Having flexibility and being able to communicate expectations is important,” she says. At the close of an event, after “a big cheer,” Elliott gathers the team to recap what happened. “It’s a constant to always be thinking of things, organizing things to improve each year,” she says. “We have it down to a pretty good science, but we’re always adjusting — and have a lot of fun, too.”

Warm Up with These Seasonal Events It’s easy to get creative in the fall. The beloved Baytowne Art Walk held over Labor Day Weekend brings the talents of dozens of visual and live performing artists to the Village each from 5 to 10 p.m. Though the annual signature events are beloved, Elliott is always eager to keep the event roster fresh. In 2018 she unveiled a new event called Tribute Weekend. Slated for November 6–8, this three-day weekend event will showcase one “tribute band” each night. “We hope this will be a great way to get locals and homeowners out into the Village to enjoy some live music and kick up their heels,” Elliott says. Apparently, Elsa isn’t the only one with a magic touch when it comes to frozen favorites. Building on the popularity Baytowne on Ice, which crystalizes part of the Events Plaza into an ice rink from October to February, for the past three years Elliott has recreated a Winter Wonderland. “We bring in real snow to the Village. There’s an ice slide on a Saturday, and we’ll keep expanding on it in future years,” Elliott says. To chase away the cold winter blues in the heart of winter, Sandestin brews a perfect concoction in the annual Sandestin Gumbo Festival. Planned for Feb. 19–20, it is sure to heat things up.

It makes you feel grateful to be an American.” — Jan Wallace “I really like the Gumbo cook-off, because I get to work with all of the awesome local restaurants who compete with their recipes. They’re all there serving it, it’s a really awesome local communityinvolved event,” Elliott says. And this year promises an extra spicy splash. “We added a Bloody Mary component competition, sponsored by Bombora Vodka, that was a huge hit, and so we’ve continued it. There are so many great festivals in the area that are foodoriented or beverage-oriented, so I thought it would be a good idea to combine them together — now we have a New Orleansstyle brunch festival.” Why should people gather at The Village of Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin? “It’s a guaranteed good time,” Elliott says. “You’re with your friends, you can enjoy drinks, food and music. We give them that year after year.”

A Festive Haven for the Wallace Family Jan and James Wallace bought a three-bedroom vacation home in Sandpiper Village on the bay side of the resort in the late ’70s. About 15 years ago, when they lost their home in Gadsden, Alabama, to a fire, they made a life change and retired to a single-

family ranch-style home in the Deerwood neighborhood. Though Jan says they have been fortunate to travel and sail the globe, they never tire of “coming home to through the gates to beautiful Sandestin.” The 70-somethings love to scoot around the resort on their handy golf cart. They catch the sunset, zip to events and sometimes even ride their golf cart in them. “We love the festive parades for St. Pat’s Day, Mardi Gras and the Fourth of July — that holiday is our all-time favorite and seeing the fireworks is a family tradition,” says Jan. “It makes you feel grateful to be an American.” The Wallaces take full advantage of the family-friendly nature of the resort’s events. “It’s hard to name just one favorite event. We love taking the grandkids to see the mammoth fish hauled in from the boats for the (Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic) fishing tournament,” she says. That the resort is walkable and has such a range of things to do has added to the Wallace’s quality of life. “When you live here,” she says, “you can walk the resort and really appreciate the grounds. The beauty here is astronomical, it’s a lively place; and for us, it has been an extremely positive place to call home.”

T

he Sandestin Foundation for Kids launched in 2011 as a vehicle to provide financial assistance to children and families facing dire circumstances. The Foundation’s goal is to deliver support quickly to children, families and organizations — when it is needed most. “The Sandestin Foundation for Kids was founded because we wanted to create an organization where we could give back to our community, and give people vacationing, homeowners, and the community at Sandestin the opportunity to give back as well,” said Sara Becnel, co-trustee for the Foundation. Whether it is providing support for individuals and families or offering assistance to organizations working to provide a better environment for their children, the Sandestin Foundation for Kids continues to make a difference. Another avenue where the Foundation supports the community is through its relationship with the Baytowne Wharf Neighborhood Association. Every year the Foundation partners with the BWNA on three events — the Sandestin Gumbo Festival, the Sandestin Wine Festival and the Baytowne Beer Fest — and proceeds from each event help the Foundation’s efforts to aid kids and their families.

“Baytowne Wharf Neighborhood Association remains committed to supporting our local community and strives to increase the donations from year to year,” says Leighann Elliott, events manager at The Village of Baytowne Wharf. “The support of our community and the volunteerism are crucial to our events, and we couldn’t do it without our wonderful volunteers. We hope to always benefit our local nonprofits and continue our relationship with SDFK for years to come.” Volunteers for these three events are made up of SDFK volunteers and Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort employees. The number of volunteers can vary from 25 to over 100,

and they aid on a number of important duties behind the scenes. Duties can range from dining setup, ticket sales, assisting contest judges and handing out yoga mats to pouring brews, helping out in food tents and cleaning up after each day’s festivities. Volunteer shifts can last anywhere from 6 to 10 hours at these popular events. “We are so thankful for the opportunity to be able to give back to our community with these fantastic events,” said Becnel. “All proceeds help make meaningful and positive impacts to the lives of local children and children in need abroad. We are so grateful for the support of the community that allows us to make this happen.”

18th Annual Blue Marlin Classic The Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic (ECBC) is one of the most anticipated events on the Gulf of Mexico big-game fishing circuit, and this year we welcomed over 70 boats to compete for the multi-million dollar purse. The event kicked off on Wednesday, June 17 with the Golf Scramble at The Links Golf Club and Captain’s Meeting at Baytowne Marina. By the time Thursday morning rolled around, crews on each sport fishing yacht were preparing to jet off to three days of fishing. Blue marlin is the main focus, and each fish must be at least 110 inches long to qualify and are usually 500 pounds or heavier. In addition to the blue marlin weight category, smaller blues, white marlin, sailfish and spearfish that are successfully released earn points in the competitive release division. The Mollie, a Destin-based G&S custom sport-fisher, claimed the top prize ($514,933) with their 660.4-pound Blue Marlin. Photos by Max Impact Photography

TODD HANSON Director of Tennis 1. How long have you worked at Sandestin, and what makes this resort so special to you and your family? I’ve worked here for 17 years. I grew up here in Niceville, and shortly after college, I moved back to the area to begin searching for jobs. I took a part-time job teaching lessons and court maintenance but ended up working full time as business started to grow very rapidly.

2. When you are not working, what is your favorite thing to do? When I’m not working, I like to play guitar or participate in any type of outdoor sports. I love to bowl too, and I’m on a local bowling league.

3. During your time with Sandestin, is there a particular moment that stands out for you? The moment that stands out the most to me was when our facility was overbooked by group packages just a few years after I was full time. We had way more people than could fit on all our courts, and we had to constantly rotate people between clinics and round robins all weekend. Many of us ended

up teaching 10 straight hours without any breaks on Friday and Saturday just to accommodate everyone.

4. Can you share your most memorable Sandestin experience? As far as going above and beyond for our guests and members, I would definitely have to say our entire staff due to the pandemic most recently. While most businesses shut down for a short period of time, we stayed open to meet the demand for outdoor activities.

5. If there was one thing that you wish everyone knew about Sandestin, what would it be? Just the amount of dedication our employees give each and every day. There are so many employees that are recognized each month for outstanding work or customer experience that many people outside of Sandestin would never hear about.

6. What do you think is the most amazing stat for Sandestin Tennis? Last year, we had the most participation in our morning adult drill clinics than ever before, just shy of 2,700 participants!

DESTIN • SANDESTIN • SOUTH WALTON • 30A Overall inventory for the area spanning the Destin Bridge to Point Washington has made an amazing recovery from April this year — at that time, inventory was down 11% from the same time the previous year compared to September’s inventory, up 1% from STLY. New listings coming onto the market are up 3% over 2019 (as opposed to 15% down in April of this year). Vacant land availability continues to fall year over year while residential property is up slightly. The most notable success of 2020 so far is the across-the-board rise in median sales price, apart from condominiums and vacant land in the 30A East area and condominiums in Destin. Overall median sales price is up 18% over last year, number of sales is up 19% and sales volume is up an impressive 48%.
