Former Hindu temple official pleads guilty

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA – The New York Film Academy has offered $10,000 reward for clues leading to arrest of the culprits behind the mysterious death of an Indian American in California. Authorities said 18-year-old Rishi Chaubal-Menon was struck and killed shortly after midnight on October 31, 2015. Menon’s body was found in the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Vineland Street, Investigators did not find any broken glass or pieces of the car at the crime scene. They said they do not know why Menon was on the freeway. Last week, authorities asked for the public’s help to solve the crime. “…We have exhausted all of the leads we have and that’s why we’re pleading with the public now to please help us with this,”

Man jailed for 15 yrs for helping ISIS fighters BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- A New Jersey man who tried to help organize a ‘small army’ of ISIS fighters in the Garden State and New York was sentenced to 15 years behind bars on May 10. Alaa Saadeh was part of a group of men who were trying to support the ISIS terror group, prosecutors said. Saadeh admitted he gave money and credit cards to other members of the group to try to help them travel to Syria. He and others in the group watched ISIS propaganda including beheadings and other killings by the terror group. His brother, Nader

Saadeh, was among the group charged in the scheme. Saadeh pleaded guilty in October to conspiring to provide material support to ISIS in Newark federal court before Judge Sarah Wigenton. In addition to the 15-year sentence, Judge Susan Wife imposed lifetime supervised release for Saadeh when he completes his sentence. Officials have said the parents of Alaa and Nader Saadeh were deported more than a decade ago in connection with an alleged credit card fraud case. The Saadeh children were allowed to stay with custodians in New Jersey because they were US citizens.

1,158 people give up US citizenship BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – At least 1,158 US taxpayers gave up their passports or their green cards in the first quarter of 2016, in line with the 1,058 expatriations in the final quarter of last year, according to Treasury Department statistics published in the Federal Register. The number of individuals giving up their citizenship has been notably greater in the last three years. In 2015, a record 4,279 US taxpayers gave up their passports or their green cards--over

25 per cent more than the previous record of 3,415 set in 2014. The number in 2013 was 2,999, and the highest level in the years before that was 1,781 in 2011. The acceleration in the number of individuals giving up their citizenship has coincided with increased actions by Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service to trace American undeclared assets and income held abroad, particularly by enforcing the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the requirement to file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts.

According to representative bodies, Americans living abroad are becoming increasingly aware of their US tax reporting obligations. In particular, US citizens are finding it more difficult to bank in foreign territories as a result of FATCA. Treasury is required by statute to publish a quarterly list, including the name of each individual who has lost or renounced US citizenship during the period. For this listing, long-term residents or green card holders are treated as if they were citizens of the US who lost citizenship.

said that the money was reimbursement for work done by Marur on the temple, including renovations in 2013.

Man pleads guilty to grabbing hijab BY A STAFF WRITER ORTH CAROLINA-A North Carolina man has pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor charge after authorities say he grabbed a Muslim woman’s hijab on a Southwest Airlines flight in December and pulled it off. Federal authorities say 37-year-old Gill Parker Payne, of Gastonia, North Carolina, entered the plea last week. He was charged with using force or threat of force to obstruct a Muslim woman in the free exercise of her religious beliefs. The two were on a 11 December flight from Chicago to Albuquerque when the confrontation happened. Authorities say Payne approached the woman, who was sitting several rows in front of him, and told her to take off her hijab–an Islamicstyle headscarf–saying, “This is America!” He then removed the hijab from her head. “No matter one’s faith, all Americans are entitled to peacefully exercise their religious beliefs free from discrimination and violence,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a statement. “Using or threatening force against individuals because of their religion is an affront to the fundamental values of this nation, and the Civil Rights Division will continue to be vigilant in protecting the religious liberties guaranteed to all.
