Nikki Haley says she is voting Trump for president

Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has said she plans to vote for Donald Trump, her former opponent and boss, in the 2024 US presidential election.

Ms Haley, who once served as Mr Trump's United Nations

Model alleges Diddy sexually assaulted her

A model has accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2003, the latest in a string of allegations against the rapper and businessman. Crystal McKinney said in a lawsuit that Mr Combs invited her to his New York studio and plied her with alcohol and marijuana until she became intoxicated. He then forced her to perform oral sex, she said. BBC News has asked representatives of Mr Combs for comment. Earlier this week, Mr Combs apologised after CCTV footage showed him, in a separate incident, attacking singer, model and actress Cassandra "Cassie" Ventura in a hotel hallway in 2016.

ambassador, was the last of his major rivals to drop out of the party primary contest, in early March.

At the time, she did not endorse him but urged him to earn the votes of the millions who had supported her.

On Wednesday, in her first public remarks since leaving the race, she said Mr Trump "has not been perfect", but that President Joe Biden "has been a catastrophe".

Anti-Trump Republican voters largely coalesced behind Ms Haley's presidential bid earlier this year, and her dormant candidacy is still picking up support more than two months after she left the race. She won more than 20% of the vote in at least two state primary elections over the past fortnight.

The Biden campaign is seeking to woo these Haley Republicans, a mix of moderate and college-educated independent voters who could help swing the election toward the Democrat. Mr Biden argues that Mr Trump has repeatedly "made it clear he doesn't want" voters who supported her.

Mr Trump, who has mocked his ex-cabinet member as a "bird brain", was angered by her prolonged primary challenge and recently shot down rumours that she was under consideration to be his vice-presidential running mate.

UCLA police chief removed after campus Gaza melee

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has temporarily removed its chief of police as it probes his officers' response to a violent melee on campus earlier this month.

UCLA Police Chief John Thomas has been reassigned and will be replaced by UCLA Capt Gawin Gibson.

The campus police waited more than two hours to break up a fight that started when masked counterprotesters assaulted a pro-Palestinian student encampment. The response at the top university led to intense criticism, including from the California governor's office, which called the "limited and delayed" police intervention "unacceptable". Mr Thomas was reassigned on Tuesday "pending an examination of our security processes," Mary Osako, UCLA vice chancellor for strategic communications, said in a brief statement provided to BBC News. The decision to replace him was made by Rick Braziel, the vice chancellor leading the newly created Office of Campus Safety.

Trump Says FBI Warrant Shows Biden Wanted Armed Agents To Shoot Him

Washington: Donald Trump drew disbelief -- and some support -- Wednesday after suggesting that standard language from an FBI search warrant executed in 2022 on his Florida mansion showed that President Joe Biden wanted armed agents to shoot him. Trump's latest incendiary claim was in response to a court filing outlining plans for the FBI search at the Mar-a-Lago club, where he kept classified national security documents after leaving the White House. The filing included standard FBI wording stating that agents are allowed to use deadly force if someone is in imminent danger.

But Trump, who is running to unseat Biden in November's election, distorted the statement to say that it showed the

Sensitive files found in Trump bedroom after FBI search

A judge has questioned how Donald Trump could have overlooked sensitive documents that turned up in his bedroom after the FBI searched the former US president’s Florida home. The files were found in his private quarters months after federal agents discovered over 100 classified records as they executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach in the summer of 2022. The judge also noted the prosecution’s belief that Mr Trump was “likely instructing his agents to avoid the surveillance cameras” at the golf club. He denies 40 federal charges of unlawful retention of national defence information. His co-defendants, aide Walt Nauta and former employee Carlos de Oliveira, have also pleaded not guilty.

a-Lago. You know they're just itching to do the unthinkable," Trump said Tuesday in a fundraising email shared by US media.

"Joe Biden was locked & loaded ready to take me out & put my family in danger. He thinks he can frighten me, intimidate me, and KNOCK ME DOWN!"

The wild remarks add to the pile of false claims made by Trump against Biden, whom he has repeatedly accused without evidence of weaponizing the justice system to target him.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for all lawmakers to condemn Trump's "outlandish and dangerous" remarks in a speech in the upper chamber of Congress. "We cannot let this man, Donald Trump, or anybody else, throw these kinds of matches to light flames that could burn our democracy," he said.

Families of children killed and injured in the 2022 Uvalde, Texas mass shooting have announced a $2m (£1.57m) settlement with the city, days before the anniversary of the massacre.

Nineteen children and two teachers were shot when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School, with police taking more than an hour to stop him. Multiple lawsuits were filed against Uvalde's police and local officials over what the Justice Department has described as a chaotic and disorganised response. The $2m going to families of the 17 children killed and two who survived "demonstrates compassion and respect" without plunging the small city of Uvalde into bankruptcy, their attorney, Josh Koskoff, said.

US Embassy Rejects $18.6M Congestion Fees, Cites Immunity

The US embassy in London has refused to pay over USD 18.6 million in unpaid congestion fees, claiming diplomatic immunity from the fines, CNN reported, citing Transport for London (TfL), which manages the city's extensive transport

network.

The congestion charge, introduced in 2003 to reduce traffic and pollution in central London, requires drivers within the zone to pay a USD 19 daily fee between 7 am and 6 pm on weekdays and 12 pm and 6 pm on weekends.

TfL said that it will pursue all unpaid fees and is "pushing for the matter to be taken up at the International Court of Justice." "In accordance with international law as reflected in the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, our position is that the congestion charge is a tax from which diplomatic missions are exempt," a US embassy spokesperson said, CNN reported.

"Our long-standing position is shared by many other diplomatic missions in London," the spokesperson added. However, TfL insisted that in an agreement with the UK government, London's congestion charge constitutes a service and not tax. "This means that diplomats are not exempt from paying it," it stated. It has also politely declared there to be a 'stubborn minority' of embassies that do not pay the charge, despite "representations through diplomatic channels," and posted a lengthy list of offenders.

Biden Opposes Unilateral Palestinian State Recognition: White House

Washington: The White House said Wednesday that President Joe Biden opposes "unilateral recognition" of a Palestinian state, after recent moves by Spain, Ireland and Norway to normalize relations.

Biden "is a strong supporter of a twostate solution and has been throughout his career," National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said. Joe Biden "believes a Palestinian state should be realized through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition," she said. The comments did not directly mention the decision to formally recognize the

Several dead in Iowa as storms batter Midwest

A tornado killed multiple people in a small Iowa town as powerful storms swept through the Midwest. Homes and businesses in Greenfield were destroyed, cars smashed and debris strewn across the landscape. Iowa police confirmed the fatalities at a news briefing on Tuesday night, but were unable to say how many. Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin were also hit by tornadoes, heavy rain and power cuts.

Video footage showing the devastation across Iowa depicted flattened buildings, overturned cars and broken wind turbines.

Joe Biden "is a strong supporter of a two-state solution and has been throughout his career," National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said.

Blinken have been pushing Israel to move forward on a timeline for a Palestinian state, in part by dangling the prospect of Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel.

But Washington vetoed a recent UN Security Council bid to recognize the State of Palestine, saying that recognition could only come through negotiations that take into account Israel's security interests.

US Scientist Shrinivas Kulkarni Wins Shaw Prize in Astronomy

Mr Kulkarni did MS from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1978.

Hong Kong: Shrinivas R Kulkarni, an Indian-origin professor of astronomy from the US will be bestowed the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy for his ground-breaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects. US claims Russia likely launched space weapon into orbit

Washington: (IANS/DPA) The US has claimed that Russia launched what is likely a space weapon capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit, US Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder announced.

Ryder added that the launch took place on May 16, and the Russian satellite is now in the same orbit as a US government satellite. When asked whether the Russian satellite threatened the US satellite, Ryder said: "Well, it's a space defence weapon in the same orbit as a US government satellite."

American UN representative Robert Wood had previously expressed views similar to Ryder's.

The Pentagon stated that it is not the first time Russia has launched such space weapons, referring to 2019 and 2022.

Louisiana House passes bill to restrict abortion pills

Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, the other Shaw Prize awardees are Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the US, who received the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine is awarded in equal shares, and Peter Sarnak, another US scientist who received the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences.

"The Shaw Prize in Astronomy is awarded to Shrinivas R Kulkarni, for his ground-breaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects. His contributions to time-domain astronomy culminated in the conception, construction and leadership of the Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility, which has revolutionised our understanding of the time-variable optical sky," The Shaw Prize Foundation said on Tuesday here while announcing the Shaw Laureates for 2024.

Lawmakers in the US state of Louisiana have advanced a bill that would restrict two drugs commonly used to perform an abortion. The bill, which was approved on Tuesday by the state’s lower chamber, would reclassify mifespristone and misoprostol as controlled substances.

They would carry fines and potential jail time for unauthorised possession. The bill will need to be passed by the state Senate and signed by the Republican governor before it can become law.

Abortion advocates fear it could serve as a template for other states to crack down on the mostused method of abortion in the United States.

Amnesty Chief: Pakistan Must Reverse Current Policies

Karachi: Military courts in Pakistan should not try more than 100 people for their alleged role in attacks on army installations during the riots that followed former premier Imran Khan's arrest on May 9 last year, the chief of Amnesty International has said, urging the government to uphold its international obligations.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights clearly state that civilians should not be tried by military courts, Amnesty International's Secretary General Dr Agnes Callamard said. The Amnesty chief saying that although military trials for civilians are a "no-no" under international law, "sadly it has happened throughout Pakistan's political history… [and] is not a novelty."

outside 10 Downing Street, as he bids to win a fifth term in office for the Conservatives.

The surprise move overturned expectations of an autumn poll, which might have given the Tories a better chance of closing the gap with Labour.

Sir Keir Starmer said it was "time for change" away from "Tory chaos". Labour has been posting large leads in national opinion polls, and has insisted it has a fully organised campaign ready to go. Parliament will now be suspended on Friday, before it is formally shut down on Thursday next week ahead of an official five-week election campaign.

It means there are only two days to pass any outstanding legislation - a move which will mean some of the government's measures will have to be abandoned. October or November had previously been thought more likely for an election date.

But the rumours started swirling from early on Wednesday morning, after confirmation that annual inflation had fallen to its lowest rate in almost three years.

And as Prime Minister's Questions got under way in the Commons, it still was not clear whether an announcement was coming. It was not until just after 17:00 BST that the UK's first July election since 1945 was confirmed.

Ireland, Norway and Spain to recognise Palestinian state

Ireland, Norway, and Spain have announced they will formally recognise a Palestinian state from 28 May.

Spain and Ireland said the decision was not against Israel nor in favour of Hamas, but rather in support of peace.

Israel reacted angrily, warning the move would mean more instability in the region and recalling its ambassadors to all three countries.

Both Hamas and its rival, the Palestinian Authority, have welcomed the recognition.

Norway was first to make its

announcement Wednesday in a move co-ordinated with the other two countries. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in an address that the move was "in support of moderate forces that are on a retreating front in a protracted and cruel conflict".

"This is an investment in the only solution that can bring lasting peace in the Middle East," he added, referring to the so-called two-state solution which would see an Israeli and a Palestinian state existing peacefully next to each other. Ireland and Spain followed suit soon after. "Today, we state clearly our unambiguous support for the equal right to security, dignity, and selfdetermination for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples," Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin said.

The country's Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Simon Harris later stressed that "Hamas is not the Palestinian people".

UK Says China Sending "Lethal Aid" To Russia For Ukraine War

London: China is sending "lethal aid" to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine, Britain's defence minister Grant Shapps said on Wednesday. "Today I can reveal that we have evidence that Russia and China are collaborating on combat equipment for use in Ukraine," he said in a speech at a London conference. Shapps warned that NATO needed to "wake up" and bolster defence spending

Crisis-hit university students ordered to leave UK

Nigerian students have been thrown off university courses and ordered to leave the UK after a currency crisis left them struggling to pay tuition fees on time. Teesside University students were blocked from their studies and reported to the Home Office after the value of Nigeria's naira plummeted, wiping out their savings.

Some told the BBC they felt suicidal as they accused the university of taking a "heartless" approach to those who fell into arrears as a consequence. A university spokesman said failure to pay was a breach of visa sponsorship requirements, and that it had "no choice" but to alert the Home Office.

He argued that democratic states should make a "full-throated case" for freedoms that are dependent on the international order, meaning "we need more allies and partners" worldwide.

"It's time for the world to wake up. And that means translating this moment to concrete plans and capabilities. And that starts with laying the foundations for an alliance-wide increase in spending on our collective deterrent," he said. China and Russia's strategic partnership has only grown closer since the invasion of Ukraine, but Beijing has rebuffed Western claims that it is aiding Moscow's war effort.

US Sending Indian Astronaut to ISS by Year-End: Envoy

Mumbai: US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti has said America will send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station by the end of this year. The NISAR project, a joint Earth-observing mission between US space agency NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is also likely to be launched by the end of the year, Garcetti said on Wednesday.

"We are going to put an Indian astronaut into the International Space Station this year," he said. "We promised when PM (Narendra) Modi came (to the US in 2023) that by the end of this year, we will do this and our mission is still on track to be able to go in space this year," he said.

"Tight Slap To Opposition": PM Modi On Calcutta High Court's OBC Ruling

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called the Calcutta High Court decision of striking down the OBC status granted to "77 classes" in West Bengal since 2010 a "tight slap" to the opposition and alleged that the INDIA bloc's "obsession with appeasement" has crossed every limit. The Calcutta High Court, in its verdict on Wednesday, noted that "religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion" for declaring these classes as OBCs.

Stating that the court's mind is not free from doubt that "the said community (Muslims) has been treated as a commodity for political ends," the bench added, "This is clear from the chain of events that led to the classification of the 77 classes as OBCs and their inclusion to be treated as a vote bank." Addressing

an election meeting in Dwarka here, PM Modi said every time he utters the word 'Muslim', he is accused of making communal statements and asserted that he is only "exposing" the opposition "by stating facts".

China Holds Biggest Military Drills In A

Year Around Taiwan As 'Punishment'

China held its most expansive military drills in a year around Taiwan, just days after Lai Ching-te took over as the island's new president.

The drills on Thursday were intended to "serve as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of 'Taiwan independence' forces and a stern warning against the interference and provocation by external forces," the official Xinhua News Agency reported, citing a military spokesman.

The "external references" line is likely a reference to the US, which is Taiwan's main military backer. President Joe Biden has repeatedly said the US would

defend the democracy of 23 million people if attacked, while China has pledged to bring Taiwan under its control, by force if necessary.

The exercises ramp up pressure on Lai, who took office in the island that makes the bulk of the world's most advanced chips on Monday. He said in his inaugural address that China should drop its threat of war and that neither side of the strait was subordinate to the other.

China has already signaled its displeasure with Lai taking office, saying his speech "sent a dangerous signal of seeking independence." It also condemned US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for congratulating Lai, sanctioned a former US congressman who supported Taipei and hit US defense companies with symbolic sanctions.

The Calcutta High Court, in its verdict on Wednesday, noted that "religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion" for declaring these classes as OBCs.

"Just today, the Calcutta High Court has given a big slap to this INDI alliance. The court has cancelled all OBC certificates issued since 2010. Why? Because the West Bengal government issued unwarranted OBC certificates to Muslims just because of the vote bank." "They have crossed every limit in their obsession with appeasement," he said. "These people say that Muslims have the first right to the country's resources. These people are giving government land to the Waqf Board and asking for votes.

Mr Bremmer, the founder of the Eurasia Group, a risk and research consulting firm, also said the Indian general election, from a global political perspective, is "the only thing that looks stable and consistent... everything else (including the United States election due in November) is problematic".

All of these not being managed well and these pressures are more negative. In fact, the only thing that looks stable and consistent, politically, is the India election. Everything else looks problematic."

Asked about his prediction for the Indian election, which is spread across seven phases and began on April 19, Mr Bremmer said Eurasia Group research suggests the BJP will win 295-315 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, bidding for a third consecutive term, won the 2014 election with 282 seats (336 including its NDA partners) and the 2019 with 303 (353 with NDA allies).

North India Heatwave Red Alert: Next 5 Days

New Delhi: Offering little respite to people reeling under a savage and searing summer wave across the vast swathes of the country's northern belt, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions to prevail over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, HaryanaChandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh as it issued a 'red alert' for the states over the next five days.

The Met Department said maximum daytime temperatures in several districts of these states may breach the 47°C-mark.

Gavaskar Predicts

One-sided RCB vs RR Eliminator

One team between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru will get knocked out of the IPL 2024 on Wednesday. The two sides face off in the Eliminator in Ahmedabad. The winner will go on to face SunRisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 on Friday, while for the lose it will be the end of the road. If Rajasthan Royals are coming off four losses and a rained-off game, RCB have notched up six consecutive wins to sound a warning to their rivals that they mean business in the playoffs. RR, the 2008 IPL winners, suddenly find themselves as the underdogs, when a couple of weeks ago they were red-hot favourites.

When on song, Rajasthan Royals have shown they are unbeatable, but the last four games have exposed frailties in their batting and bowling. The exit of Jos Buttler has taken a lot of firepower out of their batting and a lot will depend on Yashasvi Jaiswal (348 runs), skipper Samson (504) and Riyan Parag (531) to halt the slide. "What RCB has done is nothing short of phenomenal. Firstly, to believe that they can bounce back. That requires something special. You have to say that their leading players Faf du Plessis, Virat KOhli, their senior players, they are the guys who are most encouraging the other players.

Prime Minister Modi was addressing the 'Nari Shakti Samvad Program' in Varanasi.

Prior to his address, he greeted the people while sitting in a specially designed vehicle. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also accompanied him during the roadshow. "This is the first time I have filed my nomination for Kashi without the blessings of my mother. Maa Ganga is

my mother that is why I said that Maa Ganga had first called me to Kashi and now Maa Ganga has adopted me," PM Modi said in his address. He emphasised that it is the first time that women have been brought to the centre stage of policymaking in the country.

Congress Broke India, Modi Will Reclaim PoK: Shivraj Chouhan

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday accused the Congress and India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru of "breaking the country" and asserted that PM Narendra Modi "will bring the nation together".

At a poll meeting in South Delhi in support of BJP candidate Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister exuded confidence that if elected for a third time, PM Modi will take back Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

At a poll meeting in South Delhi in support of BJP candidate Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister exuded confidence that if elected for a third time, PM Modi will take back Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Likening PM Modi to God's messenger, Mr Chouhan said, "He is sent by God to end evil in the country. Under his guidance, the country has prospered and is poised to become a world leader."

"The Congress and Nehru, on the other hand, committed the sin of breaking the country. If (ex-PM) Nehru hadn't stopped the war (of 1947) and allowed it to continue for three more days, the entire Kashmir would have been a part of India today. There wouldn't have been any POK," he said.

The BJP leader asserted that PM Modi will reclaim PoK if voted to power again. He vowed to uphold the "pride of Mother India and the people of Delhi" and exuded confidence that the BJP would win all seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital.

He further said that he was called to Kashi by 'Maa Ganga' and she has 'adopted' him.

"For the first time in the country's history; mothers, sisters, women have come at centre stage of policymaking... this is an important factor in India's success story...You tell me, when the house cannot run without you, how can the country be run without you? This thing was not understood by the governments for 60 years. The Congress and SP governments gave only neglect and insecurity to women," PM Modi said. "What did the Congress and SP governments do to women... They only neglected them. The mentality of the INDI alliance is anti-women. The INDI Alliance opposes Women's Reservations," he added.

Donald Trump's Biopic Shows Him Raping

His First Wife, He Vows To Sue Film

At the Cannes Film Festival, a biopic titled "The Apprentice" depicting Donald Trump's early years has sparked controversy, with Trump's team threatening to sue over its portrayal of rape, erectile dysfunction, and ruthless betrayal. Despite the contentious content, director Ali Abbasi claims the film allows viewers to sympathize with Trump. "The Apprentice," which premiered on Monday, stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as his mentor Roy Cohn. The film, receiving positive reviews, explores Trump's transformation from an ambitious but naive social climber in 1970s

and 1980s New York to a ruthless deal-maker. Abbasi suggested that Trump might not dislike the movie if he

watched it.

Trump's campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, announced plans to sue, calling the film "pure fiction" that sensationalizes debunked lies. The film's most controversial scene depicts Trump raping his first wife, Ivana, a claim she made and later retracted during their divorce proceedings.

Abbasi remains unfazed by the lawsuit threats, noting Trump's low success rate in such legal battles. He emphasized that the film aimed to humanize its characters, offering a nuanced perspective that evokes sympathy without excusing their actions.

No Indian citizen will be left behind in journey to Viksit Bharat@2047: EAM Jaishankar

New Delhi: (IANS) External Affairs S. Jaishankar said on Wednesday that in the country’s journey to Viksit Bharat @2047, no citizen of India will be left behind.

“While understanding that everybody cannot move at the same pace, we all have to firm up to move forward. It is also important to create a social welfare system," the Minister said while speaking at an interactive session on Viksit Bharat @2047 organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce here. Appreciating PM Narendra Modi for his policy choices, Jaishankar said his strong leadership and good judgment have steered India through many crises besides transforming the economy in the last 10 years.

He also pointed out that the government’s response in handling the Covid pandemic, the China crisis, and India’s stance on Russia and Ukraine were in the best interest of India and its citizens.

Airline to 'better manage' flights with AI use

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) at easyJet's new control centre has allowed its operations teams to better manage flights, the airline said. Personnel based at the integrated control centre near Luton Airport, Bedfordshire, have access to Jetstream, a generative AI tool. It helps them solve issues for pilots and crews on the ground more quickly, easyJet said.

The airline's chief executive, Johan Lundgren, said the new facilities came just in time for summer.

The AI would predict standby crew requirements and recommend the best crew options for each operation, it was claimed. More than 250 staff work in the control centre, managing easyJet's daily programme of about 2,000 flights.

Their responsibilities included planning routes, allocating pilots and cabin crew, arranging aircraft maintenance and passenger communications. Mr Lundgren said staff could now benefit from a "modern and bespoke" hub to work from.

"At easyJet, we saw the potential early on for data to improve customer experience and operational efficiency which could help us provide a better flying experience for our customers, crew and pilots," he said. "We continue to invest in and deepen our knowledge and use of AI," Mr Lundgren added.

“As a nation, we must grow for today and leapfrog for tomorrow to realise our goals and aspirations,” he said.

“It is a combination of making it easier to do business, reducing the cost of living, creating world-class infrastructure,

improving our human resources, giving support to small businesses, and building upon the evolving startup ecosystem,” Jaishankar added. He also pointed out that so far, 25

BMW and Jaguar used banned China parts - US probe

BMW, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Volkswagen (VW) used parts made by a supplier on a list of firms banned over alleged links to Chinese forced labour, a US congressional report has said.

At least 8,000 BMW Mini Cooper cars were imported into the US with components from banned Chinese

firm Sichuan Jingweida Technology Group (JWD), according to the report by Senate Finance Committee chairman Ron Wyden's staff.

"Automakers’ self-policing is clearly not doing the job," the Democrat Senator said.

BMW said it had "strict standards and policies regarding employment practices, human rights, and working conditions, which all our direct suppliers must follow".

It added it had taken steps to "halt the importation of affected products and will be conducting a service action with customer and dealer notification for affected motor vehicles".

Food regulator finds no trace of ethylene oxide in Indian spices

New Delhi: (IANS) Amid the global furore over the alleged presence of a "cancer-causing substance" in certain spices from India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has cleared more than a dozen samples of spices from MDH and Everest brands. According to the analysis report, the

extensive testing found no traces of ethylene oxide (ETO) in the samples collected from several states.

The rigorous process of testing for ethylene oxide was performed at NABLaccredited laboratories notified by the FSSAI.

The food regulator also picked up 300 spice samples of other brands for testing and found "no presence of ETO".

The testing process began after several countries started monitoring spice products manufactured by Indian spice giants MDH and Everest over the alleged presence of a ‘cancercausing’ agent. Food regulators in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand warned against using certain products from MDH and Everest over the presence of ethylene oxide at " levels exceeding the permissible limit".

crore people have come out of poverty; 35 crore people have been provided healthcare; Mudra loans have been given to 50 crore people; while 10 crore people have benefited under the Ujjwala scheme. But there is a need to completely eradicate poverty, he added.

The Minister said that preparing for the global workforce is also important given the advantage of the demographic dividend that India enjoys today.

Speaking at the event, PHDCCI President Sanjeev Agrawal said the government’s proactive initiatives and policies have been instrumental in driving India’s growth, which has catalysed significant progress across different sectors, paving the way for economic resilience and achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The comprehensive support of the government has also empowered industries, enhanced infrastructure, and improved the quality of life, paving the way for a brighter future, he added. More than 400 industry stakeholders participated in the event.

India, China Agree on Local Currency Trade: Maldives

The Maldives on Wednesday said both India and China have agreed to cooperate in efforts to pay for imports in their respective countries’ currency instead of the US dollar, which is likely to help Male save almost 50 per cent of the annual USD 1.5 million imports bill from the two countries.

Maldives’ Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed said he met with the Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar two weeks ago, who in turn, said that New Delhi would support and cooperate in arranging for the settlement of import payments in Indian Rupee.

"If BJP Wins, But Less Than 370, Market May...": Prashant Kishor

Poll strategist Prashant Kishor today credited the BJP for shifting the election discourse to winning 370 seats from just crossing the halfway mark in the Lok Sabha. However, a failure to achieve that mark may disappoint the share market, noted Mr Kishor in an exclusive interview with NDTV's Editorin-Chief Sanjay Pugalia. Mr Kishor, who had worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP during 2014 polls, has predicted a victory for the ruling party in the ongoing elections.

He also called the BJP's 370-seat target a "smart" move, which has benefitted them in changing the election discourse.

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday fired fresh salvos at the INDIA bloc in Bihar at a poll rally and tore into Congress-RJD governments for "forced" migration of youth from the state.

Prime Minister accused the Congress and its allies of ruining 60 years of the country and also destroying the lives of three to four generations and said that they will be made to pay the price for such ‘injustice’ by the citizens.

He said that the 21st century cannot move forward with the ‘sins’ of the INDIA bloc and asserted that people of the country will ‘strike back’ at the “illintentions” and “misdeeds” of Congress and RJD on June 4, the day when results for Lok Sabha elections will be declared. “This strike will be against rampant

Police Arrest Golf

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler

Golf world number one Scottie Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested on Friday after allegedly dragging a police officer with his car while trying to avoid traffic controls outside the PGA Championship at Valhalla. In one of the strangest scenes ever at a major tournament, Scheffler was taken into custody by police, booked with a mugshot taken in an orange jumpsuit, released, returned to the course in time for his second round, then recovered well enough to fire a fiveunder par 66 and share third early in the second round.

However, Jaiswal's attempt to scoop against Cameron Green and Samson's stumping off Karn Sharma dented RR's progress. A run-out by Virat Kohli furthered RCB's hopes. Hetmyer calmed RR's nerves with a six before Parag's aggressive hitting off Green and Dayal reduced the equation to 19 off 18 balls. Parag and Hetmyer’s dismissals in quick succession brought a twist, but Powell's crucial boundaries off Ferguson sealed the win.

Indian Mixed 4x400m Relay Team Sets National Record, Wins Gold in Asian Relays

India’s mixed 4x400 relay team set a national record while winning the gold medal at the inaugural edition of Asian Relay Championships here on Monday but missed the target of entering the Paris Olympics qualification bracket. The quartet of Muhammed Ajmal, Jyothika Sri Dandi, Amoj Jacob and Subha Venkatesan clocked 3 minutes 14.12 seconds to win the race. The earlier national record of 3:14.34 was clocked by the Indian team while winning the silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.

India were leading in all the four legs of the relay race. Sri Lanka finished second with a time of 3:17.00 while Vietnam was third with 3:18.45. Monday’s timing will put India in the 21st place — from earlier 23rd — in the Road to Paris list of World Athletics while the aim was to be either in the

15th or 16th spot.

India, thus, are in a difficult position to make the Olympics cut as only 16 teams

"Respect

Must Be Earned, Not Demanded" : Dhoni

MS Dhoni is considered one of the best captains in white-ball cricket and is counted among the best finishers the game has seen but the former India skipper says that he cannot rest on his past laurels and need to keep working hard because “nobody gives you a discount for age”. “The toughest thing is, I am not playing cricket throughout the year. So I have to be fit. Once I come, you are competing against youngsters who are fit and playing international cricket. Professional sport is not easy, nobody gives you a discount for age,” Dhoni said. He has been a much admired leader at CSK and Dhoni said that “we need to earn that respect of the people you’re leading”. “You cannot command or demand respect. You need to earn it. I may have a position in an institution, and yes, that position needs to be respected. But me as an individual sitting on the chair, I need to earn that respect. “I cannot just say ‘respect me’! Rafael Nadal Ready For Emotional French Open Farewell

will compete in the mixed 4x400m relay event in Paris.

Fourteen mixed 4x400m teams have already automatically qualified for the Paris Olympics during the World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas, earlier this month. Only two spots were left to be filled on the basis of best timings of countries till the qualification deadline of June 30.

Czech Republic (3:11.98) and Italy (3:13.56) are currently in the 15th and 16th spot in the Road to Paris list, below the top 14 teams.

India’s target here on Monday was to at least better 3:13.56 and sit at the 16th spot, but they failed to do so.

India will compete in the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay races on Day 2 on Tuesday.

Both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams have made the Paris cut.

Rafael Nadal will bring down the curtain on his 19-year French Open career with the likelihood of adding to his 14 titles greatly diminished before he leaves behind a record and reputation unlikely ever to be matched. The great Spaniard, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, won his first title at Roland Garros as a teenager in 2005. A week on Monday, he will celebrate his 38th birthday.

Geopolitical Impact Explained Iran President's Death

Iran is mourning President Ebrahim Raisi and key officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who died in a helicopter crash in northwest Iran. This incident has significant geopolitical implications, especially given the volatile context in West Asia.

For months, Israel has been engaged in conflict in Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack, with Tehran accused of supporting Hezbollah against Tel Aviv. The situation escalated last month when Iran launched missiles at Israel, which were largely intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome. This was in retaliation for the bombing of Iran's embassy in Syria by suspected Israeli warplanes. Israel responded by attacking a missile defense system in Iran's Isfahan province, which also hosts a uranium enrichment facility.

The helicopter crash has led to widespread speculation. While Iranian state media have termed it an accident, an official statement is awaited. Any indication of foul play could escalate regional tensions. Despite Raisi's death, Iran's political landscape is expected to remain stable under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's leadership.

The US, a strong ally of Israel, has yet to comment on Raisi's death. US-Iran relations have been strained since former President Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to breach the nuclear agreement's limits. President Joe Biden's administration has sought to de-escalate tensions, with reports of indirect talks with Iran to avoid regional conflict.

The crash that killed Raisi, which took place in northwest Iran, comes at a very critical time as far as the West Asia region is concerned

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences over Raisi's death, highlighting his role in strengthening India-Iran relations. This comes shortly after India signed a contract with Iran to operate the Chabahar port, a strategic move for trade with Central Asia. The US had cautioned against this deal due to potential sanctions, but India emphasized the port's broader regional benefits. In summary, the helicopter crash adds to the complexity of an already volatile West Asia, with significant implications for international relations and regional stability.

Can AI Save Elephants from Dying on Rail Tracks?

Tamil Nadu has announced plans for its expansion of the new system to five other vulnerable areas in the state, including Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Hosur, and Gudalur

Tamil Nadu, a southern Indian state, has implemented an AI-based surveillance system to address the increasing deaths of elephants on its railway tracks. Over the past decade, 36 elephant fatalities have been recorded due to train collisions, prompting action. Specifically, 11 of these deaths occurred near Madukkarai, where elephant migratory routes intersect railway tracks.

To mitigate this issue, the forest department has installed 12 towers equipped with AI cameras along the Madukkarai tracks. These cameras, utilizing thermal and visible light imaging, detect elephants within 100 feet of the tracks and promptly alert forest and railway officials. The system, resembling those used by the Indian Army, aims to prevent collisions by guiding elephants away and slowing down trains. At a cost of 72.4 million rupees, the project was launched in February and has already detected

nearly 400 instances of elephants approaching tracks, preventing potential accidents.

The previous method of manual patrols had limitations, making technological intervention crucial. This AI system not only alerts officials about elephants but also other animals nearing the tracks. Similar AI-based initiatives are being implemented in other Indian states to protect wildlife, with sensors installed near railway tracks to alert authorities about animal movements.

Train pilots now receive real-time alerts, even at night, enhancing safety for both humans and wildlife. Beyond India, AI camera systems are utilized in African countries for elephant conservation efforts. Tamil Nadu plans to expand this system to five other vulnerable areas in the state, recognizing the significant role of technological interventions in reducing trainrelated accidents involving wildlife.

Experts Criticize RCB's Celebrations for MS Dhoni Handshake Fiasco

The Faf du Plessis-led side needed a win in their final league game to finish in the Top 4 and the excitement was palpable at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as they won the match by 27 runs. However, the celebrations from the players came under a bit of criticism after MS Dhoni walked off the pitch without shaking hands after waiting for the RCB players. Videos on social media showed that Dhoni waited for the RCB players who kept celebrating before making his way to the dressing room without shaking hands. Virat Kohli later followed him inside to talk to the veteran star.During a discussion on Cricbuzz, former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan blasted RCB players for not taking time to shake hands with Dhoni. "I can see that with the RCB team. They enjoy a lot of support but they also wind out the people. We saw a lot of that tonight. I get that that they have never been in a position where they have won the IPL and they desperately made it to the eliminations. But you don't wanna be one of those teams that everyone wants to lose," Vaughan said.

Top Medical Body Slams Study On Covaxin Safety, Side-Effects, Wants Apology

It (phone call) comes once in three months, once in five months, but it comes because he doesn't care about my film. He cares about me. ‘You, bro, you've done so many films with me, it doesn't matter. Are you okay?' And that is what it is all about."

BNaseeruddin Shah On His Debut Red

VCarpet Moment

eteran actor Naseeruddin Shah recently attended the Cannes Film Festival as a part of the screening of his 1976 film Manthan, almost 50 years after its release. The actor, who was accompanied on the red carpet by his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, called the experienced as "terribly emotional." Speaking with Brut India, the actor said, "It felt unreal to me. I have always seen the red carpet ceremony either on video or in photographs. I have seen all these lovely ladies parading themselves in their gorgeous costumes. I never dreamt I'd be a part of that one day. So, my wife and I decided to keep it as simple as possible. And, of course, it was a terribly emotional experience. Because there were so many friends who were in the film. Girish was a friend and my teacher. He was the director of FTII. Smita was a dear friend and so was Amrish. None of them are there any longer."

ollywood actor Rajkummar Rao, who is gearing up for his upcoming film Mr & Mrs Mahi, recently sat for a fun-filled conversation with Karan and his co-star Janhvi Kapoor about their Bollywood journey. During the interaction, Rajkummar revealed to Karan about losing films to star kids. Karan, while speaking about insider-outsider debate said, “Sometimes they are using it as a toll to make headlines. Immensely successful people are saying, ‘Oh I felt victimized like an outsider and lost opportunity to a star kid'. Somebody is saying, 'I didn't attend a party so I didn't get a role.' I don't know at which party there has been transactions for films.” Rajkummar responded to Karan and said, “When I came to Mumbai, even I was told that ‘you have to attend parties'. Making contacts is not a problem, but going to a party and say, ‘Hi I am here to make contact.' But having said that, I was supposed to do a film, but then suddenly I was not in that film overnight. Somebody who is known and happened to be a star kid got that part. In my mind I think it was not fair. Just because you can control things, you know people, you can make some calls, it is being unfair. That film never got made eventually. That guy was an insider but he could have also been an outsider who is successful and could do the same to you.”

I don’t read the original work; it limits imagination

Ashutosh

Rana

Choosing not to read the book that inspired the series, Ashutosh discusses how he built his retired journalist character in Murder in Mahim

How do you choose a role from the plethora of offers that come your way?

I don’t look at the length of the role; I look at the character’s importance in the subject. If the character wasn’t there, would the story move forward? I had two releases, Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond and Murder in Mahim, where I play two distinct characters. In Ranneeti, I play a suave and overpowering ISI Chief. In Murder in Mahim, my character Peter Fernandes [modelled on the author] is subdued, but he has tremendous [inner] strength. In one, you get to see power, in the other, strength. I have never played such a low-key character. When I play Peter, I notice the character’s body language, the walk, the way he talks and looks. If a character forces me to break my mould and not carry my traits forward, it’s a win-win.

You say that you look at your character’s importance when choosing projects. But so often, talented actors are wasted in films, like you were in Fighter.

It’s a pain an actor has to go through. Sometimes, you have to do it out of respect and affection for someone. I have done films with Siddharth [Anand] like War (2019) and Pathaan (2023). He didn’t ask me, he simply said that I was his lucky mascot and wanted me in his film. Sometimes, it hurts, because while we may imagine a story in a certain way, it doesn’t pan out accordingly. The only problem is when other filmmakers feel that since I have done a special appearance in Siddharth’s film, I’ll do it for everyone. It’s a risk, but you have to find a way around it.

Divya Khossla

reveals ‘Savi’ is modern version of the SatiSavitri story

Actress Divya Khossla, who stars as a protagonist in the upcoming film ‘Savi’, has said that the film is a modern take on ‘Sati Savitri’.

In ‘Savi’, she essays the role of a housewife, who goes to any length to save her family and carries out a prison break with the help of Anil Kapoor’s character to take her husband out of the prison given that there’s a threat to her husband’s life in the jail. The actress attended the trailer launch of her film on Tuesday along with director Abhinay Deo and producer Mukesh Bhatt at a multiplex in the Andheri area of Mumbai.

Talking to the media at the multiplex, the actress said: “‘Savi’ is a modernised version of Sati Savitri. In that story, Savitri brings her husband back from Yamraj. In this film, Savi, being a housewife, goes to the edge of the world to save her husband and her family.”

The actress also spoke about women not getting their due for the kind of labour they carry out. Talking about the subject of women not being recognised for their work and the unpaid labour of a housewife, Divya said: “It's not just a housewife. If a man goes out for a job, a woman nurtures their kids and takes care of the house in every possible way. If a man is lauded for being ambitious then why not women? Women too have dreams and aspirations. A woman's efforts shouldn't be undermined.” ‘Savi’ is set to release in cinemas on May 31.

Taken To Arvind Kejriwal's Home As Cops Probe Assault Charge

New Delhi: The controversy over Swati Maliwal's allegations against Arvind Kejriwal's aide - Bibhav Kumar - escalated sharply Friday afternoon after a police team took the Aam Aadmi Party MP to the Delhi Chief Minister's residence in the city's Civil Lines area, where the alleged assault took place.

Ms Maliwal was taken to the house to 're-create the crime scene', sources said. Earlier a Delhi Police team, accompanied by five forensic scientists, had visited the house. The four-member team was led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Anjitha Chepyala.

On Thursday, in her first public comment on this row, Ms Maliwal called for action against those who allegedly attacked her, and wrote on X, "The last few days have been very difficult..."

The forensic team, which first came with the cops, returned with Ms Maliwal. In addition to collecting CCTV footage from the living room - where Ms Maliwal has claimed she was slapped seven times and kicked in the chest - the police reportedly recorded witness statements and spoke to members of Arvind Kejriwal's security staff, including those seen arguing with the AAP leader in blurry mobile phone footage of the stand-off that was leaked online this morning. UN Ups India's 2024 Growth to 6.9%, Fastest Large Economy

United Nations: (IANS) Indian economy's growth rate projection for this year has been raised by 0.7 per cent to 6.9 per cent from the forecast made in January by the UN and it retains its position as the world's fastest-growing large economy. The better outlook is fueled by lower inflation, robust exports, and increased foreign investments, Hamid Rashid, the chief of the UN’s Global Economic Monitoring

Branch, said on Thursday. "The drivers (of higher projection) are very simple: inflation has come down significantly, and that means the fiscal position is not as constrained as in other countries," he said at the release of the mid-year edition of the World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) report. Exports, which is another element in the improved projection, have been "pretty robust" and India is also benefiting from more investments coming in from other Western sources while the flow to China is coming down, Rashid said. "India has become an alternative investment source or destination for many Western companies," he added. Another factor benefiting India, he said, is the special import arrangement India has with Russia for oil that is lowering its cost, he said.

Man Sentenced For Role In Sex Trafficking Operation At Motel Owned By Indian American Businessman

FRESNO, CA— Roy Gene Drees, 48, from Bakersfield, was sentenced to four years in prison today for using interstate commerce facilities to aid a racketeering enterprise, announced U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

According to court documents, Jatin Bhakta, 29, purchased the Desert Star Motel at 516 South Union Avenue in Bakersfield in 2015.

Between 2015 and late 2020, the Bakersfield Police Department made numerous prostitution-related arrests and child rescues at the motel. Drees lived and worked at the motel until a federal search warrant was executed on January 22, 2021, during which 15 prostitutes, three pimps, Drees, and Bhakta were found at the location. Drees actively facilitated the prostitution operations by making

phone calls, sending text messages, providing transportation, and arranging accommodations.

One pimp, Darnell Edwards, who

had coerced two minor females into prostitution at the Desert Star, was sentenced to 19 years and seven months in federal prison on May 1, 2023.

Ann Coulter: Immigrants Like Vivek Should Be Patient Before Running For President

WASHINGTON, DC Veteran political commentator and author Ann Coulter defended her recent comments about former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, asserting that calling him “Indian” wasn’t racist. Coulter made her remarks on “Dan Abrams Live” on May 16.

During the show, Coulter stated that while she agreed with many of Ramaswamy’s political stances, she wouldn’t have voted for him because he’s Indian. Ramaswamy, a self-made multimillionaire who ran for the Republican presidential nomination, was born in Ohio to immigrants from India.

FBI And Savannah Police Department Establish Digital Media Tipline

SAVANNAH, GA—The FBI, in coordination with the Savannah Police Department, is requesting any videos or photographs taken around the time of the May 18 shooting in Ellis Square (Savannah), where 10 people were shot and another injured by glass.

FBI Atlanta’s Savannah Resident Agency has established a Digital Media Tipline for witnesses to upload media, such as cellphone videos or other recordings, at fbi.gov/ ellissquare-shooting.

The Savannah Police remain the lead investigators on this case. Anyone with information beyond multimedia files should contact Crimestoppers at 912-234-2020.

In response, Ramaswamy expressed disagreement with Coulter’s comments but respected her for voicing her opinion. Coulter reiterated her position, emphasizing her belief that immigrants should wait a few generations before seeking the presidency.

“It’s not racist,” Coulter clarified. “Blacks have been here longer than most whites.

It has nothing to do with race. It has to do with being a citizen for at least three generations. I think that’s a good rule.” She further argued that the founders’ intent for a natural-born president is crucial. Coulter mentioned that while she believes Ramaswamy could hold other high-ranking positions, such as Secretary of State, Supreme Court Justice, or Governor, the presidency should be reserved for those whose families have been citizens for at least three generations. Coulter also cited Senator Ted Cruz as an example of someone who, in her view, does not meet the natural-born citizen requirement due to being born in Canada to a Cuban father and American mother.

FY 2025 Diversity Visa Lottery Winners Announced

WASHINGTON, DC-The U.S. Department of State has announced the winners of the 2025 Diversity Visa (DV) lottery. Out of the millions who entered last year’s lottery, 55,000 applicants have been selected to apply for permanent resident status. The DV lottery, part of the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, offers foreign nationals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S. a chance to obtain a green card and permanent residency.

The application process is straightforward, requiring applicants to fill out an online form with no entry fee. Entrants can check if they have been selected by visiting the “DV Entrant Status Check” portal on the State Department’s website. Here, they must enter the confirmation information received during registration to verify their status.

Selection in the lottery does not guarantee a green card; it merely qualifies an applicant to apply for a diversity visa. Selected applicants must complete the green card application process, which involves filing Form DS260, attending a visa interview at a U.S. Embassy or consulate, and paying any necessary government filing fees.

Beauty Hacks And Tips To Ace Summer Make-Up

New Delhi: (IANS) Achieving the perfect look amid soaring temperatures can be challenging. Use lightweight gels, opt for hydrating primers, and choose long-wearing foundations, says a make-up expert on how to nail the make-up during the summer.

Leiya Phinao Ningshen, national artist for MAC cosmetics, has given out tips to IANS on how to get the perfect look during the summertime.

Swap heavy oil-based skincare for lightweight gel or serum base moisturisers. These lightweight formulas provide the perfect prep for makeup application while keeping your skin fresh and hydrated all day long.

Choose a matte finish or hydrating primers over illuminating ones to create a long-lasting base for your makeup. It will help in controlling oil and minimise shine, ensuring your makeup stays intact throughout the day. Opt for long-wearing foundations with a natural matte or velvet finish to combat the summer heat and help avoid looking creasy. Setting powder for a flawless, fresh finish that lasts all day.

When it comes to blush, contour, and highlight, choose powder formulas for a full glam look. For a natural, no-makeup makeup look, try lip and cheek tints for a subtle flush of colour. Peach blushes are great for a healthy summer glam.

For a summer glow, embrace lip oils or glosses for a hydrated and shiny finish during the day.

Ensure your eye makeup stays put all day by using a waterproof eye base and non-smudging waterproof kajal, and mascara.

Fix plus stay over finishing spray for transfer-free makeup.

In the sweltering heat of summer, embrace "less is more" by opting for a lightweight makeup routine that feels like you're wearing nothing at all.

Utilise multipurpose products. Lipstick on the lips and cheeks Blush on the cheeks and eyes. Champagne or gold highlighter on eyes and cheeks for added sparkle.

Store your makeup products, like lip liners or sheer lipstick, in the fridge for a few minutes before application. Helps in precise and smooth application.

linked to another rare fatal blood clotting disorder AstraZeneca Covid Vax

British-Swedish pharma giant AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, made in collaboration with Oxford University has been found to raise the risk of vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) -- a rare but fatal blood clotting disorder, claimed researchers on Thursday.

While not new, VITT emerged as a new disease following adenovirus vector-based OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine -- sold as Covishield in India and Vaxzevria in Europe -- at the height of the Covid pandemic in 2021.

"An unusually dangerous blood autoantibody directed against a protein termed platelet factor 4 (or PF4)" was found as the reason for VITT.

In separate research in 2023, scientists from Canada, North America, Germany and Italy described a virtually identical disorder with the same PF4 antibody that was fatal in some cases after natural adenovirus (common cold) infection.

Now in a new research, Flinders University in Australia and other international experts found that the PF4 antibodies in both adenovirus infection-associated VITT and classic adenoviral vector VITT share identical molecular fingerprints or signatures.

"Indeed, the pathways of lethal antibody production in these disorders must be virtually identical and have similar genetic risk factors,” said Professor Tom Gordon from Flinders

The researcher noted that the "findings have the important clinical implication that lessons learned from VITT are applicable to rare cases of blood clotting after adenovirus (a common cold) infections, as well as having implications for vaccine development".

The same team had in a 2022 study "cracked the molecular code of the PF4 antibody and identified a genetic risk factor".

Their new findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also have important implications for improving vaccine safety.

The research comes after AstraZeneca "accepted, in a legal document submitted to the High Court in February, that its Covid vaccine 'can, in very rare cases, cause Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Syndrome (TTS)'."

TTS is a rare side effect that can cause people to have blood clots and a low blood platelet count. It has been linked to the death of at least 81 people in the UK as well as hundreds of serious injuries.

The company has also voluntarily withdrawn "marketing authorisation" of its Covid vaccine from Europe and other global markets.

After seven years, WHO updates antibiotic-resistant bacteria list

After a gap of seven years, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday released its updated list of antibioticresistant bacteria, which also provides guidance on the development of new and necessary treatments to curb the rising spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). During AMR infections, driven majorly by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medicines. It majorly affects the treatment of high-burden infections, such as tuberculosis, leading to severe illness and increased mortality rates.

The Bacterial Priority Pathogens List (BPPL) 2024 features 15 families of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are grouped into critical, high, and medium categories for prioritisation.

The new “list is key to guiding investment and grappling with the antibiotics

The threat of antimicrobial resistance has intensified, eroding the efficacy of numerous antibiotics and putting many of the gains of modern medicine at risk,” since the first list was released in 2017: Dr Yukiko

pipeline and access crisis,” said Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Antimicrobial Resistance ad interim.

“The threat of antimicrobial resistance has intensified, eroding the efficacy of numerous antibiotics and putting many of the gains of modern medicine at risk,” since the first list was released in 2017, Dr Yukiko added.

In the BPPL 2024, the WHO removed five pathogen-antibiotic combinations that were included in 2017 and added four new combinations.

The third-generation cephalosporin-

resistant Enterobacterales are now listed as a standalone item within the critical priority category, while Carbapenemresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) infection moved from critical to high priority in BPPL 2024. Further, the critical priority pathogens, such as gram-negative bacteria resistant to last-resort antibiotics, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to the antibiotic rifampicin, continue to present major global threats due to their high burden, and ability to resist treatment and spread resistance to other bacteria, the WHO said.

The BPPL 2024 also emphasises the need for a comprehensive public health approach to addressing AMR, including universal access to quality and affordable measures for prevention, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of infections.

NYPD Drones To Respond To 911 Calls Starting Soon

NEW YORK, NY- New York City is adding “drones” to its ranks of first responders.

Drones soon will fly to 911 calls alongside NYPD officers in five police precincts, including one covering Central Park, said Kaz Daughtry, the department’s chief of operations. “The plan to be rolled out in the coming months is to deploy these drones in response to certain 911 calls of service,” he said during testimony in Congress this week on unmanned aerial systems.

Daughtry only gave broad strokes details about the upcoming pilot program.

He said five as-yet-unspecified NYPD precincts — three in Brooklyn, one in The Bronx, and, finally, the Central Park precinct — will have their roofs retrofitted to house two drone platforms.

The drones’ pilots, however, will remotely steer them from the NYPD’s Lower Manhattan headquarters and provide live information to responding officers, he said.

The first responder program is only the city’s latest drone project under Mayor Eric Adams, a self-professed technophile who has brushed off myriad concerns about the technology.

NYPD drones fly over the city with little to no regulation, according to a 2022 study by the New York Civil Liberties

police precincts across the city will pilot the drone "first responder" program, officials testified in Congress this week.

Union.

“We can’t count on law enforcement agencies to police themselves, and that’s especially true when it comes to the use of invasive, military-grade technologies like drones,” the study states.

The NYPD currently has 85 drones, and their use increased more than 400 percent last year, Daughtry said, contending they can’t be used for warrantless surveillance or as weapons. Daughtry, in his testimony before Congress, also acknowledged concerns that data from Da Jiang Innovations drones — which are used by the NYPD — can potentially be turned over to the Chinese government.

He said the NYPD will phase out their use of that company’s drones.

He will begin and conclude the prayer with “Om,” the mystical syllable that represents the universe and is used to introduce and conclude religious work in Hinduism. From the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, Rajan Zed plans to recite: “Asato ma sad gamaya, Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya,” which he will interpret as: “Lead us from the unreal to the real, Lead us from darkness to light, and Lead us from death to immortality.”

Additionally, he will quote from the Bhagavad-Gita, urging the county commissioners and attendees to always keep the welfare of others in mind.

A global Hindu and interfaith leader, Zed has received the World Interfaith Leader Award and serves on the Advisory Board of The Interfaith Peace Project. California Stretch Becomes New Illegal Immigration Hotspot

DULZURA, CA. — At dawn, a diverse group of migrants arrived at a steep dirt road to surrender to U.S. border agents and claim asylum. Among them were individuals and families from Nepal, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, China, India, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, each with their own story of hope and hardship.

San Diego County has emerged as a preferred entry point for migrants, with 37,370 arrests last month alone, marking a significant shift in immigration patterns. While historically most migrants came from Mexico and Central America, there has been a notable increase in arrivals from countries such as China, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Turkey, and India.

The reasons for this shift are multifaceted, including economic instability, political repression, and changes in migration routes influenced by enforcement measures. Despite the challenges and risks involved, migrants like Justin Agbobli from Togo and Melih from Turkey are determined to pursue their dreams of a better life in America, even if it means crossing borders illegally.

Lawmakers: Addressing India's Human Rights Bolsters US Ties

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Indian American lawmakers emphasized their commitment to addressing human rights issues in India but noted that lecturing New Delhi on the matter is counterproductive. Instead, they advocated for a dialogue with Indian leaders to express their concerns constructively.

At the “Desi Decides” Summit of Indian American Impact on May 16, Congressman Ro Khanna, co-chair of the Congressional India Caucus, highlighted the need for a nuanced approach. Joining Khanna in the panel discussion were lawmakers Shri Thanedar, Pramila Jayapal, and Dr. Ami Bera. Moderated by ABC national correspondent Zohreen Shah, the discussion touched on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s relations with India’s

Muslims. Khanna suggested a more constructive approach: “Having a conversation about the imperfections in our democracy and India’s, and how to collectively advance democracy and human rights, is more productive.”

Bera echoed Khanna’s sentiments, stressing the importance of India’s secular nature. “If India loses its secular identity, it changes its essence and global perception,” Bera said. He also

Indian American Politicians Not Reflective Of Their Population: Kamala Harris

Speaking at “Desis Decide” — an annual summit of democratic party think tank, Indian American, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “Over the years, we’ve had so much more participation by Indian Americans in the electoral process running for office. But the numbers are still not reflective of the size of the growing population.” Currently, there are five elected Indian American members of the Congress — Dr Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, and Shri Thanedar. Talking about the work done by Impact, Harris said, “It really is extraordinary. I wanted to stop by to thank of course the organization for everything and for all that it represents, but also to say especially to those who have run for office or aspire to run for office, that you must run.” Harris also spoke about her mom coming to the US from India when she was 19 years old and marching for Civil Rights in Berkeley. Talking about her childhood memories of India, she said growing up, she would visit India every two years and her grandfather would take her on morning walks. She added, “And I remember as a young girl… hearing them discuss the importance of standing for what is right and fairness.”

Dr. Chandrakant Modi, A Renowned Figure In His Field Passed Away

expressed concerns about press freedom and the viability of opposition in India.

“A vibrant democracy requires freedom of speech, press, and opposition. I hope India’s democracy remains robust,” he added.Pramila Jayapal agreed with Bera and Khanna, underscoring the responsibility to critique both domestic and international issues. “We shouldn’t lecture, but we must consider all U.S. interests, including values like freedom of religion and press,” Jayapal stated. She stressed that raising concerns about human rights aligns with American values and does not undermine U.S.India relations. Shri Thanedar supported a strong U.S.-India partnership, urging India to solidify its commitment to the U.S. “India should recognize its economic power and role in countering China’s aggression,” he added.

CHICAGO, IL- Dr. Chandrakant Modi passed away on Friday, May 16, 2024, at the age of 82.

Dr. Modi graduated from Kasturba Medical College Manipal in 1966 and had a distinguished career spanning 58 years. As a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles of non-violence, he established the Gandhi Committee to erect Skokie’s first Gandhi statue on October 2, 2004. He had an innate ability to connect with people, making everyone feel seen and valued.

USCIS Broadens Green Card Eligibility For STEM Experts

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S.

Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has updated its policy to clarify fields qualifying for a streamlined green card process under Schedule A, Group II. This process targets individuals with “exceptional ability” in STEM fields, broadening the definition of “science or art.”

Expanded Definition of “Science or Art”

The updated policy now includes any field in which colleges and universities commonly offer degrees, allowing a wider range of STEM professionals to qualify for the Schedule A process.

Eligibility Criteria

Exceptional STEM Talent: The high standards for “exceptional ability” remain. Applicants must demonstrate international recognition and acclaim in their field.

Expanded Fields: Degrees in a broader array of STEM disciplines now qualify. Evidence of Exceptional Ability Applicants must meet at least two of the following seven criteria: International Recognition: Awards, prizes, or recognition from reputable international bodies.

Membership in Elite Organizations: Admission to exclusive professional organizations requiring high achievement.

Employers can now directly sponsor these skilled workers for green cards, bypassing the lengthy and intricate PERM process.
