Biden and Trump agree to June and September presidential debates

Joe Biden and Donald Trump have agreed to participate in two televised presidential debates in June and September.

CNN announced the 27 June event on Tuesday, and said it would take place in the key swing state of Georgia.

A second debate on 10 September will be hosted by ABC.

The announcement came shortly after Mr Biden laid out his terms for taking on former President Trump in a debate ahead of November's election.

No audience will attend the June debate in Atlanta, CNN said, while moderators will be announced at a later date.

ABC has yet to announce more details on the debate it is hosting.

Mr Biden broke tradition and proposed two televised debates in June and September. His rival quickly accepted,

Canadian writer and Nobel prize winner

Alice Munro dies at 92

Canadian author Alice Munro, a 2013 Nobel Prize winner for literature, has died at the age of 92. Munro wrote short stories for more than 60 years, often focusing on life in rural Canada. She died at her home in Port Hope, Ontario on Monday night, her family and her publisher have confirmed. Munro was often compared to Russian writer Anton Chekhov for the insight and compassion found in her stories. "Alice Munro is a national treasure - a writer of enormous depth, empathy, and humanity whose work is read, admired, and cherished by readers throughout Canada and around the world," Kristin Cochrane, the CEO of Penguin Random House Canada, said in a statement.

before suggesting they debate every month.

"We believe there should be more than just two opportunities for the American people to hear more from the candidates themselves," the Trump campaign said. Both candidates have traded barbs on social media, with Mr Trump stating:

"Just tell me when. Let's get ready to rumble!!!"

Mr Biden said Mr Trump was "free on Wednesdays" - a reference to his criminal trial in New York, while Mr Trump claimed his rival was the "worst debater" who "can't put two sentences together".

US plans $1 bn Israel arms delivery despite Rafah assault: Reports

Washington: (IANS/DPA) The United States is planning a new arms delivery to Israel worth more than $1 billion, local media reported. US President Joe Biden's administration has informed Congress of this, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, the package contains tank ammunition, tactical vehicles and mortar shells.

According to other US media reports, the government has also initiated the

authorisation process in Congress, which is still at an early stage, according to television channel CNN.

The US government is currently withholding delivery of so-called heavy bombs due to Israel's actions in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip.

Last week, Biden threatened Israel that an Israeli offensive in the city, which is overcrowded with internally displaced persons from other parts of the Gaza Strip, could have consequences for US arms deliveries.

The White House subsequently endeavoured to make it clear that the US government would not abandon Israel and that only this one delivery had been paused.

On Monday, Biden's security advisor, Jake Sullivan, said Washington would continue to provide military assistance to Israel. Biden's spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday, when asked about Israel's actions in Rafah, that Washington had been assured that the Israeli army was carrying out a limited operation and not a major ground operation in Rafah.

Studying If Other Bridges At Risk

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the safety of bridges nationwide following a fatal cargo ship collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore in March. Vice Admiral Peter Gautier highlighted the increased risks posed by larger, more complex ships. A nationwide board of inquiry will assess risk management tools to prevent major incidents.

The National Transportation Safety Board emphasized the need for reviewing bridge protection over

navigable waters since 1988. While praising the Coast Guard's review, they urged immediate action from states, the federal government, and bridge owners.

Kyiv, Ukraine: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced in Kyiv on Wednesday a further $2 billion in military aid for Ukrainian forces holding back Russian onslaughts at several points across the sprawling front. The aid was announced at a press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba weeks after Washington approved a $61 billion package of aid for the country following months of delays in Congress.

Mothers of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA allege 'abuse'

The mothers of former Miss USA and Miss Teen USA have spoken out about why their daughters stepped down from their titles.

One mother told a US morning news show that "the job of their dreams turned out to be a nightmare".

Both pageant queens resigned just one day apart from each other last week.

Miss USA and Miss Teen USA said last week that they support the two titleholders' decision to step down and would announce a successor.

with states to enhance protection for vulnerable bridges. They are identifying bridges and exploring deployable protections amidst evolving vessel dynamics. Meanwhile, the FBI initiated a criminal probe into the collapse, with Maryland estimating a $1.7 to $1.9 billion cost for bridge reconstruction by fall 2028. Controlled explosions were conducted in Baltimore to remove a section of the bridge from the Dali's bow, facilitating wreckage removal by salvage crews using cranes and barges, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Miss Universe, which runs the sister pageants, has not addressed the allegations of abuse and bullying. The BBC has contacted the organisation for comment.

The two mothers told ABC's Good Morning America on Tuesday that they were speaking out on behalf of their daughters as they are bound by nondisclosure agreements (NDAs). Barbara Srivastava, mother of Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava, was interviewed alongside Jackeline Voigt, the mother of former Miss USA Noelia Voigt.

Handlova: Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico was on Wednesday shot multiple times and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a cabinet meeting, officials said, in an attack condemned by EU chiefs.

Fico, a populist leader accused of being Kremlin-friendly, has been prime minister since last year.

Putin aide visits New Delhi for talks on Afghanistan

New Delhi: (IANS) Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President's Special Representative for Afghanistan, held talks with J.P. Singh, Joint Secretary for Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran in the Ministry of External Affairs, here on Wednesday. Kabulov is the Special Presidential Envoy for Afghanistan and also the Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Second Asian Department. Interestingly, his visit to the national capital comes just two days after India and Iran signed a 10-year agreement on Chabahar port which the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to include in the framework of the multilateral International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) project.

6,600 evacuated in wildfire-hit Canada

Ottawa: (IANS) Up to 6,600 residents have been evacuated in Canada's western province of Alberta due to a raging wildfire, local media reported. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo issued the evacuation order Tuesday afternoon after declaring a state of local emergency, CBC News reported.

The evacuation order is in effect for the neighbourhoods of Beacon Hill, Abasand, Prairie Creek and Grayling Terrace. Several areas in Fort McMurray are being evacuated to make way for firefighters, Xinhua news agency reported.

an assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico", the government said in a post on social media. "He is currently being transported by helicopter to Banska Bystrica in a life-threatening condition, because it would take too long to get to Bratislava due to the necessity of an acute intervention", it said.

Fico was shot multiple times, said a post on his official Facebook page.

"We confirm the attack on the prime minister," police spokesman Matej Neumann told AFP.

Handlova local hospital director Marta Eckhardtova said "Fico was brought into our hospital and he was treated at our vascular surgery clinic". She was unable to describe his injuries.

The Dennik N daily said its reporter heard several shots fired and then saw security guards lift the premier off the ground and into a car. The newspaper also reported that police had detained the suspected gunman.

Battles rage as Israeli troops intensify Jabalia

and Rafah operations

Israeli forces and Palestinian groups say there have been intense battles in the northern Gazan town of Jabalia.

Israel's military said troops had killed "a large number of terrorists" in Jabalia's refugee camp, while Hamas said it had killed several soldiers.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled

Jabalia since Saturday, when the military said it would re-enter the area because Hamas had regrouped there.

Fierce fighting is also continuing around the southern city of Rafah.

The UN says 450,000 people taking refuge have been displaced since the start of an Israeli ground operation in the city's eastern outskirts nine days ago. With tanks now pushing into builtup areas and the two nearby border crossings closed or inaccessible, supplies and medical services are dwindling.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that he was "appalled" by the escalation in Rafah, warning it was "worsening an already dire situation".

China condemns US tariff hike as 'bullying'

A U.S. move to raise tariffs on Chinese goods is a sign of weakness, not of strength, and shows that some in the United States may be "losing their minds", China's foreign minister said on Wednesday, in unusually blunt comments.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday unveiled steep tariff increases on Chinese imports including electric vehicle (EV) batteries, computer chips and medical products, risking an election-year standoff with Beijing as he woos American voters who give his economic policies low marks. China

Lawrence Wong becomes Singapore's PM after 20 years

Singapore's fourth generation of leaders will "lead in our own way" with a leadership style that is different from previous generations, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Wednesday as he took oath of office in a planned political transition in the city-state. The 51-year-old economistturned-politician succeeded Lee Hsien Loong, 72, who relinquished his position after two decades; both belonging to the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) that has been driving Singapore's economic progress for more than five decades.

immediately vowed retaliation. "This is the most typical form of bullying in the world today! It shows that some people in the United States have reached the point of losing their minds in order to maintain their unipolar hegemony," Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, according to a statement published by state broadcaster CCTV. "The U.S.'s suppression of China does not prove that the U.S. is strong, but rather exposes that the U.S. has lost its self-confidence and is out of order," he said. The U.S. move, instead of hindering China's development, will inspire its 1.4 billion citizens to work harder, Wang said. "At this critical moment of global economic recovery, the international community should warn the United States not to cause new trouble for the world," he said. Biden said China would probably raise tariffs in retaliation, possibly on unrelated products, but said the move was unlikely to lead to international conflict.

A High Court in Pakistan on Wednesday granted bail to Imran Khan in the 190 million pounds corruption case, in which the jailed former prime minister and his wife are accused of receiving land worth billions of rupees as a bribe from a real estate tycoon.

S Jaishankar Responds To US Sanction Warning Over Chabahar Port Deal

Kolkata: A day after the US warned of "potential risk of sanctions" after India inked a 10-year agreement for running the Chabahar Port in Iran, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasised that the project will benefit the entire region and people should not take a "narrow view" of it.

He also pointed out that the US itself had appreciated the larger relevance of Chabahar in the past.

Amit Shah said the present Lok Sabha elections are about "choosing between corrupt leaders of INDI alliance and honest politician Narendra Modi, who despite being Chief Minister and then Prime Minister never had an allegation of single paisa against him."

"It's a fight between the 'Chinese guarantee' of the INDI Alliance and the concrete promises of Modi Ji. It's a fight between infiltration and the guarantee of citizenship under the CAA. It's a fight between 'Vote for Vikas' and 'Vote for Jihad'! The choice is yours," he said.

Southwest monsoon to hit Kerala by May 31: Weather Office

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded to warning of the United States that "anyone" considering business deals with Tehran needs to be aware of the "potential risk of sanctions."

Bharat Matters' in Kolkata on Wednesday. On being asked about the US' remarks, Mr Jaishankar said, "I did see some of the remarks which were made, but I think it's a question of communicating, convincing and getting people to understand, that this is actually for everyone's benefit. I don't think people should take a narrow view of it." "They (US) have not done so in the past. So, if you look at the US' own attitude towards the port in Chabahar, the US has been appreciative of the fact that Chabahar has a larger relevance...we will work at it," he added.

New Delhi: Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around May 31, setting the stage for the four-month rainfall season crucial for India's farm-based economy. "This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days," the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. "This is not early; it's close to the normal date," IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over the last 150 years, the earliest being May 11, 1918, and the most delayed being June 18, 1972, according to IMD data.

Israel Disappointed by Biden's Warning

Jerusalem: Israel's ambassador to the United Nations expressed disappointment Thursday at US President Joe Biden's threat to stop certain arms supplies to Israel if it invades the crowded Gaza city of Rafah.

"This is a difficult and very disappointing statement to hear from a president to whom we have been grateful since the beginning of the war," Gilad Erdan told Israeli public broadcaster Kan radio, in Israel's first reaction to Biden's warning. Israel has defied international objections by sending in tanks and conducting "targeted raids" in the border city, which it says is home to Hamas's last remaining battalions -- but is also crowded with displaced Palestinian civilians.

India-US Ties Unaffected by Pannun Case: EAM Jaishankar

The upward trajectory of India-US relations has not been impacted at all by allegations of an Indian link to a foiled assassination plot, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said.

In November, the US charged an Indian national of conspiring to murder Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. In an exclusive interview to PTI late Thursday, Jaishankar said the fundamentals of India-US ties are very robust and the allegations have not impacted the relations. "The United States brought to our attention certain information in good faith because we also believe some of it has implications for our own system," he said.

Court Charges BJP's Brij Bhushan

The court has said there is sufficient evidence on record to do so, paving the way for the beginning of the trial against him.

Mr Singh "welcomed" the order, asserting that he was "ready to face it". Friday's order by the Rouse Avenue court comes days after the BJP decided not to repeat Brij Bhushan, who is the party MP from Uttar Pradesh's Kaiserganj, as the candidate from the constituency and decided to field his son Karan Bhushan Singh instead.

US Cop Enters Wrong Apartment, Shoots Dead Black Air Force Officer

Washington: A Black airman in the US Air Force was shot and killed in an "excessive" use of force by a Florida sheriff's deputy who burst into the wrong apartment, a lawyer retained by his family said Thursday.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has represented the families of other African American victims of police violence, demanded a full investigation into the May 3 death of Roger Fortson.

Sheriff Eric Aden of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said the deputy was responding to reports of a "disturbance in progress" when the shooting occurred.

But Crump, at a press conference, said "it wasn't Roger's apartment that had a disturbance."

"He was in his apartment, his sanctuary, his castle, where he had every right to be, and they forcefully entered into his apartment," Crump said, in an "excessive" use of force.

Crump said the 23-year-old Fortson was on FaceTime with his girlfriend, a nurse, when the shooting took place.

"Going To Be Biggest Loser": Indian-American Entrepreneur On Musk Picking China Over India

Vivek Wadhwa, an Indian-American entrepreneur and author, in a social media post, questioned billionaire Elon Musk's decision to choose China over India for Tesla's manufacturing operations. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr Wadhwa wrote that "Elon is going to be the biggest loser" by picking China over India. He quoted a post by the Director of Centre for Russia Europe Asia Studies, Theresa Fallon, who said that US and European automakers are failing in China because they were looking only for short-term gain and transferring technology, management techniques and know-how to China. "It was good while it lasted but that era is over," said Ms Fallon.

Reacting to this, Mr Wadhwa recalled that a few years ago, he exchanged emails with the Tesla CEO about the risks in China. He warned the billionaire that China would "rob him blind" and urged him to consider moving Tesla manufacturing to India

Biden Raises Tariffs on Chinese EVs and Solar Panels

US President Joe Biden is ramping up tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars, solar panels, steel and other goods.

The White House said the measures, which include a 100% border tax on electric cars from China, were a response to unfair policies and intended to protect US jobs.

China has already criticised the plans,

US bans China cryptominer from nuclear base area

US President Joe Biden has ordered a Chinese-owned cryptocurrency miner and its partners to sell land they own near a US nuclear missile base, citing spying concerns. MineOne Partners, which the White House says is majority-owned by Chinese citizens, has been given 120 days to sell the property, where it runs a crypto-mining operation. The land is less than a mile (1.6km) away from an air force base in Wyoming, where intercontinental ballistic missiles are stored. "The proximity of the foreign-owned Real Estate to a strategic missile base... and the presence of specialised and foreign-sourced equipment potentially capable of facilitating surveillance and espionage activities, presents a national security risk", the White House said in a statement.

which were signalled in advance. Analysts said the tariffs were largely symbolic and intended to shore up votes in a tough election year.

They follow months of criticism by former President Donald Trump, who is running for the White House against Mr Biden and has argued his rival's support for electric cars would "kill" the US car industry.

The tariffs announced on Tuesday would hit an estimated $18bn worth of imports, the White House said.

As well as a rise from 25% to 100% on electric vehicle tariffs, levies on solar cells would go up from 25% to 50%.

Tariff rates on certain steel and aluminium products will more than triple to 25%, up from 7.5% or less.

China. I warned him they would rob him blind and urged him to consider moving manufacturing to India instead, where he would have dominated the market by now," Mr Wadhwa wrote.

Mr Wadhwa shared the post on Monday. Since then it has accumulated more than 87,000 views and several comments.

"Great point! Wrong to think Tesla is too pricey for India, look at how Apple is dominating once they got local in manuf and retail. India is set to be its third biggest market very soon," wrote one user. "I am sure he's fully aware of the challenge. Anyways there were good reasons for going with China. 1. They wrote Tesla a blank check, they financed the factory and the tooling completely, nowhere else offered the same deal, 2. Access to battery supply chain," commented another.

Notably, Mr Wadhwa's comments come after Elon Musk postponed his trip to India and headed to China on a surprise visit to the country. According to CNN, during his visit, the billionaire met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who praised Tesla as a "successful model" for US-China collaboration. In China, Mr Musk was seeking Beijing's approval for the rollout of Full Self-Driving software in China and the transfer of its data overseas.

"Anyone Considering...": On India's Chabahar Pact With Iran, A US Warning

HiIndia

Following India's signing of a 10year contract to operate Iran's Chabahar port, the United States swiftly issued a warning reiterating that its sanctions on Tehran persist. The cautionary statement emphasized the need for caution among entities contemplating business dealings with Iran, highlighting the inherent risks involved.

India's move to ink the contract for the operation of the Chabahar port aims at bolstering trade ties with Central Asia. Situated on the Gulf of Oman, the port serves as a crucial gateway for Indian goods to access landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia. This connectivity is facilitated by the International North-South Transport Corridor, a road and rail project that circumvents Pakistan. Notably, India had initially proposed this initiative in 2003. However, the port's progress had been hindered by US sanctions against Iran, primarily due to concerns surrounding Tehran's suspected nuclear activities. In response to queries regarding India's pact with Iran, Vedant Patel,

the deputy spokesperson of the US Department of State, acknowledged the reports but refrained from commenting on India's foreign policy goals. Patel underscored the continuation of US sanctions on Iran, emphasizing their strict enforcement. He cautioned entities engaging in business transactions with Iran to be cognizant of the potential risks and repercussions, unequivocally stating that there are no exemptions from these sanctions.

This warning underscores the US's unwavering stance on maintaining pressure through sanctions against Iran. Despite India's strategic interests

in enhancing regional connectivity and trade, the US remains steadfast in upholding its sanctions regime against Tehran. The development highlights the delicate balance India must navigate between its economic objectives and its relationship with the US, particularly concerning engagements with Iran. As India proceeds with its plans for Chabahar port, it will likely need to tread cautiously to mitigate potential conflicts arising from its alignment with both US interests and regional ambitions.

What Is The Port Plan

BJP's US Allies Back Election Drive with Calls to India

As Indians in the US keenly watch India's parliamentary elections despite being unable to vote, supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are actively engaged in boosting voter turnout back home. The Overseas Friends of BJP-USA (OFBJP-USA) has conducted webinars featuring 32 BJP candidates and encouraged members to call relatives and acquaintances in India to support the party. They've also organized yagnas (ritual offerings) in eight US temples to seek divine blessings for the BJP's success. Car rallies and outreach efforts have further amplified their

campaign. OFBJP-USA aims to convey Prime Minister Modi's development narrative and garner support for BJP candidates, particularly in South, East, and Northeast India. Webinars serve to spread awareness and offer support to candidates. BJP leaders like Dilip Ghosh and candidates like K. Annamalai and

Madhavi Latha participated in these sessions. OFBJP-USA emphasizes its status as an independent organization, though it shares ideological affinity with the BJP. The group operates within US laws, refraining from automated calls or mass messaging. Another group, Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party (USA), has organized events like "Modi ka Parivar" marches but did not respond to inquiries. OFBJP-USA asserts its exclusive right to its name and logo, having registered them with the US Patent and Trademark office. Overall, these efforts highlight the active involvement of overseas BJP supporters in India's electoral process.

This long-term lease replaces a 2016 agreement, aiming to significantly boost trade between India, Iran, and Afghanistan. Pichai Responds To Nadella: Don’t Want To Play To Someone Else’s Dance Music

Zofeen Maqsood Indian American CEO of Google, Sunder Pichai talked about an intense competition in AI and they also said what needs to be done. In an interview with Bloomberg published recently, he said, “One of the ways you can do the wrong thing is by listening to noise out there and playing someone else’s dance music.” Pichai’s remarks can be seen as a response to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s remark last year that he hopes the “new Bing” will make Google “come out and show that they can dance.” “And I want people to know that we made them dance, and I think that’ll be a great day,” Nadella said in February 2023 after it launched the revamped Bing search engine it made with OpenAI. “It’s happening at a faster pace, but you know technology changes tend to get faster over time,” Pichai told Bloomberg. “So, it’s not surprising to me at all.” But “I think we have a clear sense of what we need to do,” Pichai added. Google is still dominating search compared to Bing — something Nadella acknowledged in the time since his remarks about making his rival dance.

Congress plotting to send Ram Lala to tent again: PM Narendra Modi

'How Many Tempos Did it Take to Hand Over Airports to Adani?': Rahul Gandhi

Foreign Bid: $8.5B Offer for 76% of Haldiram's

A global consortium led by top private equity (PE) firm Blackstone, along with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Singapore's GIC, have submitted the bid last week for up to 76 per cent stake in Haldiram's Snacks Food, according to reports.

New Delhi: India's renowned food, sweet and snacks chain Haldiram's is up for grabs as a global group of investors has reportedly submitted a non-binding bid to acquire a controlling stake worth $8.5 billion in the company that was founded in Bikaner, Rajasthan in 1937.

A global consortium led by top private equity (PE) firm Blackstone, along with Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Singapore's GIC, have submitted the bid last week for up to 76 per cent stake in Haldiram's Snacks Food, according to reports.

Both Haldiram's as well as the global consortium are yet to confirm the development.

The food chain is the combined packaged snacks and foods business of the Delhi and Nagpur factions of the Agarwal family.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attacked the Congress, accusing it of indulging in "shameful" politics and plotting to send "Ram Lala to tent" again.

Alleging that the JMM, Congress and INDIA bloc have become the biggest model of corruption, appeasement and dynastic politics, Modi said he has resolved to free India from these vices.

Addressing a public meeting at Jharkhand's Giridih, the prime minister said, "Shameful statements are being issued by Congress leaders over Ram temple. Their leaders are plotting to send Ram Lala to the tent once again, and talk against the Supreme Court judgement." The old idol of Ram Lala was kept in a tent-like structure after the Babri Masjid was demolished. They want to lock the premises again, he claimed and urged people to oust such "corrupt" forces.

Modi said, "Congress forced the nation to Naxalism and destroyed several families, whereas BJP contained Naxal violence in the country." Asserting that the tribal region of Jharkhand bore the brunt of Naxalism, Modi promised that during his third term as the prime minister, he would wipe out Naxalism and terrorism from the face of the country.

Modi alleged that the JMM-led ruling alliance in Jharkhand has been patronising infiltrators in the state.

He said his topmost priority would be giving priority to deprived people. The prime minister also said that the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir is one of the biggest steps in the interest of the nation and he is happy that the people there could celebrate the festival of democracy on Monday after decades.

NDA has already crossed 270 seats: Amit Shah

Kolkata, May 14 (IANS) The Union Home Minister on Tuesday said that NDA has already secured the requisite number of seats to secure a majority

in the Parliament and will form the government again at the Centre.

“We have already secured 270 seats and ensured Narendra Modi’s third term as the Prime Minister. From the fifth phase, we will achieve our target of 400 seats,” the Union Home Minister said while addressing an election meeting at Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency in Howrah district in support of the party candidate Arun Uday Pal Chaudhury.

Amit Shah also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of misleading the people about the centrally-sponsored scheme.

“The funds for these schemes are provided by the Central government and the Mamata Banerjee-led state government is changing the names of these projects and projecting them as the state government projects,” the Union Home Minister said.

Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale (retd) had started working a month ago as a security coordinator for the UN Department of Safety and Security

(DSS) in Gaza on Monday, the UN official told IANS.

Kale was a 46-year-old father of two teenage children who had retired from the Army and joined the UN, the official said.

He joins the roster of more than 200 Indians who have died in the service of the UN. The majority of them - 179 - are peacekeepers but many other Indian civilians, who like employees of the DSS are not peacekeepers, have died working for the UN in various capacities in trouble spots.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and called for a full investigation, his spokesperson Farhan Haq said. He said that the DSS staffers were in the vehicle, with clear UN markings, that was in a convoy engaged in "their regular work (for which) they go to different locations to assess security conditions. And this was the European Hospital in Rafah".

Acid test for Akhilesh Yadav in UP; Shiv Sena, NCP groups in Maharashtra

Polling is being held on Monday in 96 constituencies in 10 states and Union territories, including all 25 in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and 17 in Telangana.

In 2019, BJP had won nearly half of the seats at 42, followed by the YSR Congress Party, which swept Telangana winning 22 of the 25. Among the key candidates in Phase 4 of the election is Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav contesting from the former party stronghold of Kannauj, which the BJP had won on 2019. A former four-time MP, Yadav, son of the late socialist leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, had been elected thrice from Kannauj. Amid Tensions, Iran's Big Nuclear Bomb Warning To Israel

New Delhi: An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reignited concerns over the country's nuclear ambitions, particularly in light of escalating tensions with Israel. Kamal Kharrazi, the adviser, hinted at a shift in Iran's nuclear doctrine if its existence is perceived to be under threat by Israel.

"We have no decision to build a nuclear bomb, but should Iran's existence be threatened, there will be no choice but to change our military doctrine," Kharrazi said.

Tensions between Iran and Israel reached a tipping point when the former launched a barrage of explosive drones and missiles directly targeting Israeli territory, in response to the bombing of Iran's embassy in Syria's capital Damascus earlier in April.

Despite Ayatollah Khamenei's previous fatwa against nuclear weapons development, Iran's then-intelligence minister hinted in 2021 that external pressures, particularly from Western nations, could prompt a reassessment of Iran's nuclear posture.

On May 6, 2024, investigators arrested and charged Archit Grover at the airport in Toronto as he flew in from India, according to the police.

Grover was held for a bail hearing and attended the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. He is also being indicted in the US for firearm-related charges.

Besides, Canada-wide warrants were issued for Simran Preet Panesar, 31, from Brampton, who was also an Air Canada employee at the time of the theft and Arsalan Chaudhary, a 42-year-old man from Mississauga, the statement said.

Mumbai witnessed the first rains of the season, accompanied by a massive duststorm which turned the sky dark around 3 pm today. Rainfall brought relief to the residents of Mumbai and its adjoining area from heat but the skyline of the metropolitan was encircled by dusty winds.

The sudden change in weather brought traffic to a standstill as commuters took shelter during the storm.

Strong winds and rain were witnessed in the Ghatkopar, Bandra Kurla, Dharavi area of Mumbai. Landing and takeoff operations at the Mumbai airport, one of the busiest airports in the country, were temporarily suspended, officials said. The airport authority in an update said the operations resumed at 5:03 pm and it witnessed 15 flight diversions during the storm. The Mumbai Airport last week completed its pre-monsoon runway maintenance successfully, ensuring safe and smooth aircraft operations.

India Shaping Global Economy: Rishi Sunak

London, May 13 (IANS) UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday cited India's rise as an 'economic superpower' as he pledged to create a dynamic, innovative economy fuelled by technological progress.

Insisting that "more will change in the next five years than in the last 30", Sunak, during his speech on security at the Policy Exchange think-tank, spoke

on a "clear plan and bold ideas" to deliver a secure future for the Britons. He also maintained that "new and fast-growing economic superpowers" like India, Indonesia, and Nigeria are significantly reshaping the global economy. "We must be prepared strategically and economically, with robust plans and greater national resilience, to meet this time of instability with strength," said the UK PM while elaborating on the current geopolitical situation. The UK, which has had five Conservative Prime Ministers since 2010, is expected to go to the polls later this year.

Sunak was only spotlighting the resilience demonstrated by the Indian economy as it successfully mitigated the risks of global economic downturn over the recent years, including the Covid-19 aftermath.

Modi maintained that the INDIA bloc had worked out a formula, which would allow five of its leaders, if the coalition came to power, to enjoy a year of premiership each.

“Just imagine what type of a mess we would get to see if the bloc’s plan to have a different PM, every year, for five years, succeeds. However, they are a motley group that is bound to fail,” he said.

“The current elections are for having a government that will give a further boost to the standing and clout enjoyed by the country,” the PM said.

Modi also said the money recovered in raids against politicians “belonged to the country’s poor”.

Biden Surrendering US University Campuses To "Jihadist Freaks": Trump

New Jersey: Former US President Donald Trump came out heavily against Joe Biden over the massive pro-Palestine protests at American universities, and claimed that his successor is surrounded by "fascists" and has 'surrendered' the college campuses to "jihadist freaks" and "anti-American extremists."

Trump further claimed that "the very same people who are funding the violent campus uprisings are also funding Joe Biden's campaign", adding that Biden is running a "radicalised" Democratic Party.

Notably, the college campuses in the US have become a hotspot, with proPalestinian protestors calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The students holding encampments and occupying areas on campus have also led to a strong crackdown and arrests by the police.

Trump further claimed that "the very same people who are funding the violent campus uprisings are also funding Joe Biden's campaign", adding that Biden is running a "radicalised" Democratic Party.

Addressing a huge crowd in Wildwood, New Jersey, on Sunday, Trump said, "He (Biden) is surrendering our college campuses to anarchists, jihadist freaks

and anti-American extremists who are trying to tear down our American flag." "They want to tear down every single place they go. They want to rip down our flag. The chaos and violence happening on our college campuses right now is all because Crooked Joe Biden doesn't know what the hell he's doing. Joe is weak," he added. Taking his attack on the incumbent president further, Trump called on Biden and the Democratic National Committee to return all the donations made by "anti-Semites, American haters and financiers of chaos." "He's (Biden) surrounded by fascists around the Oval Office. It's not him," Trump added. "He's not doing a very good at cheating on elections. He doesn't stand up to our enemies abroad. And he does not stand up to the extremists in his own party, the Democratic Party is becoming radicalised. It's becoming radical left, and they're going to lose our country."

Impactful Screening Of ‘Waking Up In Oak Creek’ Documentary In Chicago

CHICAGO, IL- The Vision of Morton Grove, a suburb of Chicago, together with Cook County United against Hate Crimes and Cook County Commissioners Scott Britton and Maggie Trevor, orchestrated a profoundly impactful screening of the documentary film “Waking up in Oakcreek .” This documentary delves into the tragic shooting that occurred in Oakcreek, Wisconsin on August 5th, 2012, serving as a stark reminder of the urgent need for community solidarity and proactive measures to combat hate crimes.

The event aimed to foster understanding among diverse communities and to strategize effective ways to prevent such atrocities. Despite widespread invitations extended to numerous communities, the turnout was disappointingly low, with only a handful of individuals from the Sikh community in attendance. Among them were Thakar Singh Basati, his wife Bibi Rajinder Kaur Basati, and S Prempal Singh. The sparse Sikh representation

raises questions about the community’s engagement and visibility in local affairs. Organizers shared anecdotes revealing a concerning lack of interaction between long-time residents of Morton Grove and members of the Sikh community, despite their coexistence for over six decades. Many attendees expressed a genuine interest in learning more about Sikh culture and heritage, yet lamented the scarcity of accessible resources on

USCIS Waives Biometrics Fee For Majority Of Immigration Cases

WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has implemented a significant change to streamline and reduce the cost of immigration processes. Starting April 1, 2024, they have eliminated the additional fee for biometrics (such as fingerprints and photographs) for most applications. Biometrics refer to physical characteristics like fingerprints and photographs that are unique to each individual. USCIS collects biometrics to verify applicants’ identities and enhance the security of the immigration system.

This recent rule change has notably decreased the number of applications requiring a separate biometrics fee. Now, the cost of biometrics is included in the main filing fee for most applications, making the process more efficient and economical for many immigrants.

• Previously, most applications necessitated a separate biometrics fee. This included applications for:

• Green Cards (Form I-485): Used for adjusting status to become a lawful permanent resident.

• Work Permits (Form I-765): Utilized to apply for authorization to work in the United States.

• Travel Documents (Form I-131): Applied for permission to travel

outside the U.S. and return as a lawful permanent resident or other eligible nonimmigrant.

• Naturalization (Form N-400): Applied for U.S. citizenship.

• Various other forms: Depending on the specific benefit sought, several other applications and petitions also required a separate biometrics fee.

Since October 1, 2023, the biometrics fee has been waived for applicants using Form I-539 (Application to Extend/ Change Nonimmigrant Status).

While this change applies to most applications, there are a few exceptions. Individuals applying for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or certain cases handled by the Executive Office for Immigration Review will still be required to pay a small $30 fee for biometrics. These exceptions exist due to differing processing requirements or additional security checks associated with these types of cases. USCIS’s decision to eliminate the biometrics fee while adjusting other fees is a strategic move aimed at simplifying the application process, improving accessibility, and addressing stakeholder feedback. By merging the biometrics fee with the main filing fee, USCIS streamlines the process and enhances cost recovery, offsetting potential revenue loss through adjustments in other fees.

the subject within local libraries. Thakar Singh Basati’s personal connection to the Oakcreek tragedy underscored the profound impact of hate crimes on individuals and communities.

Having known seven out of the eight victims, including the eldest, S Subeg Singh Khatra, who hailed from his hometown in India, Basati’s presence served as a poignant reminder of the

interconnectedness of humanity.

The documentary, crafted by S Pardeep Singh Kaleka, son of the late President S Satwant Singh Kaleka, offered a comprehensive exploration of the Oakcreek tragedy and the ensuing outpouring of support from both local and national communities. The physical remnants of the shooting, manifested in bullet holes still embedded in the Gurdwara Sahib building, served as a tangible testament to the enduring scars of hate-fueled violence.

The presence of staff from Commissioner Britton and Commissioner Trevor’s offices underscored the commitment of local government to address community concerns and provide support in the fight against hate crimes.

Commissioner Britton’s close ties to the Sikh community, exemplified by his frequent visits to the Palatine Gurdwara, further reinforce the importance of fostering inclusive relationships across diverse communities.

Throughout the event, attendees were equipped with detailed information on various resources and avenues for combating hate crimes, reaffirming the collective resolve to stand united against bigotry and intolerance. As the evening concluded, it became evident that while challenges persist, moments of solidarity and shared purpose serve as beacons of hope in the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.

Hindus seek relocation of Lord Brahma shrine from Vegas casino

HiIndia Newsdesk RENO, NV- Upset Hindus are calling for the relocation of the Lord Brahma Shrine, situated outside the renowned Caesars Palace casino on the Las Vegas Strip, denouncing its placement as sacrilegious.

Rajan Zed, a prominent Hindu figure, expressed deep concern over what he deemed as highly insensitive and disrespectful positioning of the revered deity. Placing Lord Brahma in proximity to a gambling establishment, adjacent to Hell’s Kitchen with its symbolic pitchfork and Beef Wellington, a risqué circus tent, and a cocktail bar, was seen as an affront to Hindu sentiments. Zed emphasized that Lord Brahma, a central figure in Hinduism, deserves reverence in temples or home shrines, not to be subjected to such denigration. He urged Tom Reed, CEO of Caesars Entertainment, Inc., to uphold the company’s stated values of responsible conduct and relocate the shrine appropriately. Highlighting Hinduism’s status as the world’s oldest and third-largest religion, Zed stressed the importance of respecting symbols of faith.

Sleep Wrinkles

Collagen and elastin are two primary components of the dermis (inner layer) of skin. They form the skin structure and maintain the elasticity of skin.

You wake up, stagger to the bathroom and gaze into the mirror. No, you’re not imagining it. You’ve developed face wrinkles overnight. They’re sleep wrinkles. Sleep wrinkles are temporary. But as your skin loses its elasticity as you age, they can set in.

Here’s what you can do to minimise the chance of them forming in the first place.

How side-sleeping affects your face

Your skin wrinkles for a number of reasons, including ageing, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration, habitual facial expressions (such as grinning, pouting, frowning, squinting) and sleeping positions.

When you sleep on your side or stomach, your face skin is squeezed and crushed lot more than if you sleep on your back. When you sleep on your side or stomach, gravity presses your face against the pillow. Your face skin is distorted as your skin is stretched, compressed and pulled in all directions as you move about in your sleep.

You can reduce these external forces acting on the face by sleeping on your back or changing positions frequently.

Doctors can tell which side you sleep on by looking at your face

In a young face, sleep wrinkles are transient and disappear after waking. Temporary sleep wrinkles can become persistent with time and repetition. As we age, our skin loses elasticity (recoil) and extensibility (stretch), creating ideal conditions for sleep wrinkles or lines to set in and last longer.

The time spent in each sleeping position, the magnitude of external forces applied to each area of the face, as well as the surface area of contact with the pillow surface, also affects the pattern and rate of sleep wrinkle formation.

Skin specialists can often recognise this. People who favour sleeping on one side of their body tend to have a flatter face on their sleeping side and more visible sleep lines.

Can a night skincare routine avoid sleep wrinkles?

Collagen and elastin are two primary components of the dermis (inner layer) of skin. They form the skin structure and maintain the elasticity of skin. Supplementing collagen through skincare routines to enhance skin elasticity can help reduce wrinkle formation.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in human bodies. It holds our skin’s collagen and elastin in a proper configuration, stimulates the production of collagen and adds hydration, which can help slow down wrinkle formation.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most common active ingredients in skincare creams, gels and lotions.

Moisturisers can hydrate the skin in different ways. “Occlusive” substances produce a thin layer of oil on the skin that prevents water loss due to evaporation.

“Humectants” attract and hold water in the skin, and they can differ in their capacity to bind with water, which influences the degree of skin hydration.

Do silk pillowcases actually make a difference?

Silk pillowcases can make a difference in wrinkle formation, if they let your skin glide and move, rather than adding friction and pressure on a single spot.

If you can, use silk sheets and silk pillows.

Studies have also shown pillows designed to reduce mechanical stress during sleep can prevent skin deformations. Such a pillow could be useful in slowing down and preventing the formation of certain facial wrinkles.

Sleeping on your back can reduce the risk of sleep lines, as can a nighttime routine of moisturising before sleep.

Otherwise, lifestyle choices and habits, such quitting smoking, drinking plenty of water, a healthy diet (eating enough vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, yogurt and other fermented foods) and regular use of sunscreens can help improve the appearance of the skin on our face.

Top Medical Body's Advisory Urges People To Avoid Protein Supplements

New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research has pressed for avoiding protein supplements for building body mass and has recommended restricting salt intake, minimising sugar and ultra-processed foods and reading information on food labels to make informed and healthy food choices.

The Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) under the top health research body on Wednesday released revised 'Dietary Guidelines for Indians (DGIs)' to meet the requirements of essential nutrients and prevent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

The DGIs have been drafted by a multidisciplinary committee of experts led by Dr Hemalatha R, Director, ICMR-NIN and have undergone several scientific reviews. Seventeen guidelines have been listed in it.

In the DGIs, the NIN stated that prolonged intake of large amounts of protein powders or consumption of high protein concentrate has been associated

89 pc Indian mothers concerned about kids' screen time

“Mothers believe that increased screen time affects their studies and has a negative impact on the mental and physical health of their children,” the report said.

New Delhi: A whopping 89 per cent of Indian mothers are concerned about the screen time of their children, according to a report on Sunday.

The report, released by market research firm Techarc on Mother’s Day, is based on a survey of 600 working mothers, across four metro cities, having at least one child between grade 3-10 in school.

It explores insights on the digital ecosystem in which mothers operate today viz-a-viz the challenges, concerns, interests, and preferences.

“Mothers believe that increased screen time affects their studies and has a negative impact on the mental and physical health of their children,” the report said. Further, the report showed that privacy (81 per cent), inappropriate content (72 per cent), teenage influencers (45 per cent), deep fakes, and impersonation (26 per cent) were other top concerns bothering mothers. Mothers feel that deep fakes and Gen AI will add to their future parenting worries as they get to see the rising cases along with learning how these can be negatively used to malign the reputation and credibility of individuals. Among the devices, mothers are concerned about the expected popularity of VR headsets, especially after the launch of Apple Vision Pro.

Mothers believe that “this form factor will zone out their children who will lose attentiveness towards the environment adding to their distractions,” the report said. On the other hand, mothers also found the digital world much more useful and relevant for children, compared to five years ago.

More than 60 per cent of the mothers spent 51-85 per cent on their children through digital mediums buying various goods and services. Nearly 20 per cent of digital savvy mothers spent more than 85 per cent, the report said. Mothers’ most trusted digital partners include Amazon (for shopping), Swiggy (for food), and Disney Hotstar (for entertainment)

than 5 per cent of total energy intake and a balanced diet should provide not more than 45 per cent calories from

cereals, and millets and up to 15 per cent of calories from pulses, beans and meat. The rest of the calories should come from nuts, vegetables, fruits and milk. Total fat intake should be less than or equal to 30 per cent energy, the guidelines said. Due to the limited availability and high cost of pulses and meat, a significant proportion of the Indian population relies heavily on cereals, resulting in poor intake of essential macronutrients (essential amino acids and essential fatty acids) and micronutrients, it stated. Low intake of essential nutrients can disrupt metabolism and increase the risk of insulin resistance and associated disorders from a young age. Estimates show that 56.4 per cent of the total disease burden in India is due to unhealthy diets, it said. Healthy diets and physical activity can reduce a substantial proportion of coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypertension (HTN) and prevent up to 80 per cent of type 2 diabetes."A significant proportion of premature deaths can be averted by following a healthy lifestyle," it said, adding that the upsurge in the consumption of highly processed foods laden with sugars and fats, coupled with reduced physical activity and limited access to diverse foods, aggravated micronutrient deficiencies and obesity.

Eating ultra-processed foods may shorten your lifespan, cause early death: Study

Love to binge on packaged baked goods and snacks, fizzy drinks, sugary cereals, and ready-to-eat or heat foods? Beware, it can cut short your lifespan and raise the risk of early death, according to a 30-year-long study published in the journal The BMJ on Thursday.

The risk is because ultra-processed foods often contain colours, emulsifiers, flavours, and other additives and are typically high in energy, added sugar, saturated fat, and salt, but lack vitamins and fibre -- leading to poor health, and raising the risk of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, which can further raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

For the study, an international team of researchers including from the US, Brazil, and China, tracked the long-term health of 74,563 female registered nurses from 11 US states between 1984 and 2018; and 39,501 male health professionals from all 50 US states from 1986 to 2018 with no history of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes.

The results revealed that eating an average of 7 servings per day of ultraprocessed foods caused a 4 per cent higher risk of total deaths and a 9 per cent higher risk of other deaths, including an 8 per cent higher risk of neurodegenerative deaths.

The rate of death from any cause among participants in this group was 1,536 per 100,000 person-years.

Further, eating meat, poultry, and seafood-based ready-to-eat products showed the strongest risk of early death, followed by sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages, dairy-based desserts, and ultra-processed breakfast food.

Even though this is an observational study, so no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect, “the findings provide support for limiting consumption of certain types of ultra-processed food for long-term health,” said the researchers.

“Future studies are warranted to improve the classification of ultra-processed foods and confirm our findings in other populations,” they added.

Indian American Dentist Convicted in Patient's Opioid Death

CRESCENT SPRINGS, KY- An Indian American dentist, Dr. Jay M. Sadrinia, 61, residing in Villa Hills, was sentenced to 20 years in prison today for his illegal prescription of opioids, including morphine, resulting in the death of one of his patients.

Evidence presented during trial and documented in court files revealed that Dr. Sadrinia owned and managed dental clinics in Crescent Springs, Kentucky. Despite clear indications, such as notes within his patients’ charts indicating substance abuse disorders, Sadrinia continued to prescribe potent opioids for routine dental procedures. His unlawful prescription of morphine to a particular patient tragically led to her demise. Charging an exorbitant sum of $37,000 for dental services, Sadrinia also provided the patient with medically unnecessary amounts of narcotics, including morphine. Regrettably, the patient succumbed to a fatal overdose of morphine several days later.

In June 2023, a federal jury found Sadrinia guilty of unlawful distribution of controlled substances and unlawful

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man Is A Fine Tale Of Power And Politics

Dev Patel made his directorial debut with Monkey Man which just hit the theatres. For anyone who may have grown up watching Bollywood films of the 80’s the plot is somewhat similar – a street wise young man seeking to take revenge for his mother’s death. Add the Indian emotional family revenge angle to the master theatrics of Hollywood and you do have an engaging, partthrilling, and entertaining movie that is bound to keep you glued to your seats. While there is blood and gore and family drama do not be mistaken to think that it is all what Monkey Man has to offer. Patel’s classy debut venture also packs in political critique. The film plays an interesting commentary on the political situation in India, the growing authoritarianism in India and how politics engages religion and police to stay relevant and in control. The main character “Kid” seeks to avenge his mother who is brutally killed by a police officer. The film shows how power and politics play a role in the lives of the people, sometimes not for a very good effect.

The film wins for its excellent cinematography and dialogue delivery. It’s a great watch to understand how power dynamics affect humans.

FBI Washington Field Office Alerts Chinese Communities In The U.S. Of Targeted Scam

WASHINGTON, DC- The FBI

Washington Field Office is sounding the alarm on a scam aimed at Chinese communities across the United States and students attending U.S. universities. This deceptive scheme involves criminals posing as law enforcement officials from China to manipulate victims into paying up to avoid false accusations or deportation.

“These fraudsters disguise themselves as Chinese investigators, instilling fear in their victims and exploiting it to extort money,” explained Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg of the FBI Washington Field Office.

“The complexity of this scam, involving multiple layers and perpetrators, makes it particularly convincing. Our aim is to inform Chinese communities about this threat, empowering potential victims to report such incidents.”

The scam operates in four distinct phases:

• Initial Contact: Perpetrators reach out to victims, often masquerading as representatives from U.S. businesses or Chinese diplomatic entities. They initiate conversations under the pretext of minor issues like overdue

bills or unclaimed packages.

• Scare Tactics: Victims are transferred to another scammer impersonating a Chinese law enforcement officer. Using fabricated documents such as arrest warrants, they intimidate victims with details of alleged crimes, sometimes threatening extradition or arrest.

• Surveillance: Victims are coerced into consenting to 24/7 audio and video monitoring, instructed not to discuss the case or conduct online searches. Scammers might even attempt to recruit victims for

Director Clowes commended the SBA’s resource partners, including PACE Women’s Business Center and Pasadena City College Small Business Development Center, for their role in empowering small businesses.

further fraudulent activities, such as gathering incriminating evidence against others.

• Extortion: The final phase involves directing victims to wire money to a Chinese bank account to supposedly prove innocence or secure bail. Scammers may provide instructions or scripts for victims to follow during bank transactions and may even coerce victims into deceiving friends and family to extract more money.

• Protective Measures:

• Refrain from divulging personal or financial information or sending

money if contacted by unknown individuals accusing you of a crime. Cease communication immediately.

• Be cautious of seemingly official phone numbers, as scammers can spoof them using technology.

• Verify the legitimacy of any contact from a U.S. government agency by independently confirming their contact details and reaching out directly.

• Never consent to continuous audio or video surveillance.

• If contacted by someone claiming to be a Chinese authority, reach out to your local FBI office for verification, as legitimate foreign law enforcement activities in the U.S. must be coordinated with federal authorities.

Victims should promptly report any fraudulent or suspicious activities to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center via ic3.gov, providing as much transactional information as possible. Additionally, if money has already been transferred, contact your financial institution immediately to halt or reverse the transaction. Raise awareness among students by reporting such incidents to campus security or public safety offices.

Indian American Lawyer Questions $200K Salary Amid Judgeship Bid

Lawyer Hemalee Patel is facing objections after announcing her candidacy for a judgeship in Brooklyn’s civil court. The reason? Patel has taken a leave of absence while pursuing her new role. However, she continues to receive payroll checks as a lawyer for the Board of Elections. Patel makes about $200,000 a year and with this she will remain on the payroll and collect a check while using her ‘vacation’ or ‘annual leave’ time. Soon as the news came out, her campaign saw objections and her nomination petitions were called into question.

Patel has announced her candidacy for a judgeship in Brooklyn’s civil court. This is not the first time that Patel is eyeing the judgeship. In 2017 too Patel ran for judge seeking to become Brooklyn’s first judge of South Asian descent at the time.

Patel came to the U.S. as a five-yearold with her parents from India. The family settled in Queens, New York. After graduating from New York University, Patel then attended Brooklyn Law School and has been there ever since 1988.
