amil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa led her AIADMK to a second fiveyear term, convincingly defeating a divided opposition and proving wrong exit polls that predicted her ouster. “I am overwhelmed by the resounding victory given by the people. My party and I are indebted to the people of Tamil Nadu,” an emotive Jayalalithaa said as the AIADMK cruised to victory in 134 of the 232 assembly seats. “After 1984, no ruling party in the state has been able to win an election and form the government for a successive term,” she added. The DMK-Congress combine which had hoped to unseat Jayalalithaa had to settle for 97 seats, with the Congress tally getting reduced to just eight. The principal opposition party in the outgoing Assam legislative assembly, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) could win only 13 seats (11 won and leading in two) compared to 18 seats it won in the last assembly elections in 2011. The results have dashed the hopes of the AIUDF, which had hoped to play kingmaker.

he BJP was set to form its first government in the northeast, ousting the Congress in Assam after its 15year uninterrupted rule. BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal promised that the new government would leave no stone unturned to fulfill the expectations of the people of Assam. With results still pouring in, the Bharatiya Janata Party alliance looks set to bag over 85 seats in the 126-member assembly. As per latest reports, the BJP has won 56 seats and is leading in four, while its alliance partners, Asom Gana Parishad has won in 12 and is leading in two seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has won 10 seats and is leading in two. The Congress has won 23 seats, and is leading in three, while its partner United peoples’ Party (UPP) has drawn a blank.

As widely anticipated, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M) unseated the Congress-led United Democratic

Front (UDF) in the May 16 battle. Election officials said the LDF had won 91 seats, with the CPI-M itself grabbing 58. In contrast, the entire UDF tally was 47, a clear sign of the voters’ disgust against a government that battled corruption charges. “This is a vote against the corrupt and those who failed to protect the dignity of women,” CPIM veteran and former chief minister V.S. Didi, Jaya retain power BJP takes Assam and Left grabs Kerala; Congress-DMK alliance was ahead of the ruling All India N.R. Congress in Puducherry IANS, NEW DELHI

W

est Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress crushed the opposition and Tamil Nadu’s AIADMK proved exit polls wrong by retaining power in assembly elections, the biggest popularity test after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP stormed to power in Assam while the Left made a comeback in Kerala amid a washout in West Bengal. The Congress was the worst hit in the five-state election, losing power both in Assam, which it had ruled for 15 long years, and Kerala, where it was confident of winning its second term. The CongressDMK alliance was, however, ahead of the ruling All India N.R. Congress in Puducherry. The Bharatiya Janata Party also made history in Kerala where its veteran O. Rajagopal, 86, was elected from Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram. He will be the first ever BJP member in the Kerala assembly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi promptly congratulated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Tamil Nadu counterpart J. Jayalalithaa. “Across India, people are placing their faith in (the) BJP and see it as the party that can usher in all-round

and inclusive development,” he tweeted. Riding on the development plank, Banerjee led the Trinamool to a landslide win, leading in 214 or more than two-thirds of the seats in the 294-member Bengal assembly. The Congress-Left combine, which had hoped to unseat Banerjee, was left gasping. The Congress was poised to win 44 seats while the

Apple opens development centre in Hyderabad HYDERABAD: Tech giant Apple Inc on May 19 opened a new office in Hyderabad that will focus on development of maps for Apple products like iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. The investment will accelerate maps development and create up to 4,000 jobs, the company said. Apple CEO Tim Cook, who flew in here from Mumbai, formally inaugurated the office along with Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, at WaveRock complex at Nanakramguda. “Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on maps development,” Cook said. “The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities

Left, headed by the CPI-M, just 30 seats, a far cry from the times it had vice-like grip over West Bengal. As Trinamool supporters celebrated wildly, Banerjee said a campaign of slander and lies led to her party’s sweeping win. “People do not like such campaigns. There were all sorts of alliances against us. But people have ultimately made their choice.

“This is for the first time in 49 years that such a massive mandate has been given to a single party,” said Banerjee, whose party hopes to win a whopping 212 seats. Tamil Nadu produced a spectacular result. The AIADMK was set to grab 126 of the 234 seats, leaving the DMK-Congress combine with 102 seats, but far more than what it

won in 2011. An elated Jayalalithaa said: “There are not enough words in dictionary to adequately express my feelings of gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu.” Most exit polls had predicted that the AIADMK would be unseated. There were noisy celebrations outside Jayalalithaa’s residence in Chennai. Holding her portraits, supporters danced to music and burst firecrackers. But Chennai, battered by floods in December, dumped the AIADMK. Its candidates trailed in 12 of the 16 constituencies. Jayalalithaa, however, was set to win from Radhakrishnan Nagar in the city. In a much-awaited victory, the BJP was poised to take power in Assam, with its candidates and allies leading in 85 of the 126 seats. The stunning performance buried the Congress, which is set to win only 24 seats. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which had hoped to play the kingmaker if there was a hung verdict, led in 13 constituencies. Keeping alive Kerala’s tradition of ousting the government in every election, the Congress-led UDF suffered a stunning rout, which its leader and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said he had never expected.

s the poll verdict from four states saw the Congress decimated in two states and regional parties reasserting themselves in another two, BJP floor managers in parliament were keeping an eye on the general anti-Congress mood and also on the numbers in the Rajya Sabha, where crucial legislation needs across-the-spectrum support. “There is a changed scenario. After June biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha, while the Congress strength will come down, there will be enhanced numbers for the likes of the Samajwadi Party and the AIADMK. This can help help government pass key bills in Rajya Sabha,” a BJP source told IANS, exuding confidence. But, will the Trinamool Congrees (TMC), which was poised to storm back to power in West Bengal with over two-thirds majority vote, play ball? party’s victory emerged, indicated she would. “For us, our election manifesto is like ‘raksha kawach’. We have ideological differences with BJP but if there are matters which will help people, we can cooperate,” Banerjee said when asked about Trinamool’s role in passing the stalled Goods and Services Tax Bill (GST) — one of the government’s most important economic measures. The TMC, in its manifesto for

the 2011 assembly elections and the 2014 parliamentary polls, had promised support for the GST, which the Lok Sabha passed in 2015 but is pending in the Rajya Sabha as the BJP-led NDA lacks the numbers there. Assocham President Sunil Kanoria said the BJP could draw comfort from the showing of the TMC, as also of the AIADMK, which convincingly returned to power in Tamil Nadu.

BJP, Mamata are real winners

The real winner in the latest round of elections is the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has finally achieved its objective of capturing power in Assam AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

S

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee

ince the Left Democratic Party (LDF) has lived up to the expectation of replacing the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) every alternate year in Kerala, there is nothing unusual about its victory. The real winner, therefore, in the latest round of elections is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has finally achieved its objective of capturing power in Assam, a goal which it had been pursuing since the time of the antiimmigration agitation of the 1980s, for which Arun Shourie (then in the BJP) had set the ball rolling with his vociferous support of the All Assam Students Union (AASU). Since then, the BJP has been knocking at the door of the Guwahati secretariat with the help of AASU’s successor, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) - the two parties of the Hindu middle class - but was kept at bay by the Congress’ Tarun Gogoi who won three successive

terms. The BJP’s success this time is based on two factors. One is the anti-incumbency feelings against Gogoi and the other is his, and the Congress high command’s, failure to accommodate the ambitious Himanta Biswa Sarma in the party’s scheme of things with the result that he moved to the BJP. For the present, however, the BJP will be delighted that the nightmare of the electoral setbacks in Delhi and Bihar last year has been offset by the victory in Assam. Since the Delhi outcome can be seen to provide an inkling of how the electoral winds are blowing for the BJP in the Hindi belt, the party has reasons to be worried about next year’s Uttar Pradesh elections which cannot be mitigated by the victory in a distant north-eastern state. Unlike the Delhi damper in BJP’s Assam victory, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has shown that poriborton or not, she remains West Bengal’s uncrowned queen. Notwithstanding the per-

ceived disillusionment with her highly personalized, authoritarian and cadre-driven governance among the intelligentsia, she has shown that her overall influence remains intact, irrespective of whether or not any development has taken place in the industrial sector. Arguably, it was too much to expect the Left to erase the memories of its stifling, Stalinist reign of three decades in the company of a palpably sinking Congress. Like the feudalist, family-oriented party, the Communists will have to resign themselves to spending time in the wilderness in West Bengal for the next five years. Their only solace is the success in Kerala. For the Congress, however, it is darkness all around except for the faint glimmer in Delhi. At the higher level of state elections, however, the party is in the dumps. It has lost Assam - or threw it away by mishandling the Himanta Biswa Sarma issue - and has failed to recover in West Bengal.

Pak sees jihad to bleed India: Haqqani PREETHA NAIR, NEW DELHI

P

rosecution of jihadis in Pakistan is difficult as the system considers them to be “the good guys”, according to Husain Haqqani, Pakistan’s former envoy to the US. Talking about his latest book, ‘India vs Pakistan: Why Can’t We Just be Friends?’ Haqqani told IANS in an email interview that Pakistan considered jihad to be a low-cost option to bleed India and that this was the only way for it to ensure some form of military parity. Haqqani, who’s an integral part of the powerful elite in Islamabad and was adviser to four prime ministers, talks in his written replies about jihad, relations with India, Pakistan’s own tryst with the scourge of terrorism, and the nexus between ISI -- Pakistan’s military intelligence service -- and the Islamic jihadi forces. (Excerpts) Q. Can you explain ex-ISI chief Shuja Pasha’s statement on 26/11

terror attack, “Log hamare the, operation hamara nahi tha” (our people but it was not our operation)? A. Pasha said, “our people” were involved, he didn’t say it was Pakistan army officers or ISI men. Pasha could have meant Pakistanis or he could be referring to LeT (Lashkar-e-Taiba) as “our people.” However, Pasha had told ex-CIA Director, General Michael Hayden, that “retired Pakistani army officers and retired intelligence officers” were involved in the planning. General Hayden says so in his book. Condoleezza Rice, then Secretary of State, has also written the same. Q. Rice had warned Pakistan to shut down terror operations. However, nothing has changed. A. Prosecution is difficult in a system where jihadis targeting India are seen as ‘the good guys’. Yes, Secretary Rice had told Islamabad to shut down all terrorist operations. But that wasn’t the first time and certainly not the last. Pakistan has persisted with the

Husain Haqqani

same policy since the 1990s. Q. Though US had named Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi of LeT as the 26/11 mastermind, he is roaming around freely in Pakistan. What is stopping Islamabad from taking action? A. Pakistan sees jihad as a low cost option to bleed India. The security apparatus views terrorism as irregular warfare. Islamabad feels this is the only way to ensure some form of military parity.

Q. What should be Pakistan’s policy on Kashmir? A. Having a normal relationship, people-to-people ties and trade doesn’t mean giving up on legal or political claim. The question I ask is: Is Kashmir really Pakistan’s ‘jugular vein’ if it has survived for 69 years without it? Should the two risk nuclear mass destruction over a quarrel they have not been able to resolve for so long? However, Pakistan’s military has insisted on resolution of the Kashmir imbroglio before opening trade or travel. Q. The book mentions how Pakistan intelligence had passed on the information of 10 terrorists who sneaked into Gujarat in March. Do you feel that its a sincere move to preempt a crisis after Pathankot? A. It’s very positive that Pakistan has shared intelligence with India. But it was more because pressure from India and US. India cancelled scheduled talks and (Prime Minister Nawaz) Sharif was eager to resume dialogue. It was less

likely that this move reflected concern for possible Indian casualties and was more to do with the need to deflect international pressure. Q. Are you hopeful of a breakthrough in Indo-Pak relationship after Pathankot? A. The two foreign secretaries met in New Delhi for the Heart of Asia conference and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi is scheduled to travel to Islamabad for the SAARC summit in November this year. So, talks will continue as before but for a breakthrough, the two sides need to move beyond simply cancelling or rescheduling talks and create an environment for change. Q. How do you see US policy towards Pakistan in the wake of US elections? A. Neither of the current Presidential candidates have expressed a positive view of Pakistan. What should worry my countrymen is that entire US thinktank and the average American share the same view.

AIADMK to retain power, Left captures Kerala Most exit polls had predicted a DMK win in Tamil Nadu; BJP enters Kerala assembly IANS, CHENNAI

P

roving exit polls wrong, Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK appeared set to retain power on May 19, with its candidates on the winning track in 136 of the 232 constituencies. In contrast to widespread expectations that it may seize power, the DMK-Congress alliance was leading only in 86 constituencies, far short of the half-way mark of 117. The PMK led in five places and the DMDK alliance in two. Smaller parties were ahead in three seats. Polling was postponed in two constituencies by the Election Commission. Most exit polls after voting ended on May 16 had predicted a DMK win. The imminent victory set off noisy celebrations outside AIADMK leader and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's residence as well

Puducherry, Tamil Nadu brace for rain CHENNAI: Heavy rainfall will continue in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 24 hours, said the weather department on Wednesday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a depression over southwest Bay of Bengal has moved to 90 km east of Chennai and 70 km of the coast. It is expected to move northnortheastwards and intensify into a deep depression and further into a cyclonic storm over the next 48 hours. Rainfall is also predicted over south coastal and interior Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours. Similarly, heavy rainfall is predicted over south Andhra Pradesh coast during the next 48 hours. According to the IMD, wind speed reaching 55-65 km per hour gusting to 75 km per hour would prevail along and off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 24 hours and south Andhra Pradesh coast during next 48 hours. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea as sea condition will be very rough during the next 48 hours. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has deputed senior officers to areas that may experience heavy rainfall.

as at party offices across the state. The AIADMK had 150 members in the outgoing assembly. The DMK had 23 and the Congress five, indicating the alliance had major gains but not enough to unseat Jayalalithaa.

TRS wins by-election with huge margin

R

uling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Telangana wrested Palair assembly seat from main opposition Congress party with its candidate and state minister T. Nageswara Rao emerging victorious with a huge margin. Nageswara Rao, who is minister for roads and buildings, defeated Sucharitha Reddy of the Congress by over 45,676 votes. In the by-election held in this constituency in Khammam district

The bad news for the AIADMK came from Chennai, which was battered by flash floods in December and whose voters appeared to have overwhelmingly turned against the ruling party. The LDF returned to power in on Monday, 89.73 percent of over 1.90 lakh voters cast their votes. Of the 1,71,061 votes cast, Nageswara Rao polled 94,978 while Sucharitha Reddy got 49,302 votes. P. Sudershan Rao of the Communist Party of India-Marxist finished third with 15,544 votes. The by-election was necessitated by the death of sitting legislator Ramreddy Venkat Reddy of the Congress party, which fielded his widow Sucharitha Reddy to cash in on the sympathy factor. A total of 13 candidates were in the fray. In 2014 elections, Venkat Reddy won the seat by a majority of more than 21,000 votes over his nearest rival M. Swarna Kumari of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Venkat Reddy had polled 69,707 votes while his nearest rival secured 47,844 votes. P. Sudershan Rao of CPI-M finished third with 44,245 votes. The TRS had finished a poor fourth with just 4,041 votes. The party which performed poorly in the district significantly improved its position since then with almost all legislators of the TDP and Congress crossing over. All three state legislators and the lone Lok Sabha member of the YSR Congress Party, who were all elected from Khammam district in 2014 polls, switched loyalties to the TRS.

Kerala, winning 91 of the 140 seats in an election that saw the Congress routed and the BJP entering the assembly after decades of waiting. As widely anticipated, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist

(CPI-M) unseated the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the May 16 battle. Election officials said the LDF had won 91 seats, with the CPI-M itself grabbing 58. In contrast, the entire UDF tally was 47, a clear sign of the voters' disgust against a government that battled corruption charges. "This is a vote against the corrupt and those who failed to protect the dignity of women," thundered CPIM veteran and former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan. He called it a "wave" in favor of the LDF, whose victory will now make Kerala the second state in the country after Tripura to come under Marxist control. "We accept this defeat which we never ever expected," said a stunned Ooomen Chandy, the outgoing chief minister. It was one of the worst electoral defeats for the UDF. The Congress seat tally fell from 39 to 22.

he met office has forecast heavy rains in parts of Andhra Pradesh as the depression over southwest Bay of Bengal may intensify into a cyclonic storm. The depression moved north northwest and lay centered about 120 km south by southeast of Chennai, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday evening. “The system is likely to move north northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, south Andhra Pradesh coast and further intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hours. The system is likely to be

close to Chennai during morning hours of May 18. It will move northwards and then recurve north northeastwards and may intensify into a cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours,” it said. Strong winds with speed reaching 50 to 60 km per hour are likely along and off coastal Andhra. The met office has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chittoor, Anantapur, Kadapa and Kurnool of Rayalaseema in the next few days. Clinton wins Kentucky, Sanders bags Oregon

Last-minute campaign blitz and a significant financial investment ensured Clinton’s win in the Kentucky, while Sanders easily won the Oregon primary IANS, WASHINGTON

Bill Clinton not to serve in Hillary’s cabinet

D

emocrat front-runner Hillary Clinton claimed victory in the Kentucky state primary on May 17 night while rival Bernie Sanders bagged Oregon. It took a last-minute campaign blitz and a significant financial investment for Clinton to win the Kentucky Democratic primary by half a percentage point over Sanders — in a state she won by 35 percentage points over then senator Barack Obama in their 2008 primary clash, CNN reported. Sanders easily won the Oregon primary, and declared at a raucous rally in California that despite pressure from the Clinton campaign to abandon his quest for the nomination, he would stay in the race “until the last ballot is cast”. Clinton did not appear in public on May 17 night, but her campaign tweeted thanks to the people of Kentucky and said “we’re always stronger united”. Clinton maintains an overall lead of 280 pledged delegates with only one significant night remaining in

Now, terror victims can sue countries WASHINGTON: The US Senate on May 16 adopted unanimously a proposed bill that would allow Americans to sue nation-states for terrorist attacks on US soil, despite opposition from the White House and allies such as Saudi Arabia. Dubbed “Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act”, the bill sailed through the upper chamber of Congress without opposition. It now heads to the House of Representatives, which has its own version of the proposal. “This bill is very near and dear to my heart as a New Yorker because it would allow the victims of 9/11 to pursue some small measure of justice,” said Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, according to The Hill. “(This is an) another example of the (John) Cornyn-Schumer collaboration, which works pretty well around here,” he added.

the contest - the California primary on June 7. Clinton now stands at 2,294 votes (pledged: 1,773; superdelegates: 521), Sanders has 1,523 votes (pledged: 1,482; superdelegates: 41). Sanders’ campaign manager Jeff Weaver told CNN that the close race in Kentucky was a sign that a lot of Democrats “are having second

thoughts” about Clinton. “The media is ready to call this race over, but I think voters in the various states want to see this race go on,” Weaver said. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican Party’s presidential nominee won the contest in Oregon which was moot since his remaining rivals have already dropped out of the race.

WASHINGTON: Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said on May 16 that her husband, former US President Bill Clinton, would not serve in her cabinet if she wins the election. Clinton shook her head and mouthed “No” on the campaign trail in Paducah, Kentucky when asked if her husband would be in her cabinet, Xinhua quoted ABC News as saying. The negation came one day after Clinton said on Sunday at a rally in Covington, Kentucky, that she planned to put Bill Clinton “in charge of revitalizing the economy.” “He knows how to do it,” said Clinton. “Especially in places like coal industry and inner cities and other parts of our country that have really been left out.” At another campaign event earlier

May, Clinton said she would bring her husband “out of retirement” to creat jobs.

India ready for NSG membership: US IANS, WASHINGTON

A

mid China and Pakistan’s opposition to India’s bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the US has backed New Delhi’s entry into the group. US State Department spokesman John Kirby on May 13 quoted US President Barack Obama as saying during his visit to India in 2015 that “India meets missile technology control regime requirements and is ready for NSG membership”. To reports that China has blocked India’s membership to the group, Kirby said the US was committed to help India become a member of NSG. On Pakistan and China’s position on India’s membership to the suppliers group, Kirby referred the media persons to the governments of the respective country. “I’m going to refer you to the governments of China and Pakistan with respect to their positions on

India’s membership,” Kirby said. China and Pakistan are closely coordinating their strategy against India’s admission into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Sputnik News said quoting US sources who work with the group. The sources pointed to the fact that when India requested a session with the NSG participating govern-

ments at the recent NSG Consultative Group meeting on April 25 and 26, where it would have made a formal presentation in support of its membership, Pakistan also sought a similar opportunity. Though aware that its request would not be accepted, Pakistan made it in order for China to look “neutral” and reject both applica-

tions on grounds of parity, it said. Sources from the US expressed their disappointment with China’s tactics of “using Pakistan’s non credentials with the NSG to settle scores with India.” The “either both or none” strategy is not a secret; it was coordinated during the visit of Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain to China in November 2015. Sputnik News quoted sources as saying that the Chinese government told President Hussain that if India is allowed into the NSG, China would ensure that Pakistan also gets its membership in the group. However, “if India is allowed to join the NSG and Pakistan is deprived of NSG membership, Beijing will veto the move and block the Indian entry.” “India’s non-proliferation credentials are not comparable with Pakistan’s, as Pakistan has a history of “selling nuclear technology to rogue states like Libya,” the sources noted.

There was a distress call from the flight at 4.26 a.m., nearly two hours after the plane disappeared from the radar, the airline said in a statement. The plane took off from Paris at 11.09 p.m. and was expected to land in Cairo at 3.15 a.m. It lost contact with the radar at 2.45 a.m. The Airbus A320 had 56 passengers, including two infants, and 10 crew members, said Captain Ahmed Adel, vice chairman of EgyptAir. The 56 passengers were 30 Egyptians, 15 French nationals, two Iraqis, and one each from Britain, Belgium, Sudan, Chad, Portugal,

China intercepts US military aircraft WASHINGTON: Two Chinese J-11 tactical jets carried out an “unsafe” intercept of a US EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft that was conducting a routine mission in over the South China Sea, a US defense official said. The Chinese jets came within 50 feet of the US aircraft at one point, the official told CNN. The incident took place on May 17.

razil’s Federal Judiciary sentenced former chief-of-staff and Workers Party (PT) founder Jose Dirceu to 23 years and three months in prison for corruption and money laundering. The decision was announced on May 18 by judge Sergio Moro, who is conducting in the first instance the Operation Car Wash, an investigation that has uncovered a broad corruption scheme in the government-run company Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras), reports Xinhua news agency. Another 10 people were also condemned during the criminal pro-

ceedings including bribe operator Milton Pascowitch, negotiator Fernando Moura and the former minister’s adviser, Roberto Marques. Dirceu, the former strong man during former President Luiz Inacio

Lula da Silva’s government (200310), was previously sentenced to seven years and 11 months in jail for corruption, embezzlement, racketeering and money laundering in a vote-buying scheme in Congress. The PT leader was imprisoned in November 2013 and a year later was placed under house arrest. The former minister was put behind bars once again in August 2015 for his alleged involvement in the Operation Car Wash. A giant corruption scheme was uncovered which amounted to millions of US dollars, involving executives from the government-owned oil company Petrobas and other supplier companies.

ian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi about the disappearance of the EgyptAir flight between Paris and Cairo. They agreed to cooperate closely to establish the circumstances of the disappearance as soon as possible,” said a press release from the Elysee Palace. Aviation experts said the plane probably lost contact with ground radar above the Mediterranean Sea. “Apparently it was just short of Egyptian airspace, so it was likely over the Mediterranean, because the Greek airspace joins the Egyptian airspace around that area,” aviation safety consultant Keith Mackey told Al Jazeera, adding “So that is probably where they will be looking.” Conditions were clear and calm when the plane crossed over the Mediterranean Sea, weather analysts said.

Stolen Christopher Columbus letter retrieved IANS, ROME

A

stolen letter written by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage of discovery to the Americans was retrieved by Italian and US authorities and returned to Italy. The rare letter was printed in Rome in 1493. It had been stolen from the Riccardiana library in Florence, most probably in the early 1990s, and replaced with a fake, Xinhua news agency reported. The theft was only discovered in 2012, and a joint Italian-American probe was launched. Police officers found out the original copy had surfaced in New York during an auction in 1992 and was bought by a private for

some $400,000. Then, the letter was donated to the Library of Congress in Washington in 2004. Italian Culture Minister Dario

Franceschini and US ambassador to Italy John R. Phillips presided over the repatriation ceremony on Wednesday.

Italian explorer Christopher Columbus carried out the first of his four voyages to the Americas in 1492, marking the beginning of the European colonization of the so-called “New World”. In February 1493, while sailing back to Europe, Columbus wrote about the wonders of his voyage in a letter that was later printed in several copies, and in various languages, in order to spread the news of the “discovery” of the Americas. Very few of those original printed copies survived, and one of them was stolen from the Florence library and retrieved in the Library of Congress in Washington. The artefact would be worth around $1.13 million, according to Italian officials.

he 83-year-old father of Ami Bera, the only Indian descent Congressman, has pleaded guilty to illegally funding his son’s election campaigns with at least $260,000. putting at risk his reelection in November. Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell announced on May 10 that Babulal Bera admitted to making contributions to Ami Bera’s two election campaigns fraudulently in the names of other people and over the legal limit. Prosecutors have cleared Ami Bera of involvement in the campaign funding scam, but it makes his reelection prospects harder as he is already facing opposition in his constituency from trade unions in his own Democratic Party. He was reelected to a second term in 2014 by less than 1,500 votes after a bruising campaign. The race was the costliest House of Representatives campaign that year with the two parties together running up a tab of $21 million. Federal prosecutor Phillip A. Ami Bera, a medical doctor who represents the from the 7th California District in the state capital area, told the Sacramento Bee newspaper that he had no idea that his father

had illegally financed his campaign. He said that he has sent the money contributed by his father to the US government. In 2010 Ami Bera lost his first election campaign for the House of Representative for which his father, a retired chemical engineer, contributed $240,000. The successful 2012 campaign received $40,000 from his father.

TORONTO: Even as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized to the Sikh community in the House of Commons in Ottawa for the 1914 Komagata incident, Canadian Sikhs have demanded that the episode should be made part of school curricula across the country. The Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship that was hired by Malaysia-based rich Sikh Baba Gurdit Singh to bring 376 Indians, mostly Sikhs, to Canada to challenge the racist laws of the time in 1914. Since both India and Canada were British dominions at that time, the Indians should have had the right to enter Canada. But the Canadian government of that time put in place various clauses in laws to bar Indians from entering Canada. The Komagata Maru, which entered Vancouver Harbor on May 23, 1914, was forcibly sent back to India after two months. On reaching Budge Budge in Calcutta in September 1914, the passengers were subjected to firing by British Indian police in which 19 of them were killed. In his apology in the House of Commons on May 18, Trudeau said:

B TORONTO: The trial in the IndoCanadian love triangle which led to the murder of a woman in Ottawa in January 2014 is set to begin. The process to select the jury for the trial began on May 18. Gurpreet Ronald, 36, and Bhupinderpal Gill, 39, face firstdegree murder charges in connection with the death of Gill’s wife Jagtar Gill. Both Gurpreet Ronald and Bhupinderpal Gill were fellow drivers at Ottawa’s OC Transpo. Gurpreet Ronald’s husband Jason Ronald also worked as a driver with the same company.

"Canada's government was, without question, responsible for the laws that prevented these passengers from immigrating peacefully and securely. For that, and for every regrettable consequence that followed, we are sorry." "Today — while knowing that no words can fully erase the pain and suffering experienced by the passengers — I offer a sincere apology on behalf of the government for the laws in force at the time that allowed Canada to be indifferent to the plight of the passengers of the Komagata Maru." The Canadian prime minister said, "The Komagata Maru incident is a stain on Canada's past. But the history of our country is one in which we constantly challenge ourselves, and each other, to extend our personal definitions of who is a Canadian. We have learned, and will continue to learn, from the mistakes of our past. We must make sure to never repeat them." Welcoming the apology, advocacy group World Sikh Organization demanded that a Komagata chapter be included in school curricula across Canada.

Sushil, who alongwith his coach Mahabali Satpal, put forward their arguments to WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for holding trials for the 74kg category, was however, disallowed from attending

Sushil’s dreams came under the cloud after Narsingh Yadav booked an Olympic quota in 74kg category and we will submit our points to the High Court and let them decide,” Singh told reporters after the meet-

ing. “We won’t allow Sushil to be in the national camp until the next High Court hearing on May 27.” The meeting comes a day after the High Court order directing WFI to meet Sushil. Former world champion Sushil’s dreams of participating in Rio came under the cloud after Mumbaibased wrestler Narsingh Yadav booked an Olympic quota in 74kg category by settling for the bronze at the World Championships in November 2015. After emerging from the meeting room, Sushil said, “I have been receiving good support from across the country.”

Indian eves finish second in Uber Cup group IANS, KUNSHAN, CHINA

I BOLTON (ENGLAND): Indian boxing sensation Vijender Singh registered his sixth win in a row in the professional arena by outpunching Andrzej Soldra of Poland by technical knockout in three brutal rounds in a Super Middleweight contest at the Macron Stadium here on Friday evening. Facing the first eight-round fight of his fledging professional career, Vijender hammered his opponent right from the start, forcing the referee to stop the contest around two minutes into the third round.

Squad:

t turned out to be a mixed day for India’s shuttlers as the women’s team finished second to enter the quarter-finals of the Uber Cup while it was curtains for the men in Thomas Cup here on Wednesday. Coming into the match against Japan with two 5-0 wins against Australia and Germany, the Saina Nehwal-led women’s team, however, failed to recreate the magic to go down 2-3 in their final group game. India started the day well to go 2-0 up with Saina and double World Championships bronze medallist P.V. Sindhu registering wins in their respective singles matches. But Japan staged a brilliant comeback to win the remaining three matches and top the group, pushing India to second in Group D at the Kunshan Sports Centre. London Olympics bronze medal-

list Saina thrashed Nozomi Okuhara 21-18, 21-6 in the opening singles match to take a 1-0 lead before World No.10 P.V. Sindhu doubled the lead beating Akane Yamaguchi 21-11, 21-18 in the second match. However, Japan bounced back

well in the doubles encounter as the duo of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi beat Jwala Gutta and N. Sikki Reddy 21-11, 21-8 to make it 2-1. World No.12 Sayaka Sato then made it 2-2 as she beat No.113

Ruthvika Shivani Gadde 21-7, 2114 in the third singles match. The last match of the day turned out to be the decider which the Japanese duo of Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Naito won by defeating the combo of Ashwini Ponappa and Sindhu 15-21, 21-19, 21-16. In the last edition, India had lost to Japan in the semi-finals to settle for a historic bronze medal. On the other hand, the men’s team completed its pathetic Thomas Cup group stage campaign with a humiliating 0-5 loss to Indonesia. India, having suffered the first loss to Thailand on May 15 in Group B, and Hong Kong on May 17, came into the match on May 18 against Indonesia to play for pride as they were virtually out after the first two losses. On May 18, World No.21 Ajay Jayaram was defeated by Christie Jonatan 14-21, 12-21 in just 37 minutes.

‘Waited for film to make a comeback’ Actress Kamalinee Mukherjee says she was eagerly waiting for a film like Iraivi to make a comeback to the industry IANS, CHENNAI

A

ctress Kamalinee Mukherjee, last seen in a fleeting but wellreceived role in Kamal Haasan-starrer 2006 Tamil thriller Vettaiyaadu Villayadu, says she is kicked about making a comeback with upcoming film Iraivi. “Even though I played a fleeting role in ‘Vettaiyaadu Villayadu’, it was received warmly and thus, I was eagerly waiting to make a comeback to the industry. But every role that came my way since then didn’t excite me as much I had hoped for,” Kamalinee told IANS. It seems like the long wait paid off with Karthik Subbaraj-directed Iraivi, which she describes as the perfect comeback venture. “When I heard the story from Karthik, I knew I wanted to be part of this project. The clarity and honesty with which he spoke to me, really impressed me. The last time I heard a story with such conviction was when director Krish narrated Gamyam to me,” she said. Iraivi in Tamil means goddess. Does the title refer to the powerful women in the film, going by the posters?

Shruti Haasan, Pawan Kalyan team up for second time CHENNAI: After pairing together in 2012 Telugu blockbuster Gabbar Singh, actors Shruti Haasan and Pawan Kalyan have teamed up for the second time in the upcoming yetuntitled Telugu remake of Tamil film Veeram. In an official statement, the makers confirmed that Shruti is excited to be part of the project. To be directed by S.J. Suryah, the shooting of the project will commence from June. Shruti will finish her portion in her father Kamal Haasan’s upcoming trilingual (Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) Sabaash Naidu and then join the sets of Pawan’s film. Anup Rubens has been roped in to compose the tunes for the film, which will be produced under Northstar Entertainment.

“Most people think this is a woman-centric film. It’s a film where both men and women play very powerful characters and they’re given equal importance,” she said, adding that she plays a very “refreshing” and “challenging” role. Paired with actor-filmmaker S.J. Suryah, she said she had a blast working with him. “Suryah shone in his role. It’s amazing how he fits into a character, so effortlessly. I enjoyed working with him. Since he’s a director, he has amazing patience level to understand what the director wants from a scene,” she said. Slated to release on June 3, the film also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simhaa, Anjali and Pooja Devariya. Talking about her co-stars, Kamalinee said: “No director can trust his actors like Karthik, and it’s because they are so talented. There was so much to learn from the rest of the cast. The kind of energy Vijay and Bobby brought to the sets is amazing. Both Anjali and Pooja played their roles to the tee.” On a concluding note, Kamalinee said, Iraivi will be the kind of film people want to watch it more than once.

‘I like to tread uncharted territory’ CHENNAI: Superstar Mahesh Babu, who is awaiting the release of his forthcoming Telugu family drama Brahmotsavam, says as an actor, he always likes to tread unexplored territories with his projects. “I like to reinvent with each project, in any which way possible. I like to tread uncharted territory and push myself in terms of performance. Brahmotsavam helped me to achieve that,” Mahesh Babu told IANS. Directed by Sreekanth Addala, the film is slated for release in cinemas on Friday. It stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal and Pranitha Subhash among others. This is Mahesh’s second film with Addala after Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. “He first pitched the story two years ago. I liked it, but couldn’t immediately start working as I was committed to other projects. The film is about relationships, said Mahesh, who was fascinated by his character,” Mahesh said. “I haven’t played anything like this before. The best part is that I was required to be myself for the role. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Addala again,” he added.

‘Haven’t been used to full potential’ HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

A

ctor Allu Arjun, who is basking in the phenomenal success of his latest Telugu outing Sarrainodu, says he hasn’t yet been used to his full potential and that there are many genres and different subjects that he would like to explore. “I feel I haven’t been used to the fullest of my potential. There are so many genres to explore and diverse subjects to work on,” Arjun, one of the top cine stars in Telugu film world, told IANS in an exclusive interview. He also feels he has restricted himself to one industry, thereby losing out on opportunity to work with directors from other languages. “In the next five years, I am keen on expanding my base as a pan

south Indian actor. Since most of our films cater to crossover audiences, I think it’s time we make films for multilingual viewers. If Baahubali could rake in over Rs.200 crore, it was only possible because it was released in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi,” he said. Commenting on the successful run of his film, he said: “I just

hope this momentum doesn’t stop. The pressure to succeed has considerably increased as people will now expect my next film to do much better.” “You can’t expect critics to appreciate all kinds of cinema. They are intellectual, well read, so I don’t think they can understand this film,” he said, added

Diversity not all about skin color, says Freida Pinto

BRIEFS Abhishek all praise for Aish’s purple pout

The Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire actress says the debate on diversity would be pointless and redundant if it does not extend beyond skin color SUGANDHA RAWAL, NEW DELHI

F

or Freida Pinto, diversity is not about being “black or brown” or isn’t just confined to what one sees on camera but is what goes behind it. The USbased Indian actress, who found fame with the Oscar winning “Slumdog Millionaire”, says unless the debate on diversity extends beyond skin color, it is “pointless and redundant”. From veteran actors like Shashi Kapoor, Kabir Bedi, Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Anil Kapoor and Lillete Dubey to names like Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone — Indian actors have made their mark in foreign filmdom. While most of them have evaded stereotypical presentation, Freida feels there’s a need to broaden the definition of ‘diversity’. “Everybody wants to talk about diversity, but I like to broaden the definition. It is not just diversity in terms of ethnicity and skin colour, as in black or brown. It has become a redundant conversation. It is not about representing people on sexual orientation. That should never be a barrier for the kind of roles that people play,” Freida told IANS over phone. She added: “I think diversity is a compulsory subject matter and, yes, there is a certain issue in films. But look at the world... It does not look like a white persons’ world. There are all different kinds of people in it and all different kinds of actors and languages.”

US-based Indian actress Freida Pinto feels there’s a need to broaden the definition of diversity.

The 31-year-old, who has already worked with the likes of actor Christian Bale and filmmaker Woody Allen, feels there is a need to focus on other important aspects of filmmaking than just see what meets the eye. She said: “It is not only the representation that you see on camera;

what about the people who write, what about the people who direct, what about the people who produce? So for me, diversity becomes a very pointless conversation after a while if people are only talking about and sticking to color of skin. “Color of the skin is not diversi-

ty.” In a short span of her career in the entertainment industry, Freida has carved out a niche of her own in world cinema through her roles in films like “Miral”, “Day of the Falcon”, “Immortals”, “Desert Dancer” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. Freida was also seen with Bale in Terrence Malick’s film “Knight of Cups”, which brought to light Hollywood’s underbelly. On her part, she is glad that she didn’t wander on “the path where there is a lot of negativity” in the industry. “There is a lot of criticism, a lot of temptation that is always around you and I could see it. I was pretty much protected by the group of people around me and I never had one of the things.” Her journey, the Mumbai girl says, has been a great ride. “I feel it is important to basically take an opportunity that comes your way, but also kind of be able to sit back and enjoy. It is harder for me to do the latter as I always think I am so young that I have to keep going...I have to keep doing that. “It is great to have an ambition but it is kind of a little sad when people don’t enjoy their success,” said Freida, who was a model in Mumbai before she hit the jackpot with Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire”. As far as her current work slate is concerned, Freida will be voicing Mowgli’s adoptive mother in “Jungle Book: Origins”, Warner Brothers’ motion capture live-action adventure.

MUMBAI: While actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s pop purple lip color during an appearance at the 69th Cannes Film Festival got mixed reactions from her fans and the fashion police, her husband Abhishek Bachchan found her look “fantastic”. Asked to comment on Aishwarya’s purple pout, he told IANS: “I think she looked fantastic ... She always does.” Aishwarya’s choice of lip color turned out to be a head turner at the red carpet, but her look was trolled widely on social media. She paired it with an embellished light pink Rami Kadi dress.

Mallika Sherawat attends Unicef dinner CANNES: Actress Mallika Sherawat, whose film "Time Raiders" was screened at the ongoing 69th Cannes Film Festival, attended the Unicef dinner in a gorgeous gown by ace designer Alexis Mabille. The “Murder” actress shared a photograph of herself on Twitter, flaunting Mabille's creation — a shaded, net ensemble. “On my way to the UNICEF dinner, thank you Alexis Mabille for the lovely gown, make-up by Dior, hair by Dessange," Mallika tweeted on May 18 night. This is not the first time that Mallika has made an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. The actress made headlines in 2014 in a pale, pleated Pucci dress she wore to the amfAR Gala.

Dinner at SRK’s home for ‘Azhar’ not an honest depiction Apple CEO a starry affair A MUMBAI: Dinner hosted by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan in honor of Apple CEO Tim Cook on May 18 at his residence ‘Mannat’ turned out to be a starry affair. Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Farhan Khan, A.R. Rahman, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Sania Miza, among other celebrities, made their presence at the event. Cook is in India on his first official visit to the country. He announced that the tech giant will establish a design and development accelerator

facility in Bengaluru, the home of India’s startup scene. He also took out time to visit the Shree Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 21 during his Delhi visit.

film by the name of “Azhar”, based on the life of Mohammad Azharuddin, the legendary cricketer from Hyderabad, is bound to arouse curiosity and attract cricket fans and cinegoers alike to the theatre, but alas! This dramatized version of Azhar’s life, as stated in the disclaimer, is neither an honest depiction nor a captivating one. Chronicling Azharuddin’s life selectively, with a focus on the three match-fixing allegations which were a stigma on his cricketing career and earned him a ban from cricket, the film lacks drama and entertainment and does not delve deep into his life. A combination of innuendoes

Film: “Azhar”; Director: Tony D’souza; Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai, Nargis Fakhri, Kunal Roy Kapur, Lara Dutta, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Gautam Gulati; Rating: **

about other cricketers and courtroom scenes, the film hurriedly skims through some parts of his life and ends up being a half-baked attempt at redeeming Azharuddin, which too, it does not succeed in doing.

“Azhar” lacks, pace and energy. The narration drags, not riveting the viewer to the screen. Nowhere does the film throw light on any aspect of his life that the audience doesn’t know already. Emraan Hashmi as Azhar, makes a sincere effort and that is evident in fact only in his scenes on the ground, where he is playing matches.

So, playing dress up has become way of life. I don’t shy away from it,” Aishwarya stated. Heaven, hell are states of mind, says Dada Vaswani

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Intellectual giants are many. Men of purity and prayer are plenty and then there are some who have totally surrendered themselves to God. In Dada J. P. Vaswani, there is a combination of all these qualities, including humility, compassion and love of fellow creatures. Dada recognizes neither creed, nor class, nor color. To him, all human beings, aye, all creatures, are the children of the One Mother Divine. He believes in the unity of all races and religions in One Spirit. The following is a question-answer session with Rev. Dada J.P. Vaswani Q: Is it necessary to have a Guru? A: That is for each one of us to decide. It is said that if you want to be a thief, you must have a thief for a Guru. If you want to be a gambler, you must receive training under an ace gambler. How much more necessary it is to have a Guru if you want to live the life of the spirit! Q: Is suffering in the world necessary? Do we all have to suffer to grow? A: Suffering is necessary. But a stage comes when suffering does not make a man suffer. He accepts every experience–pleasant or otherwise--as prasadam (holy sacrament) out of the holy hands of the Lord. Then suffering does not make a man suffer. It only makes him evolve. Q: I am just blindly repeating a mantra. How do mantras help when I don’t understand a word I am saying? A: The meanings of all mantras need not necessarily be understood. The sounds of certain mantras create vibrations which

are helpful to seekers on the path. What is needed is that the seeker must repeat the mantra with faith, love and devotion. Q: What is heaven and what is hell? A: Heaven and hell are not locations. Heaven and hell have no address. Heaven and hell are states of the mind. If your mind is happy, if your mind is at peace, if your mind is blessing everyone, you are in heaven. If your mind is agitated, if you have become angry, if you become jealous, if you become envious, if your mind is filled with stress and tension, you are in hell. It is a state of the mind. Heaven and hell are states of mind. Sometimes you are in heaven, sometimes you are in hell. Q: Is there a relationship between science and spirituality? external world. Spirituality is also a science, but it studies the inner world. Now the time has come where both of them are drawing close to each other. Physics, for instance, studies the atom, but after quantum physics the atom is asking about who is the one who studied me? So they are coming closer. But one is concerned with the outer sphere while the other is concerned with the inner sphere. Q: Why was evil created in the first place? Why can’t we all have clean hearts and souls from the very beginning? A: Evil was not created. In the beginning, there was only good. But the absence of good is evil. Evil in itself has no existence of its own. Darkness has no existence of its own. Darkness is absence of light. A room may have been in the dark for 100 years. You go and light a match, a single match, will remove the darkness. The darkness will not tell you - I have lived here for 100 years. How can you drive me out immediately? No, darkness has no existence at all. Darkness is only absence of light. Likewise, evil is only absence of good. Q: I have forgiven my friend for cheating me, but I cannot forget his cheating me. What should I do? A: It is said that forgiveness is healing the wound and forgetting is taking off the scar. If you want the scar to remain with you, you can keep on remembering it. But, if you want to do away with the scar also, you must try and forget. Q: What is one simple exercise I can do to elevate myself? A: Clasp God to your heart and let your hands be busy doing as much good as you can, to as many as you can, in as many ways as you can.

$10,000 reward for clues: teen murder

Former Hindu temple official pleads guilty

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA – The New York Film Academy has offered $10,000 reward for clues leading to arrest of the culprits behind the mysterious death of an Indian American in California. Authorities said 18-year-old Rishi Chaubal-Menon was struck and killed shortly after midnight on October 31, 2015. Menon’s body was found in the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Vineland Street, Investigators did not find any broken glass or pieces of the car at the crime scene. They said they do not know why Menon was on the freeway. Last week, authorities asked for the public’s help to solve the crime. “…We have exhausted all of the leads we have and that’s why we’re pleading with the public now to please help us with this,”

BY A STAFF WRITER LINT TOWNSHIP, MI -- The ex-director of a Flint-area Hindu temple has pleaded guilty to a count of embezzling more than $100,000. Hanumanthaiya Mar ur (76), who pleaded guilty on May 9, initially faced 37 felony counts, but under a plea agreement, three dozen of the charges were dropped. The Indian American was director of the Paschima Kasi Sri Viswanatha Temple in Flint Township. In the plea agreement, he has six months to reimburse money to the temple, and in return prosecutors and temple officials agreed to recommend that he get no upfront time in jail. Man jailed for 15 yrs for helping ISIS fighters BY A STAFF WRITER ERSEY CITY, NJ -- A New Jersey man who tried to help organize a ‘small army’ of ISIS fighters in the Garden State and New York was sentenced to 15 years behind bars on May 10. Alaa Saadeh was part of a group of men who were trying to support the ISIS terror group, prosecutors said. Saadeh admitted he gave money and credit cards to other members of the group to try to help them travel to Syria. He and others in the group watched ISIS propaganda including beheadings and other killings by the terror group. His brother, Nader

Saadeh, was among the group charged in the scheme. Saadeh pleaded guilty in October to conspiring to provide material support to ISIS in Newark federal court before Judge Sarah Wigenton. In addition to the 15-year sentence, Judge Susan Wife imposed lifetime supervised release for Saadeh when he completes his sentence. Officials have said the parents of Alaa and Nader Saadeh were deported more than a decade ago in connection with an alleged credit card fraud case. The Saadeh children were allowed to stay with custodians in New Jersey because they were US citizens.

1,158 people give up US citizenship BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC – At least 1,158 US taxpayers gave up their passports or their green cards in the first quarter of 2016, in line with the 1,058 expatriations in the final quarter of last year, according to Treasury Department statistics published in the Federal Register. The number of individuals giving up their citizenship has been notably greater in the last three years. In 2015, a record 4,279 US taxpayers gave up their passports or their green cards--over

W

25 per cent more than the previous record of 3,415 set in 2014. The number in 2013 was 2,999, and the highest level in the years before that was 1,781 in 2011. The acceleration in the number of individuals giving up their citizenship has coincided with increased actions by Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service to trace American undeclared assets and income held abroad, particularly by enforcing the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the requirement to file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts.

G N I M O C P U

According to representative bodies, Americans living abroad are becoming increasingly aware of their US tax reporting obligations. In particular, US citizens are finding it more difficult to bank in foreign territories as a result of FATCA. Treasury is required by statute to publish a quarterly list, including the name of each individual who has lost or renounced US citizenship during the period. For this listing, long-term residents or green card holders are treated as if they were citizens of the US who lost citizenship.

Hanumanthaiya Marur

said that the money was reimbursement for work done by Marur on the temple, including renovations in 2013.

Man pleads guilty to grabbing hijab BY A STAFF WRITER ORTH CAROLINA-A North Carolina man has pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor charge after authorities say he grabbed a Muslim woman’s hijab on a Southwest Airlines flight in December and pulled it off. Federal authorities say 37-year-old Gill Parker Payne, of Gastonia, North Carolina, entered the plea last week. He was charged with using force or threat of force to obstruct a Muslim woman in the free exercise of her religious beliefs. The two were on a 11 December flight from Chicago to Albuquerque when the confrontation happened. Authorities say Payne approached the woman, who was sitting several rows in front of him, and told her to take off her hijab–an Islamicstyle headscarf–saying, “This is America!” He then removed the hijab from her head. “No matter one’s faith, all Americans are entitled to peacefully exercise their religious beliefs free from discrimination and violence,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a statement. “Using or threatening force against individuals because of their religion is an affront to the fundamental values of this nation, and the Civil Rights Division will continue to be vigilant in protecting the religious liberties guaranteed to all.

Counterfeit $100 bills discovered BY A STAFF WRITER ILLIMANTIC, CT -The Willimantic Police are investigating the use of two counterfeit $100 bills that were exchanged for goods at a local business. The bills were found at Ocean State Job Lot on May 5 during a routine cash count in a money machine. They were not discovered at the time of transaction because they are high-quality reproductions that have all the necessary watermarks and color variations. The police say the bills are able to pass the universal counterfeit detector pen used at most businesses. The bills did have some discrepancies that were found after being examined at a bank that included a too dark vertical security line, the horizontal security strip was crooked, and the serial numbers on the bills were identical. The police alerted residents against the high-quality fake bills being circulated of late.

en love it when women make the first move in a relationship, according to a survey by dating app. The nationwide research was conducted by TrulyMadly with a universe of 7,000 users -- 4,550 men and 2,450 women -- between the age group of 18 to 30. As many as 62 percent of the surveyed women confessed to having made the first move at some point of their dating lives, and 88 percent of the men said they find it "really hot" when the women do so. When it comes to going out for dates, 52 percent of the women think that going Dutch while paying the bill on a date is a good option, while 45 percent women feel that the man should pay for at least the first date. According to a whopping 91 percentage of women, a white tshirt and blue jeans is the sexiest outfit a man can wear, and this seems to be a very popular choice

amongst the men too. As for 62 percent of the women, they said they don't mean to flirt by playing with their hair, but 80 percent men seem to find it rather attractive. "Some of these findings even caught me by surprise, specially the one in which girls reveal that playing with their hair doesn’t mean they’re flirting. Women love pick earrings NEW DELHI: Long dangling earrings and even studs are preferred by most Indian women, reveals a survey. A large-scale customer survey done by online ethnic wear site craftsvilla.com has found that when it comes to accessories, Indian women have a preference for earrings - a whopping 39 percent of them. And 70 percent of these women loved jhumkas, hoops, chandeliers, and dangling clip-ons. This was followed by neck pieces, bindis and bangles in that order. The rest of them, 25.6 percent, chose between pendants, rings or a combination of accessories. Monica Gupta, co-founder craftsvilla.com, said in a statement: “In our survey, women were given a wide choice to define their favorite fashion accessory. In India, making a hole in the ear is an elaborate family ritual. "From a painful process earlier, it has now become much easier. It's normally the grandparents who supervise this process and ensure that a small gold earring is purchased for the child. Hence, earrings stay with us from an early age.”

urn to chilled rose water, sesame seeds, dried mint leaves, honey and cucumber juice to decode the secret of glowing skin, says beauty expert Shahnaz Husain. Here are some easy tips for glowing skin for summer: v Tone the skin daily with chilled rose water, using cotton wool pads. Wipe and stroke the skin with them. Then, pat briskly with the rosewater-soaked cotton wool pads. vMix ground almonds with yogurt and pinch of turmeric. Rub gently, with small circular movements, washing off with water. v Take sesame seeds (til), dried mint (pudina) leaves and honey. Crush the sesame seeds coarsely and powder the dried mint leaves. Mix them with a little honey and apply on the skin. Leave on for five minutes. Rub gently and wash off with water. v Cucumber juice (or pulp) and watermelon fruit can be mixed with

two tablespoons powdered milk. You can put the ingredients in a blender, for a smooth paste. Apply on face and neck and rinse off with water after half an hour. v Take half a cup of water and bring it to a boil. Put green tea leaves in a ceramic bowl. Pour the hot water over it and keep for two minutes. Strain and cool the liquid in the refrigerator. Apply on face with cotton wool to tone the skin.

omen who attend religious services more than once per week are more likely to live longer and may lower the risk of death from heart disease and cancer, a study has found. Middle-aged and older professional women who attended religious services more than once a week had a 27 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 21 percent lower risk of death, the findings claimed. Tyler J VanderWeele and his colleagues from Harvard TH Chan School of Public in Boston examined attendance at religious services and subsequent death in women. The study, published online by JAMA Internal Medicine, analysed attendance at religious services in questionnaires from 1992 to 2012 and data analysis was conducted from the 1996 questionnaire to 2012 for a 16-year follow-up. Among 74,534 women at the 1996 study baseline with reported religious service attendance, 14,158 attended more than once a

week, 30,401 attended once per week, 12,103 attended less than once per week and 17,872 never attended. Women who frequently attended religious services tended to have fewer depressive symptoms and more likely to be married. The findings showed that women who attended religious services more than once per week had a 33 percent lower risk of death compared with women who never attended religious services.

Women who attended services weekly had a 26 percent lower risk and those who attended services less than weekly had a 13 percent lower risk, according to the results. In this well-designed secondary data analysis, attendance at religious services is clearly associated with lower risk of mortality. "We do not know whether the results would hold for men or for younger persons," added Dan German Blazer from Duke University Medical Centre in Durham.

Cancer killing Indian women

Cancer is fast spreading in India and nearly 3.5 lakh women face deaths owing to cancer each year RACHEL V THOMAS, NEW DELHI

A

t a time when cancer is fast spreading its tentacles globally owing to genetic, environment and lifestyle factors, India is also witnessing a steep rise in cancer cases and significantly, more and more women are falling prey to the emperor of all maladies, top health care providers stress. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Ser‘From 12.5 vices (USDHHS), every 13th new canlakh new cancer cer patient in the patients each due to sleep world is an Indian year in India, loss, lack of and breast, cervical exercise, and oral cancers top over seven lakh wrong eating the list in the country. are women’ habits, work-relat“Out of 12.5 lakh ed stress, smoking (1.25 million) new cancer and alcohol abuse are patients each year in India, over seven lakh are women,” says Dr some of the key reasons behind high (Col) Ranga Rao Rangaraju, direc- mortality rates among women with tor (oncology services) at Max Super cancer. Mom’s voice activates many regions in children’s brain NEW YORK: The mother’s voice can lighten up and engage the child’s brain far more than the voices of women they do not know, say researchers including an Indian-origin scientist. The findings showed that brain regions that respond more strongly to the mother’s voice extend beyond regions of hearing. It included regions of emotion and reward processing, social functions, detection of what is personally relevant and face recognition. “Many of our social, language and emotional processes are learned by listening to our mom’s voice,” said lead author Daniel Abrams from Stanford University in the US. “We wanted to know: Is it just auditory and voice-selective areas that respond differently, or is it more

broad in terms of engagement, emotional reactivity and detection of salient stimuli,” added Vinod Menon, professor at Stanford University. The team examined 24 children ages 7 to 12. None had any developmental disorders, and were raised by their biological mothers. The results revealed that the children could identify their own mother with 97 percent accuracy, even after listening to recordings.

riages and child bearing. Some of them opt for hormone replacement therapies which further increases the risk of cancer. Therapies, like controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) -- the hormone treatment required for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) -- must be avoided as it increases estrogen and progesterone levels which has been suspected to increase breast cancer risk. The lifestyle problems have contributed to breast, ovarian and cervix uteri cancers among women, says the ‘Globocan’ project study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

R

unning barefoot is better than running with shoes for your working memory which refers to our ability to recall and process information, according to a study. “Working memory is increasingly recognized as a crucial cognitive skill, and these findings are great news for people looking for a fun way to boost their working memory,” said Tracy Alloway from University of North Florida in the US. The researchers enlisted 72 participants between the ages of 18

and 44, who ran both barefoot and with shoes on at a comfortable, self-selected pace for about 16 minutes. The results revealed a significant increase -- approximately 16 percent -in working memory performance in the barefoot-running condition. “If we take off our shoes and go for a run, we can finish smarter than when we started,” added another researcher Ross Alloway. When running barefoot, one often has to avoid stepping on potentially hurtful objects by using precise foot placement.

Cheers! Red wine can offset effects of high fat diet IANS, NEW YORK

G

iving red wine lovers a new reason to celebrate, researchers have found that an compound in this drink could help counteract the negative impact of high fat/high sugar diets. The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology, point to the health benefit of resveratrol, which occurs naturally in blueberries, raspberries, mulberries, grape skins and consequently in red wine. For the study, J.P. Hyatt from Georgetown University and his team fed a control group of rhesus mon-

keys a healthy diet and another group a high fat/high sugar diet, half of which also received a resveratrol supplement and half did not. Three types of muscles were examined: a “slow” muscle, a “fast” muscle and a “mixed” muscle. The study showed that each muscle responded differently to the diet and to the addition of resveratrol. Of the three lower hind leg muscles analysed for this study, the soleus was the most effected by the high fat/high sugar diet and also most effected by the resveratrol supplements. This may be partially due to the fact that, on a daily basis, it is used much more than

the other two muscles. The plantaris muscle, a 5-10 cm long muscle along the back of the calf, did not have a negative response to the high fat/high sugar diet, but it did have a positive response to the addition of resveratrol. The third muscle was not affected by the diet or addition of resveratrol. While these results are encouraging and there might be a temptation to continue eating a high fat/high sugar diet and simply add a glass of red wine or a cup of fruit to one’s daily consumption, the researchers stressed the importance of a healthy diet.
