A federal judge has ruled that America’s three largest pharmacy chains must pay $650.5m (£539.8m) for helping fuel a painkiller crisis in two Ohio counties.

Nearly half a million deaths were attributed to painkiller overdoses between 1999 and 2019. In court, attorneys for Lake and Trumbull counties - both near Cleveland - put the total financial cost of the crisis at $3.3 billion. Both counties, like other other jurisdictions across the US, have argued that the crisis has put an enormous strain on local resources, social programmes and legal systems. A failure to ensure that prescriptions were valid, their attorneys have argued, created a public nuisance as vast quantities of pills flooded their communities. Between 2012 and 2016, more than 80 million painkillers were reportedly distributed in Trumbull County - about 400 pills per resident. In Lake County, the figure stood at 61 million pills over the same time frame. A US district judge ruled that Lake County will receive $306m over 15 years, while Trumbull County will receive $344m. In the short-term, the three companies have been ordered to pay about $87m to cover the first two years of the plan. The ruling was quickly praised by officials from both counties. Lake County Commissioner John Hamercheck, for example, said that the ruling “marks the start of a new day in our fight to end the opioid crisis”.

President Joe Biden signed into law a landmark tax, health and energy bill Tuesday that takes significant steps toward fulfilling his goal to modernise the US economy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. The vast legislation will lower prescription drug costs for seniors on Medicare, extend federal subsidies for health insurance and reduce the federal deficit. It will also help electric utilities switch to lower-emission sources of energy and encourage Americans to buy electric vehicles through tax credits. Biden signed the bill, which Democrats call the Inflation Reduction Act, in the State Dining Room at the White House. He and his allies cast the success of the legislation as little short of a miracle, given it required more than a year of intense negotiations among congressional Democrats. In his remarks, Biden proclaimed victory as he signed a compromise bill that he called “the biggest step forward on climate ever” and “a godsend to many families” struggling with prescription drug costs. What it does not do, however, is provide workers with many of the other sweeping economic changes that Biden pledged would help Americans earn more and enjoy the comforts of a middle-class life.

US pharmacy chains ordered to pay $650m in Ohio opioids suit

Washington, Aug 18 (IANS) Just a day after losing the Wyoming Republican primary, US Representative Liz Cheney, known to be a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, said that she will mull over a White House run. “That’s a decision that I’m going to make in the coming months,” Xinhua news agency quoted Cheney as saying in an NBC News interview on Wednesday. Cheney, a three-term congresswoman and also the vice chair of the House committee probing the January 2021 Capitol riot, lost to Harriet Hageman, a lawyer who has worked to block federal regulations in Wyoming and who was endorsed by Trump. With 99 per cent of the vote counted on Wednesday, Hageman led Cheney by about 37 percentage points. Cheney had represented the Wyoming congressional district since 2017.

In November, a federal court found Walgreens Boots Alliance, CVS and Walmart helped create an oversupply of addictive opioid pills. The money will be used to help combat the impact of the crisis in Lake and Trumbull counties. The companies plan to appeal. Millions of people in the US have become addicted to opiate-based painkillers such as fentanyl and OxyContin over the last 20 years.

The US has announced that they will begin formal trade negotiations with Taiwan, weeks after a controversial visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The first round of talks are expected to begin in “early fall”, said the Office of US Trade Representative. Their discussion will include talks on trade facilitation, digital trade and anti-corruption standards. Relations between the US and China have been increasingly tense following Ms Pelosi’s visit. The US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade was first unveiled in June, with both sides now saying they had “reached consensus on the negotiating mandate”. “We plan to pursue an ambitious schedule.... that will help build a fairer, more prosperous and resilient 21st century economy,” said Deputy United States Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi in a statement. Trade between the US and Taiwan was worth nearly $106bn (£88bn) in 2020.

It is relatively unusual in Ukraine for a government official to invite you on a short-notice trip. It turns out it is more common for that invitation to come with very little detail. The main reason for that is security - it is not exactly wise to publicise when a minister is going to be somewhere, especially when you are being invaded by another country. We decided to accept, and soon found ourselves at an airfield near Kyiv, where we and other journalists were led onto a Byhelicopter.thispoint we knew our destination was the city of Zaporizhzhia, and the subject was the growing danger from the region’s nuclear power plant further Withinsouth. 30 seconds of the journey starting, I realised why we were offered anti-nausea tablets before taking off. To stay undetected, the pilot keeps the helicopter around 10 metres off the ground, occasionally hurdling over electric powerlines. There are endless fields of sunflowers. Some are in full bloom, some are wilting, past their best. Regardless, the harvest is fast approaching. Then there is the dense woodlandthousands upon thousands of towering trees which come so close to touching the skids of the chopper. You are left under no illusion of Ukraine’s vast and rich landscape. After landing in Zaporizhzhia, you are struck by two things: the more industrious skyline in comparison to Kyiv, as well as the humidity. We end up at a supermarket car park where emergency workers are dressed in yellow hazmat suits. They are practising cleaning drills in the event of a radioactive contamination.

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday showed the unemployment rate fell to 3.4 per cent last month as employment and hours worked both decreased at the same time.

The July reference period coincided with the winter school holidays, worker absences associated with Covid-19 and other illnesses, and further flooding events in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state with Sydney as the capital city. In line with the fall in employment, and continued illnessrelated worker absences, hours worked also fell by 0.8 per cent in July. “In addition to people taking annual leave around the winter school holidays, there were also around 750,000 people working fewer hours than usual due to being sick in July 2022, around double the usual number we see during the middle of winter,” Jarvis said.

Rishi Sunak ‘could head straight to US’ if he loses battle for UK PM London, Aug 18 (IANS) Speculation is mounting about Rishi Sunak’s future as another poll showed Liz Truss with an unassailable lead among Tory members in the race for UK Prime Minister, the media reported. Some MPs are predicting that the former chancellor will opt to leave the Parliament if he loses the battle for Prime Minister, although allies insist he is ‘not going anywhere’, Daily Mail reported. Senior Conservatives believe Sunak has ‘burned his boats’ during the contest, due to come to a conclusion on September 5, and is unlikely to be offered a job he could accept, the report said. Congress says exclusion from BJP Parliamentary Board shows party “not in mood to keep him in key posts” ahead of 2023 state polls; BJP says “no worry”

Bhopal: After Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was excluded from the BJP’s top decision-making body, Madhya Pradesh’s political circles are drawing a straight line between his exit and the state elections due next year. “We used to think that he will move to the Centre after 2023 but now the party is not in a mood to keep him in key positions,” said Congress’s Govind Singh, Leader of Opposition in the assembly. State BJP leaders have said there isn’t anything to worry about for him. “Is there any other chief minister on the BJP Parliamentary Board? No. He would have something to worry about if there was any other CM included,” said BJP spokesperson Divya Gupta. The Congress — alleging that the state government is corrupt hence shaky — insists the exclusion is “a clear sign to Shivraj Chouhan from the top”. “There are many leaders in BJP who feel they can replace him now,” said Govind Singh, “Let’s wait and watch.” Mr Chouhan, a prominent face from among the Other Backward Classes (OBC), and the longest serving BJP chief minister of any state with 15 years in the chair, hasn’t said anything beyond congratulating the new board.

This time, Sri Lanka has said the ship will have to keep its Automatic Identification System (AIS) switched on, and it’s is not allowed to carry out

5India’s concerns have been focused on the Hambantota port, which was leased to China Merchant Port Holdings for 99 years after Sri Lanka was unable to repay loans taken for its development. This led to constant fears of its use for military purposes. China, which is engaged in a border standoff with India, is Sri Lanka’s main creditor with investment in infrastructure. India, however, has been Sri Lanka’s essentialsupply lifeline in its festering economic crisis.

“When I became a billionaire in 2008, my father wasn’t interested in my net worth but in how much I was going to give away,” Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, India’s best known stock investor, had said nearly a decade ago. His stock picks had earned him a cult following, and his humble nature was praised by many. It was not long ago that Jhunjhunwala’s simple dressing sense became a source for many memes after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Son of an income-tax officer, Jhunjhunwala never forgot his roots no matter how much wealth he had accumulated over the years. “I would be driving the same car and having the same food even with 85% less wealth than now. Friends and the beneficiaries of these organisations have also highlighted that Jhunjhunwala didn’t just believe in only signing a cheque, but was also actively involved in these causes. He also had holdings in Tata Communications, Bilcare, Federal Bank and Aptech. His latest venture was an airline – Akasa Air, which took its maiden flight exactly a week before his death on August 7. A Chartered Accountant by qualification and training, he was 62 and is survived by his wife Rekha and three children. “Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was indomitable. 2China, using the ship’s high-tech capabilities, will be in a position to gauge the range and accuracy of the Indian missiles, if tested. The ship is scheduled to remain at the port for “replenishment purposes” till August 22. It left China on July 14 and did not enter a single port before Hambantota, sailing with zero replenishment for over a month.

Ram temple opening timed perfectly for BJP’s 2024 campaign

A charya Satyendra Das, chief priest of Ayodhya Ram temple, told IANS that the construction of the temple will be completed by December 2023 and Ram Lalla will be seated there in January 2024. “Ram Lalla was kept inside a tarpaulin and worshipped there for 28 years since the disputed structure was demolished on December 16, 1992. After that, on November 9, 2019, when the Supreme Court decision came, it was felt that it is a big day, as no one will now be able to stop Ram Lalla’s temple from being built,” Das told IANS. The priest stated that the model of Ayodhya’s development and the model for the construction of the temple have been made ready together. “There are three fairs of Sawan, Kartik and Chait in Ayodhya, for which lakhs of people come and visit the local temples, and the traders and shopkeepers earn from these fairs. After the construction of Ram Lalla’s temple, lakhs of people will come here every day and the development will be even more on its own,” he said. “The governments that came till now saw Ram Lalla as a toy. But Narendra Modi took cognizance of it, and the court gave its verdict within 40 days. The credit for this will go to Modi ji and Yogi (Adityanath) ji,” Das told IANS. “Every month, Yogi ji reviews the work being done in Ayodhya. The administration makes the arrangements now, which was not done earlier,” Das said. Ayodhya prepares for 3-fold increase in tourist arrivals with brand new look A railway station that is a replica of the Ram temple, an international airport equipped with modern amenities, wide roads that will allow easy access to temples, improved facilities for boarding and lodging and, of course, the much-awaited Ram temple. Ayodhya, till a few years ago, was known mainly for the Babri demolition and the ensuing legal battle for a temple. Today, it is a city that is poised to become one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the coming years -- one that will attract not only domestic but also foreign tourists in large numbers. The construction of Ram temple that is being simultaneously marked by rapid development of the holy city is paving the way for a new Ayodhya. The holy city is all set for an expansion that will be known as ‘Navya Ayodhya’. The new township will spread across 1500 acres and will have guest houses of about two dozen states. The new township will be developed as a Vastufriendly Vedic city. The New Ayodhya will be having guest houses for 5 countries including Korea, monasteries, and over 100 plots for different sects, communities, and volunteer organisations. The focal point of the holy city, however, will remain the upcoming Ram temple, arguably the largest Hindu temple in the Accordingworld. to a conservative estimate of the tourist department, Ayodhya will be witnessing a three-fold increase in the tourists’ footfall, in the next one decade. Over 6.8 crore of people will be travelling to Ram’s birthplace by 2030, the statistical analysis suggests. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is leaving no stone unturned to make Ayodhya one of the best and top-notch cities across the globe. Following the Supreme Court’s decision in favour of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya in 2019, all the development schemes have been fast-tracked by the Yogi Officialsgovernment.have been asked to complete all projects by 2023 when the sanctum sanctorum of the temple opens for Yogidevotees.Adityanath promises to make Ayodhya an eco-friendly city and all departments are working in tandem to ensure Accordingthis.to officials, entry points will have electronic vehicles for ferrying devotees to the Ram temple. The 2024 elections are perfectly timed with the completion of the grand Ram temple and the various developmental projects earmarked for the holy city will also be near completion by then. Ayodhya, therefore, will be the perfect showcase of BJP’s achievement -- both in spiritual and developmental terms. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who has already positioned himself as a torch-bearer of Hindutva, will undoubtedly tout Ayodhya as a major “Ayodhyaachievement.willhavethe much-promised temple by the time general elections are held. Yogi Adityanath is pushing all developmental projects hard and this will present a new Ayodhya to the people. Without doubt, this will be our biggest and best report card for the 2024 elections,” said a senior BJP functionary. There is no doubt that with a highly fragmented opposition, Modi’s continuing charisma and Yogi Adityanath’s Hindutva pull, the focus on Ayodhya will only add to the BJP’s strength in the general elections. According to a senior official, Yogi Adityanath has visited Ayodhya innumerable times during the past five and a half years and is completely clued in with the progress of development in the holy city. A senior official in the chief minister’s secretariat said, “Yogi Adityanath takes keen personal interest in matters related to Ayodhya. The annual ‘Deepotsav’ event has got bigger with every passing year and the renovation of Ghats has given an ethereal look to Ayodhya. He reviews the development work in Ayodhya at regular intervals and does not take excuses for lapses.”

The BJP, at the national level, does not promote the Hindu agenda in a blatant manner but Yogi Adityanath makes no bones about his Hindu leanings and it is this that endears him to his voters. He is pushing Ayodhya to the centre stage of politics.

With temple coming up, development model for Ayodhya also ready: Acharya Satyendra Das Acharya Satyendra Das, chief priest of Ayodhya Ram temple, told IANS that the construction of the temple will be completed by December 2023 and Ram Lalla will be seated there in January 2024.

New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan were dropped from the BJP’s highest decision-making body today in an organisational shakeup that saw Devendra Fadnavis and BS Yediyurappa score after recent setbacks. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who led the BJP to an unprecedented second term in the state, is a glaring exclusion after buzz that he would be rewarded with a seat at the decision-making table. The party’s rejigged parliamentary board, which has six new faces - BS Yediyurappa, Sarbananda Sonowal, K Laxman, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Sudha Yadav and Satyanarayan Jatiya - signals a generational and political shift in the highest tiers of the BJP in the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah era. The parliamentary board is the top body in the BJP and decides on chief ministers, state chiefs and other key roles. Nitin Gadkari’s omission from the important committee is seen as the biggest shocker in this revamp. Mr Gadkari, a senior minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, is a former BJP chief and the party has traditionally kept its former presidents in the decision-making process. Because of his deep connect with the party’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mr Gadkari had stayed put despite the pot-shots he had frequently aimed at his own Defencegovernment.Minister Rajnath Singh, also a former BJP chief, has made a re-entry into the parliamentary board. Devendra Fadnavis has been included in the election committee - a big boost after he was forced to accept a downgrade to Deputy Chief Minister when the BJP came to power in Maharashtra with Shiv Sena rebel Eknath Shinde. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also been dropped from the parliamentary board, in a huge blow to the man who has been Chief Minister for 20 years.

A social activist and author, Mr Chandran is accused of sexually harassing a young writer at a camp in Nandi Beach on February 8, 2020. In his bail application, 74-year-old Mr Chandran produced photographs of his accuser in court. Arjun KapoorA rjun Kapoor, who has been on the receiving end of brutal trolling quite a few times, in a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, opened up about the rise of boycott trends and he said that the only way to deal with it is to be united as an industry. The boycott trend began with Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha. Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan and Hrithik Roshan’s Vikram Vedha (which is yet to release), were also the focus of similar outrage. “I think we made a mistake by being silent about it and that was our decency but people have started taking advantage of that. I think we made a mistake by thinking that our work will speak for ourselves. You know you don’t always need to get your hand dirty but I guess we tolerated it a lot and now people have made this a habit. We need to togethercomeanddo something about it because what people write about us or the hashtags that trend, are far away from reality,” Arjun Kapoor told Bollywood Hungama. Arjun Kapoor rightly flagged the cancel culture as “unfair” and he said, “Ab zyada hone laga hai...unfair hai (This has started happening a lot now. It is unfair).” The actor added how the audience used to be excited about new releases earlier but now things have changed and for worse. “On Friday morning, the spark in people, the euphoria for a new film, the excitement in people, and the shine of the industry is coming down. Lagatar keechad uchaalte jayenge toh nayi gaadi bhi thodi si shine kho degi na? Humne toh kaafi keechad jhel liya hai pichle kuch saalon mein kyunkiwe have turned a blind eye on it. From Big B, Salman to Ayushmann and Varun, coming months will be a test of star power H indi cinema of late seems to be in trouble as Bollywood’s big-ticket releases such as ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Shamshera’, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’ have failed to impress the audience. Nevertheless, a motley bunch of films starring names such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon are lined up for release in the coming months. However, the milliondollar question looming over the furrowed brows of distributors is: Will these movies ensure the return of ‘achche din’ for Bollywood? The first big film, which is slated to hit the screens is Ayan Mukerji’s trilogy ‘Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva’ starring newly wed couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt along with Amitabh Bachchan and Nagarjuna. The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on September 9. ‘Brahmastra’ is a three-part film franchise and the beginning of India’s first original universe, the Astraverse. It is a new original cinematic universe inspired by deeply rooted concepts and tales in Indian mythology but set in the modern world. During a conversation with IANS, Ayan had earlier said that with ‘Brahmastra’ he has put so much in the film for so long that he has a “very peaceful confidence when it comes to this film”.

Next in line is Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan-starrer ‘Vikram Vedha’, a neo-noir action thriller, which is a remake of a Tamil hit film helmed by Pushkar and Gayathri, who are also directing the Hindi remake. Set to release on September 30, the film tells the story of a tough police officer who sets out to track down a menacing gangster. It also features Radhika Apte in a prominent role.

“I fell in love with the script. Here was a character for which I would have to unlearn so much,” recalls the actor. Two years on, she is ready with the second season of the political drama that sees her as Rani Bharti, a homemaker who is thrust into politics. The upcoming edition sees Rani confidently take on political rivals. “She is no longer as lost as she was in the first season. People connected with Rani because they saw themselves in her. She is slightly savvier now, but she is still a woman in a man’s world.” Becoming Rani for the SonyLIV series has taught her more than a few things, says the actor. “It has empowered me as a woman. If she doesn’t know something, she is able to articulate that. As women, when we don’t know something, we keep quiet instead of asking questions. But Rani gave me her sense of curiosity. Just because I don’t know something, doesn’t mean I am stupid. I didn’t have that confidence [earlier].”

The multi-season series will be based on Indian historian-author Ramachandra Guha’s books, Gandhi Before India and Gandhi — The Years that Changed the World. It’s not surprising when Nair begins the chat by admitting that getting Guha on board was not easy. “I pursued Mr Guha for three years,” he smiles, before recounting, “I first reached out to him in July 2019. I met him without reading the book in its entirety, and he sent me back. Then I read the whole book, and went back to him. I reached out to him again during the pandemic. “Must Be Developed Nation Within 25 Years” - PM Sets 2047 Goal

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi today while addressing the nation from the Red Fort laid out a vision for India to become a developed nation by 2047, his past promises for India in 2022 resurfaced on social media. Goals set by him for the India of 2022 regarding housing, farmers’ income and other issues were discussed, with some saying the goalpost has been shifted to 2047 without any accounting of promises that were made for 2022. While interacting with beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) in June 2018, the PM had said the government was working to ensure a home for every Indian by 2022. Wait for 5G is over, India’s ‘Techade’ is here: PM Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the country’s wait for the 5G technology is over and the benefits of ‘Digital India’ will reach every village soon. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 75th Independence Day, Modi said that India’s ‘Techade’ is here with 5G and local thrust on semiconductor and mobile phone manufacturing. “We are bringing revolution through ‘Digital India’ to the grassroots levels and soon, every village will be connected digitally as we usher in the 5G era,” Modi said during his speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

As India celebrates its Independence Day, wishes are pouring in not just from across the world but space a well. Indian-American astronaut Raja Chari greeted the people of the country by posting a photo of the Indian national flag at the International Space Station (ISS) with a message for Indians living abroad. New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Addressing the nation for the 9th time from the historic ramparts of Red Fort on the occasion of 75th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for moving India forward with five pledges to achieve the dreams by 2047. PM Modi said that India must be a developed nation in 25 years. As we enter the Amrit Kaal, we must resolve to fulfil the dreams of India’s freedom fighters. “We must resolve to work towards a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) and remove any vestiges of colonialism from any corner or in our hearts,” said the Prime Minister. “In the coming years, we have to focus on ‘Panchpran’ (5 pledges). First: to move forward with bigger resolutions and resolve of developed India; second: to erase all traces of servitude; third: be proud of our legacy; fourth: the strength of unity; and fifth: the duties of citizens that also includes the PM and CMs,” said PM Modi. “Working towards a Viksit Bharat, remember the time before Independence... yes, people had different methods of working but the goal was the same and the goal was big - the freedom of India. In this Amrit Kaal we have to come together and work towards another big goal of a Viksit Bharat,” he said.

“Two big challenges we face today -- corruption and ‘Parivaarvaad’ or nepotism. Corruption is hollowing the country like a termite. We have to fight it. We have to also raise awareness against nepotism (Parivaarwaad) to realise the strength of our institutions, and eradicate from the system and to take the country forward on the basis of merit,” he said. Modi said, “In the past government, the people have looted banks and run away but now their properties are being confiscated and there is a process to bring them back and get all the money.”

Audio Leak Of Karnataka Minister: “We’re Managing Government, Not Running It”

Hindu Mahasabha leader Yogendra Varma said, “We had organised a Tiranga Yatra on Independence Day and the rally travelled across the district. All prominent Hindu leaders participated in it. We had put up photographs of several revolutionaries and Godse was one of them.” He further said that Godse was compelled to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi only because of the policies that he pursued. “Godse fought his own case and the government should make public all that he said in court. The government does not want the people to know why Gandhi was assassinated. Some of the policies of Gandhi were anti-Hindu. During partition, 30 lakh Hindus and Muslims were killed and Gandhi was responsible for this,” he stated.

Bengaluru: A Karnataka minister’s comments, leaked to the press early this morning, caused new embarrassment to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who today confirmed that the comments are authentic but taken out of context. “We are not running the government, we are just managing it,” Karnataka Law Minister JC Madhuswamy is heard saying in the audio clip. The comments come amid speculation that Mr Bommai, aged 62, will be replaced mid-term by the BJP on account of growing dissatisfaction with his governance. Five days ago, however, a senior leader said that the BJP will seek another term - the election is due next year with Mr Bommai remaining very much in charge. That assurance was issued by BS Yediyurappa, the Lingayat strongman who chose Mr Bommai as his replacement when he had to step down in 2021 for various reasons including his age, dissidence in the party. Mr Yediyurappa claimed that party boss Amit Shah, whose recent visit to Karnataka scaled up talk of a possible exit for Mr Bommai, had confirmed that the Chief Minister is not in danger of losing his job. “Everything is good, there’s no trouble,” the Chief Minister said today. But another senior minister has already called for the law minister’s resignation. “I will speak to all concerned, and settle the issue,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the damaging comments were made “in the context of the bank demanding interest.” Munirathna, a minister in the government, disagrees. “If he thinks that we are managing, he should step down immediately as the Law Minister of Karnataka. He is a part of the government. He is a part of every cabinet meeting and the decision that’s made. If he has made that statement, that means he is also party to it. Being in a ministerial position, it is irresponsible of him to make such a statement,” he said.

In English, the powerful thought provoking documentary explores and sheds light on this multi-faceted sacred symbol that carries varying meanings in different parts of the world. In the Westen milleu. the mere mention of the word ‘Swastika’ can evoke strong sentiments due to its false association with the barbaric persecution and genocide of millions in Nazi Germany. This lingers on even though Hitler never used the term Swastika in his own writings-only the word ‘Hakenkreuz’ (German for ‘hooked cross’) On the other hand, over 2 billion people worldwide consider the Swastika a sacred symbol of peace and well being. This is not an aberration or ignorance of its Western context, as the result of unbroken religious practices and deeply held beliefs ingrained over several thousand years.

Business And Law Enforcement Team Up To Protect From Counterfeit Goods

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are joining forces to educate students, parents, and teachers about the dangers of counterfeit goods and how to spot them, just in time as kids prepare to go back to school. This joint effort highlights the impacts counterfeit goods have on the economy as well as the health and safety of consumers and includes ten tips to “Shop Smart” for back-to-school basics. COVID vaccines and boosters have reduced the threat of COVID, allowing many people to gather, travel, and celebrate with more peace of mind. Vaccines and boosters provide the best protection against the worst outcomes of COVID, yet people still have many questions around boosters. As of August 10, CDC data showed that while Asian Americans were among the highest boosted group—with nearly 70 percent of those eligible having received their first booster doses—only 14 percent of fully vaccinated Asian Americans 50 years or older have gotten their second booster. First booster rates are still low for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, with less than half of the population age 5 and older receiving their first booster doses. To that end, the We Can Do This COVID-19 Public Education Campaign has engaged community-based organizations as partners to increase vaccine and booster uptake across the country. A partnership between Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM) and Empowering Pacific Islander Communities (EPIC) has humanized the numbers behind those lost to COVID-19 with a curated community exhibit titled, Toe Fo’i: The Return. Through the power of storytelling from 6 Pasifika artists, Toe Fo’i: The Return evokes a narrative that “reminds visitors the stories of those lost are the stories of those who survived,” says Kiki Rivera, PIEAM Guest Curator and EPIC Storyteller.

The defendants imported the EcoAirDoctor badge from Japan and misrepresented it as an air purifier so that it was not subjected to EPA inspection. This aside, the shipment was also undervalued on import documents by over $500,000.

W alking after a meal, conventional wisdom says, helps clear your mind and aids in digestion. Scientists have also found that going for a 15-minute walk after a meal can reduce blood sugar levels, which can help ward off complications such as Type 2 diabetes. But, as it turns out, even just a few minutes of walking can activate these benefits.

A new paper suggests that it takes far less exercise than was previously thought to lower blood sugar after eating.

A team of US researchers have developed a flexible, stretchable computing chip that processes information by mimicking the human brain.

“If you can get real-time information on blood pressure, for instance, this device could very intelligently make decisions about when to adjust the patient’s blood pressure medication levels,” said Wang. That kind of automatic feedback loop is already used by some implantable insulin pumps, he added.

In a meta-analysis, recently published in the journal Sports Medicine, researchers looked at the results of seven studies that compared the effects of sitting versus standing or walking on measures of heart health, including insulin and blood sugar levels. They found that light walking after a meal, in increments of as little as two to five minutes, had a significant impact in moderating blood sugar levels. “Each small thing you do will have benefits, even if it is a small step,” said Dr. Kershaw Patel, a preventive cardiologist at Houston Methodist Hospital who was not involved in the study. Very light walking reduces blood sugar levels. In five of the studies that the paper evaluated, none of the participants had pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes. The remaining two studies looked at people with and without such illnesses. Participants were asked to either stand or walk for two to five minutes every 20 to 30 minutes over the course of a full day.

Just 2 Minutes of Walking After a Meal Is Surprisingly Good for You their blood sugar levels. “Moving even a little bit is worthwhile and can lead to measurable changes, as these studies showed, in your health markers,” Dr. Euan Ashley, a cardiologist at Stanford University who was not associated with the study, said. Mini-walks are more practical during the workday.

Wang and his team turned to polymers, which can be used to build semiconductors and electrochemical transistors but also have the ability to stretch and bend. They assembled polymers into a device that allowed the artificial-intelligencebased analysis of health data. Rather than working like a typical computer, the chip, which is called a neuromorphic computing chip, functions more like a human brain that is able to both store and analyse data in an integrated way. To test the utility of their new device, Wang’s group used it to analyse electrocardiogram (ECG) data representing the electrical activity of the human heart. They trained the device to classify ECGs into five categories -- healthy or four types of abnormal signals. Then, they tested it on new ECGs. Whether or not the chip was stretched or bent, they showed, it could accurately classify the Moreheartbeats.work is needed to test the power of the device in deducing patterns of health and disease. But eventually, it could be used either to send patients or clinicians alerts, or to automatically tweak medications.

Mr. Buffey, whose research focuses on physical activity interventions in workplace environments, noted that a mini-walk of two to three minutes is more practical during the workday. People “are not going to get up and run on a treadmill or run around the office,” he said, but they could get some coffee or even go for a stroll down the hallway. For people working from home, he suggested a short walk around the block between Zoom meetings or after lunch. The more we normalize mini-walks during the workday, Mr. Buffey said, the more feasible they will be. “If you are in a rigid environment, that’s when the difficulties may come.” If you cannot take those few minutes to take a walk, Dr. Ashley said, “standing will get you some of the way there.” The benefits of physical activity are never all or nothing, Dr. Patel said, but instead exist on a continuum. “It’s a gradual effect of more activity, better health,” he said. “Each incremental step, each incremental stand or brisk walk appears to have a benefit.”

A team of US researchers have developed a flexible, stretchable computing chip that processes information by mimicking the human brain. The device, described in the journal Matter, aims to change the way health data is processed. “With this work we’ve bridged wearable technology with artificial intelligence and machine learning to create a powerful device which can analyse health data right on our own bodies,” said Sihong Wang, a materials scientist and Assistant Professor of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. Currently, getting an in-depth profile about your health requires a visit to a hospital or clinic. In the future, Wang said, people’s health could be tracked continuously by wearable electronics that can detect diseases even before symptoms appear. Wang’s team designed a chip that could collect data from multiple biosensors and draw conclusions about a person’s health using cutting-edge machine learning approaches. Importantly, they wanted it to be wearable on the body and integrate seamlessly with skin. “With a smart watch, there’s always a gap,” said Wang. “We wanted something that can achieve very intimate contact and accommodate the movement of skin.”

All seven studies showed that just a few minutes of light-intensity walking after a meal were enough to significantly improve blood sugar levels compared to, say, sitting at a desk or plopping down on the couch. When participants went for a short walk, their blood sugar levels rose and fell more gradually. For people with diabetes, avoiding sharp fluctuations in blood sugar levels is a critical component in managing their illness. It’s also thought that sharp spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels can contribute to developing Type 2 diabetes.Standing also helped lower blood sugar levels, although not to the degree that light walking did. “Standing did have a small benefit,” Aidan Buffey, a graduate student at the University of Limerick in Ireland and an author of the paper, said. Compared to sitting or standing, “light-intensity walking was a superior intervention,” he said. That’s because light walking requires more active engagement of muscles than standing and uses the fuel from food at a time when there is a lot of it circulating in the bloodstream. “Your muscles will soak up some of that excess glucose,” said Jessie Inchauspé, author of the book “Glucose Revolution: The Life-Changing Power of Balancing Your Blood Sugar.” Walking within 60 to 90 minutes after eating delivers the best results. Although light walking at any time is good for your health, a short walk within 60 to 90 minutes of eating a meal can be especially useful in minimizing blood sugar spikes, as that is when blood sugar levels tend to peak. Ms. Inchauspé also recommended getting up to do housework or finding other ways to move your body. This short amount of activity will also enhance other dietary changes that people may be making to help control

From the air that we breathe to the food we eat, we are exposed to a number of toxins in our daily lives. Though we can’t fully control this exposure, we can somewhat manage it by making certain lifestyle changes, which include eliminating some things and also introducing many others into our everyday routine. Eat local and seasonal When we eat local and seasonal fruits and vegetables, we accept what nature has endowed upon that particular region and the things that can be grown there without altering the soil profile. Go natural From shampoo to perfume, we apply a lot of chemical-laden products to our hair and body. But, they should ideally be replaced with natural ones to reduce toxin exposure. Gadgets “Recent studies have proven how spending more time with gadgets elevates stress and eventually, affects immunity Exercise Regular exercise helps flush out toxins from our bodies. “Our daily exposure to toxins is way more than what we think.
