Between the city of Sheffield and the town of Rotherham lies Attercliffe Common, a strip of land which follows the path of the river Don, developed over the past century as an industrial corridor home to the region’s famous steel working industry. Over the past couple of decades however, this industrial heartland has seen a progressive transformation; factories replaced with commercial units and steel yards transformed into retail and entertainment parks. This industrial corridor has become what I shall refer to as ‘The Don Valley Strip’.
In this essay, I aim to explore the relevance and accuracy of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s work on architectural symbology in the context of the 21st century, using The Don Valley Strip as a case study in much the same manner as they used the Las Vegas Strip in the 1960’s. Through particular focus on image and movement, I will apply their analytical techniques to explore whether their America based theories can be transferred into a modern British context.
