“A Tribute to Hispanic Women” To Our Prospective Sponsor: For over a century, communities around the world have gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th. This special day commemorates the important roles and contributions that women make in our in communities, regardless of race, education, age, or religion. One March 6th, 2014, Sucesos Newspaper and Solo Mujeres Magazine will honor Hispanic women in Houston who have made their mark in areas such as politics, business, mass media, education, arts, science, literature and sports. During our 7th Annual Luncheon, we are proud to present the “Woman of the Year” award to the Honorable Texas Supreme Court Judge Mrs. Eva Guzman, who has demonstrated a deep commitment and transparency to justice and ethics in her extensive and distinguished career.

Our 2014 luncheon will be slightly different from previous celebrations. We will pay tribute to Latina Leaders in our community in a special POWER Forum. This amazing group of “trailblazers” will share their personal journey and empower others to succeed. To impact future generations of trailblazers, we will be extending invitations to local high school students to attend who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and commitment to higher learning.

“A Tribute to Hispanic Women” Who is our Woman of the Year 2014 Justice Eva Guzman has served on the Supreme Court of Texas since October 2009. She was elected to a six year term in November 2010.

A three-time gubernatorial appointee, Justice Guzman moved swiftly through the ranks of the Texas judiciary. She began her judicial service in 1999, when she was appointed to the 309th Family District Court of Harris County by then Gov. George W. Bush. She was elected to that bench in 2000. In 2001, Governor Rick Perry appointed her to the Court of Appeals for the Fourteenth District of Texas at Houston where she served until her appointment to the Supreme Court of Texas. As a trial judge, Justice Guzman disposed of more than 5,000 cases and as an appellate court justice, she ruled on thousands of civil and criminal appeals and authored hundreds of published opinions. A respected member of the Texas judiciary, Justice Guzman consistently receives high marks in judicial-evaluation polls.

Justice Guzman has been recognized by many law and community organizations for her service on and off the bench. She received the SER 2013 Community Leader award. She has previously been honored by Texas Women Lawyers and the Travis County Women Lawyers Association with their prestigious Pathfinder award. The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas honored Justice Guzman in 2012 with its Latina Trailblazer award. Justice Guzman has twice been named one of the “101 Most Influential Latino Leaders” by Latino Leaders magazine, a national publication. Hispanic Business Magazine also recognized Justice Guzman’s contributions and professional accomplishments by naming her one of its “Top 100 Influentials 2010 in Government.” Justice Guzman has also been honored by the Hispanic National Bar Association as “Latina Judge of the Year.” In addition, the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas foundation also has recognized Justice Guzman for her many contributions and awarded her its “2009 Judge of the Year award.” Two Houston law-enforcement organizations have selected Justice Guzman as “Appellate Judge of the Year” in prior years. She is also very proud to have been recognized in 2006 by Texas Executive Women as a “Woman on the Move”.

Before taking the bench, Justice Guzman enjoyed a successful 10-year career in private law practice. She holds a BBA from the University of Houston and a law degree from South Texas College of Law and has recently completed her first year of coursework in the Judicial Studies LLM program at Duke University School of Law. Justice Guzman grew up in Houston and has been a resident for more than 35 years. She and her husband, Houston Police Sergeant Tony Guzman, have one daughter, Melanie Alexis who is a senior at Harvard University.
