The Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak pickup truck concept made its world debut at the New York International Auto Show. Named after a species of tree that is native to the Pacific Coast in the U.S. (and grows up to 135 feet high in height), the Atlas Tanoak is the first pickup based on Volkswagen’s MQB or modular transverse matrix architecture. Powered by a 276-horsepower V6 FSI® gasoline engine, the Atlas Tanoak uses an efficient eight-speed automatic transmission and the 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system. Although there are currently no production plans for the Atlas Tanoak, Volkswagen is keen

to gauge the reactions of buyers and media, since pickup trucks are one of the biggest volume segments in the U.S. The MQB architecture is one of the most innovative and flexible technical platforms in the automotive world, spanning vehicles from the European Polo subcompact all the way up to the Atlas midsize SUV. The Atlas Tanoak concept shows that MQB can potentially stretch even further. The Tanoak concept is 214.1 inchAtlas Tanoak Page 4

A unique feature of this pickup is a rail that is mounted on the pickup bed. Normally, the rail is fixed by the back of the cab, but it can slide the length of the bed and thus doubles as a carrier for things like canoes and ladders.

Atlas Tanoak From Front Cover es long, some 15.8 inches longer than the Atlas, which makes it a large midsize pickup by U.S. standards. The concept vehicle is 79.9 inches wide and 72.6 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 128.3 inches, 11 inches longer than the Atlas seven-seater. The body of the concept vehicle has been raised nearly 2 inches compared to the Atlas SUV, yielding ground clearance of 9.8 inches. Designed as a dual-cab, five-seater, the Atlas Tanoak pickup has a cargo bed that is 64.1 inches long, 57.1 wide (50.4 inches between the wheel wells) and 20.9 inches high. This allows for easy transport of cargo such as bikes or surfboards with the tailgate in place, and ATVs and dirt bikes with the tailgate down. The spare wheel is located under the cargo bed, making it accessible even when fully loaded. A unique feature of this pickup is a rail that is mounted on the pickup bed. Normally, the rail is fixed by the back of the cab, but it can slide the length of the bed and thus doubles as a carrier for things like canoes and ladders. Drivetrain The Atlas Tanoak concept uses Volkswagen’s 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 276 horsepower and 266 poundfeet of torque. The engine provides power to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and the 4MOTION® all4

wheel-drive system with Active Control. This lets the driver select from various onand off-road modes within seconds for optimal grip on dry, wet, slick or unpaved surfaces. For tougher off-road use, the pickup also has a mode that provides a low-range gear reduction. Either onor off-road, the Atlas Tanoak rides on newly designed 20-inch wheels that wear 275/55 tires. The vehicle will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds. Design Although the Atlas Tanoak is based on the production SUV, the pickup is completely redesigned. Up to the B-pillar, there are similarities, but the frontal treatment is more rugged, in keeping with a pickup truck’s mission. The headlights and front bumper, using round LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), were redesigned and extend into the side profile. Additional redesigned components include: the engine hood that is significantly raised in middle; the entire grille unit including LED headlights; and the bumper. Very rugged underbody protection that integrates a centrally mounted winch and carabiner are also featured. The designers worked the Atlas logo into the front end, and integrated an animated lighting display. When the Atlas Tanoak is opened, the white VW logo gradually brightens. From there, the white light runs over the two crossbars of the grille and into the headlight surAugust 2018

rounds. As soon as activation of the lighting strips has reached the headlights, the LEDs of the two strips in front briefly ‘swipe’ out from the logo and back until the LED headlights and distinctive, narrow, six-sided LED DRLs in the bumper activate. Other special design features for the pickup include wheelarch extensions, made from rugged plastic that incorporate integrated side marker lights, and high-gloss 20-inch wheels that use contrasting aluminum and black coloring. The Tanoak takes an entirely different path than the Atlas SUV from the B-pillars back. The rear doors of the dual cab are not very noticeable at first glance, because the handles are integrated into the C-pillars and are barely visible. The dual cab and its window surfaces emphasize the vehicle’s length. Another conspicuous departure from the SUV are the rear fenders, which have more strongly flared surfaces. The cab and bed are painted in ‘Red Earth’. Typical for a pickup, the back of the Tanoak is defined by its low-hinged tailgate. When opened, the 64.1-inch cargo bed is lengthened by an additional 26.1 inches, effectively extending it to 90.2 inches. The Atlas logo is integrated into the tailgate, which also features distinctive wrap-around, animated lighting. Red LED strips on the upper and lower areas of the tailgate transition into three-dimensional LED taillights on the sides. The VW logo www.IneedOEMparts.com

is illuminated in white, and there is a white LED stripe in the cargo bed rail, which, when activated, illuminates the cargo bed. The lower part of the rear body is designed both as an underbody shield and a diffuser. Above each exhaust tailpipe sits a rugged towhook. Interior The Atlas Tanoak concept is designed as a very spacious five-seater. Sporty, contoured seats are used in front, which offer very good lateral support during tough off-road duty. The same applies to the rear seating, with the passengers in

the second row sitting on individual seats that match the ergonomic and design quality of the front row. The instruments, center console, and multifunction steering wheel are heavily redesigned from the Atlas SUV. The majority of functions, including the air conditioning, are operated digitally in the Tanoak. The touchscreen infotainment system is positioned high up for easy operation, almost alongside the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit. Both these screens and the controls for the air conditioning merge to form a digitalized cockpit environment. Ambient lighting integrated into the

instrument panel and the roofline console immerse the interior in yellow or blue light at night, depending on whether the vehicle is in Off-road or City mode. Arranged on the center console between the driver and front passenger are the newly designed shifter grip for the eight-speed automatic transmission and the redesigned 4MOTION with Active Control, with mode selection via a metallic slider. It was intentionally designed to be very sturdy, so that it can be operated everyday by people who are used to driving a pickup, even while wearing work gloves.n

B.C. ‘Online’ Small Claims Tribunal: Dealership Must Pay Competitor’s Bill Over RAV4 Fix By John Huetter A British Columbia small claims court earlier this year ruled that a dealership who failed to disclose a faulty wheel bearing had to reimburse the customer for the cost of repairing it at a competitor. The Canadian case raises several issues which might arise in disputes between American customers, collision repairers and insurers, and we felt it was worth showing both country’s readers for a look at how it was handled up north. We also felt the decision by “Canada’s first online tribunal” highlighted a fascinating way for U.S. jurisdictions to handle small-claims disputes of the kind frequently encountered between insurers, customers and repairers. The case:

tribunal, Day-Lite says that upon closer examination it was clear that the front right wheel was badly worn and needed to be replaced,” Lopez wrote. “DayLite says it advised the applicant to do so as soon as possible, as driving was dangerous because the worn bearing could cause the wheel to seize and the driver to lose control of the car.” Jerome asked the dealership to fix the car Sept. 8, 2017, but it refused “on the basis that the car passed its inspection and the bearing was a maintenance issue rather than a safety issue,” Lopez wrote. However, it offered to give him his money back for the RAV4 in the form of a store credit, but Jerome declined, saying he wanted a RAV4 and the dealership was out of them. “I find the applicant was entitled

Richard Jerome bought a used 2009 Toyota RAV4 from Maple Ridge Volkswagen for about $16,000 on Sept. 5, 2017. (All values are Canadian dollars, which as of Tuesday afternoon were worth about $0.75 USD.) “The respondent’s inspection report included ‘satisfactory’ check marks for both left and right bearings. The respondent’s ‘inspection comments’ on the report were limited to ‘oil change, air filter, rear brakes, rock chip,” British Columbia Civil Resolution Tribunal Vice Chair Shelley Lopez wrote in the March Jerome v. Maple Ridge Volkswagen decision. But on Sept. 6, 2017, Jerome heard “a noise” and took the vehicle to his mechanic, Day-Lite Automotive, who concluded “it was ‘quite apparent’ it was a wheel bearing issue,” Lopez wrote in “In its statement provided to the

Honda: Incorrect Glass, Grilles Might Compromise ADAS By John Huetter Honda in a new position statement has warned collision repairers that aftermarket windshields and incorrect grilles might affect advanced driver assistance systems in models dating as far back as 2013. The new statement, which replaces one published in November 2014 about 2013-15 models, reflects the growing use of ADAS since then. Honda in April said it had reached 1 million vehicles on U.S. roads equipped with the Honda Sensing suite of ADAS technology — a package that includes autobraking, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. “The Honda Sensing application rate has more than doubled from 2016 to 2017 to more than 50,000 vehicles per month in the past year, and now is applied on 69 percent of 2018 modelyear vehicles,” Honda wrote in April. “… Honda Sensing is standard equipment today on the 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, 2018 Clarity Fuel Cell, 2017 Clarity Electric, 2018 Accord, justlaunched 2018 Accord Hybrid, and will be standard on the 2019 Insight hybrid sedan, slated for introduction later this year. The technology is available today on the 2018 Honda Fit, Civic Sedan, Coupe and Hatchback, CR-V and Pilot sport-utility vehicles, Odyssey minivan and Ridgeline pickup.” Acura in June 2017 reported that 70 percent of all new Acuras sold had the more advanced AcuraWatch suite. “Driver assist systems and safety systems on many late model Honda and Acura vehicles offer heightened safety performance and convenience for the driver and passengers,” Honda wrote in the new position statement. “However, collision repair technicians must be aware of issues that may be created if other than original equipment parts are used to repair vehicles with these systems. While aftermarket parts may look the same and fit in the same physical space on the vehicle, their use may present unforeseen circumstances causing the driver assist or other safety systems to operate abnormally, or not at all.” Insurers have no cause to oppose or quibble with the statement or the 10

Insurers have no cause to oppose or quibble with the statement or the potential for higher repair costs related to the OEM parts. Overall, they seem to come out far ahead on the deal if the OEM part ensures the ADAS system continues to work for the entire life of the vehicle.

potential for higher repair costs related to the OEM parts. Overall, they seem to come out far ahead on the deal if the OEM part ensures the ADAS system continues to work for the entire life of the vehicle. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute studied more than 327,000 2016 Accords, Civics and Pilots with and without Honda Sensing, according to Honda in April. The insurer-backed research center found collision claim severity fell $379, the Hondas saw nearly 11 percent fewer August 2018

third-party claims to other cars or property, and injuries to other people fell 28 percent. “Honda dreams of a collision-free mobile society and the Honda Sensing technology has a crucial role to play in advancing us toward that goal,” Honda automobile Senior Vice President Henio Arcangeli Jr. said in a statement then. “With the rapidly growing population of Honda vehicles applying these technologies, we hope to significantly reduce collisions involving Honda vehicles within the next three to four years.”n www.IneedOEMparts.com

Fouts Joins Troncalli Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram Barry Fouts became a member of the Troncalli Chrysler-JeepDodge-Ram family in May. Fouts brought more than 20 years of experience to the parts department of this Cumming, Georgia dealership. He began selling Alfa Romeo parts in the mid 1990s at a dealership that quickly acquired a Jeep franchise and eventually a Chrysler franchise. He has been working with Chrysler parts ever since. He has spent time behind a retail counter and in body-shop parts, but the majority of his experience is in wholesale parts.

“He's good with customers,” said Troncalli parts manager Will Manous. “He is well versed in all the order systems like Collision Link and CCC. We were lucky to grab him up.” For your next Chrysler parts order, you can reach Barry at 770889-2061, or reach out by e-mail to bfouts@troncalli.com. Chevrolet Equinox Crossover Offers Customers the Perfect Blend of Design, Technology and Value Call it the right balance. On the autumnal equinox today, Chevrolet introduced the all-new 2018 Equinox, a fresh and modern SUV sized and designed to meet the needs of the compact SUV customer. “We’ve got the strongest truck business in the industry and we’ve reinvigorated our car lineup with Volt, Cruze and Malibu,” said Alan Batey, Global Chevrolet president. “We’re applying the same customer focus to grow our crossover/SUV business — starting with the Chevrolet Equinox.” Today’s compact SUV customers want a vehicle that meets all of their needs, from design, connectivity and safety perspectives. The Equinox delivers on all fronts, starting with its fresh new design and all-new propulsion systems. The new Equinox’s expressive exterior has a lean, muscular skin echoing the global Chevrolet design cues and sculpted shapes seen in the Volt, Malibu and Cruze. Extensive aero development in the wind tunnel influenced the sleek shape. It is a richer, more detailed design featuring chrome trim on all models and Malibu-inspired styling. Projector-beam headlamps are standard, along with LED daytime running lamps. At the rear, horizontal taillamps emphasize the Equinox’s wide stance, while uplevel models feature LED taillamps. The interior takes advantage of the Equinox’s all-new architecture to offer a down-and-away instrument panel, while a low windshield base provides a commanding outward view. New elements such as available denim-style seat fabric blend high style with high durability, while a new “kneeling” rear seat enhances functionality. With it, the bottom cushions tilt forward when the split-folding seatbacks are lowered, allowing a flat floor for easier loading. The 2018 Equinox offers purposeful technology that helps keep passengers safe, comfortable and connected. Chevrolet’s latest connectivity technologies are front and center, including 7and 8-inch-diagonal MyLink infotainment systems designed to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an available 18

Jim Ellis Group Acquires KIA Dealership

Autonomous driving is creating a need for a new breed of in-vehicle networking solutions that can transmit data between the increasing number of highresolution sensors, cameras and processing engines at blazing-fast speeds. Today, Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA), Aquantia, Bosch, Continental

and NVIDIA announced the formation of the Networking for Autonomous Vehicles (NAV) Alliance, to drive the ecosystem development required for the next generation of Multi-Gig Ethernet networking in vehicles. “Volkswagen Group of America is pleased to join the NAV Alliance as

In mid April, Jim Ellis put his name on what was formally Cobb County Kia. Located at 1221 Auto Park Drive in Kennesaw, Georgia, Ellis Kia is just around the corner from the long-established Jim Ellis Volkswagen of Kennesaw. With the change in name comes the Ellis commitment to serving its customers, including wholesale parts. Serving as parts manager at the Kia store, Jessica Mulkey reports to Dan Wicker, parts director for both Jim Ellis Volkswagen and Jim Ellis Kia. According to Wicker, the Kia store already had a healthy amount of wholesale-parts business. “We want to capitalize on that,” he stated. “Jim Ellis Group takes wholesale-parts seriously and it's great to add another brand into that mix.” Retaining all the existing parts staff, Wicker's goal is to bring the Kia store's parts team to the level of excellence expected within the Ellis Group through training and encouragement. “This staff is young,” Wicker explained. “They are excited about the change. It was a parts department that wasn't operating to potential.

The Volkswagen team is looking forward to collaborating with other alliance members to advance the safety and ease of use for autonomous vehicles while bringing them to market faster,” said Dr. Matthias Erb, EVP & Chief Engineering Officer NAR, Volkswagen Group of America. Self-driving cars have become data centers on wheels constantly analyzing vast amounts of data to endeavor to ensure the safest and most secure experience for passengers, pedestrians, and other vehicles. NAV alliance’s members are joining together in an effort to shape the future of in-vehicle networking technologies as society prepares for the paradigm shift to autonomous driving. Akin to a very advanced nervous system, this next-generation networking architecture is based on an array of ECUs, CPUs, GPUs, high-definition cameras, sensors, gateways, and storage devices, all connected through a high-speed, Multi-Gigabit Ethernet network that works to seamlessly move data throughout the vehicle securely and reliably. NAV Alliance’s Founding Objectives Promote development of new specifications, as well as build consensus for new technologies related to MultiGig Ethernet automotive networking Create procedures and testing requirements to endeavor to ensure interoperability, security, and reliability of the in-vehicle network Promote products and solutions that adhere to the new specifications Liaise with standards bodies to build consensus, create IEEE proposals, and promote standardization Build awareness and educate the market place and users on the requirements for autonomous vehicle networks Founding members will focus on these core objectives and expand the NAV Alliance membership roster in the coming months to include additional automotive suppliers and manufacturers.n Southern Automotive Journal

defroster and heated side mirrors into the Blue Link mobile app. For the ultimate level of convenience when it comes to remote-starting a car on a bitterly cold winter morning, Hyundai has its new Blue Link integrations for Amazon Alexa and Google Home. These integrations work by a customer simply asking an Alexa-enabled or Google Assistant–enabled device, like an Amazon Echo or Google Home, to start their car. The interaction actually sounds like this: “Alexa, tell Blue Link to start my car at 80 degrees” or: “Okay, Google, ask Blue Link to start my ACCENT and set the temperature to 72 degrees.” To send commands to Hyundai vehicles via Alexa or Google, users must enable the Blue Link integration in their Alexa or Google Home app, available on iOS and Android devices, and then link their existing Blue Link account within the Alexa or Google Home app. Voice commands will be sent to Hyundai vehicles only after Alexa or Google Home prompts owners for their Blue Link Personal Identification Number (PIN).n

Efficient Powertrain For 2018, the new ACCENT receives an updated powertrain tuned for better fuel efficiency and drivability. The updated 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder Gasoline Direct Injected (GDI) engine produces 130 horsepower and 119 lb.-ft. of torque. Compared with the previousgeneration ACCENT, the engine’s powerband has improved, with increased lowend torque to make drivability easier. The 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder GDI engine is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency has also been improved by an estimated 7 percent overall. In the engine, components such as low-friction piston rings, a variable fuel pressure module and upgraded software for the engine control module improve overall operation. Further, improvements to the return springs in the braking system have reduced drive friction. The automatic transmission has also been redesigned to reduce the unit’s overall weight by 4

Ford: Opportunities for OEMs to Change Insurance With Connected Cars By John Huetter An automaker’s connection to the customer and vehicle could give it pieces of the customer value chain beyond the vehicle purchase and financing, based on a presentation from Ford connectivity and emerging services global director Mike Tinskey. Tinskey told a TU-Automotive webinar on OEMs and usage-based insurance (a term which can mean using telematics to set premiums based on miles driven or driving behavior) that Ford was seeing opportunities for change and disruption. The value chain of an F-150 could see a customer who bought a $40,000 truck spending more than $7,000 annually on factors like financing ($960), insurance ($1,890) gas ($2,000), parking and tolls ($1,650), mechanical repairs and parts ($1,150), and drive-through payments ($400), Tinskey said, citing Edmunds data. Tinskey said the number of embedded modems in Ford vehicles “will continue to increase very quickly,” and a modem in the example F-150 could change spending for every one of those items, “and insurance is no exception.” The implicaASA President From to Page 22 him to govern ASA with success and achievement. I know the entire board joins me in thanking him for his service and commitment to ASA.” “ASA has served the industry for more than 60 years, and I’m proud to say I was part of its rich history and success,” Risley says. “I look forward to

tion seemed to be that the OEM could capture a cut of that $7,000 by facilitating such transactions with a connected car. Ford in March announced that it would by 2019 deliver “standard connectivity on new vehicles, paving the way for over-the-air updates and the Transportation Mobility Cloud, an open platform that will empower tomorrow’s mobility systems.” It also that month announced an OBD-II plugin offering limited connectivity to older cars for $16.99 a month, with an option to upgrade it to a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot through Verizon. In January 2017, it announced its DriverScore technology for cars with SYNC 3 could let consumers share the data with carriers for discounts. This connectivity also has the potential to change how consumers buy insurance and what they pay for it, according to Tinskey and co-presenter Chris Wiklund, senior product manager of connected car services for Allstate telematics spinoff Arity. The trends and predictions they described could have major ramifications on collision repair. Connected cars and

usage-based insurance open the door for OEMs and insurers to detect a crash and recommend their at times competing networks immediately. Closer insurer-OEM partnerships could also render the DRPs of competing carriers less valuable. Usagebased insurance can weed out bad drivers who would generate more collision business — and the telematics can actually be used to improve driver behavior. Wiklund said about 36 million connected cars exist today, with 78 percent of “high-end” vehicles and 32 percent of “volume brands” sold connected — though Arity expects the latter will “change drastically” soon. He said major OEMs want 100 percent connected vehicles within the next year or two, McKinsey found 40 percent of consumers would switch brands to have a connected car, and automakers have treated the data from such vehicles as a “significant profit stream.” Arity projects the proportion of households with a connected car would in the next five years match the high degree of saturation seen today by smartphones,

staying engaged in ASA and contributing to its mission of serving its members. My family has always been my top priority so it will be nice to be back in my home base of Chicago for the long term.” Over the next few months, ASA will be conducting a search to find a new executive director, seeking an individual with association management experience.

“During this period of transition, it is our priority to find the best individual to lead while still maintaining a stable and effective organization,” says Schnepper. “Associations are undergoing enormous challenges due to generational shifts, social changes and technology. It’s crucial that we find the right leader who can address some of those challenges and give us a clear vision for our future.” n

Pay Competitor’s From Page 8 to have the car repaired and claim reimbursement for this expense,” Lopez wrote. “I find that the wheel bearing was worn and that its condition was a potential safety issue that required immediate repair. I find that the respondent should have disclosed the worn wheel bearing and instead wrongly stated on the inspection report that it was in satisfactory condition.” Jerome had Day-Lite fix the bearing for $653.11 and sued the dealership. Maple Ridge Volkswagen argued that the amount was unreasonable, offering estimates to support a replacement part cost of $110-$152. It also provided an invoice showing the part cost $218.80, which didn’t really help its case. However, Lopez ruled that it was reasonable that Jerome contracted DayLite to perform the work “given the safety

issue and given the respondent refused to do the replacement. That the respondent may have been able to complete the repair for less is not determinative.” She awarded him the $653.11, $125 in tribunal fees, $12 in “dispute-related expenses” and $2.89 in prejudgement interest. Jerome did lose one part of the case. Lopez refused to order the dealership pay him $150 — five hours at $30 an hour — for the time spent dealing with the repair. “I find such an award would be inappropriate,” Lopez wrote. “As set out in several past tribunal decisions, generally speaking the tribunal does not make these kinds of awards. I see no reason here to deviate from that practice.” Online small claims court The British Columbia Civil Resolution Tribunal which reached the decision is “Canada’s first online tribunal.” Its jurisdiction includes cases seeking $5,000 or less. Here’s how the process works: A

plaintiff and respondent submit statements, photos and correspondence related to the issue, and the court reads in what is called a “written hearing.” (A party or the tribunal itself can request an oral hearing, but even this would be done over the phone or through videoconferencing.) It costs $100-$150 to sue ($25 is knocked off if you do so online) and another $50 for the tribunal to hear the case — though you’ll note in this case Jerome was reimbursed the $125 in the decision. Lawyers are permitted but not necessary, and the court cautions that it doesn’t often award attorney’s fees. The decision is emailed or faxed to all the parties involved and posted online. This seems efficient, affordable and accessible to laymen. It’s ideal for small businesses like body shops who have access to written documentation in spades supporting their case but who can’t constantly disrupt work by appearing in court.n

advanced safety based on Cadillac’s “control and alert” strategy, which employs advanced technologies including radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors to help prevent crashes. The safety features bolster driver vision and awareness of road hazards and can even help the driver avert potential crashes. In certain situations, Cadillac’s advanced crash-avoidance systems, such as automatic braking, can automatically apply braking in response to potential hazards. The available Driver Awareness 2018 Ford from Page 32 he said. For an insurer, even a single connected car should yield enough data “to start with” about the risk of policies for the household, according to Wiklund. “We need to start looking at connected car data now,” he said. Tinskey said that in addition to measuring the driver’s risk with usage-based insurance, “we believe the vehicle should also be scored” based on its advanced driver assistance systems performance. (This already happens to some degree at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.) Consumer Reports data shows satisfaction with ADAS, according to Tinskey, and “we are beginning our journey” to quantify the impact of ADAS, he said. Ford has begun to test vehicles with and without ADAS safety systems, and the frequency and severity data so far “are encouraging,” with claims data starting to show the same result, Tinskey said. Within the next year or two, the impact should be apparent, he said. Wiklund said insurers could indeed provide discounts for ADAS systems — but it could also yank the lower premiums if the customer brought the system offline. “A good portion” of people disable autobraking, he said, “so maybe they don’t deserve those discounts.” He also predicted that drowsiness sensors would move to lower-end vehicles. (He didn’t elaborate, but the technology can refer to systems able to monitor drivers with an interior camera or the vehicle’s behavior on the road to detect the owner is nodding off.) Biometrics which can actually monitor driver health signs (such as pulse, blood pressure or temperature) are being introduced on higher-end cars and will “eventually” go mass market, he predicted. 34

Package also features updates to provide the comfort of assurance in a safe drive. XTS models equipped with the Driver Awareness Package will find features such as Low Speed Automatic Braking, Following Distance Indicators and Lane Change Alert to complement Side Blind Zone Alert. The Driver Awareness Package is available on Luxury Trim and is standard on higher trims. The Driver Assist Package, which adds Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward/Reverse Automatic Braking, is available on Premium Luxury and standard on Platinum models. Additional safety features include dual-stage frontal air bags, knee air While many carriers are using plugin device to track driving behavior, Tinskey said Ford felt the data from an embedded vehicle modem “is the highest quality,” and a customer didn’t have to do anything than opt-in — nor did they have to spend a piece of their own data plan to share their information. An insurer also could be sure the consumer was actually driving the vehicle, rather than have to determine this another way. (For example, think of a usage-based insurance program tied to a customer’s cell phone. When an insurer sees from UBI data the customer is watching Netflix while traveling 60 mph, is it distracted driving, or is the policyholder merely a passenger on the trip? Are they even in their own vehicle?) However, Wiklund argued that OEMs embedding connectivity would add value to existing insurer connected devices, such as a smartphone app or OBD-II dongle, rather than replace them in the near-term. A carrier would use both the OEM and aftermarket options. An insurer partnering with an OEM also might be cheaper than relying on advertising, Tinskey suggested, presenting data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and J.D. Power that showed companies spending millions on ads to in some cases capture a small customer yield. (GEICO, for example, spent $1.34 billion in 2015 but puled in a Top 5-leading 7.6 percent yield rate. Nationwide, meanwhile, spent $359 million on ads but only saw a new auto customer yield rate of 1.8 percent.) He said Ford’s heard it costs in the $700 range for one insurer to convince a customer to switch carriers, and data suggests $3-$4 billion a year was spent on insurance ads. Insurance could instead be offered “either pre or post” at the time a customer bought a new vehicle — a tactic that’s already in place in Europe and China, and August 2018

bags, side-impact air bags, head-curtain air bags and seat side-impact air bags for outboard rear passengers. A Rear Vision Camera is standard on all XTS models. Head-up display is standard on Premium Luxury and Platinum models. The XTS also offers automatic parking assist (FWD models), which enables the car to park itself in both parallel and perpendicular spaces. It uses ultrasonic sensors to locate a suitable space and maneuver the car into the space. The driver is required to only engage reverse and apply the accelerator and brake pedals. n

with regulatory tweaks could be modified to UBI in those countries, Tinskey said. Almost everyone in the “Ford world” buys Chinese insurance policies, at the point of vehicle purchase with a 12-month pre-pay of the $1,000 average annual cost, he said. “It’s a very different arrangement,” he said. He predicted the model would shift to dealership insurance sales for Ford and other OEMs in the U.S. as well. Wiklund said leads from connected cars are valuable, and having an insurancegrade driving score that a carrier can use for an exact quote “increases the value of that lead tremendously,” he said. A carrier can give a “much more competitive quote” up-front with such data, he said. (One can imagine a scenario where a telematicssavvy carrier can dramatically undercut the consumer’s current premium developed through traditional methods.) Wiklund said data rights, ownerships, and opting in must be addressed, but predicted the success of the program would come down to the consumer seeing the value proposition of sharing data. If the exchange was transparent and fair, they’d accept it, he said. Wiklund said the usage-based insurance utilization is about 4 percent, while Tinskey predicted about 10 percent of policyholders opted in to UBI. Tinskey said new policyholders were increasing the opt-in rate, and some insurers are seeing a “very high double-digit conversion” to usagebased insurance. He predicted the industry would reach a point soon where not sharing data with a UBI program would mean higher premiums. Reprinted Contented: Copyright © 2018. DRIVEN COMMUNICATIONS INC.
