U.S. House Committee on Small Business Holds Hearing on Impact of Intellectual Property The U.S. House Committee on Small Business held a hearing entitled “The Impact of Intellectual Property on Entrepreneurship and Job Creation.”

Rep. Nydia M. Velazquez, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the committee, held the hearing to highlight the importance of protecting intellectual property and how this protection can “spur job growth.”

Several witnesses from different backgrounds, ranging from business software to motor vehicle equipment, testified at the hearing. William Mansfield, director of Intellectual Property for ABRO industries, testified on behalf of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), representing companies that manufacture motor vehicle parts for use in the light vehicle and heavy duty original equipment and aftermarket industries.

Mansfield said, “Counterfeit parts and components for cars, trucks, buses and commercial vehicles pose a critical problem to the American economy and the supplier industry because of the wide range of counterfeit products manufactured and trafficked worldwide. In the past, MEMA has estimated that counterfeit goods cost motor vehicle suppliers at least $3 billion in the United States and $12 billion globally in lost sales. Please note that the industry believes these numbers are conservative. In fact, Frost and Sullivan estimated in 2006 that the global losses to motor vehicle suppliers due to counterfeiting would be as high as $45 billion in 2011.”

Nissan Donates $150,000 to Universal Technical Institute Foundation Scholarships and internships are a hot commodity this time of year as high school graduates look for financial assistance for post-secondary education and seek to gain hands-on experience in their career pursuits. Students attending Universal Technical Institute (UTI) have the opportunity to obtain both.

The UTI Foundation today announced a renewal of a $150,000 donation from Nissan North America, the organizations' second consecutive donation for scholarships and internships.

Thirty students will each be awarded a $5,000 scholarship to support their work toward a career as a Nissan or Infiniti technician. Each student will attend UTI's nine-week Nissan Automotive Technical Training (NATT) program. The scholarship also includes a short-term internship at a Nissan or Infiniti dealership.

House Judiciary Committee Looks at Competition and Antitrust The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing on Competition and Antitrust recently. The witnesses, the Hon. Christine Varney, assistant attorney general for Antitrust at the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Hon. Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, testified before the committee and answered questions about competition and antitrust issues.

Varney stated at a June 9, 2010, Senate hearing on "Oversight of the

Enforcement of the Antitrust Laws" that she appreciated the support the Obama administration was offering in efforts to eliminate antitrust immunity for the health-insurance industry. At another conference in May, where she spoke with the American Bar Association, Varney had similar things to say about the health insurance industry, including how she fully supported the House's vote to repeal the McCarran-Ferguson Act. She supports competition in the health insurance field and the outlawing

of price fixing, bid rigging and market allocation.

The Automotive Service Association supports repeal of the McCarran-Ferguson Act for all insurers, including property and casualty insurers. H.R. 1583, the Insurance Industry Competition Act, sponsored by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., and Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation addresses ASA's concerns with the McCarran-Ferguson Act.n

NADA Statement on Study of Dealership Closings In response to the report requested by Congress from the Office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP) on how General Motors and Chrysler dealerships were selected for termination, Ed Tonkin, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), issued the following statement: “The SIGTARP report confirms what was said in NADA’s testimony presented to Congress in several hearings and to the Auto Task Force in multiple meetings: ‘We do not see how these

cuts make economic sense – not for the companies, not for the dealers, not for local communities and certainly not for the struggling U.S. economy.’

“Similarly confirmed by the report was NADA’s unwavering position – also presented to Congress on multiple occasions – that ‘rapid dealer reductions increase unemployment, threaten communities and decrease state and local tax revenue without any material corresponding decrease in the automaker’s costs.’

“Importantly, the Inspector General’s report also validates the

Congressional efforts which gave thousands of dealers the opportunity to have a neutral arbitrator review their cases and possibly save thousands of jobs.

“Finally, the report demonstrates what NADA has maintained for many years – that the franchised automobile dealership is and will continue to be the most powerful job-creating entity on Main Streets all across America and that National Automobile Dealers Association’s 17,000 members provide long-term economic opportunity for nearly 1 million Americans.”n

Ford, TechShop Collaborate To Spur “DIY” Auto Innovation with New Detroit-Area Workshop

Ford and do-it-yourself (DIY)based TechShop have kicked off a collaborative effort to open a workshop in the Detroit area that invites innovators, from backyard tinkerers to software engineers, to come on in and invent the next must-have in automotive technology.

A membership-based open-access concept started in 2006, TechShop (www.techshop.ws) offers creative minds of all kinds affordable access to space, tools, and machinery so they can dream up, design and develop prototypes of their latest inventions. To date, TechShop has locations in California and North Carolina, with more than 800 total members.

Ford and TechShop first met up in May at the largest DIY event of its kind, 2010 Maker Faire in San Mateo, Calif., where Ford was invited to show off its “American Journey 2.0” open- innovation vehicle app project with University of Michigan students. That gathering ignited the idea for the matchup that has taken form in less than three months.

“Ford has taken a leadership role in tapping ideas from outside the automotive space, including with academia, consumer electronics and information technology companies, to help create powerful first-to-market technologies

such as Ford SYNC. Why not extend those opportunities to individual inventors and the maker community as well; asking them to embrace the vehicle as a possible platform for their ideas,” said K. Venkatesh Prasad, group and senior technical leader, Ford Infotronics Research and Advanced Engineering.

Ford technical leaders will share the company’s vision on individual inventive contributions and how Detroit-area entrepreneurs can play a part during the Detroit Maker Faire held at The Henry Ford in Dearborn this weekend. “The talent pool and level of skill and knowledge in and around Detroit is incredible,” added Bill Coughlin, president and CEO of Ford Global Technologies, the domestic auto industry’s only internal licensing group.

“TechShop can provide a physical hub for this inventive community, allowing us to connect with them in a way never done before.”

Ford is the first automaker to collaborate with TechShop, said Mark Hatch, TechShop CEO. “We are thrilled that Ford wants to work with TechShop to create a game-changing innovative workspace in Detroit, a market area full of a talented community of makers, hobbyists, backyard mechanics and general tinkerers that we have been trying to enter for more than a year.”

The Ford and TechShop collaboration is further evidence of Ford’s overarching adoption of the open innovation model made popular by social media, software developers and technology companies.

In recent years, Ford’s outreach to automotive outsiders for ideas has included a who’s who list of academia, suppliers, consumer electronics and information technology companies.

That list also includes more unlikely suspects, such as consumers and software developers.

Last spring, for example, Ford actively engaged consumers to submit, share and suggest ideas and technologies on the “Your Ideas” section of the Ford brand interactive consumer Web site, www.thefordstory.com. The pilot session generated some 3,600 submissions, giving consumers the ability to participate in a community-based setting where they could review and rate posted ideas and track what people thought about their own suggestions.

Ford Researchers Advancing Crash Avoidance Capability With Wireless Technology Ford Motor Company's researchers are developing advanced crash avoidance systems that use wireless and GPS technologies to help vehicles communicate with each other in traffic and help drivers avoid or mitigate accidents.

Ford's Automatic Braking Intersection Collision Avoidance System (ABICAS), which is under development, uses radio-based wireless sensors, GPS and navigation information to detect the relative location of other radio-equipped test vehicles. The system is being designed to warn drivers of imminent

side-impact collisions and automatically activate the brakes if necessary to avoid or minimize the damage caused by such collisions.

ABICAS is enabled by wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and works in conjunction with radar- and camera-based driver assist features, such as adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, which are available on many Ford vehicles.

While radar and camera sensors can detect other vehicles ahead and behind a vehicle, radio-based wireless sensors give vehicles a 360-degree "view." Information from these various sensors is combined with engineering algorithms to ensure the validity of an imminent collision before automatically activating the vehicle's brakes – all of which happens in a split second.

When a vehicle is equipped with a dedicated short-range wireless radio, it can communicate with similarly equipped vehicles, and use the shared information in concert with its safety systems.

"By leveraging wireless technology, Ford is developing tomorrow's crash avoidance systems today," said Jim Vondale, director, Ford Automotive Safety Office. "Thanks to research projects like September 2010

ABICAS, tomorrow's vehicles will one day be able to talk to each other to avoid accidents."

The smart way to cross intersections Ford's vehicle-to-vehicle research builds on knowledge gained from its Smart Intersection project, focused on wireless communications between vehicles and intersection infrastructure.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40 percent of all traffic accidents occur in intersections where side-impact collisions are most common.

The Smart Intersection project communicates with test vehicles to warn drivers of potential collisions, such as when a vehicle is about to run through a red light. The intersection is outfitted with technology that monitors traffic signal status, GPS data and digital maps to assess potential hazards, and then transmits warning information to other specially equipped vehicles.

Once the information is received by the vehicle, its collision avoidance system can be designed to determine whether the car can safely cross the intersection or if it needs to stop before entering the intersection. If the system determines the need to stop and senses that the driver is not decelerating quickly enough, it issues visual and audible warnings to the driver.

"For vehicle-to-vehicle communications to be effective, common standards will need to be established for all automakers to follow," said Mike Shulman, technical leader, Ford Active Safety Research and Advanced Engineering.

The design strategy for the new 4Runner emphasizes a more rugged, powerful stance. Large diameter wheels and tires were added to not only improve off-road performance, but also enhance the 4Runner’s truck-based characteristics. In addition to its styling emphasis on ruggedness and outdoor adventure, the new design utilizes a combination of Toyota’s classic boxy form and progressive styling.

All 4Runner grades feature rugged new bumpers and wider shoulders, with newly designed head- lamp and tail-light systems, which offer a newly-minted, technical design quality and better nighttime performance. The front ends square fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy and square rear bumper and back door.

The Trail grade is designed to maximize off-road performance with a superior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of functional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast.

The 2010 4Runner is powered by a new 4.0-liter V6, which now generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Through the use of advanced engine management that includes dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the new 4.0-liter engine offers the best of both worlds, adding more power while improving efficiency. For 2010, the new V6 engine produces 34 horsepower more than the prior V6, and 10 horsepower more than the optional V8 of the previous generation.

To build on its tradition of rugged body-on-frame construction, the newest 4Runner shares the same platform as the FJ Cruiser. Extensive frame and body reinforcements have been added, using high-tensile materials to add strength without adding weight. SR5 and Trail

4x4 models have a two-speed leveroperated, part-time system with neutral position, while the 4Runner Limited is equipped with full-time, four-wheeldrive with a locking center differential and employs a three-mode, center console-mounted switch. The new 4Runner is also equipped with a stronger rear differential over the previous model, thanks to a gear ring that has increased in size from 7.87 to 8.18 inches.

An array of advanced features, formerly only available in the Land Cruiser, further boosts off-highway capabilities.

The Trail grade offers Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS radically improves terrain-following ability by disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articulation in slow, difficult terrain.

Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade.

CRAWL is an adjustable electro-mechanical system that can be tuned to match the terrain by selecting any of five speed levels.

The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system which allows the 4x4 operator to dial in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose terrain such as mud and sand, more-thannormal wheel slip is permitted, allowing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s September 2010

All 4Runner 4x4 models are standard-equipped with Downhill Assist Control (DAC), which is designed to augment the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by holding the vehicle to a target speed with no driver intervention. All V6 4Runner models come standard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

The new 4Runner may be a truck-based SUV, but it offers the kind of drivability and riding comfort more often associated with carbased platforms.

Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four corners for a comfortable ride and controlled handling.

A double-wishbone independent front suspension, combined with new, variable-flow rack and pinion steering, makes for precise control on demanding roadways.

The all-new 4Runner has been thoughtfully equipped with features and systems to create a comfortable travel space, allowing for convenient operation in everyday use.

The larger interior has been completely redesigned with comfort and utility in mind. The front seats have a greater range of adjustment, both vertically and front to rear.

For second-row passengers, a newly sculpted front seat-back shape provides additional knee space. A center armrest has been added, and the second-row seats now individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps.

Third-row seating has been enhanced with a larger, more supportive seating area. Access to the third row has been improved by splitting the second-row seats into a 40/20/40 configuration and adopting a one-touch walk-in function.

The cargo area has been re-engineered to be more versatile than any SUV on the market. Another convenience feature is an available pull-out cargo deck that is capable of carrying up to 440 pounds of weight.n Southern Automotive Journal

Toyota's Jim Lentz to Address 2011 NADA Convention & Expo in San Francisco Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., will be the keynote industry speaker at the National Automobile Dealers Association Convention & Expo in San Francisco next February.

Lentz, who started his career at Toyota in 1982 as the merchandising manager for the company’s Portland, Ore., region and was later promoted to general manager for the San Francisco and Los Angeles regions, will address attendees at the convention’s general session at the Moscone Center on Saturday, Feb. 5.

“Toyota has certainly been through some ups and downs this year,” says Jack Caldwell, owner of Caldwell Toyota-Scion in Conway, Ark., and chairman of NADA’s convention committee.

“And Jim Lentz has been through it all.

The captain of what has been dubbed the “Miracle on the Hudson,” Sullenberger is an aviation safety expert and accident investigator who also serves as the founder and CEO of Safety Reliability Methods, a consulting company dedicated to management, safety, performance and reliability issues. Sullenberger, born and raised in Denison, Texas, is the author of the New York Times best-selling book, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters (October 2009). He was named one of the world’s 100 most influential people by TIME magazine.

Ed Tonkin, vice president of Ron Tonkin Family of Dealerships in Portland, Ore., is the 2010 chairman of NADA and represents Oregon’s new-car dealers on the association’s board of directors.

Tonkin, who will provide the Chairman’s Address on Saturday, Feb. 5, became a new-car dealer in 1981 after spending much of his childhood helping his father at the dealerships. As NADA chairman, Tonkin has traveled the globe speaking to diverse audiences about the challenges facing U.S. auto retailing. He was the dealers’ chief advocate on Capitol Hill, arguing against including dealers in the Wall Street reform bill. He also represented NADA abroad on many occasions, including a trip to New Delhi, where he spoke to Indian dealers about the wildly successful “cash for clunkers” program.

Stephen Wade, president of Stephen Wade Auto Center in St. George, Utah, is a multifranchise dealer and the 2011 chairman of NADA. Wade, who will provide the Incoming Chairman’s Address on Monday, Feb. 7, became a new-car dealer in 1973 and has represented Utah’s dealers on NADA’s board of directors since 2002. He also owns southern Utah’s only TV station, KCSG, and served in the National Guard from 1969 to 1975.

2010 Mazda CX-7: Sophisticated, Sustainable And Detailed

Launched in 2006 as a 2007 model, the Mazda CX-7 offers a blend of sports car verve and SUV practicality in a way that few other crossover vehicles can, and has garnered high praise by consumers and media as a true driver's vehicle.

"A key word in the development process of the 2010 CX-7 was refinement," said Masashi Otsuka, Mazda Motor Corporation's CX-7 program manager. "The vehicle we had to start with was already really good and well liked by consumers, so my team didn't have to start over, but simply refine." For 2010, the CX-7 continues to offer more of what has made it a success and adds characteristics of sophistication, sustainability and detail.

To address a customer request, the highlight of Otsuka's team's work for the 2010 model year is the development of a

more economical example of the already thrifty CX-7. This model will incorporate an all-new naturally aspirated DOHC 16valve 2.5-liter MZR four-cylinder engine coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel is delivered to the intake ports by an electronically controlled sequential injection system, where the modular ignition coils are positioned directly above the spark plugs for increased efficiency and reduced maintenance and under-hood complexity.

Other lightweight items are the aluminum block and head, the forged powder-metal connecting rods (reduced reciprocating weight), and the injectionmolded, nylon-reinforced-plastic intake manifold which also provides smooth internal passages for more efficient air flow. Overall, the normally aspirated 2.5-liter MZR engine delivers excellent off-the-line and overtaking characteristics, and is a strong match for the CX-7s dynamics.

Continuing to be available, and carried over from the previous model years, the CX-7 also is powered by an awardwinning 2.3L DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) turbo engine. Engineered to deliver high performance at all engine and road speeds, along with low exhaust emissions and good fuel economy, the MZR 2.3 DISI turbo-charged engine produces up to an enthusiastic 244 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at only 2,500 rpm.

A six-speed Sport AT automatic transmission also provides full manual control demanded by assertive drivers.

Shifts are crisp, in keeping with CX-7's sportscar character.

ride and agile handling. ComputerAided-Engineering analysis was used to optimize this structure, delivering high torsional and bending rigidity with minimal weight.

The new 2010 CX-7's styling is based on the athletic design of the current model, but incorporates enhancements for a clearer premium identity and more refined character. The exterior design features a revised lower front grille with a larger five-point grille similar in appearance to those adopted recently on the Mazda RX-8, MX-5 and MAZDA3.

CX-7's new front fascia clearly communicates the Mazda brand, and harmonizes it with the latest models in the line-up.

The 66-degree windshield angle is sleeker than many sportscars, let alone SUVs. Distinct character lines run through the A-pillars and along the edges of the hood to the front fascia. Prominent front fenders reveal a clear Mazda family identity.

This distinctive overall exterior design is well balanced with the aerodynamics of the vehicle. While it provides outstanding aerodynamic performance, this exterior design does not compromise craftsmanship. Panel and component partgaps are flush and tight. NADA: Financial Reform Law Protects Consumers and Keeps Auto Financing Affordable, Accessible With President Obama’s signature, the most significant overhaul of the nation’s financial system is now law and with it, consumers will still be able to find competitive financing options at auto dealerships.

Ed Tonkin, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), praised the efforts of lawmakers who fought to preserve the existing regulatory structure for dealer-assisted financing, which protects consumers and ensures affordable auto credit.

Tonkin also cautioned that any regulatory overreach could hurt the very people it is looking to protect by disrupting the extremely competitive auto finance marketplace.

Tonkin released the following statement: “Car buyers will ultimately benefit from the new law because it preserves dealer-assisted financing as a convenient and affordable option for consumers. The Brownback-Campbell auto dealer language received strong bipartisan support because Congress clearly understood that placing burdensome and unnecessary rules on small business dealers who merely arrange loans would make it harder and more expensive for car buyers to access auto credit.

“The new law balances strong consumer protections and affordable access to auto credit. The Federal Trade Commission, the Federal Reserve and 50

state consumer protection agencies will continue to oversee dealerships' finance operations. The new law maintains existing consumer protection laws, while permitting millions of American families to continue to have multiple financing options to purchase a vehicle.

“The newly-created Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection will have direct federal oversight over all auto loans and those that underwrite, fund or service auto loans, such as banks, credit unions, finance companies and ‘buy here-pay here’ operations at dealerships.

As the new law is fully implemented, we urge regulators to closely examine how new rules will impact a family’s ability to finance a vehicle.”n

Manufacturers are building sleek and sporty EVs to create interest among customers who would be early adopters. Giving an EV distance capability of more than 100 miles (160km) and enhancing the range and safety of batteries are the key focus areas of development for EV manufacturers.

However, the prices of the initial EVs are likely to be prohibitive.

To counter this cost challenge, federal and local governments have passed a series of legislation, benefits and rebates to help manufacturers offer their vehicles at affordable prices.

"With the advent of lithium ion battery technology and innovative financial models, the automotive industry is all set to witness a revolutionary business case," notes Kumar. "Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have little choice but to join in the drive to address the energy crisis issue."

Associations and close participation among OEMs, battery manufacturers and energy utilities will accelerate the introduction of EVs. Market participants could also collaborate with environmental advocates and lobby for benefits.n

Mercedes 100 Years From Page 12 Mercedes-Benz SSK, short for Super Sport Kurz, was loud and fast. Known as the “White Elephant” for its brute force, the SSK had a commanding presence and dominated road races due to its shorter wheelbase, Roots blower, and large displacement 300 horsepower motor, which boasted an impressive top speed of 120 miles per hour.

The 1952 W194 300SL, built in just nine months, marked the debut of the SL moniker, meaning “Sport” and “Light.”

While many chassis components were derived from a sedan model, its rigid tubular spaceframe forced developers to create its iconic ‘gullwing’ doors.

The 1955 300SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupe,” named after Mercedes-Benz chief engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, was a closed roof version of the famous 300SLR racecar, designed to provide the most comfort for demanding longdistance races. Florida Gulf Coast Chevrolet Dealer Combats the Economic Downturn With Strategic Initiative That Drives Sales Figures Up For Taylor Hood, general manager of Preston Hood Chevrolet, located on the shores of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, the challenges of the current economic climate have meant rethinking the way to operate his family-owned small business in a big way.
