BUILDING FINE YOUNG

MEN. ONE BOY AT A TIME.

WELCOME

Welcome to the new 2025–26 school year. I wonder what it will hold?

The wonderful thing about working in a school is that each year starts afresh. The successes and struggles of the previous year are gone, yesterday’s news. Instead, before us lies a fresh canvas with nothing on it. So much is possible.

Of course, momentum from your successes can carry forward into this from last year and similarly, you may worry that some struggles you had last year might bleed into this year. That’s fair to consider. But it does not diminish that we always start with that blank canvas. A fresh start. So much is possible.

So with that optimism, welcome to the new school year!

Sine Timore Aut Favore.

GREETINGS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL

Dear St. George’s Families,

Welcome back to another exciting year at St. George’s School! I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones continuing to enjoy all that summer has to offer. With the move into our new Senior School campus in January of this past year, we were fortunate to experience many firsts in the latter stages of the previous school year. Now, 2025–26 will represent our first full school year in Brown Hall, Tang Hall, and Princeps Hall. Last year also saw the return of the historic Wings to the Senior School. It was amazing to watch the boys of Clark, Fell, Tupper, and McDougall compete and bond together at our various Wing Days and events. Congratulations to Clark for winning the Annual Wings Championship! We are pleased to once again kick off the year with all our students at the now traditional Wings Fest on September 3rd. It really does provide a fun and ideal way to bring our community back together.

Every new school year brings with it a healthy amount of change. Here at the Senior School, I am excited about our new Leadership Team. Ms. Phoebe Darwin will begin her first year as Vice Principal of Student Life. Similarly, Mr. Dima Povalyaev enters into the new position of Vice Principal, Student Wellness. Mr. Liam Sullivan is assuming leadership of Harker Hall and our Boarding Program as the Vice Principal, Boarding Life. He is working closely with Ms. Gillian Ani, who is the Assistant Vice Principal, Boarding Life. Lastly, Mr. Chris Vytasek will continue his outstanding oversight of our Academic Program as Vice Principal, Academics. He will remain closely connected to Mr. Stephen Ziff, Assistant Vice Principal Academics. I am eager to collaborate with this exceptional team of educators and leaders as we work alongside our decorated and passionately engaged faculty and staff.

I am always mindful of the powerful partnership that we have with our families. We share the same ambition, which is to do everything possible to help each of our students maximize their potential and become the best versions of themselves. In order for our boys to develop into ready and relevant future leaders, it is crucial that we leverage all facets of their school experience. Whether it is Academics, Student Life, or our deeply held commitment to facilitating an environment that nurtures wellness and belonging for every boy, our mission remains vibrantly clear to us. Simply put, this mission is guiding and supporting our boys.

The following information included in this digital book document provides details about school start-up, including the Academic and Student Life Programs. As always, please check the website and read the weekly Saints eNews to stay informed about all the amazing activities and events going on at the School. The “My Resources” page of the website is also a helpful tool as it provides invaluable information about the school’s policies and routines..

Here’s to an enriching and fulfilling year ahead! Thank you for your unwavering support and trust in St. George’s School. Together, we will strive to nurture young minds, building fine young men who will each contribute to making this world a better place.

Kindest regards,

SCHOOL

Further details are shared weekly with students through the Student Life Canvas page. 2025–26 School Key Dates can be found here

SCHEDULES AND COURSE CHANGE REQUESTS

Preliminary schedules were posted in early July, and more detailed schedules for all students are now posted on the School Portal. For technical assistance, including username and password resets, please contact: communications@stgeorges.bc.ca.

All students should look at their schedules twice before school starts: now and again after 5:00 pm on September 2nd for an updated version (this may include changes in room numbers, confirmation of any course change requests, etc).

Your final schedule is based on school requirements, the information you gave us in the spring, class capacities, teacher and facility availability, and school approval. There are a few opportunities to request a change in your schedule, depending on your grade level. Please see this document for more information on when changes are possible.

If you would like to request a change, please take the following steps:

• Review your schedule on the School Portal and discuss it with your parents/guardians.

• Review the 2025-26 Master Timetable to see what other options are available. Please keep in mind that if you change English courses, you are still expected to have completed your Summer Reading before the start of class.

• Make any requests for changes using the appropriate form: Course Change Into Grade 8 | Course Change Into Grade 9 and 10 (Opens at 9:00 am on August 18th until 4:00 pm on August 29th).

• You do not need to communicate with anyone else for approval (Teacher, Head of Department, etc.).

• Look again at your account on the School Portal after 5:00 pm on September 2nd for any changes that were possible.

• Before Winter Break, Grade 8 and 9 students will have an opportunity to request changes for Semester 2 Visual Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Applied Design, Skills, and Technology courses.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 11–12:

Our 2025-26 Master Timetable is optimized based on the combination of student choice, teacher and facility availability, and school approval. You may have elements of your own schedule that no longer serve your interests, goals, or capacities. You have multiple opportunities to request course changes. Please see the list of Course Change Request Windows here.

If you would like to request a change that fits the restrictions in the Course Change Request Window, please take the following steps:

• Review your schedule included in your account on the School Portal and discuss it with your parents/guardians.

• Review the 2025-26 Master Timetable to explore other options available. Please keep in mind that if you change English courses, you are still expected to have completed your Summer Reading before the start of class.

• Refer to the Course Change Request Windows for further course change details.

• Visit page 14 of the Academic Handbook for graduation and course load requirements, and the rest of the handbook for course descriptions and prerequisite

• Make requests using the Course Change Into Grade 11 and 12 form. Returning students should use their St. George’s email address to complete the form. New students can use their personal email address.

• After this, you do not need to take any further action or consult with your University Counsellor separately. The University Counsellors, Mr. Vytasek, and Ms. Bahia will be reviewing requests and will reach out to you via email should there be any questions. Please check your email regularly during this time period.

• Review your updated schedule by 5:00 pm on September 2nd for changes that were possible during the first Course Change Window and attend classes as scheduled.

TEXTBOOKS

There is no advanced textbook collection. Teachers will make arrangements for students to receive textbooks if needed during class time. Please Note: When textbooks are signed out, students are responsible for returning the books with the specific barcodes assigned to them. Charges are incurred for lost, damaged, or unreturned textbooks by June 26, 2026.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

A list of required school supplies is available here Students are encouraged to develop their own system of managing their daily, weekly, and monthly schedules and will be provided with organization ideas through Flex Day Programming. Additionally, to further support the development of time management and organisational skills, all students in Grades 8–11 will be provided with a personal planner this year.

SUMMER READING

Every year, students in each grade are provided with a Summer Reading List, based on their grade. The lists have a combination of required and optional texts that students are expected to read before the first day of school. The first unit of the year in English classes is devoted to these texts. We encourage you to read them as a family! The Summer Reading List can be found here.

For further clarification or questions about anything in this section, please contact: MS. PHOEBE DARWIN, VICE PRINCIPAL, STUDENT LIFE pdarwin@stgeorges.bc.ca

STUDENT LIFE

Student Life enriches the schooling experience of our students, ensuring that the development of our Core Values and the social-emotional growth of each individual remains at the forefront of our daily endeavours. Grounded in positive relationships, our school community nurtures a sense of belonging and provides opportunities for students to gain a strong sense of identity. We accomplish these goals of identity formation through a systems approach and intentional programming within our Advisory structure, Co-curricular activities, Student Support Services, Flex Days, our Wings Program, and by capitalizing on teachable moments. It is through sustained engagement in the aforementioned that we believe our students will gain a stronger sense of their values and personal beliefs; a foundation that will serve them well beyond the walls of St. George’s School.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS

Co-Curricular Programs are an important aspect of our educational programming and include Competitive Athletics, Recreational Athletics, Arts and Leisure, and Co-Curricular Clubs. All students in Grades 8–10 must participate in a CoCurricular activity each term; students in Grades 11 and 12 are permitted to take one term off.

Students’ Co-Curricular assignments will be posted on Canvas, along with details about the location and the start time of activities. The following is an outline of the After-School Co-Curricular Programming Timelines for Term 1 (September 15–November 21, 2025):

• Online Sign-Up Opens:

- Boarders + DISCO: Sunday, September 7 at 7:00 pm

- Day Students: Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 pm

• Sign-Up Closes: Friday, September 12 at 2:00 pm

• Official Co-Curricular Start: Monday, September 15

• Co-Curricular Change Deadline: Wednesday, October 1

• Official Co-Curricular Ends: Friday, November 21

• A full list of the Term 1 options is available here. (Subject to change, please see Canvas for the most up-to-date version)

• A list of all available Co-Curriculars can be found here.

Students will receive a report card comment outlining their attendance and participation in each Co-Curricular activity.

INTEREST CLUBS

Interest Clubs are student-led groups that provide another opportunity for students who share similar areas of passion to come together, connect, and collaborate. In September, there will be an Interest Clubs Fair for students to see the wide range of clubs available.

ADVISORY

The purpose of the St. George’s School Advisory Program is to cultivate a positive school climate and ensure that each student experiences a sense of belonging within our school community. Through nested communities, our students gain a more personalized learning experience where pastoral care, teaching and learning, character development, and community building are nurtured. Advisory classes occur weekly during the Connection Block on Tuesdays.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Student comportment is a core aspect of life at St. George’s School. As always, we hold our students to the highest level of expectations and are pleased with how they learn to meet these expectations on a daily basis, forming habits that create a foundation for their success for years to come. The Code of Conduct outlines our expectations of our students as they relate to behaviour both on and off campus. It is essential that all students take the time to review the key principles outlined and have a full understanding of the expectations. As parents, you would have reviewed and signed the Code of Conduct during the registration process.

UNIFORMS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE

St. George’s School’s Uniform and Student Personal Appearance Policy exist in order to cultivate a safe and respectful educational environment. The Dress Code outlines our high standards for presentation and complements our expectations for work and behaviour. The shared uniform is an expression of our shared community and we ask students to wear their uniform with respect and responsibility. Spring dress will be in place until Thanksgiving.

St. George’s School’s Uniform and Student Personal Appearance Policy both support and foster an inclusive school environment. Students’ hair should be kept neat and tidy and away from the face. Neatly trimmed facial hair is permitted, and the School will respect the religious and cultural traditions of students who observe a particular manner of dress or personal appearance.

We expect that all students will meet our Uniform and Personal Appearance standards. Students should wear their uniforms with pride and follow the standards set by the School. Specifically, they should be dressed in the following:

• White School Logo Golf Shirt (September and Spring Dress) OR

• White Dress Shirt with School Tie (#1 School Uniform)

• Grey Pants

• Black Belt

• Grey Socks

• Polished Black Dress Shoes

• School Blazer (for Assembly and Special Occasions)

During school hours, students are not permitted to wear sweatshirts, hoodies, or jackets in the building. If students require warmer clothing in the winter, they are advised to purchase a school sweater or wear their school blazer.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is mandatory for all students. Being physically at school and working with classmates and teachers is a key component of the educational experience. If students are going to be absent from school for any reason, please communicate prior to the absence to our Attendance Clerk by emailing: senior_attendance@stgeorges.bc.ca or by leaving a voice message at: 604-221-3636.

SCHOOL ENTRY AND LATE STUDENTS

Arriving on time is essential for our student success. Students who are late for classes should go straight to their class and will be logged as late by their teacher. Students who demonstrate a pattern of tardiness will be held accountable and subject to school disciplinary action.

TECHNOLOGY

The use of laptops is an important part of the learning environment. All students are required to bring a charged laptop or tablet with them daily. These devices will allow them to connect to our Canvas Learning System as well as other applications used throughout the School.

During the 2025-26 Academic Year, St. George’s Senior School will continue with its restricted use of cell phones and personal data devices for entertainment purposes (games, videos). Students are not permitted to use technology of any type during their lunch period except for academic purposes, and only within designated areas (Learning Commons and areas supervised by a teacher or staff member) of the school.

The Cell Phone Use Policy has been updated and coincides with the order by the BC Ministry of Education to restrict cell phone use in schools throughout the province. As a School, we remain committed to providing educational experiences that are consistent with and utilize the world of interconnected technology.

SENIOR SCHOOL FOOD SERVICES AND LUNCHTIME

All students, including Grade 12s, will eat in Princeps Hall during the lunch period. Students may choose to bring their own lunch to Princeps Hall (microwaves available) or participate in the Hot Lunch Program.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Since we are moving to a new registration platform, all previous participants must re-register for the Hot Lunch Program.

Sign-up for the Hot Lunch Program is available HERE .

Students who bring their lunch from home are expected to recycle their lunch containers as appropriate.

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS:

Students with special diets will be accommodated. Please contact Ms. Julie Matandac, Food Services Supervisor, via email at: jmatandac@stgeorges.bc.ca.

Students are not permitted to order food from external food services unless authorized by school administration for club or group meeting purposes.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

• Food should not be eaten outside of Princeps Hall.

• Dishes should not be removed from Princeps Hall.
