Welcome to the new 2025–26 school year. I wonder what it will hold?
The wonderful thing about working in a school is that each year starts afresh. The successes and struggles of the previous year are gone, yesterday’s news. Instead, before us lies a fresh canvas with nothing on it. So much is possible.
Of course, momentum from your successes can carry forward into this from last year and similarly, you may worry that some struggles you had last year might bleed into this year. That’s fair to consider. But it does not diminish that we always start with that blank canvas. A fresh start. So much is possible. So with that optimism, welcome to the new school year!

Two months ago, I took the Grade 7 class to the south of France and Italy. In ten days, we took in as many museums and artifacts of early civilizations as we could. One monument we visited in Italy was the “Elephant and the Obelisk”. It was sculpted by Bernini in the 1600s and shows an elephant carrying a tall obelisk on its back. When we saw it in Rome, we were all confused. Why is the obelisk on the elephant’s back? And of all animals, why the elephant? The elephant was meant to depict strength, our tour guide explained. The obelisk represented wisdom passed down through the generations. And so, we learned the important symbolism of the statue: that it takes a strong mind to carry wisdom.
Families, this school year is going to be amazing for your son. He will learn new things, understand our Core Values more deeply, and hopefully grow in wisdom. Our faculty and staff will do everything we can to help your son develop the strength to carry all that he learns this year and allow it to shape him into a fine young man. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get going!
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION IS ON AUGUST 26:
For New Students: We look forward to welcoming new students at our New Student Orientation on Tuesday, August 26th. Students entering Grades 3–5 will have orientation from 9:30–11:30 am. Students entering Grades 6 & 7 will have orientation from 1:00–3:00 pm. Please bring a snack and a water bottle. Students may come in casual clothes.
FOR STUDENTS ENTERING KINDERGARTEN:
Each Kindergarten boy will receive information from the Kindergarten and Admissions Team regarding gradual entry for September 4–6. Kindergarten students should arrive for their gradual entry sessions dressed in their school-crested golf shirt, grey flannels, and black shoes. The school blazer is optional for the entire school year. The first full day of classes for Kindergarten is Monday, September 8th.
FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 1–7:
The first day of school will be Wednesday, September 3rd from 8:20 am–3:10 pm. All students should be dressed smartly in their #1 School Uniform: a blue blazer, grey flannels, grey socks, black shoes, a white shirt, and a school tie. New boys are asked not to wear a tie on the first day as they will be presented with a school tie during a Formal Assembly at the end of the day. All students are reminded to bring their gym strip. The boys will be in their homerooms from 8:20–11:25 am and then begin rotation in the afternoon. Grade 7 students trying out for the “A” Soccer Team should bring their soccer kit for tryouts after school.
PLEASE ENSURE STUDENTS ARRIVE ON TIME:
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for the boys to arrive on time. The purpose of morning homeroom time is to help the boys settle in and begin to focus on their day. They will have time in their homeroom to collect their materials, organize their books, and review their daily schedule. Teachers also use this time to share announcements, check prep books, and have class discussions. Boys who constantly arrive late are not organized and develop bad habits. Students should be at school by 8:20 am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and by 8:30 am on Wednesdays.
This year, we will be continuing our late start day on Wednesdays. Late Start Wednesdays allow our faculty to focus on boy-centred learning; examine and refine our teaching practices from Kindergarten to Grade 7; and continue to develop our rubrics and assessments. Collaboration time is essential for these projects, so we will use Wednesday mornings for our meeting time. Junior School faculty arrive early on Wednesday mornings to meet and work on our school goals. As a result, we are asking parents to drop their sons off between 8:20–8:30 am on Wednesday mornings only. We will not have supervision before 8:15 am on Wednesdays. The morning bell will ring at 8:30 am, and students will proceed to their homerooms and then attend the first period. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday morning, the school bell will ring at 8:20 am for the beginning of the day. This time of the day is very important for both our teachers and boys, as this is an opportunity for all to check in and organize the day ahead together.
CODE OF CONDUCT:
I would also like to draw your attention to our Code of Conduct. This document outlines our community values and is something that, upon enrollment or re-enrollment, each family commits to upholding.
EXPECTATIONS FOR ATTENDANCE:
In terms of expectations, we ask that families show commitment to our School. Regular attendance is outlined in our Code of Conduct. Students who play high-level sports of any kind are not permitted to miss school on a regular basis for practices. If they have occasional tournaments, they can request permission from their teacher and principal to miss some school. Attendance and participation are important and valued parts of our School Program and are included in our Code of Conduct.
We ask that all students be regularly picked up and dropped off by a parent, guardian, or caregiver. Please be respectful of other road users and pay particular attention to the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Please note that a 30km/h speed limit applies on West 29th and Chaldelcott Park, along West 33rd beside Memorial West Park, and along Camosun Street beside Southlands School.
To help with a safe and considerate arrival at school, we ask that you:
Have your son sit behind the passenger, on the right-hand side of the car, with his backpack on his lap. This will help keep traffic flowing and reduce the congestion on the narrow streets around the school.
Do NOT do a U-turn on any street. Doing a U-turn on Wallace, 29th, Camosun, or any of the other streets around the School can block traffic, making it worse for other drivers. We remind you that all U-turns in Vancouver are illegal.
Do not park close to corners, crosswalks, or in areas marked by signs. There needs to be visibility of pedestrians entering the crosswalk, so do not block this clearance. If you need to wait for your son, please find another area to do so. The parking authority can ticket accordingly.
We have designated drop-off and pick-up locations to maximize student safety and minimize traffic congestion. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please do not drop off and pick up on Wallace Street.
We also have a regular Bus Service that we encourage all boys to participate in to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Boys will not be permitted to use Uber, Lyft, or taxis as a form of transportation to or from school. We appreciate your support with this protocol. More information about designated student drop-off locations and Bus Service is provided in this digital book.
If your son rides his bike or scooter to school, we ask that you remind him about the importance of road safety and respecting all traffic signs. Your son should be equipped with a helmet and follow all safety rules. We ask that boys who bike or scooter be careful of vehicles on the road, especially as they turn into the Junior School property. Please take the necessary precautions.
Student safety is our number one priority, but sometimes critical incidents do occur. If this does happen, St. George’s School will contact you via text message and email. These communications will direct you to where to find more information (i.e., the school website) and/or when you can expect the next update.
You can also follow our Instagram account and website for updates during an emergency: Instagram: @saintsbc School Website: www.stgeorges.bc.ca
During the 2025–26 school year, you can expect to receive emails and text messages as part of our emergency preparedness drills, which involve conducting drills with students and staff.
If parents have any concerns about their son’s performance, they are encouraged to contact their homeroom teacher by phone, email, or schedule an appointment to meet. Parents should check the website frequently and be sure to read the weekly Saints eNews to keep themselves abreast of everything, including course outlines, athletic fixtures, and school announcements. The “My Resources” page of the website is also a helpful tool, as it provides invaluable information about the school’s policies and routines. As always, my door is open if you have any concerns — please phone or email me to make an appointment.
Lastly, parents are asked to mark Thursday, September 11th on their calendars for our Meet the Teacher Night. This is your opportunity to come into the School, meet your son’s subject teachers, and familiarize yourself with the expectations and routines of the classroom.
I look forward to seeing all the boys in September. In the meantime, have a restful and enjoyable remainder of the Summer Break!
Sincerely,
Ms. Karyn Roberts Principal, Junior School

When your son is absent, it is important you notify the school by 8:35 am, either by email junior_attendance@stgeorges.bc.ca or phone: 604-221-3901. All absences need to be accounted for either by note, email, or phone message. The School’s policy is that a child should attend school every day unless there are medical issues, bereavement in the family, or celebration of a religious holiday.
The Junior School’s Dress Code and Standards of Appearance exist to cultivate an educational setting where students are able to concentrate on learning in a safe and respectful environment. The Dress Code reflects our high standards of presentation and complements our expectations for work and behaviour. Students should wear their uniforms with pride and follow the standards set by the School. For September and October (until Thanksgiving), the Golf Shirt is acceptable for the uniform. Specifically, the uniform includes:
• White School Logo Golf Shirt (September–October 13 and April–June)
• White Dress Shirt with School Tie (Number One Uniform; October–April)
• Grey Pants
• Grey Socks
• Polished Black Dress Shoes (No black runners)
• School Blazer (For Assembly and Special Occasions)
• Primary boys (Kindergarten–Grade 3) may wear their golf shirts or buttoned-down shirts all year
Students are not permitted to wear sweatshirts or hoodies at school except during recess. If students require warmer clothing in the winter, they are advised to purchase a school sweater, vest, or wear their school blazer during the school day. For recess, boys can wear any brand of jacket or coat. We encourage students to dress for the weather, as every day is an outdoor day at the Junior School.
With respect to personal appearance, please be reminded that hair should be kept neat and off the collar, shaped close to the head, and away from the face. Please note that the School respects the religious or cultural traditions of our students who observe a particular manner of dress or grooming.
If you require a uniform, the School Store at the Junior School is open throughout the Summer Break. Appointments may be made by phoning the store at 604-221-3899 or emailing Ms. Ashwin Benny, Head of Retail Services, at: abenny@stgeorges.bc.ca.
Kindergarten boys will receive an invitation for gradual entry from the Kindergarten and Admissions Team. More information will be available in the invitation.

As a means of authentic sharing, we provide opportunities for students to communicate their learning to their families and to the wider school community through concerts, productions, and exhibitions. These opportunities are vital for students to explore different ways of knowing, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of their identity and the ever-changing world we live in.

Medical services at the Junior School are coordinated by Ms. Kelly Bodutch, Head of Student Health Services. The Student Health Centre for the Junior School is located in the Nursing Station on the first floor, adjacent to Devenish Gym. Nursing coverage is provided by Ms. Kelly Bodutch, Mrs. Ravinder Biling, and Ms. Jocelyn Smith.
For Kindergarten–Grade 3, drop-off and pick-up are at the east gate, near the Primary Playground. Another preferred option is to park on the street where signage permits, and walk in. We ask parents to please be mindful of the neighbours, as our School is located in a residential area.
For Grades 4–5, drop-off and pick-up are on West 29th Avenue at the Main (centre) Gates. Note that there is a “three-minute stopping only” zone in front of the School.
For Grades 6 and 7, drop-off and pick-up occur at Chaldecott Park. A crossing guard is provided to assist students across West 27th Avenue and Wallace Street. Students who have not been picked up by 3:55 pm will be walked back to the Main School Entrance.
When a student arrives after 8:30 am, he must sign in at the Front Office. If a parent wishes to take their son out during the day, it is important the student is signed out at the Front Office. This procedure is in place to ensure the School has an accurate record of who is in the building in case of emergencies that require evacuation, such as fire alarms and earthquakes.
The After School Care Program is offered daily from 3:00–5:30 pm in the Library when school is in session for students in Kindergarten-Grade 4. The After School Care Program is currently full and will begin the week of September 8th. The program provides a rich environment for play-based learning, projectbased exploration, and student-led inquiry. It also fosters meaningful cross-grade connections, giving boys the opportunity to collaborate, create, and build relationships beyond the traditional classroom setting. More information will be shared directly with families who have registered. If you have any questions, please contact our After School Care Coordinator, Ms. Jocelyn Schwalm, at: jschwalm@stgeorges.bc.ca.
For the most up-to-date information, please check out our online calendar on our website HERE.
