How can you manage student loan payments?

IF you have student loans, you likely received a “payment vacation” over the past few years, due to legislation related to COVID-19. But if you’re like millions of other borrowers, you may have recently been required to resume your payments. How will this affect your overall financial situation?

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the effect on your monthly cash flow. But the amount of pressure you feel will depend on your income and the size of the required payments. If these payments do represent a real challenge, you may need to adjust your budget and spending habits as best you can. However, there might be other steps you can take to help ease the burden or possibly reduce the repayment time.

Here are a few suggestions to consider:

• Sign up for autopay. Falling behind on your student loan payments can lead to late fees, and if you were to become truly delinquent, you could face even bigger troubles, such as wage garnishment. To avoid these problems, you can enroll in autopay, in which you move money automatically from a checking or savings account to your student loan provider. In addition to staying current on your loan, you might earn a .25 percent rate reduction, which is offered by many lenders and loan services to those who enroll in autopay.

• Refinance your loan. With a steady income, a reasonably good credit score and a manageable number of other debts, you might be able to refinance your student loan and reduce your interest rate, which will enable more of your monthly payments to go toward the principal.

• Look for employer benefits. Some employers

— typically the larger ones — offer student loan repayment help to employees, so check with your human resources department.

• Make extra payments. If you feel strapped just making your regular student loan payments, you may not be able to make extra ones. But if you can afford to add to your payments consistently, you could pay off your loan earlier than you had thought. But just because you make an extra payment, the money doesn’t necessarily go toward reducing your principal — student loan services generally apply payments first to late fees and then to accrued interest. If you pay online, you should have an option to apply extra payments to the principal. Your loan servicer could also provide you with other ways of paying more toward principal.

• Choose a payoff strategy. If you have multiple student loans, and you can make more than the minimum payments, you may want to be strategic in how you pay off your loans. You could choose the “snowball” method by getting rid of the smallest loans first — a technique that can give you feelings of momentum and satisfaction. Or you could take the “avalanche” approach by first going after the loans with the highest interest rates. Either route could save you more money in the long run.

It can certainly be challenging to deal with student loan debt. But with patience and diligence, and by exploring all your repayment options, you may be able to help yourself make progress toward putting these loans to rest.

An Update from SUSD Superintendent, Dr. Valenzuela

AS we speed toward the busy spring season, it is a good time to reflect upon the year’s progress thus far, and to look forward to the forthcoming future. If we think about where we were one year ago, there is much evidence of progress, and great hope as we look to the future. First, in the last couple of years, we launched the full time Sahuarita Digital Pathways Academy (SDPA). It was an entrepreneurial offspring of the pandemic era move to digital learning. What began as a small pilot project has grown into a fully accredited, fully online school and unique educational option for students. Just in one year, the enrollment has grown from 85 to the current 126 students. In addition, we have about 200 students from our brickand-mortar school programs accessing our new online platform, to get ahead or take other special courses to advance individual educational goals. It is part of our mission to meet the individual needs of each student. Last year, in advancement of safety objectives, we envisioned expansion of our highly successful School Resource Officer (SRO) program to the middle schools. Just this month, our new SRO, Ofc. Pelayo, began serving the youngsters at Sahuarita Middle School, Anza Trail K-8 and Wrightson Ridge K-8 schools. This was only possible through the shared commitment, resources, and dedication of the Sahuarita Police Department and our Sahuarita School District.

This year, we have expanded dual enrollment course offerings, in partnership with Pima Community College, to thirty courses available to take with both high school and college credit options, without any extra tuition. In addition, we have worked with Pima CC, Freeport McMoRan, Pima Foundation, Sahuarita Educational Enrichment Foundation (SEEF), and the Green Valley Masonic Lodge to build a $375,000 scholarship fund to provide two-year, full tuition scholarships, as much as possible, to our graduating seniors who are attending Pima as the first step on the postsecondary journey. This Pima FirstSahuarita WINS! Scholarship is a great, costeffective option to cover one’s first two years of college, professional training, or skilled certification education with very little cost. It is hoped to make this a sustainable and model program of how working together can make a difference, for individuals, and for the entire community.

In November, the wonderful Sahuarita community resoundingly passed a $50,000,000 bond package. This investment will make a transformational impact upon our physical facilities, program quality, and the overall future of Sahuarita as a community. These projects were identified through a communitywide outreach effort, and include safety measures like state-of-the-art security cameras, ballistic resistant glass, technology advancement and standardization, such as 1:1 device ratios and instructional classroom technology, new regular and special education classrooms, a full remodel of the Primary School Cafeteria and gym, a new 500 seat performing arts theater, NJROTC program expansion, flooring, paint, playground equipment, new preschool classrooms, and brand new modern turf surfaces for both high school stadiums.

Similarly, we have secured about $11,000,000 in State Facility Oversight Board (SFOB) funding to help meet capacity needs, specifically at Walden Grove HS. This project will similarly expand needed classroom space, specialty space in CTE and music, in addition to new tennis courts and a new wrestling room. Our Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in construction technology and architecture is finishing a complete tiny home, fully built, from design to final nail, by

our construction technology students. They will sell this home and use the proceeds to build the next one. This type of deep, applied learning represents future ready education and prepares young people with the skills to meet the demands of the complex and competitive world to which they are entering. It also helps support the meeting of high demand, high skilled workforce needs in our region. Similarly, with support of Pima Joint Technological Education District (JTED) funding and Sahuarita USD investment, we are planning to expand the automotive technology center at Sahuarita HS by adding another bay, to support program growth and meeting professional needs in this competitive and high demand field. We are also building an architecture design building space at Sahuarita HS to complement the construction technology program.

In the area of communication and outreach, this year we launched the Parent Square. This software resource provides quick, easy to use and integrated communication tools, which help advance our tireless commitment to responsive and meaningful communication with our families. If shares information about events, class operations and emergency notifications when needed.

In December, all of our schools received a special gift from the Country Fair White Elephant (CFWE) to support program initiatives This year, the total investment in our schools and programs totaled about $227,000. These dollars significantly expand and enrich the learning opportunities we deliver to students, through musical instruments, field trips, books, athletic equipment, and other resources that would otherwise be available in a lesser amount.

In summary, we are experiencing a remarkably good and successful year. And, I reflect with humble appreciation and gratitude for the spirit of community which binds us together in a shared commitment to making our schools, economy, workforce, and overall quality of life the very best that they can be. I believe this shared vision and culture will continue to move us forward, to meet challenges, find solutions, and continue in commitment to our mission of working as a team to help every student succeed. And, together, we will continue to make a difference!

• March 10 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 09:02 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• March 20 - March Equinox. The March equinox occurs at 03:01 UTC. The Sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is also the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere.

• March 24 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 18.7 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the

through May. The walk will be a mix of flat and steep and rocky. Be sure to wear proper footwear. Always bring water and a small snack. There is a $7 park entrance fee. Always remember to be aware of your surroundings as we share our desert with many creatures. Some days can get warm enough to awaken a hibernating reptile.

Starting from Catalina State Park, you wind your way up the rocky slopes of the Catalina Mountains for about 3-miles until you reach Romero Pools. Along the way, you see fields of 200-year-old saguaros and jagged rock outcroppings.

• March 25 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 07:02 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Worm Moon because this was the time of year when the ground would begin to soften and the earthworms would reappear. This moon has also been known as the Crow Moon, the Crust Moon, the Sap Moon, and the Lenten Moon.

• March 25 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's partial shadow, or penumbra. Rancho Sahuarita Hosts New "Trails and Tails Fun Walk"

ON SATURDAY, February 17th, residents of Rancho Sahuarita came together to take part in the community’s new “Trails and Tails Fun Walk” at Sahuarita Lake Park. Sunny weather and tons of family-friendly activities served as the backdrop for the Fun Walk, which challenged participants to take part in several activity stations along the way. The stations – designed to be fun, engaging and fitness-inspiring for the whole family – included tire flipping, jumping, hurdles, hopscotch, a climbing wall, a balance beam, limbo, and pushups.

Those who completed all the stations were entered in a raffle for the chance to win various prizes – including a new grill and treadmill. Medals were also given to residents as they completed the walk around the lake.

In addition to being a great opportunity to take in the outdoors and spend time with friends and neighbors, the event adds to the many existing events that invite residents to participate with their four-legged friends. The community also hosts Canines and Coffee, Pet Pictures with Santa, and a special Dog Halloween Costume Party throughout the year. Dog treats and bandanas were handed out for each of the dogs in attendance, and water stations were available throughout the route.

The event is also another example of Rancho Sahuarita’s commitment by the Health and Wellness Department to continue delivering fun and engaging programming to help residents meet their fitness and wellness goals. Already offering over 45 free group fitness classes per week, the Department has various events throughout the year designed for different ages and skill levels –

including Movin’ & Groovin’, Fitness for Two, Restorative Workshops, Healthy Living Series, Fall and Spring Break Kids Camps, Health and Wellness Fairs and more.

Jasmine Creason, Lifestyle Director for Rancho Sahuarita, shared: “We are always

striving to better the lives of our residents, and events like Trails and Tails is another way to do just that. Bringing families together to explore everything our community has to offer is a major goal for our team, and it is our hope that we can get even more residents to join in the future.”

Palm Sunday

PALM Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week in the Christian calendar, commemorating Jesus Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, while crowds greeted him with palm branches, symbolizing victory and honor. This event fulfills the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9, emphasizing Jesus' role as the Messiah. The significance of Jesus choosing a donkey, a symbol of peace, contrasts with the expectation of a triumphant military leader.

The timing of Palm Sunday aligns with the Jewish festival of Passover, adding depth to its significance. Passover commemorates the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt, symbolizing freedom and redemption. Jesus' entry into Jerusalem during Passover underscores the parallels between the Old Testament deliverance and the spiritual liberation he offers. The waving of palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna" reflect the crowd's recognition of Jesus as their deliverer.

Palm Sunday also sets the stage for the events leading to Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. The joyful atmosphere of his entry into Jerusalem quickly shifts as the week progresses. The same crowd that hailed him as king would later demand his crucifixion. This juxtaposition highlights the fickleness of human allegiance and foreshadows the depth of Jesus' sacrifice. His willingness to endure

suffering and death exemplifies his ultimate mission of redemption and salvation.

The palm branches used on Palm Sunday carry symbolic significance beyond their historical context. In Christian tradition, palms symbolize victory, triumph, and eternal life. The act of waving palms during Palm Sunday processions is a symbolic gesture of welcoming Jesus into our lives and acknowledging him as our King and Savior. Churches often bless palm branches on this day, and the faithful take them home as a reminder of Jesus' triumph over sin and death.

Palm Sunday serves as a reminder of the humility and servant leadership embodied by Jesus. Despite being hailed as a king, he

chose to enter Jerusalem humbly, riding on a donkey. This act illustrates his teachings on the importance of humility and service. Palm Sunday challenges believers to reflect on their own lives and embrace the values of humility, compassion, and sacrificial love.

Palm Sunday holds deep significance in the Christian faith, marking the beginning of Holy Week and commemorating Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. It serves as a reminder of Jesus' role as the promised Messiah, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies. The events of Palm Sunday foreshadow the ultimate sacrifice Jesus would make for humanity's redemption. As believers, Palm Sunday invites us to reflect on our own allegiance to Christ and embrace the values of humility, service, and sacrificial love.
