As summer came to a close, the return of our faculty, students, and parents filled our campus with renewed energy and excitement! The absence of lively hallway chatter, carpool conversations, and engaging classroom discussions made the summer seem longer than usual. Now, with the start of the 2024-2025 school year, the vibrancy and enthusiasm have returned, marking a fresh beginning for all of us at Sagemont Prep.
At Sagemont Prep, our mission is to continually enhance our programs and build upon what we have established. We carefully consider our students' diverse backgrounds to ensure we honor and respect each individual’s heritage. This commitment is central to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that meets every student's needs. Understanding our students’ backgrounds—whether cultural, linguistic, or personal—strengthens our ability to form meaningful connections. These relationships are crucial for delivering quality education, as they enhance engagement, motivation, and trust, ultimately enriching our students' learning experiences.
Embracing and recognizing the diversity within our student body is more than just a theoretical ideal; it is a practical necessity. With our student body representing 31 different countries, we are proud to be named by Niche the #1 Most Diverse Private School in Florida! This recognition underscores the importance of integrating diversity into every aspect of our educational approach. By acknowledging and responding to our students' varied backgrounds—cultural heritage, language, perspectives, and personal experiences—our Sagemont Prep faculty tailor their instruction to make content more relevant and equitable, which drives academic success.
To support this commitment, our first day of faculty and staff professional development was designed to showcase the real-world application of these principles. Instead of staying on campus, our team embarked on a field trip to Big Cypress, home of the Seminole Tribe. The day included visiting the AhTah-Thi-Ki Museum, offering insights into the Seminole Tribe's history and culture. We also explored Center-Based Learning, a method that emphasizes personalized instruction by allowing students to engage with content through various stations and activities tailored to their needs and backgrounds. This approach ensures that learning is more relevant and engaging by incorporating our students' diverse experiences into the subject matter. (see pictures from the day in the gallery section)
Our focus on real-world applications extends beyond professional development. Our approach to student learning and preparation for a globalized world reflects it. By embedding diverse perspectives into our curriculum and teaching methods, we help students develop a broader and more nuanced understanding of the world. This prepares them to navigate and contribute to a complex, interconnected global society.
At Sagemont Prep, we believe that teaching and learning should always reflect our students' global citizenship. By continuously embracing and celebrating diversity, we ensure that our educational practices are inclusive, inspiring, and impactful.
Here’s to a fantastic new school year filled with growth, discovery, and meaningful connections!
Sincerely yours in transformative educational excellence, Mellesia Nelson
As we send off the Class of 2024 to an incredible new start at college, we also embark on a new school year filled with endless possibilities. Every moment offers students the chance to learn something new, challenge themselves, and grow in ways they never imagined. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or through personal interactions, each day provides a fresh start to set goals, pursue passions, and build meaningful connections. This year is a blank canvas what students choose to do with it is entirely up to them Embrace every moment, take risks, and make the most of the opportunities that come your way
The newly enhanced Advisory Program at the Upper Campus serves as a crucial support system, offering a safe and trusted space for students to engage in meaningful discussions and become actively involved in building a strong, healthy school community where they can thrive. Advisory meets weekly for a one-hour session, during which students participate in targeted, grade-specific lessons. These range from college test prep strategies for high school students to organizational workshops for middle school students. The program begins with a strong emphasis on team building, fostering a culture of collaboration and helping students forge new and lasting friendships.
Learning about goal setting, time management, and taking ownership and accountability of one’s education is essential for personal and academic success. These skills empower students to take control of their learning journey, allowing them to set clear, achievable goals and manage their time effectively to reach them. By understanding how to prioritize tasks and break down larger objectives into manageable steps, students can reduce stress and stay focused on what matters most Taking ownership and being accountable for their education involves recognizing their active role in achieving success This approach fosters personal growth and encourages students to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks, which is essential not only for academic success but also for thriving in all areas of life.
The Advisory Program supports this development by promoting a growth mindset and reflective practices. Advisory provides a space for students to create digital portfolios that document their learning journey, guiding the annual Student-Led Conferences. These conferences offer a powerful opportunity for students to share their progress and insights with their families.
At Sagemont Prep, every student from Early Childhood through Senior year embarks on a journey of continuous growth and self-discovery through the creation of dynamic digital portfolios This "living and breathing" platform is not just a storage of achievements, but a celebration of resilience, reflecting how students learn, evolve, and grow from their experiences, including their setbacks. Embracing a growth mindset is at the core of the Sagemont Prep experience, with reflective practices seamlessly integrated into the curriculum. These portfolios become a rich tapestry of each student's unique journey, showcasing vision boards, reference letters, certificates, writing samples, projects, artwork, videos, and more. By building and enhancing their digital portfolios year after year, students document their academic and personal growth, crafting a powerful narrative of their abilities and accomplishments. These portfolios are not only a tool for self-reflection but also a compelling showcase for college admissions and student-led conferences, representing the full spectrum of their growth and potential at Sagemont Prep
Student life at Sagemont Prep is rich and engaging Whether students are new to our community or a returning student, participating in co-curricular activities like clubs, honor societies, and athletics can greatly enrich the school experience.
At Sagemont Prep, all of our clubs are student-proposed and led, offering a unique opportunity to pursue passions while honing leadership skills. Our student chancellors coordinate the activities, ensuring that each club operates smoothly and stays true to its mission. Additionally, every club is self-funded and entrepreneurial, encouraging students to develop resourcefulness and creativity in managing their initiatives
For our new students, joining these clubs is an excellent way to meet friends who share your interests. Whether you are passionate about the arts, sciences, sports, or service, there is programming available. These connections can make your transition smoother and more enjoyable, helping you feel more at home in our school.
Beyond the immediate benefits of friendship and fun, involvement in these activities is also crucial for your future. Colleges and universities are looking for well-rounded students who demonstrate a commitment to their passions both in and out of the classroom. By engaging in a variety of activities now, you will begin to build a diversified resume that showcases your unique talents, leadership skills, and dedication.
Monica Vigna, Lower Campus Principal

As the school year commences, communication will remain a priority through platforms like the BAND app, newsletters, emails, social media, student folders, and conferences. We will be enhancing our communication with families and introducing a new newsletter, the "Roaring Lions Gazette." This gazette will showcase schoolwide evidence of a project-based curriculum and serve as a planning tool for school events and activities.
At Sagemont Prep, our Educational Pillars guide everything we do, ensuring students acquire essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity We foster an environment where students are encouraged to inquire, innovate, take risks, and explore. These pillars are integrated across all curricular areas, specials, signature projects, and more.
In Early Childhood, educators will continue with the Links to Learning curriculum, incorporating domains and language components, with increased communication through "Week At a Glance" and "Month At a Glance" updates.
Our educators will continue to employ high-impact instructional strategies and engage students through our curriculum and grade-level specific signature projects. students to explore their passions. Our restructured aftercare program now includes diverse activities like cooking, art, and study hall, reflecting our dedication to holistic student development.
We are eager to embark on this educational journey with our students, encouraging them to challenge themselves, take risks, and achieve their full potential. Alongside academic growth, we prioritize values such as integrity, acceptance, empathy, and courage
As we kick off another school year at Sagemont Prep, we celebrate the spirit of learning, exploration, and discovery that defines our community. Let's embrace the opportunities it brings and strive for excellence in everything we do. Together, we can make this a year to remember one filled with achievements, growth, and unforgettable memories.
Tera Sweeting, College Counselor
This summer, Sagemont Prep students made the most of their time by diving into a range of enriching programs and opportunities. Our college counseling program has played a key role in guiding students as they explored various college programs, internships, and pre-college experiences. With a focus on their future careers, our students engaged in a wide array of summer programs, including the arts, social sciences, law, criminal justice, health sciences, and engineering. These immersive experiences, often on their dream college campuses and alongside peers from around the globe, have offered invaluable insights into their chosen majors and future professions
While our students were busy embracing their higher education programs, my commitment remained steadfast: to be the best possible resource for our Sagemont Prep students. This summer, I was privileged to tour several prestigious universities in Boston, each offering a unique perspective on higher education. My visits included institutions of varying sizes, such as Tufts University, Boston College, Boston University, Babson College, and Berklee College of Music.
During these tours, I had the opportunity to connect with college admissions representatives, forging meaningful relationships that will enable me to advocate more effectively for our Sagemont Prep students. While visiting each campus, I explored summer program opportunities, pre-college options, scholarship applications, and strategies for applying to their campuses. As I walked through the vibrant campuses and met college students attending summer classes, I couldn't help but think of the perfect fit for our Sagemont Prep students. By asking probing questions about academic programs and rigor, I kept a list of students in mind who would not only excel academically but also feel at home, even if they were out of state.
This year, I aim to bring a wealth of knowledge and representation from college professionals across various facets of higher education. Touring the New England area has inspired me to broaden the scope of opportunities I present to our students, showcasing the vast possibilities higher education offers beyond the classroom in areas of residential life, student affairs, athletics, study abroad opportunities, and the broad spectrum of campus life. When Sagemont Prep students graduate, they will be fully prepared for all aspects of higher education, whether they remain local, venture out of state, or go to another country.
We are laying the groundwork for our students' future achievements by fostering an environment that emphasizes college success beyond academics This comprehensive approach will help them thrive academically and socially while increasing retention rates in their first year of college, ensuring that the foundation for their success has been solidly established. Enjoy the photos of the students and myself exploring academic possibilities. If you would like to read more about our individual students, visit our social media sites, where we spotlight each student’s summer program or pre-college exploration, @sagemontprepcollegecounseling.
Luann Burrows, Lower Campus School Counselor
We were absolutely thrilled to welcome our Lions back to school! This summer was especially rewarding, as I had the pleasure of meeting all the new families who have joined our Sagemont Prep community. Our school’s diversity continues to grow, and we are proud to share that we now represent 31 nationalities for the 2024-2025 school year Our returning students excitedly met their new classmates and soon-to-be friends A diverse student body creates a dynamic environment that promotes global citizenship, where students learn to embrace different perspectives and experiences, fostering empathy and compassion.
Last school year, we introduced the digital Social-Emotional Curriculum, Second Step, for Kindergarten through Grade 5. Through this program, students explored developing a growth mindset, goal setting, managing emotions, empathy and kindness, and problem-solving. I am excited to continue this valuable, research-based curriculum designed to help students build essential social-emotional skills, nurture relationships, manage emotions, and achieve their goals, setting them up to thrive in school and life.
This year, we are enhancing our Social-Emotional Curriculum by introducing The Zones of Regulation, created by Leah M. Kuypers, MA Ed. As Kuypers noted, "Too often students struggle to keep it together …while falling apart." Students' strengths and abilities are sometimes overshadowed by their challenges and disruptive behaviors. Dr. Ross Greene, a leading psychologist in treating explosive children, emphasizes that instead of merely pointing out behavioral issues, we must help students develop the skills to manage them In my 33 years of experience as a teacher, school counselor, and parent coach, I have learned that no student wants to be labeled. However, they may need direct tools and ample opportunities to practice new behaviors. The Zones of Regulation curriculum is designed to help students consciously regulate their emotions, enhancing their self-control and problem-solving abilities. I look forward to collaborating with our teachers to develop a toolkit of calming strategies that can be used in a safe and supportive environment.
A school-to-home solid connection is a critical component that allows students to benefit from our social-emotional programs. Parents, as the true experts on their children, play an essential role in this process. Research has shown that students whose parents remain actively involved in their education perform better academically, attend school more regularly, demonstrate better social skills, and are more motivated (Miranda, Presentación, & Soriano, 2002; Sofronoff, 2005).
In early October, after students and teachers have settled into their routines, I will prepare a series of workshops for parents. I aim to establish and maintain open communication between home and school Following the launch of The Zones of Regulation, parents will receive an invitation We will build a strong home-school connection as a team and witness our students thrive and reach their full potential at Sagemont Prep
Yasmine Mohamed, Upper Campus School Counselor
We are thrilled to see all students back on campus! It has been a quiet summer without them, and we were eager for their return. Many of them have had growth spurts, explored new interests, traveled, and gained more confidence in the person they are becoming. We are all so excited to hear about their summer adventures.
This school year will be intentional about student growth in and out of the classroom, through the advisory program. Advisory has been built into the bell schedule for every Wednesday starting the first week of school all the way through the end of April 2025. Advisory is meant to focus on skill building outside of academics to ensure each student graduates from Sagemont Preparatory School with superior academics and strong interpersonal skills. Some of the topics include time management/organizational skills, situational awareness, personal identity, communication skills, conflict resolution, healthy relationships, mental health and wellness, and so much more!
In addition, last year, all of the 9th graders completed a Career Assessment with me that related their personality type to an extensive array of careers. The purpose of this assessment was to encourage students to begin exploring their career interests and introduce them to new careers that they may not have heard of or considered. With this insight, students can be more purposeful with their academic track in high school. Ms. Sweeting would then work with these students by reviewing their Career Assessments and making recommendations on summer programs and colleges that may interest them. We are happy to announce that this school year, the Career Assessment will be offered to both 8th graders and 9th graders.
The Peer Counseling On Campus Group, which kicked off in April 2024, will continue this school year! During the last few months of the 23-24 school year, these students played a vital role in supporting the well-being of their peers on campus. This year, they will learn how to identify when a peer is distressed, the fundamentals of depression and anxiety, and basic crisis intervention skills. Many of these students have shown an interest in pursuing psychology, psychiatry, forensics, and/or law, and they are excited to begin learning these essential skills!
I look forward to working alongside these students to ensure that every student on our campus feels seen and heard. The Peer Counseling On Campus group is open to all high school students; if a student is interested in joining, please stop by my office!
Shane Marcey, Director of Athletics
It is hard to believe that the 2024-25 school year is already here, and the Sagemont Prep Athletic Department has hit the ground running! We worked tirelessly throughout the summer, preparing, improving, and implementing new opportunities to continue enhancing the athletic experience for all our student-athletes. Before diving into all of the initiatives and programs we are offering this school year, let’s take a moment to reflect on our successes from 2023-24!
Our women’s golf team once again dominated South Florida, winning both the East and West Coast SFPGA events, the Maverick Invite, and capping it all off with a district championship! Standout junior Ariana Silva clinched 1st place in each of these events The women’s volleyball team started their season with an impressive 16 straight wins and reached the regional semifinals for the first time in six years. The men’s basketball team made history by winning back-to-back state championships our fourth overall while Kevin Thomas, Ricky Liburd, and Coach David Roe earned First Team All-County honors! Our middle school program became even more robust with the addition of flag football, tennis, and track. To top it all off, we celebrated ten senior athletes who signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level!
We’re excited to announce several new programs this year, especially at the elementary level. The athletic department will now offer volleyball, flag football, swimming, soccer, basketball, and track for both boys and girls at our Lower Campus! Junior varsity volleyball is back, and the team has been working hard since July. We are also hopeful to field a women’s JV basketball team this winter We are looking to enhance our spring season by strengthening our middle school track and tennis rosters while adding boys' volleyball to the mix. Additionally, our women’s varsity beach volleyball team is now eligible to compete in the FHSAA State Series and aims to build on their indoor success!
No matter your child’s passion, we hope they choose to join one of our athletic programs this year. We believe that many core values, such as integrity, commitment, self-discipline, sacrifice, and sportsmanship, can be learned through athletics.
All important information can be found on the Athletics page under the Student Life tab at www.sagemont.com. As always, follow us on Instagram @sagemontprepathletics and keep an eye out for emails with updated information throughout the year. GO LIONS!!!
Estefania Martinez, Innovation & Technology Coordinator
Welcome new and returning students and families to the 20242025 school year! As the Technology and Innovation Coordinator serving students and staff on both campuses, I look forward to continuing to support the integration of technology and innovation in our everyday learning. We are so excited for all that is to come this school year with Technology and Innovation. Here's a little glimpse into this school year.
This year, our science departments across both campuses will use Vibe boards in their classrooms. Vibe boards are interactive digital whiteboards that combine touchscreen capabilities with collaborative software, allowing for dynamic and engaging lessons They can be used in the classroom for brainstorming, real-time problem-solving, and multimedia presentations, enhancing student participation and teacher instruction. Educators can create a more interactive and innovative learning environment that fosters creativity and collaboration by integrating Vibe boards. We are so thankful for the 2024 Sagemont Prep Gala and all of the generous donations received to make our vision a reality!
Our science departments will also be integrating Vernier probe labs into their classrooms. Vernier probe labs are educational tools designed to measure various physical quantities, such as temperature, pH, light intensity, and more, using sophisticated sensors connected to data-logging software. In the upcoming school year, we plan to integrate Vernier probe labs into our innovative curriculum to enhance hands-on learning and realtime data collection By utilizing these probes, students will engage in more interactive experiments, gain practical experience with data analysis, and develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts through direct observation and measurement.
This year, I look forward to providing professional development on AI for our amazing faculty and staff! We offer workshops and training sessions to equip educators with the skills to integrate AI tools into their teaching practices, enhancing lesson delivery and administrative efficiency. Embracing AI technology will streamline educational processes and empower our community to leverage cutting-edge tools for improved learning outcomes and innovative problemsolving!

How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions?
Sagemont Prep played a pivotal role in igniting my passion by allowing me to explore various academic and extracurricular paths. By the time I reached high school and began thinking about college, I felt confident in my direction. I always excelled in Science, and when I transitioned to the Upper Campus, I delved deeper into Anatomy and Physiology and Physics, which opened my eyes to the world of Engineering With the guidance of my teachers and Mrs Nelson in the College Counseling office, I was able to tailor my remaining high school years to focus on activities that not only prepared me for a competitive college application but also equipped me to handle the rigor of college courses. I still credit Mr. Leip for helping me achieve an A in Georgia Tech’s notoriously challenging Calculus I course. Beyond academics, Sagemont Prep nurtured my creative side, which led me to pursue a minor in Industrial Design. To this day, my presentation skills and “stage presence,” often commented on in business school, are a testament to the well-rounded foundation I built at Sagemont Prep.
This is such a difficult question because I had so many incredible teachers who influenced me in different ways. Mrs. Safont sparked my passion for medical and life sciences; I knew I found my niche in her class. She constantly challenged me and even let me assist her after class, which deepened my understanding. Mr. Leip expanded my horizons, showing me that I could be more than a biologist that I could apply math to solve some of the most challenging problems as an engineer. Ms. Sponnoble, on the other hand, taught me how to write effectively a skill I've found invaluable as an engineer when preparing for FDA submissions. Lastly, Coach Marcey instilled the values of teamwork and grit through my years in the volleyball program.
You are in an amazing place to learn, grow, and be involved in everything: take advantage of this! Looking back as an adult, I never would have thought that my breadth of experiences would have shaped who I am as a person and my strengths, but it really has. Now is the time to learn, to fail, to get better, and to put yourself out there!
Undergraduate: Bachelor of Science in Medical Engineering
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Jonathan is currently a General Engineer, In-Service Engineering Agent for Submarine Escape Systems at the Department of the Navy Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Life After Sagemont Prep:
Since graduating, I've had the opportunity to explore new places and enjoy new experiences. I moved to Massachusetts for college and spent a few months in New Zealand for my junior year project Afterward, I relocated to New Hampshire for work, which has given me the ability to travel extensively, both across the country and overseas.
How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions?
Being part of the Drama Club helped me build confidence and improve my public speaking skills while deepening my appreciation for the performing arts. My biology and physics classes fueled my curiosity and solidified my decision to pursue a career in STEM.
Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration:
My Sagemont Prep inspiration was Mr. Fritz Leip, my physics teacher. I always looked forward to his classes and the experiments he devised for us to perform. He was able to engage the class and make what could have been dry bookwork exciting by showing us practical demonstrations of the various concepts
Words of Advice:
Life is never what you expect it to be and can take you in directions you never imagined. Don’t let fear or doubt stop you from taking the opportunities that present themselves.
Jonathan started at Sagemont Prep in the 6th Grade!
Undergraduate: Bachelor of Business Administration, Marketing
Florida Atlantic University
Alex is currently the Director of Social Media Digital Breakthru LLC.
Flash forward a little over a decade since graduating high school, I’ve gotten the chance to work with artists across multiple genres (my favorites are rock and metal). I have conceptualized and executed marketing campaigns that resulted in a few #1 Billboard 200 albums and sold-out tours. Now, 8 years into my career, I’m a small business owner with my own social media marketing agency. On the non-work side of things, I love traveling and hiking. I have visited Norway, Spain, France, Switzerland, Canada, and several national parks around the US. I also play tennis at a competitive club level.
How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions?
Three electives of mine - Theatre, Film, and a virtual Web Design class inspired me to pursue my passion for working in the music industry. My theatre class taught me how to be more comfortable speaking in front of a crowd, my film class introduced different video editing techniques, and my web design class taught me how to design, code, and host a website. With that knowledge, I set out to create fan clubs for my favorite singers, designing and coding websites from scratch and immersing myself in ...... social media marketing. As my fan clubs grew in popularity, so did other opportunities, like sit-down interviews with singers and editing the footage into clips for social media. What started as a hobby when I was fifteen soon became a professional career.
Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration:
Ms Gonzales-LaFleur was one of my inspirations while I was a student at Sagemont Prep. She sparked my curiosity about different ways to tell a story, encouraging me to experiment with varying styles of filmmaking and “color outside the lines.” I’ve been able to apply that across my professional career. It’s all about conveying and understanding a message; there’s no pre-defined “perfect” way of saying something.
Words of Advice:
Don’t be afraid to get out there and try new things. Enjoy the quiet moments and downtime. Things have a way of working out if one door closes, opportunity might be right around the corner.
Undergraduate: Bachelor of Arts Theater
Florida Atlantic University
Graduate: Master of Business Administration
Florida Atlantic University
Adriana is currently the Ticketing Services Supervisor at the Broward Center for Performing Arts.
I recently started grad school, pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Data Analytics from Florida Atlantic University. Additionally, I’m training for my first half marathon. One of my most exciting experiences was working on a project for Imagineering, where I helped film their new safety video for Kilimanjaro Safaris at Animal Kingdom You can even spot me in the video if you look real close!
How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions?
The upperclassmen at Sagemont Prep were a true source of inspiration, setting the standard for all of us to follow Whether in sports, academics, or the arts, they exemplified the qualities I strived to achieve.
Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration:
There were so many! I have learned something valuable from each one. Mrs. Yasmin gave me confidence in my reading abilities, and I credit her class as the catalyst for my career in the arts. I am grateful for her sharp wit, which taught me the art of a good comeback. Mrs. Safont inspired my impeccable fashion sense and a level of grace I am still striving to achieve. Mr. Roe's catchphrases are etched in my mind: 'You can’t win them all,' and 'Everybody acts in their own selfinterest.' While simple, these sayings have been the pillars of my persistent perseverance.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions. I used to feel self-conscious, worrying it might make me seem unprepared. In hindsight, I realize that asking questions is essential to learning. By not speaking up, I missed valuable opportunities to clarify concepts and deepen my understanding If I had asked more questions, I’m sure I would have performed better on tests and gotten more from my classes. Embrace curiosity it’s a key to success.
