A Seat at the Table: Conversations That Connect Us

Lions Table Talk began as a student-led vision by Annave Noel (Class of 2023) and Serena Mair (Class of 2024) to create a spotlight for voices within and beyond our school community Since its start in 2022, this studentled talk-show format has invited middle and high schoolers to lead meaningful conversations with local leaders, alumni, and peers. This year’s Lions Table Talk crew Eshan Peshimam, Jatavia Sweeting, and Rami Shihadeh carried the tradition forward with depth and heart.

The program expanded this year to include Cubs Table Talk, welcoming 4th and 5th-grade students into the conversation. The result was a full-circle celebration of student voice, perspective, and leadership across all grade levels.

This year’s focus turned inward, celebrating the journeys of our alumni and current students. The series opened with professional basketball player and author Jeff Coby, followed by a college panel featuring seven Sagemont Prep alumni: Adrian Cruz (Class of 2022), Annabella Vigna (Class of 2022), Breya Gutterman (Class of 2023), Miguel Moreda (Class of 2024), Dominic Issa (Class of 2024), Sean Jean-Mary (Class of 2024), and Annave Noel (Class of 2023). One standout moment during our college alumni panel was a question from 6th grader Jaden Oseola, who wanted to know, “If you (each alumni) could go back to 9th grade, what advice would you give yourself?” The panel’s responses were honest, heartfelt, and full of meaningful reflection. You can read more from our alumni later in this issue

Cubs Table Talk continued the journey by introducing younger students to entrepreneurial thinkers like Jatavia Sweeting (Class of 2025), founder of Toi’s Treasure, and Weston business leader Kurt Asesor, owner of XPLeague and Premier Martial Arts. Their message to students was simple but powerful: You’re never too young to think big or boldly.

Our Cubs Table Talk panel Zain Peshimam, Mila Toure, Alex Fernandez, Kailani White, Julia Mwanza, Natalie Sorokin, Ruben Jimenez, Stella Martarian, Nathaniel Glanville, and Valeria Aguilar—turned the spotlight on two incredible middle school students and more. They interviewed 8 grader Eshan Peshimam, a recent speaker at the National Association of Secondary School Principals Conference, and 6 grader Isabella Williams, whose passion for environmental advocacy is inspiring.

th

Using Zoom, our Cubs Table Talk crew connected with an alumnus now traveling abroad after his recent graduation from Tufts University, Blake Freedland, who, in his last year at Tufts University, designed a new course alongside his professors, coined “Defying Gravity: Exploring Aviation & the Psychology of Flight.” Rounding out the season of interviews was professional soccer player and former Sagemont Prep student Mauricio Reygagdes, who shared his thoughtful reflections on growing up and competing on a global stage at a young age

This year was a true success with our Cubs and Lions Table Talk crew. Through thoughtful, student-crafted questions, they helped our community explore and celebrate the journeys of those whose paths remain connected to Sagemont Prep reminding us all that it’s never too early to think big and boldly. This school year, Sagemont Prep embraced a bold and inspiring theme: The Competitive Edge. With an intentional focus on expanding opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, pursue real-world challenges, and prepare for college and careers, our Lions have shown they are more than ready to rise and compete on every stage. From nationally recognized math modeling to poetry slams, medical competitions, space simulations, and state championships, our students showcased the kind of drive and excellence that set them apart

Among the standout academic accomplishments was the performance of Jatavia Sweeting, Omar Jimenez Walton, and Chris Zheng in the MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge. Under the mentorship of Ms. Mejias, their work earned an Honorable Mention one of only 19 recognitions from 794 teams nationwide, placing them in the top 4%. Their creative and clear solution to a complex real-world problem earned them a $1,000 scholarship to be shared and applied toward future college tuition.

Sagemont Prep students also made an impressive entrance into the literary arts scene. Ayah Murtada, Baron Hill, Isaiah Wintz, and Kassandra Landaverde competed in the school’s first appearance at the Louder Than A Bomb Poetry Semifinals at the Victory Black Box Theater in Fort Lauderdale, earning a 3rd place finish with their original spoken-word performances. Middle schoolers Sofia Martinez and Paulina Perez-Verdia were also honored for their work in the Panther’s Poetry Project, sponsored by the Florida Panthers and the Jason Taylor Foundation. Writing on the theme “It’s Time to Hunt,” Sofia won first place and Paulina secured second place among all submissions earning them an exclusive arena tour and recognition alongside other talented poets from across Broward County

In the sciences, students competed with rigor and determination. Several Sagemont Prep students participated in Chemistry Olympiad, a notoriously challenging exam designed to test content well beyond the AP curriculum. Our students scored well above the South Florida regional average, a

significant achievement given the high-level content and the preparation required to succeed

Sagemont Prep’s Astronaut Challenge Teams, Mercury and Apollo, represented Sagemont Prep at the Kennedy Space Center, taking on high-stakes spaceflight and landing simulations, engineering challenges, and problem-solving tasks. Judged by engineers and astronauts from Blue Origin, the students demonstrated elite teamwork, technical knowledge, and a passion for space exploration in this extraordinary competition.

In health science, our middle school HOSA pre-med students proved their dedication and competitive spirit at the Regional HOSA Competition at American Heritage. Julien Barnes took first place in Foundations of Veterinary Science, Alexis Placa earned first place in Health Career Exploration, Jasmin Garcia earned second place in Foundations of Medical Terminology, Brianna Mujica took second place in Foundations of Veterinary Science, and Salma Sookralli earned fourth place in the same category Their achievements reflect both hard work and deep interest in future healthcare careers.

Sagemont Prep’s athletic excellence continued to soar this year. The Boys’ Basketball Team captured its third consecutive state championship title, building a legacy of success and perseverance. At the same time, the Girls' Volleyball Team clinched a district title, showing grit, teamwork, and skill.

The arts also continued to thrive, with six out of eight Sagemont Prep students who entered the Weston Student Artist Showcase earning awards for their work. Their pieces are now proudly displayed at community venues like Shibuya, demonstrating that

creativity, like competition, can leave a lasting impact on the world around us. The Synergy rock band and drumline showcased their talent from the stages of Hard Rock to Universal, and ensured their music reached a broad audience by professionally recording and distributing the classic “Don’t Stop Believing ”

The aerial drones team, Lion Wings, has been victorious since the team’s inception two years ago, and continuously brings home wins in airmanship, mission skills and teamwork and is ranked fourth in the nation.

We also celebrated a powerful example of student leadership in action. Eshan Peshimam, an 8th-grade student, was selected as the only middle school presenter at the 2025 National Honor Society & National Association of Student Councils Conference in Chicago. Under the guidance of Mrs. Martin and before an audience of more than 1,800 attendees from around the world, Eshan led a dynamic workshop on time management, sharing his empowering mantra: “Take time to make time.” His performance not only inspired future leaders but also reflected the confidence and innovation that defines a Sagemont Prep education.

This year, Sagemont Prep redefined what it means to have a competitive edge. By providing platforms for our students to explore passions, engage in real-world challenges, and reach for excellence, we’ve seen incredible growth and achievement Our Lions continue to show the world what is possible when talent meets opportunity and this is just the beginning

As we close out a vibrant year for our preschool through fifth-grade students, we reflect on a journey of curiosity, creativity, and a deep commitment to the Sagemont Prep Educational Pillars. Responsible risk-taking, analytical thinking, reflection, collaboration, and curiosity are more than just values; they are embedded in every classroom experience, project, and conversation. Our students do not simply learn content. They develop their voices, build character, and discover confidence in themselves and in one another.

From our youngest learners to our graduating fifth graders, each student experienced a school year rooted in exploration and inquiry Our educators thoughtfully designed interdisciplinary projects that blended literacy, mathematics, science, and the arts These meaningful learning opportunities encouraged students to make connections across subjects, investigate real-world questions, communicate their thinking, and collaborate with growing independence and empathy.

Throughout the year, students embraced academic risk-taking by sharing their ideas, asking thoughtful questions, and learning from mistakes. Their natural curiosity was nurtured within a safe, inclusive learning environment that promoted respect, reflection, and a strong sense of community. At Sagemont Prep, learning goes beyond academics. It includes social-emotional development and encourages each child to grow with purpose and confidence.

Family partnerships played an essential role in this success. Whether through classroom volunteering, attending events, or celebrating student work during the Signature Project Showcase, our families enhanced the learning experience and strengthened the connection between home and school. Together, we cultivated an environment where every student was seen, valued, and empowered to succeed

Classroom highlights throughout the year showcased the vibrancy of our academic and enrichment programs. In preschool, students engaged in hands-on STEM experiences that encouraged exploration, creativity, and critical thinking. Through playful investigations, they explored concepts like motion and force, built structures, tested ideas, and made observations both in the classroom and outdoors.

Pre-K students collaborated to study bees and butterflies, building observation and comparison skills through group discussions and journaling. Their learning culminated in a joyful butterfly release in the outdoor classroom, turning science into a lasting memory of wonder and connection with nature.

Kindergarteners developed strong number sense by using base-ten blocks, number charts, and engaging visuals. They explored place value, broke numbers into tens and ones, and compared quantities as they built a solid foundation in math through hands-on learning.

In first grade, students became environmental advocates through a project on the Florida panther. After learning about the Friends of the Florida Panther Refuge, they scripted, filmed, and produced an educational video to raise awareness within the school This project connected literacy and media skills with a real-world cause, empowering students to use their voices for good

Second graders dove into reading and writing through immersive texts, writer’s workshops, and book discussions that deepened comprehension and sparked creativity. In math, they strengthened fluency with addition and subtraction and began exploring strategies for solving multi-step problems. Across the curriculum, curiosity, and confidence were nurtured through inquiry and collaboration.

Students studied animal adaptations in third grade by researching how lizards survive in different environments. They presented their findings in class discussions and projects that showcased scientific thinking. In art, they created still-life compositions inspired by Frida Kahlo, utilizing layering and shading techniques to express their personal and cultural identities

Fourth graders investigated the human impact on the environment during a field trip to the Outdoor Hospital, a hands-on learning site dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education. They explored the relationship between carbon footprints and sea turtle conservation, applying classroom learning to real-world environmental challenges.

Our fifth-grade students proudly represented Sagemont Prep at the VEX IQ Worlds Competition in Dallas. Competing against more than ......

420 teams, they placed 71st in the individual skills category, demonstrating resilience, critical thinking, and collaboration. A latenight practice session with international teams was a highlight, showing the power of global connections in STEM education. Their success paves the way for the launch of a new third-grade robotics team next year.

Beyond classroom learning, our students developed a strong sense of self through Student-Led Conferences They reflected on their growth, shared digital portfolios, and articulated goals, strengthening selfawareness and engagement These conferences fostered meaningful connections between students, families, and teachers.

Events like our International Festival provided students with opportunities to explore global cultures through music, food, art, and traditional attire. These experiences celebrated diversity, inclusion, and open-mindedness, helping students appreciate both their own backgrounds and those of others.

In Spanish, language learning came to life through a nature-based scavenger hunt. Students identified and labeled items in their surroundings using Spanish vocabulary, reinforcing comprehension and pronunciation through movement and play.

As we reflect on this incredible school year, we take pride not only in what our students have learned but in the compassionate, courageous, and curious individuals they are becoming They embraced challenges, supported one another, and grew in both knowledge and confidence. Their journey this year reminds us that learning is not just academic; it is about building character, voice, and a lifelong love of exploration.

What Is Your Why? Charting Your Pathway and Purpose at Sagemont Prep

As this school year draws to a close, the energy on campus is filled with both celebration and reflection. Behind every college tour, advising conversation, and acceptance letter lies a deeper thread: purpose. Since joining the Sagemont Prep community earlier this year, I have had the privilege of helping students explore one of the most meaningful questions they will ever ask: What is your why?

This simple question has become the theme of our college counseling journey. It encourages students to think beyond the checklist of requirements and reflect on what motivates them, who they are, what they value, and how their academic efforts connect to their future goals. Whether working with freshmen mapping their interests or seniors finalizing applications, my goal has been to provide support that is both structured and personal

Together, we have built college profiles, drafted essays, updated Scoir, and written our “Dear Ms. Laing” letters, taking the steps to help students align their passions with real opportunities. We have begun to normalize college conversations as a process of discovery, not just pressure. The shift is powerful. Our rising seniors are now in the driver’s seat, learning how to take ownership of their next steps with clarity and confidence. At the same time, our sophomores are engaging with our grade-level checklists to thoughtfully map their own college and career pathways.

As we look ahead to the 2025–2026 school year, our momentum continues. With new systems in place and stronger family partnerships forming, we are building a college counseling culture that is both structured and student-centered. I am excited to deepen this work and walk alongside our students as they lean into their why. When purpose leads the path, the destination becomes that much more meaningful.

Marcey,

Sagemont Prep Athletics had an exceptional year, with our athletes, coaches, and teams excelling in competition and character. This success reflects true teamwork and the dedication of Mrs. Nelson, our administration and coaching staff, and our student-athletes. We also thank our families, whose continued support underpins everything we do.

Our women’s golf team continued to shine across South Florida, capturing the title at the Maverick Invitational and earning second place at the Florida High School Athletic Association District Tournament. Special congratulations to Ariana Silva, who was named to the All-Broward First Team for the third consecutive year. Ariana’s achievement reflects an incredible level of consistency, focus, and determination.

The women’s volleyball team started their season with remarkable momentum, going undefeated with a six and zero performance at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Gainesville. After competing fiercely against some of the region’s top programs, the team advanced to the regional finals for the first time since 2017. Although they narrowly missed a bid to the state final four, their season stands as a testament to hard work, resilience, and team unity.

In the pool, eighth-grade swimmer Sofia Martinez qualified for her first regional tournament, a remarkable achievement that underscores her talent and dedication and sets a new standard for Sagemont Prep swimming.

Our men’s basketball team made school history by earning a third consecutive state championship title with a dominant win over Victory Christian. Standout players Matt Able and Ricky Liburd were honored as Players of the Year, and Kevin Thomas was named to the All-Broward First Team for the second year in a row. Head Coach David Roe was once again recognized as Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year This remarkable team has raised the bar for achievement and continues to inspire pride across our entire community

Looking ahead, Sagemont Prep Athletics is excited for next year. At the elementary and middle school levels, we will build on our foundational programs and expand offerings, including flag football, coed track and tennis, junior varsity boys' basketball, and women’s beach volleyball. In high school, we will reinstate women’s basketball and coed tennis. These additions reflect our commitment to a diverse and inclusive athletic experience.

We are proud of our athletes’ passion, discipline, and sportsmanship, which have created a culture of excellence. As summer begins, stay connected on Instagram on @sagemontprepathletics for the latest news and updates. Enjoy a safe and relaxing break. Go Lions!

Did you know Synergy recently recorded their cover of Journey’s timeless anthem, Don’t Stop Believin’?

Since 2013, Synergy, Sagemont Prep’s premier student band, has been captivating audiences with their talent and unmistakable sound. Whether they are performing at iconic venues like Disney World, Universal Studios, or the Hard Rock Guitar Hotel, Synergy consistently raises the bar, representing the best of Sagemont Prep’s musical talent.

At the heart of the program is Mr. Matthew Goldberg, the visionary behind Synergy. With more than three decades of experience in music education and performance, Mr. Goldberg brings unparalleled energy and expertise to the classroom and stage. A Berklee College of Music and Barry University graduate, Mr. Goldberg has performed at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, recorded at Gloria Estefan’s legendary Crescent Moon Studios, served as musical director for Gioia Bruno (of Exposé), and even performed alongside Bon Jovi. Since joining Sagemont Prep in 2013, he has built a music program that goes beyond instruction, inspiring and developing student talent year after year through a curriculum that fuses guitar, keyboard, vocals, drumline, and rock band into a unique offering.

We are proud to celebrate a recent milestone for this incredible program. The current members of the Synergy band have recorded their own cover of Journey’s timeless anthem, Don’t Stop Believin’! Their recent recording showcases the group’s musicality, artistry, and technical skill. Also, what our Sagemont Prep community loves about this recent accomplishment is the deep collaboration and connection shared by the members of the group; they are truly a family.

Did you know that Pride Rock Cafe was established in 2018 by students?

The buzz is real, and the milkshakes are even better—Pride Rock Café has been in full swing and thriving at Sagemont Prep since 2018!

Pride Rock was established in 2018 by alumni Amanda Correa (Class of 2020), Jonathan Medina (Class of 2018), and Maggie Roach (Class of 2019). Pride Rock Café was born from a bold idea in Mr. Brown’s Principles of Entrepreneurship class. With a compelling business plan, a school-approved loan, and a lot of heart, our three alumni visionaries began transforming a science classroom into a vibrant, student-run café that continues to serve as a model of innovation and purpose on campus.

Through the entrepreneurship principles learned with Mr. Brown, these three students wanted to create a space for their peers that would last beyond their graduation. Since 2018, Mr. Brown has guided an average of 15 students yearly to do more than run a cafe and make a profit. Mr. Brown has instilled a sense of purpose with the cafe's goals and mission. Did you know that Pride Rock Café reinvests its profits into student clubs, helping fund off-campus excursions and learning experiences? Even more, Pride Rock Café donates to local causes, embracing the core belief that success means giving back. The cafe is more than a place to grab the best chicken wrap in town; it is the home of real-world learning inspired by our school’s philosophy on education.

Did you Know?

Each year, Pride Rock Café treats one of our student gala winners to more than just breakfast—they get an exclusive bite of entrepreneurship with a behind-the-scenes lesson in running a student-led business!

Life After Sagemont Prep:

Since graduating from Sagemont Prep, my journey has been shaped by leadership, advocacy, and meaningful opportunities. One of my proudest achievements was being tapped into Florida Blue Key, the state’s oldest and most prestigious leadership honorary, which connected me with an inspiring network of leaders.

I recently completed my term as President of Gators for Israel, where I strengthened my commitment to supporting Israel and educating others about the U.S.-Israel relationship. A highlight was visiting Israel, which deepened my understanding and passion for the region. Building on this, I was honored to found and serve as President of Christians United for Israel at UF, promoting dialogue and unity across campus communities.

In Student Government, I serve as Action SG Agency Head, leading student engagement on key campus initiatives. I have also held roles such as External Affairs Vice Chair of Campus Political Affairs, where I advocate for student interests at the federal level, and Senator in the UF Senate, working to improve campus life through policy

This summer, I was selected as a Policy and Government Affairs Lobbying Intern with AIPAC, gaining hands-on experience in advocacy and U.S.-Israel policy. Each of these roles has deepened my skills and commitment to public service.

I am grateful for the foundation Sagemont Prep gave me the confidence, values, and drive that continue to guide my journey.

Sagemont Prep Staff Inspiration:

The faculty at Sagemont Prep not only shaped my education but also the core of who I am. From my first days on campus, I was surrounded by mentors who believed in my potential. Their influence went beyond academics; they inspired me to think deeply, act boldly, and lead with purpose. Among them, Mr. Brown stands out. His teaching was never just about facts or grades but about instilling values that would guide me through life. He pushed me beyond my comfort zone because he saw something in me worth developing. He held me to a standard of hard work, resilience, and integrity, showing me that excellence is a choice built on effort and self-belief. What made Mr. Brown unforgettable was his belief in character and authenticity. He encouraged me to speak my truth, take risks, and lead with courage. His lessons became a compass I return to in times of doubt, reminding me to see challenges as opportunities and to stay true to myself. Thanks to Mr. Brown and the dedicated faculty at Sagemont Prep, I found a purpose that still drives me. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue leadership, service, and impact and to measure success not just by achievements but by character.

How did Sagemont Prep ignite your passions?

Sagemont Prep was where I first discovered the power of ideas, advocacy, and leadership Looking back, nearly every aspect of my college journey and career goals can be traced back to the foundation laid in those classrooms. Through courses like AP Government and Mock Trial, I found both my voice and my purpose. AP Government showed me how democracy works in real life and helped me understand the vital role public policy plays in shaping society. It sparked my awareness of the importance of staying informed and engaged for younger generations. At the same time, Mock Trial taught me to think critically, speak with confidence, and advocate with purpose. I spent hours preparing arguments, rehearsing objections, and growing into a space that pushed me to improve. These experiences didn’t just build skills, they ignited a passion for public service, law, and leadership that continues to guide me. What made the biggest difference, though, were my teachers. They mentored, encouraged, and inspired me. They saw my potential before I did and challenged me to meet it. They created an environment where curiosity was nurtured, ambition was celebrated and leadership was expected I recently earned my bachelor’s degree in politic

Additionally, I feel that I matured under the guidance of Coach Roe, thanks to the freedom he gave me to lead my team both on and off the court.
