Mel Nelson, Head of School
We had the extraordinary pleasure of celebrating the graduating Class of 2024 only a few weeks ago. Graduation day is one of my favorite days of the year, as it symbolizes so many things. I am reminded with sincere admiration that our seniors have navigated a great deal in their educational path, dealing with the challenges of school, navigating adolescence, peer relationships, evolving parental relationships from child to young adult, and much more than we will ever know. Although our seniors have ended this chapter at Sagemont Prep, we are filled with pride, knowing they have a foundation that has prepared them to rise to the new challenges and successes that await them in college and beyond.
I have been on a journey at Sagemont Prep for more than twenty years. My oldest daughter started here in pre-school and will be entering high school in August. Like all parents, I am baffled at where the years have gone Yet, I am so excited to see her soon be able to apply the lessons learned from the strong educational foundation she received in elementary and middle school to the new challenges of high school. In the fall, my youngest will be in 2nd grade. Yes, I know I have a long way to go before an empty nest, but what I see for each of my children is that they, too, will one day walk across the Sagemont Prep stage at graduation.
Starting from the early days at the Lower Campus, our students are nurtured in an environment that values curiosity and foundational learning. As our students progress to middle school, they encounter new challenges and opportunities that further their development. Middle school is marked by significant intellectual and emotional growth as our students begin to delve deeper into their subject areas and navigate the complexities of adolescence, working alongside outstanding Sagemont Prep educators who have helped foster a sense of independence and responsibility. The high school journey at Sagemont Prep is focused on refining our students' academic skills and preparing them for the future with a rigorous curriculum and numerous co-curricular opportunities.
In the words of one of our graduation speakers, Alexa Frances, "Throughout my time here, my experience has mirrored that of many others—impactful, versatile, and filled with valuable lessons and opportunities."
As the seniors completed the move of their tassel to the left, I was reminded that six of our graduates experienced the whole Sagemont Prep experience from elementary school to graduation. Leah Cohn, Leighton Jim, Abdul-Wahaab Malik, Sara Alhadeff, Sean Jean-Mary, and Miguel Moreda have experienced all levels at Sagemont Prep. I want to recognize them and their family, who I have seen grow with us. With this in mind, the cherished tradition of the Sagemont Prep Senior Walk on both campuses is so special for the educators who have seen the growth of our graduates, some starting as early as Pre-K.

Felicia Myers, Upper Campus Principal
As the end of another successful academic year approaches, it is a fitting time to reflect on the incredible journey our students have embarked upon at Sagemont Preparatory School. Reflection is a core pillar of our educational philosophy, serving as a foundation for growth, self-discovery, and empowerment. It is through reflection that our students not only understand their progress but also envision their future potential. Reflection allows our students to appreciate these diverse experiences, recognize their achievements, and set goals for the future. Student-led conferences are the culmination of this reflective journey, and their growth is artfully showcased in individualized digital portfolios. As families, your support and encouragement are crucial in this journey of self-discovery and growth
During our recent graduation ceremony, we were inspired by the words of our senior speakers, Alexa Frances and Dominic Issa. Both of these outstanding individuals shared their personal stories of transformation from quiet, introverted students into confident, passionate leaders. Their journeys are a testament to the supportive and nurturing environment at Sagemont Prep, where each student is seen, heard, and encouraged to pursue their true potential.
At Sagemont Prep, we believe that education extends far beyond the walls of the classroom. Our students have numerous opportunities to explore their passions and expand their horizons. From engaging with alumni and industry experts who visit as guest speakers, to discovering new interests through clubs initiated and run by students themselves, to lesson extension trips such as Spanish classes using newly acquired language skills to order at a local restaurant and the Lean Six Sigma class visiting a warehouse to better understand their efficiency standards, every experience is designed to inspire and challenge.
Programs like Week Without Walls enhance students' educational experiences by allowing them to explore various professions, including aviation, marine science, culinary arts, and law. Students enrolled in aviation school participated in flight simulations and emergency training. Law students learned about forensic science techniques from a forensic anthropologist and bio-archaeologist and explored the latest crime-solving technologies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Additionally, they discovered the intricacies of the judicial system at the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, Florida’s largest circuit court In the culinary arts program, students engaged in “Chopped” competitions and attended culinary schools like Shibuya, Chefs at Lenore, and the Real Food Academy. Students focused on the Arts watched Broadway-style shows, gained a deeper understanding of theater history, costuming, and participated in interactive museum tours. Marine science students participated in shark and stingray feedings, dolphin encounters, and a reptile experience, learning about their critical roles in the ecosystem.
Our students demonstrated tremendous perseverance and grit this year. The Aerial Drones team began the year without a ranking, qualified for the National Championship and completed the season ranked in the top 9th percentile in the United States. Our Men’s Varsity Basketball team had to pivot and learn to work together after setbacks to ultimately win the State Championship title for the second year in a row Students competed in the prestigious Astronaut Challenge at Kennedy Space Center, established their own internship opportunities, participated in summer college programs at Ivy League institutions, exceled in the inaugural Civil Engineering program, and pushed the boundaries of their knowledge through independent research projects in the AP Capstone program.
Sagemont Prep is committed to fostering community relations to enhance the education of our students, from the Weston Rotary Club and Rotary Does Business, the Weston Chamber of Commerce, the local first-responder agencies, and the City Commissioners. Establishing strong ties to the city opens doors to students, such as Weston University, Youth Leadership Broward and a stronger Interact Club. The Weston Chamber of Commerce even held one of their meetings on-site, hosted by the Sagemont Prep Culinary Club, where our Future Cities competitors, Difference Makers, and Pride Rock managers, were able to pitch investment opportunities to the chamber members. You can now enjoy sponsored specialty beverages in our student-run cafe and increased real-world opportunities for students due to these partnerships.
Our commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals is also evident in our emphasis on community service All Sagemont Prep students engage in meaningful community service activities, becoming active agents of change within their communities. Students donated thousands of dollars of toys and food for various charities, were recognized for their extremely successful blood drives, participated in multiple beach cleanups and worked together boxing hundreds of pounds of food in a local food bank.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024- you have left behind an indelible legacy. We look forward to following your future accomplishments. To the rising seniors and underclassmen, your journey is only just beginning.
Monica Vigna, Lower Campus Principal
As the school year at Sagemont Prep concludes, we take this opportunity to reflect on our educational pillars, which are integral to our vision and mission. These guiding principles help us develop our students into problem solvers, global learners, innovators, inquirers, and creators. Our collective efforts are evident in our community service, schoolwide events, and rigorous curriculum.
At Sagemont Prep, community involvement starts in preschool and continues through all grade levels, fostering intellectual, social, and emotional growth through various activities. Students participated in events such as Career Day, grade-level community service projects, performances, book fairs, field trips, clubs, sports, and schoolwide student-led literacy activities. Our first Annual International World Festival, facilitated by parents and coordinators, highlighted our commitment to developing wellrounded learners who embrace diversity and culture.
Sagemont Prep fosters a rigorous, dynamic, and caring learning environment with intentional pathways for authentic student engagement. Signature Projects across all grade levels promote deeper learning through passion-driven topics. Early childhood students engaged in projects like the Flower Mart and Bees and Butterfly Simulation, featuring guest speakers and real-world connections. In kindergarten, students build foundational skills through entrepreneurship lessons by developing business ideas, creating plans, and fully implementing them during the Signature Showcase. These entrepreneurs, or "Kinderpreneurs," pitched their plans and gained hands-on experience. Learning was extended through a visit to the local Publix to learn about the various departments, pricing, restocking, and customer service.
Upper elementary students focused on projects related to bridges, biomes, energy efficiency, and the Invention Convention, which further enhanced their application of academic concepts. Our 2nd and 3rd-graders utilized bridges and biomes as a focal point for their project, which is intentional, as it also guides students in learning about connections for people, places, and resources. Our energy-efficient environmentalists in 4th grade were focused on reducing their carbon footprint. Analyzing circular economics pushes students to think about their carbon footprint and how to educate others about practical solutions. Sagemont Prep 5th-grade entrepreneurs worked to develop a product, pitch their ideas, and launch their businesses in the Signature Project marketplace.
Our students extend their learning beyond the classroom through enriching field trips and competitions. Our 3rd graders visited the Kennedy Space Center, immersing themselves in space exploration. Participation in the Odyssey of the Mind competition further enhances their education by .
developing problem-solving skills, creativity, teamwork, and public speaking. These experiences ignite curiosity and connect academic concepts to everyday life. At Sagemont Prep, education transcends the classroom walls, applying knowledge to real-life situations and promoting educational and personal growth.
Our school's Innovation Hub is filled with excitement as Kindergarten through 5th grade students dive into coding, robotics, and programming. Our state-of-the-art facility provides a dynamic learning environment where students can explore and develop their S.T.E.M. skills. For our innovators in Kindergarten and 1st grade, the Code Spark app introduces foundational coding concepts in a fun and interactive way. Our 4th and 5th graders delve deeper into Python programming and VEX IQ Robotics. Python, a widely used programming language, empowers students to write complex code and tackle sophisticated projects. With VEX IQ Robotics, students design, build, and program robots to complete intricate challenges, honing their engineering, coding, and problemsolving skills.
Parent involvement is a cornerstone of the Sagemont Prep experience. From guest speakers during career exploration to engaging science extensions, we encourage active participation from our parents. This was evident during a captivating presentation on leopard geckos provided by a Sagemont Prep parent, enriching our class's understanding of these lizards' adaptations, such as fat-storing tails and specialized toe pads.
Our 4th graders have integrated science, math, and reading to explore environmental issues like water conservation and pollution, culminating in lab investigations and in-depth data analysis. As part of their "Nature of Science" unit, students conducted a dissolution experiment to learn the scientific method, fostering a disciplined approach to problem-solving and analytical thinking.
Our student-led programming, Monty's Morning Show, presented by 4th and 5th graders, continues to spark daily excitement. The morning show features news updates, weather forecasts, special announcements, and entertaining skits The hosts showcase their creativity and enthusiasm
Tera Sweeting, College Counselor
As the year comes to a close, the halls fill with anticipation and achievement. Our seniors celebrate the culmination of years of growth as acceptance letters from prestigious colleges poured in, marking significant milestones in their educational journeys.
Amid the excitement, National College Decision Day highlighted the collective triumph of the Class of 2024. Our students, families, faculty, and staff joined the festivities of a week-long celebration for the Class of 2024 that included the cherished Senior Walk, Senior Breakfast, a beach day, the Family Dinner Dance, and the conclusion of the week with, of course, graduation!
As we celebrated our graduating seniors, we also turned our focus to the rising stars of our junior class, ready to take the next step in their educational journey. From essay drafting to resume building to finalizing college lists, our juniors are set up for success at every turn.
Partnerships are essential as we prepare our students for the next phase in life, and our collaboration with the Princeton Review continues to thrive. With SAT and ACT prep courses now available on campus and online, students can hone their skills from anywhere, ensuring equitable access to top-tier resources.
Central to our approach is personalized college guidance. With a keen eye for potential and a passion for nurturing dreams, our full college team works tirelessly to tailor each student's journey, from academic planning to beyond-the-classroom exploration. Reflecting our commitment to continuous improvement, we are excited to announce the addition of Scoir to our college program for the 24-25 academic year. This innovative platform will streamline the college application process for parents and students, offering comprehensive tools for college search, application tracking, and decision-making support For parents, Scoir provides a clear overview of your child's progress and college options, while students benefit from personalized guidance and resources.

Luann Burrows, Lower Campus School Counselor
As many of you know, this was my first year serving as the School Counselor at the Lower Campus of Sagemont Preparatory School. This experience has far exceeded my expectations. Working alongside the administrative team to deliver the Second Step social-emotional curriculum to our students has been a true pleasure. The Second Step program has successfully cultivated essential social-emotional skills, such as fostering positive relationships, adeptly managing emotions, and setting ambitious goals. The beauty of the Second Step program lies in its ability to evolve alongside your children throughout their elementary years, continuously preparing them for future success.
Reflecting on the program, I was thrilled to see how all grades readily connected with the content The students eagerly anticipated their weekly lessons, participated fully, and applied the content in their classrooms and with their peers Delivering these lessons was the highlight of my day Having been a teacher for 16 years and a School Counselor for 14 years prior to joining the Sagemont Prep family, I genuinely believe that once a teacher, always a teacher. The Second Step program allowed me to build strong and meaningful relationships with the students. My goal has been to help the students thrive and succeed in school while setting them up to be thoughtful and productive adults.
Our fifth-grade students will soon transition to the middle school campus. My experience as the School Counselor at the Upper Campus last year has uniquely positioned me to prepare and equip these fifth graders with the information they need for a successful transition to middle school. We have focused on cooperation, clear communication, and decision-making skills. I will miss them all and wish them the very best as they move on to the Upper Campus.
The school hallways have become far too quiet as we approach the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. At Sagemont Prep, we prioritize social-emotional skills, recognizing their importance alongside academic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. These skills are critical for children's success in school and life During the summer, our administrative team and counselors dedicate their time to planning for the next school year, ensuring we continue to support our students' growth and development
A look ahead at the Zones of Regulation program for the 2024-2025 school year from the counseling team:
The Zones of Regulation is a Social-Emotional Curriculum and Regulation Program. It is a comprehensive approach to help kindergarten to 5th-grade students manage their emotions effectively The Zones of Regulation is a program that sorts emotions into four colored zones and provides tools and strategies for self-regulation.
Yasmine Mohamed, Upper Campus School Counselor
In my inaugural year at Sagemont Prep, I've been privileged to create profound connections with both students and parents As many of you have come to recognize, my philosophy revolves around growth, skill-building, and a commitment to finding solutions Throughout the academic year, I've instilled this approach into our school community in diverse and impactful ways Through multiple "feelings circles," mediation of peer conflicts, advisory, and one-on-one sessions, students have been equipped with a toolkit of essential skills to empower them to tackle challenges with confidence and resilience. Moreover, the Tuesday Chats With Mel parent workshops have focused on fostering effective communication and embracing a collaborative parenting style, especially as your children navigate the delicate phases of preadolescence and adolescence.
The Peer Counseling On Campus Group kicked off in April 2024 and has shown positive results already! These students are my eyes and ears, ensuring every peer is noticed. Beyond student and parent support, I've prioritized providing our esteemed faculty with the necessary tools and guidance through professional development drop-ins. By offering unwavering support to our educators, we ensure they are well-equipped to navigate our unique student population, fostering an environment of growth and excellence for all.

The Sagemont Prep Athletics Program has had another outstanding year! Our coaches, teams, and athletes have so much to be proud of as they continue to impress and excel both on and off the field of play As I am excited to reflect on the department’s accomplishments this year, I would be remiss if I did not thank the exceptional individuals behind the scenes Mrs Nelson, our administrative team, my incredible coaching staff, our athletes, and finally, our Sagemont Prep families who support our programs and entrust us with their student-athletes’ goals.
Our women’s golf program continues to dominate the South Florida scene as they won the Maverick Invitational, both the East and West Coast South Florida PGA events, brought home their 7th straight district championship, and ended the year with their 7th consecutive trip to the FHSAA State Championships! Ariana Silva, Abigail Lee, and Rachel Gomez were All-Broward 1st Team selections! The women’s volleyball team started their season 16-0 and advanced to the regional semi-finals. With just one senior on their roster, the girls are poised to make a run at the program’s first state championship next season. Another standout is 8th-grade swimmer Lillian Mirones, who qualified for the regional tournament for the second time! Our men’s basketball team won back-to-back state championships for the first time in our school history, defeating rival Orlando Christin Prep for the second straight year Standouts Kevin Thomas and Ricky Liburd were 1st Team AllBroward selections, and head coach David Roe was named the Florida Dairy Farmer Coach of the Year again this season! Our baseball program had another excellent season and just barely missed out on advancing into the regional tournament. Dylan Rubenstein, Adrian Fernandez, Josh Agriesti, and David Perez were all chosen for the HSBN All-Star team! These are just some of the highlights from the many accomplishments in our department this year!
As we look forward to the 2024-25 school year, I am thrilled about the additions to our athletic programs. Our most significant number of additions will come at the elementary level with offerings like cross country, flag football, tennis, soccer, and track! We are excited to strengthen our first-year programs from 2023-24, like middle school flag football, co-ed track, and co-ed tennis, as well as boy’s JV basketball and women’s beach volleyball. At the high school level, we look forward to bringing back women’s basketball, women’s JV volleyball, and co-ed tennis The future is bright for athletics at Sagemont Prep!
We are immensely grateful for the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices of all department members and eagerly anticipate building on this year’s success! Stay tuned for expanded programs and exciting new opportunities to engage with Sagemont Prep athletics! Follow us on Instagram @sagemontprepathletics. Wishing everyone a relaxing, enjoyable, and safe summer. Until next season… GO LIONS!!!
Estefania Martinez, Innovation & Technology Coordinator
The 23-24 school year has been a resounding success, primarily attributed to the seamless integration of technology and innovation into our classrooms. From interactive online learning platforms to virtual reality field trips, students have embraced new ways of learning, fostering creativity and engagement.
Throughout this year, we witnessed an expansion within our VEX Robotics ecosystem and our virtual and artificial reality immersive learning programs across both campuses. This expansion further aligns our curriculum, ensuring consistency and cohesion throughout our educational endeavors While our upper campus students have long been seasoned competitors, this year marked the debut of our lower campus students, the Lion Innovators, enthusiastically participating in multiple competitions! The students excitedly dove headfirst into their first robotics competition. From designing intricate mechanisms to troubleshooting code, every challenge became an opportunity for growth and collaboration, laying the groundwork for future innovation and teamwork. We are grateful for the support and mentorship from our upper campus students, who paved the way for the success of our Lion Innovators!
As we bid farewell to our Senior Technology & Innovation Student Intern, Miguel Moreda, we reflect on his invaluable contributions over the past two school years. Miguel has been an exceptional asset, assisting in various technology initiatives, including server and phone revamps, network updates, and numerous other tasks We appreciate his dedication and will miss him tremendously as he continues his Computer Science Engineering pursuits at Washington University! The Sagemont Prep Technology Internship program has quickly become a cornerstone of our institution, and we eagerly anticipate its continued growth. With several students expressing interest in joining our internship program, we are excited about its promising future.
Our commitment to enhancing professional development for faculty, families, and students remains unwavering. Additionally, we are steadfast in our resolve to further fortify campus safety measures. We take this moment to celebrate the achievements of our students and faculty members this school year while eagerly anticipating the remarkable endeavors that await us in the 20242025 academic year.
