The Friendship Regatta is a friendly Regatta between 4 sailing clubs where each club takes turns to host the event annually. The 4 clubs are the Fukuoka Junior Yacht Kaiyo Club, Busan Junior Yacht Club, Shanghai Junior Yacht Club, and SAF Yacht Club.
This year’s Regatta was hosted by the Japanese counterparts in Fukuoka from 4th to 8th August 5 sailors from SAF Yacht Club had represented Singapore this year.
The Club’s delegation left from Singapore’s Changi Airport on an early morning flight and reached Fukuoka Airport after a 12 hour travel. They were received by several sailors and volunteers at Fukuoka. In the evening, there was a welcome session wherein the teams got to meet each other and do a round of introductions.
Today was Day 1 of racing. A skippers briefing was conducted followed by another briefing from Coach Iggy with the sailors. Once the race was completed, the hosts took the sailors around to explore Fukuoka. They were taken to an arcade where they enjoyed a fun game of bowling!
Today was Day 2 and the final day of the race. It was a really hot and windy day, however our sailors battled through with great results despite the tough conditions and ended the day in high spirits.
The supporters at the Regatta also had an opportunity to go on a boat ride, which brought them up close with the sailors when they were racing.
The day wrapped up with a closing dinner where the different teams took to the stage for various performances. Prizes were also distributed and all the attendees had a gala time.
The Chairman of the hosting clubFukuoka Junior Yacht Kaiyo Club, Mr. Kawachi, presented the Singapore flag to the Seasports Manager of SAF Yacht Club , Jason Swee, symbolising the passing on of the next leg of the Regatta to Singapore.
The team spent Day 3 visiting several tourist sites and attractions. It was a day to relax and enjoy Fukuoka now that the race was over.
It was the team’s final day at Fukuoka. They were chaperoned to the airport by a parent volunteer and her children.

The Qingdao International Youth Regatta was at its 15th anniversary this year. The event saw participation of over 200 sailors from Singapore, Australia, Macau, Russia, South Africa, Thailand and China.
The Singapore team, led by Coach Xiaodong, had a total of 6 Optimist and 2 ILCA4 sailors representing SAF Yacht Club.
9th August 2023
The team left from Changi Airport the day before the Regatta to Qingdao.
Upon arrival, they were greeted by the volunteers at the event and were escorted to their hotel. Later in the evening, the event host treated all teams to dinner where everyone could meet each other. All participants had a great time meeting old friends and making new ones.
On Day 1, an ‘On-Water training’ session was scheduled but due to strong winds, this was cancelled. Instead, the sailors were permited to launch their boats for a short sail, limited to the vicinity in the Marina and its breakwaters only.
11th
The weather conditions were challenging for the sailors over the next few days with strong currents, big swells, and shifty light winds. But despite this, the race officials managed to conduct 4 qualifying races for both silver and gold groups, 2 fleet rates for gold group, and 5 races for the ILCA Women's category
On the final day of the race, the closing ceremony was conducted. There were performances, speeches and awards and tokens of appreciations were also handed out to the teams.

Q1:How did your sailing journey come about?
I was inspired by my dad who used to sail when he was a student. I started sailing the Optimist when I attended the 4-day GKA course at SAFYC, and continued training with SAYFC after that.
Q2:What’s your favourite aspect of sailing? Feeling the wind in my face and the movement of the boat cutting through the waves.
Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I had fun making friends. I am grateful for my coaches, Coach Iggy, Coach Low, Coach Joelle and Coach Edward, who have taught me a lot.
Q4:Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
My first “bullet”, the feeling of finishing first in a race for the first time during the Pesta Sukan Regatta this year.
Q5:What about your worst experience in sailing?
During my first Regatta, I was inexperienced – I did not understand the course and the wind was the strongest I had encountered since I started sailing.
Q6:Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they? Yes, I take wushu as a CCA in school.
Q7:How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?
I have to be efficient when doing my homework. It helps when I keep a list of things to do for school so I do not forget.
Q8:For you, what makes a good sailor?
A good sailor is humble, and believes in herself. A good sailor is not born, but made through hard work.
Q9:What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?
To do as well as possible. To consistently improve myself.
Q10:Any Regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
I look forward to every Regatta! I read through my sailing notes, have a good breakfast, and mentally prepare myself before each race. My parents will always pray with me before I launch and that helps me too.

School: St. Hilda’s Primary School
Hobbies: Sailing and playing Pokémon
Favourite Food: Roti Prata
Sailing Honours: SG Youth Sailing Championship – 6th position
Q1:How did your sailing journey come about?
I was introduced to sailing by my older brother, Lucas, and decided to join GKA when I was 7 years old.
Q2:What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?
I enjoy sailing in strong wind conditions when the boat is moving very fast.
Q3:What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
I love going to training because I have met many good friends from the training squad. I have also learnt a lot from all the good coaches like Coach Low, Coach Gracina, Coach Mike, Coach Iggy and Coach Xiaodong. Not to mention Uncle Suddin who is always encouraging me to always do my best.
Q4:Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
My most memorable sailing experience was during NSC CUP 2022 when I was still a novice. I had a good start and rounded mark 1 first. However, due to my lack of experience, I eventually came in 11th for the race. That race motivated me to work harder.
Q7:Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?
I enjoy playing badminton with my family.
Q6:What about your worst experience in sailing? During my school training, the daggerboard hit my head when I was trying to help my friend to get his boat ready. This resulted in 6 stitches on my forehead.
Q8:How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?
I always make an effort to finish my homework during non-training days.
Q8:For you, what makes a good sailor?
A good sailor needs to know how to execute their technique properly and always pay attention to their coach’s instructions.
Q9:What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?
I hope one day I can represent Singapore in sailing Regattas together with my brother, Lucas.
Q10:Any Regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
I am looking forward to the NSC Cup because this will be my first gold fleet race. I will attend all training and ensure I make as little mistakes as possible.
What is your role at SAFYC?
I work in the maintenance department. Its been 3 years since I joined.
What does a day in your work look like?
I ensure that the Club buildings are inspected and if I spot a repair anywhere or if there is a need to procure new materials, I inform the office to look into it. Sometimes I am on morning duty, while at other times, I am on night duty so my work timings usually varies.
What is the most fun part of your job?
I love when we have events. But they also come with challenges; ensuring that the tables, chairs and towels are in place and the Club is ready for the event.
If you had a superpower, what would you want it to be?
I have only travelled in an aeroplane once before when I was coming from KL to Singapore. So I would want the ability to go everywhere.
