SINGAPORE REGATTA 2024

The 3rd edition of the Singapore Regatta took place on 16 - 18 February. The Regatta was co-organised by Changi Sailing Club with SAF Yacht Club and supported by the Singapore Sailing Federation.

The 2024 event brought the participating yachts on a scenic Passage Race Route on Day 1 along the East Johor Straits, a most unique and challenging course for the prevailing North East Monsoon. Following the passage race on Saturday, sailors were introduced to shorter windward-leeward races and the infamous Tekong Tango on Day 2 –concluding the Regatta on Sunday. The Singapore Regatta 2024 was the final leg for the qualifying event of the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup Challenge.

Sir Thomas Lipton, the founder of Lipton’s Tea, was an avid sailor who has taken part in the America’s Cup multiple times.

SAF Yacht Club was honoured to host the Skipper’s Briefing and Opening Ceremony at our Lazarus Ballroom on the evening of 16 February. After the Briefing, Changi Sailing Club’s Commodore, Ms. Deborah Barker, gave an opening speech followed by SAF Yacht Club’s Commodore, RADM Augustine Lim, before the revealing of the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, together with SAF Yacht Club's General Manager, Mr Teo Wee Chin, to all the guests present.

Passage Race – Day 1

The IRC, J24, PY, multihull and beach catamaran classes started off in the vicinity of Seletar Island, before heading upwind to Felkin Buoy, and proceeded to Deman Shoal before heading back East to round Pulau Ubin before completing the passage race of 29 nautical miles!

Racing and Closing Ceremony – Day 2

The winds were good for racing, even for the SB20 fleet held at Raffles Marina. However, there was a lesser count for the multihull class and an increase in the beach catamaran class.

To celebrate the hard work of the sailors and team involved, there were food and drinks, as well as Live Music entertainment. As it was still the Lunar New Year, all participants and VIPs from various clubs were treated to a Yusheng Lo Hei session for good luck and prosperity.

Thanks to Changi Sailing Club for the use of photos and partial use of article.

BI-MONTHLY TROPHY RACE (BTR)

JANUARY / MARCH 2024

Series 1, 13 January 2024

The first BTR of 2024 started off with 5 competitors completing 2 race courses. There was a nice gentle breeze and overcast skies. During the race, the sailors had fun creating a couple of close-quarters to pass drinks among themselves!

Series 2, 9 March 2024

The second series of the BTR had 4 competitors completing 2 race courses with a nice North-easterly wind that shifted to the East nearing the end of the day. It was an interesting race as the boats were not spread too far and had a few exciting moments during the race.

During Race 1, a close-quarter situation happened between Millenium 2 and Piccanini. Piccanini failed to give way according to Rule 10, causing Millenium 2 to luff up to avoid a collision. Subsequently, on the return leg from Beaulieu towards Deman, both Millenium 2 and Piccanini almost scored DNC for not passing through the pin end.

Race 2 brought the sailors to Simpang Buoy and back to Beaulieu on a Broad Reach before crossing the finishing line. Premium Cru 1 attempted to fly her kite again in this race with success, crossing the line in first place. However, as the time taken to complete the course between all 4 boats was very close, the handicap rating saw her placed in 4th place for the race.

After the race ended, the sailors shared drinks and snacks at the Poolside Lounge and everyone had a jolly good time!

Q: How did your sailing journey come about?

A: My parents enrolled us in the Opti Junior course during the June school holidays in 2021 (During the Pandemic) I fell in love with this sport after that and we continued to advance to Opti Sailor and Opti Racer courses.

Q: Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?

A: My most memorable sailing experience was when I got first place in the RSYC regatta I managed to make it into the final round and saw that my opponents were hard to beat. With my parents’ and friends’ support, they motivated me to do better When I found out that I was in first place, I was shocked. I never knew that I would get first place in the regatta

Q: What about your worst experience in sailing?

A: During my first regatta, I forgot to sign in on one of the days that I thought I sailed better I felt devastated after that

LUCAS LIM, 11+

Q: For you, what makes a good sailor?

A: For me, a good sailor should keep learning to be better and have the “never give up” attitude A good sailor also listens to advice from the coach and will try to correct the mistakes. Lastly, a good sailor takes all training lessons seriously and does not play a fool.

Q: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?

A: I hope to represent Singapore in international competitions one day such as the Olympics, SEA games, and Asian games, and do Singapore proud. I also aim to be in the top 10 in the gold fleet national ranking within these two years.

Q: As siblings who sail together, how do you motivate each other?

A: We help each other to rig up our sails and boats and I encourage my younger sister to keep practicing to become a better sailor. Hopefully one day we can represent Singapore together.

Q: What is your funniest memory of your sibling?

A: When I was sailing, I saw my sister being towed back to shore. When she launched again, I asked her what happened Her response was there was a lizard in her boat! I laughed hard as it was a funny excuse.

EXERCISE SG READY

SAFYC recently organised a fire drill exercise for our staff in support of MINDEF’s inaugural co-led exercise #ExerciseSGReady. On 28 February 2024, a theory session was held before the staff team moved on to the practical exercises. Some Members who were at the Club at the time joined us in learning the safe way to put out a fire too! Our staff is now well briefed and prepared to handle any disruptions or crises that may occur.
