In this series, Western Dressage from a Judge’s Perspective, I will give you tips from my point of view as a judge that may help your scores and learn to ride with more accuracy and precision I find there are common challenges that everyone has learning the discipline, or common movements that riders have difficulty learning, which leads to horse and rider frustrations

This part of the series will address Level 2, the first in which collected gaits are introduced There are many new requirements in Level 2 so let’s break it down in two parts

Tips for the Collected Jog and Lope: In the collected jog you will see horses that are not in a correct outline in one of two ways.

1 The horse will be too long and flat in the spine and out beyond the vertical with their head, not having an uphill energetic gait and balance

2 The horse will be too tight in his body with a short neck, tight back, on or behind the vertical with the head, and will not be engaging the hind legs with freedom.

Anything in between is what is sought after in Level 2. A horse with a collected outline will bear more weight to the hind legs, engage easily and with energy, with the forehand is lighter, and the poll higher than the wither The head of the horse will be on the vertical with a light contact of the bit and a relaxed neck and body

At the collected lope we are in search of the same outline, only a bit more obviously uphill self-carriage and balance. The horse must show:

1.A three-beat gait at all times

2.Staying straight while bending and straight at all times to carry the correct body alignment to be balanced and keep the three-beat gait

After the collected gaits, I have a few tips for the specific required movements in this level Follow for the Shoulder In and Haunches In or Travers

Tips for the Shoulder In:

1.The weakest area in this movement is riders not having the correct angle. Usually there is too much angle and the horse is on 4 tracks The horse should be on 3 tracks at a 30-degree angle

2 It is necessary to keep the bend of the horse during the movement

3 Also commonly the horse loses tempo as the movement starts or as it continues

4.The most common error is that the rider pulls with the inside rein. This only bends the neck, not the body. When this happens all 3 of the above errors can be seen-not enough angle, not enough bend to the horse, and a slow tempo

Tips for the Haunches In or Travers:

1 The most common weak area of Haunches In is there is not enough bend to the horse and the movement then becomes leg yielding

2.To earn the highest scores, your horse must have correct bend and balance while going straight. He travels on 4 tracks with the front legs on the track.

3.If the rider is trying to get too much bend, again pulling with the inside rein too much, the horse resists in some way as he shifts the haunches back to the rail!

Coming soon, in Part 2 I will address the Simple Change of Lead through the Walk, the 10 Meter Circle at the Working Lope and the Sidepass.

Have fun practicing the collected gaits and the first new requirements at Level 2! Palm Equestrian Academy generalinfo@lynnpalm.com 352-362-7847

MSU Farrier School

There are currently approximately 155,000 horses in Michigan, based on the last Equine Survey (2007). While these numbers may have decreased somewhat based on the recession, the use of horses in the state has not decreased, and in fact may be increasing (personal observation). Each of these animals is in need of regular hoof care, with trimming required every 6-8 weeks and shoes (for those who are shod) required on a similar schedule.

The old adage “no foot, no horse” holds, in that a horse without regular hoof care by a knowledgeable professional, is unlikely to be of use to its human caretakers. Further, most horsemen and women would rather hire someone knowledgeable to do this work than to do it themselves Finally, well-trained farriers have the potential to make a decent

living, as evidenced by “An American Farriers Journal survey in 2012 found that the average annual salary for full-time farriers in the U.S. was reported to be $92,623 per year and for part-timers, $21,153. This amount is an average and varies according to experience level, training, etc ” (TheFarriers Guide com)

The problem currently facing the horse industry in the Midwest is that there is currently no reputable means by which to consistently produce well-trained farriers. Michigan residents wishing to pursue this line of work, have needed to leave the state for extended periods of time. Until now.

Michigan State University offers the MSU Farrier School! This 12 or 24-week program will be housed on the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center, and will be led by MSU alum, David Hallock, CJF, ASF. Students in the program will receive both hands-on and classroom-based instruction in hoof and farrier science, equine anatomy and physiology, basic welding, and business The class will run 8 hours per day, with the intention of producing individuals poised to be well trained, professional farriers to serve the equine industry

HORSE ASSOCIATION & TRAIL RIDERS NEWS

Construction Schedule Update - The Horse Campground will BE OPEN all of 2025 camping season.

There is a caveat, though. By the publication of this issue of Saddle Up, the main entrance to the horse camp may be closed. The park staff have built a second entrance into the horse camp to avoid passing the dump station which is being rebuilt. Due to the rebuild, the paved road is closed at the dump station. To get to the horse campground we will use the road toward Day Staging, and make a right turn through site 131, which will be closed for the season. Please be careful using this entrance as it crosses the Confidence Course. Horses and riders should be able to see you coming from a distance, but be extra careful anyway.

If you have reserved site 131 for this summer, you will want to call the park at 616-527-3750 and ask to have your resevation moved. Under this circumstance, they will move the reservation for you.

The Chili Cookoff is On for 2025. The date is October 4, 2025 so reservations have been open since early April.

We have marked out the obstacle locations on Phase 2, and are waiting on approval from state level DNR to install obstacles. We hope to announce workbee dates in August, but it may turn into a fall project. Many obstacles are going to require purchased materials (your dues at work), and some building, so additional hands, more than board members, would sure be appreciated to help construct them. If you are on the trails yet this year or early next year, PLEASE plan to ride this trail each time you come to the park. We need it packed in before we build obstacles.

We hope you will continue to support our efforts to keep improving your experience at Ionia Horse Trails. Don’t forget, we now have a new option for memberships. Those who prefer can donate $200.00 and will be given a Life Time membership in IHTA. Please renew your membership now and keep the momentum going.

Here's hoping 2025 brings you healthy horses and all the riding time you want.

August is here and so is cooler riding. What clinics or other activities have you participated in? Have you been trail riding up north, across the state, down toward the southern side or out of state? Camping in the cool woods sure beats the heat. Sitting around the campfire sharing stories tops off a great day of riding. Our Face Book page and website (michiganfoxtrottinghorse.com) have been getting lots of interest lately. Both are available to educate everyone all about Fox Trotters and our activities. Many people are also shopping for their next steed. If you are new to MFTs, bring a knowledgeable person with you to try the prospect out. Try to buy from someone you or someone your friends know. You will be safer in knowing that the seller will more likely be more honest with you.If that is not possible, there are reputable breeders in Missouri and other states to buy from. Many people buy weanlings to train themselves. Basic groundwork and connection can be done daily when you interact with them anyways. After they mature more mentally and physically the training sessions can be gradually increased. There

are clinicians online or in person who can guide you. Some even have dvds to instruct you. Usually people hang on to their good trail broke MFTs but sometimes they have to sell due to family circumstances or financial constraints. Come ride with us! Our affiliate is hosting The Great Lakes National Trail ride August 22-24 at Silver Creek County Park,3900 34th Ave., Hamilton, MI 49419. Make your camping reservations at https://allegancounty.org/departments/parks -recreation-and-touris m/campsitereservations. There are lots of shady sites to choose from. Go to michiganfoxtrottinghorse.com to print off the ride registration form to submit at the ride and to find out more information. All breeds are welcome. There is a $10 ride fee. You do not need to be a member of the MFHA or the MFTHBA to participate. There will be a potluck and a silent auction also. Bring your friends. We are looking forward to meeting you! We are the Michigan affiliate of the Missouri Fox Trotter Horse Breed Association (mfthba.com) based in Ava, MO. We have filed for 501c3 non-profit status. Our mission is to promote Fox Trotters and to encourage the breeding and training of them, as well as to help their owners learn to enjoy their horses more through educational clinics, trail rides and discussion.

Check out our active Facebook page which gets updated often. Just get a new Fox Trotter? Then you are encouraged to join. There's lots to learn. Print off the membership form found on michiganfoxtrottinghorse.com, send it in and meet new friends!

Today's Youth Are Different and That's a Good Thing

Every generation has its critics From Socrates grumbling about the youth of ancient Greece to folks my age raising eyebrows at millennials and Gen Z, it’s practically tradition to mutter, “Kids these days…” like that’s the final word on the matter

We shake our heads and say the next generation is glued to their phones That they don’t work hard Don’t know how to “do things right.” Too soft. Too distracted. Too different. Well, with all due respect to the hand-wringers and doomsayers. I have to disagree. Strongly.

Yes, today’s youth are different. I’d be worried if they weren’t They’re growing up in a world that looks nothing like the one we knew in the ’70s or ’80s And you know what? That’s not just okay, it’s exactly how it should be

They’re not worse They’re not lazy They’re not broken They’re adapting to a faster, louder, more complicated world. And from where I stand, especially in the saddle or on the back of a hay wagon, they’re not just doing a pretty darn good job, they’re showing remarkable resilience and grit

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think ” – Margaret Mead

A Different World, A Different Generation

We fixed fence with granddad. They learn horsemanship on YouTube We passed notes in class They text We looked things up in encyclopedias. They ask Google.

Technologies changed. But so have the stakes. Climate instability, economic uncertainty, and a nonstop news cycle shape the world they’re inheriting Yet in the midst of all that, I still see creativity, empathy, and resilience shining through

“The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow ” – Nelson Mandela

The Work Ethic Is Alive and Well I recently hired a 14-year-old to help me haul hay Hot, heavy work that builds character fast. And this kid? He showed up, stayed focused, and worked just as hard as any adult I’ve hired No complaints No excuses Just steady effort from start to finish

By the end of the day, he’d earned more than a paycheck, he’d earned my respect.

And that work ethic? It didn’t come from nowhere. His mother clearly taught him well You could see it in the way he carried himself, in his initiative and quiet confidence That kind of character starts at home, and she deserves a tip of the hat

At a clinic in Utah, I found myself surrounded by ranch kids, tough as rawhide, riding like they were born in the saddle. Calm Capable Compassionate with their animals These weren’t just promising riders. They were already fine horsemen and women Watching them work their mules, I thought, If I keep at it, maybe one day I’ll be as good a horseman as they are

“What we instill in our children will be the foundation upon which they build their future ” – Steve Maraboli

Rewriting the Rules of Success

We were handed a pretty narrow script: go to college, get a job, buy a house, settle down Today’s youth know that path isn’t guaranteed, or even desirable. So, they’re carving their own

Some are launching businesses in their teens Others are trading office jobs for pack trips and passion projects Many are choosing meaning over money, and they’re redefining success on their own terms

They’re not rejecting hard work They’re just rejecting the idea that there’s only one way to make a good life.

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it ” – Maya Angelou

Let’s Ride Beside Them

It’s easy to judge what we don’t understand But maybe it’s time we stop trying to steer and start riding beside them instead

Today’s youth aren’t turning their backs on tradition

They’re building on it Blending what works with what needs to change They don’t need us to hold the reins But they might appreciate knowing we’re still around the campfire, still watching their back on the trail, still believing in them, even when they ride a different route than we did.

What they need isn’t control. It’s encouragement. It’s guidance when asked And maybe, just maybe, a little humility from us older hands, because truth be told, we’ve still got things to learn, too

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader ” – John Quincy Adams

The Future Looks Bright

So yes, today’s youth are different from those of us who grew up in the disco haze of the ’70s or the mixtape era of the ’80s. And thank goodness for that. The world is changing fast And the next generation? They’re not just rising to meet it, they’re shaping it. With muddy boots, open minds, and a kind of quiet heart that gives me hope.

So, the next time someone says, “Kids these days ” maybe smile, tip your hat, and say, “Yeah And I’d trust ‘ em with my horse any day ”

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Embracing Change: Finding Steady Ground Through the Shifts

If it feels like life—or your horsemanship journey—is shifting beneath your feet, you’re not alone. Change shows up for all of us. Sometimes it roars in with a big event or a horse who suddenly feels different. Other times, it arrives more quietly—a shift in your schedule, your energy, or your perspective. However it shows up, change can be both exciting and unsettling. But here’s something important to remember:

Growth is change.

Even if you think you’re someone who doesn’t like change, chances are you’re still hoping something shifts—more peace, more connection, more clarity. And all of that begins with change, even the tiniest kind. Yes, even a new thought counts. Our horses remind us how to meet change with presence. They don’t overthink what just happened or worry about what’s next. They respond to what’s true in the moment. And when they’re offered consistency, clarity, and compassion, they find their balance again—even when things feel unfamiliar.

We can learn to do the same.

Here are five gentle, supportive steps to help you meet change with steadiness, softness, and self-trust—each one paired with an example from the barn.

1. Acknowledge What’s Changing

Naming what’s shifting—your routine, your horse’s behavior, your energy—brings clarity and helps your nervous system settle. It’s okay to say, “Something feels different.”

Example: Your horse, who’s usually eager to connect, seems distant. Instead of pushing through, you pause and acknowledge, “Something’s changed.” That honest moment opens the door for curiosity and connection.

2. Breathe Into the Uncertainty Change often stirs up big feelings. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong—it usually means something new is unfolding. A few deep breaths can help you shift from reaction into presence.

Example: Your riding plans fall apart. You feel the frustration rising. Instead of rushing to fix it, you take three deep breaths next to your horse. That simple pause helps you re-center— and opens up a different kind of connection.

3. Reconnect to What’s Steady

When everything feels wobbly, return to what grounds you. A quiet grooming session, a slow walk, leaning on the fence and just being—these little moments help restore calm.

Example: On a day that feels rushed and full, you choose to slow down and groom your horse with presence. As your hands move, you both start to soften. That steadiness is always available.

4. Shift from Control to Curiosity

Trying to control things often adds pressure. Curiosity, on the other hand, invites softness. Try asking, “What’s this here to teach me?” and let that guide your next steps. Example: Your horse hesitates at a new obstacle. Instead of pushing, you get curious: “What are they noticing that I might have missed?” That shift in energy invites partnership instead of resistance.

5. Celebrate Adaptation as Growth

Every time you adjust with care, you’re growing. Give yourself credit. These small pivots are powerful, and they build trust— with your horse and with yourself.

Example: You planned to ride, but your horse seems unsettled. You decide to spend time hand-walking instead. That flexibility honors the moment—and strengthens the connection.

Change doesn’t always ask for a big leap. Sometimes, it just wants a breath. A pause. A soft question.

Your horse will feel your openness.

And so will your heart.

Here’s to meeting whatever’s shifting with gentleness, groundedness, and trust.

You’ve got this. Truly.
