for the change of lead while maintaining your horse’s body position during the change to get it with balance and fluidity and smoothness.

Common errors are break of gait, changing from the front then the hind and riders overexaggerating their aids. Again, the key is the horse’s straightness and the rider’s light use of aids while maintaining correct position and balance in the saddle.

For the quarter pirouette, the horse is highly collected for 1 or 2 strides before and then through a 90 degree turn around the haunches in 2-3 strides, maintaining a correct canter footfall.

Your Inner Journey Shapes Everything

Lately, I’ve noticed something quietly happening in the horse world — and honestly, in life as a whole.

There is a subtle undercurrent of uncertainty that many people are feeling.

Not panic. Not crisis. Just… an uneasy wobble. You might see it show up as:

Second-guessing yourself around your horse

Questioning your instincts

Feeling a bit “tight” in your body

Trying to control outcomes instead of listening in

And when the world feels wobbly, it’s easy to slip into survival mode — even while doing all the right things with your horse.

But here’s what I want to remind you of:

Your results with your horse do not come from the external world.

They come from the state of your inner world. Because just like us, horses don’t respond to what we do nearly as much as they respond to how we are. They don’t watch our hands first.

They watch our breathing. Our posture.

The quiet rhythm of our nervous system. They feel where our mind is before we take a single step toward them.

So if your inner world feels chaotic, rushed, doubtful, or overthinking…

Even if you mean well… Your horse feels that as pressure.

And when your inner world is grounded, curious, soft, and steady…

Even if you’re still learning… Your horse feels safe.

This is why mindset work matters.

This is why emotional regulation matters. This is why the little things matter so much.

Because tiny internal shifts are what create sustainable change.

One breath where you soften your shoulders.

One moment where you allow instead of force.

One choice to listen before you lead.

One quiet pause when you would have pushed through. These little things — the subtle things — are what build trust.

Not perfection.

Not “knowing more.”

Not being flawless or confident every day.

Just gently, consistently tending to the inner world.

This is the heart of Inner Journey Horsemanship.

It’s not about controlling the external behavior of the horse. It’s about aligning your internal landscape, so partnership becomes possible.

Because when you:

Hold your own center

Believe in your ability to listen

Trust your quiet wisdom

Allow space instead of rushing the moment

Your horse doesn’t just “respond.”

They soften.

They open.

They choose you.

Not because you demanded it.

But because your presence felt like home.

A Simple Practice to Try This Month

The next time you walk up to your horse:

Pause at the gate.

Take one gentle breath in through your nose.

Exhale slowly through your mouth.

Then ask yourself:

“What energy am I bringing into this moment?”

If it feels tight, rushed, or anxious — soften your spine.

Trust that one breath is enough to begin again.

The change you want is not far away.

It lives in the little choices you make every day.

The heart-deep ones.

The quiet ones.

The ones only you and your horse will ever see.

Trust is built in moments.

And every moment counts.

Michigan Horse Expo Welcomes Clinicians “Where All Things Horse Come Together”

March 6-8, 2026

The Michigan Horse Expo® is one of the top three-day horse expos in the country Now held at the Farm Bureau Pavilion at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan

The newest announcements for the Michigan Horse Expo are the Clinicians and

Brandt Clark is a second-generation horseman whose work is rooted in experience, humility, and a deep respect for the individuality of each horse. Having learned from some of the best in the equine industry, Brandt's approach is everevolving—guided by the belief that each horse is only doing what he thinks he needs to do or should be doing and must be met where they are mentally, physically, and emotionally. Rather than forcing methods, he focuses on leadership, trust, and building genuine partnerships between horse and rider. At his farm, Brandt offers handson training, personalized evaluation sessions, and customized plans tailored to both horse and rider. Brandt is committed to helping others grow alongside their horses through thoughtful, TRUTH-BASED horsemanship.

Wendy J. Winn is a third-generation horsewoman from southeastern Idaho who spent her formative years honing her skills and dreaming big. After graduating from high school, she fell in love and married Casy Winn while attending Utah State University, and together they embarked on an incredible journey. With over 30 years of marriage, they have actively participated in J.H., H.S., and College Rodeo, along with horse judging and 4-H activities. They have hosted a variety of clinics in biomechanics, saddle fitting, barrel racing, roping, bull riding, and horsemanship, allowing them to learn and grow together. The Winn legacy thrives on values of education, horsemanship, coaching, saddle fitting, Christianity, and service. With extensive experience in training and understanding horses, Wendy specializes in the biomechanics of horse and rider while providing clinics across the U.S, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Wendy has been a featured guest speaker at the Equine Vet Conference for the past two years, speaking to Equine Vets about saddle fit and how we can bridge the gap in the horse industry with education. Wendy has designed saddle trees, saddles, and fit 7,000 horses and still counting. Her engaging teaching style makes learning enjoyable, and her grace shines as she guides others on their equestrian journey.
