Heather Stephen: From Canadian World Cup Athlete to Author and Entrepreneur in Sackville Heather Stephen, a Sackville resident and business owner, embodies an extraordinary journey marked by her unwavering commitment to excellence. Seamlessly transitioning from a successful athletic career, she has become an accomplished author and entrepreneur.

Her story is a powerful testament to her dedication, passion, and relentless pursuit of her dreams.

Stephen’s athletic journey led her to become a standout sprinter and bobsleigh brakeman for the Canadian national team. One of her most profound athletic achieve4 LOVE , SA C K V IL L E

ments occurred during 2010 in Whistler, when she clinched a World Cup medal. Stephen says, “Winning a World Cup medal was very exciting for me. It was one of my first races on the national team

“Seeking what brings joy and purpose has always been important to me. The only difference between you and someone else who has achieved a goal is the ‘doing’ part.” which was thrilling. Representing Canada at such a high level alongside world-class athletes like the three time Olympic gold medalist, Kaillie Humphries, was an honour.”

Her athletic career instilled in her discipline, determination, and the value of teamwork. Her experience as a sprinter and bobsleigh brakeman emphasized the importance of trusting her teammates, effective communication, and going the extra mile to achieve common goals.

“You do not achieve greatness on your own,” Stephen emphasizes.

“Being part of a World Cup team made me realize how true this is.

You must have it within you to do the hard work, but you also need a supportive team around you.”

Beyond her athletic pursuits, Stephen is a passionate author with a flair for storytelling. She has authored two fantasy novels, “The Startrail: Portal Painter” and “The Startrail: Painter’s Keep,” with a third book in the series on the way.

Stephen’s writing reflects her vivid imagination and her ability to express the beauty and complexities of life through words. Her books are available for purchase at Apartment 3 Espresso Bar, on Amazon, and through local bookstores.

Stephen’s journey into entrepreneurship is another chapter in her inspiring story. Alongside her husband, Alexander, she co-owns Apartment 3 Espresso Bar, a beloved community coffee shop in Lower Sackville. Their dedication to creating a welcoming space for the community is a testament to their love for coffee and people.

Stephen’s background in athletics, emphasizing hard work and resilience, has undoubtedly contributed to the café’s success. Stephen says, “Seeking what brings joy and purpose has always been important to me. The only difference between you and someone else who has achieved a goal is the ‘doing’ part.” Stephen says, “Do what you love to do—this is why I do it! But it is good to note that it is not an easy journey.”

In Stephen’s remarkable journey, from the thrilling heights of winning a World Cup medal to the enchanting realms of her literary creations, we find an inspiring example of someone who has wholeheartedly embraced life’s opportunities, leaving an indelible mark on the communities she has touched.

DIWALI - NOVEMBER 12, 2023 Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated

by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It’s a time of vibrant colours and joyous gatherings.

GURU NANAK GURPURAB NOVEMBER 27, 2023 Guru Nanak Gurpurab, also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti, commemorates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. This sacred occasion, observed on the full moon day of Kartik, is marked by spiritual devotion and hymn singing.

HANUKKAH - DECEMBER 7, 2023–DECEMBER 15, 2023 Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, spans eight days and commemorates the restoration of the Altar of Israeli Temple in 164 BCE. It involves lighting the menorah, exchanging gifts, and savouring traditional delicacies. Hanukkah is a time for families to come together and celebrate their faith.

BODHI DAY - DECEMBER 8, 2023 Bodhi Day is an important holiday for Buddhists. It commemorates the day when Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Buddhists engage in meditation, prayer, and acts of kindness on this day to honour the teachings of compassion and enlightenment. Some people also decorate Bodhi trees with colourful lights and ornaments.

CHRISTMAS - DECEMBER 25, 2023 Christmas, celebrated by Christians, is a holiday to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Sackville is adorned with festive lights, and traditions like gift-giving, decorating Christmas trees, and attending church services are observed with great enthusiasm.

CHINESE NEW YEAR - FEBRUARY 10, 2024 Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is celebrated with parades, dragon dances, and delicious traditional meals. It marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar calendar and is a time of renewal, good fortune, and family gatherings.

RAMADAN - MARCH 10, 2024–APRIL 9, 2024 Ramadan is a significant Islamic observance. Muslims fast during daylight hours, engage in prayer, and reflect on their faith. It commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad and promotes spiritual growth and self-discipline.

In addition to Ramadan, Muslims in Sackville also celebrate Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan and is characterized by festive meals and community gatherings, as well as Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, which commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. HOLI - MARCH 25, 2024 Holi, a Hindu spring festival of colours, is celebrated with vibrant powders and water fights. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring.

A Helping Hand: Sackville’s Food Programs In Sackville, a network of dedicated organizations come together to provide essential support to those facing food insecurity. These organizations operate under the umbrella of the Cobequid Food Security Network, offering crucial resources to individuals and families in need of nutritious meals.

Paul Surette, manager of Souls Harbour Sackville Drop-in Centre, plays a significant role in addressing food insecurity in the community. Souls Harbour responded to the recognized need in the area by establishing its new facility at Rock Church at 222 Sackville Drive, contributing to the collective efforts of the Cobequid Food Security Network.

At the Sackville Drop-in Centre, they believe in the power of collaboration and resource-sharing.

Surette says, “At our Sackville Drop-In Centre we believe in not reinventing the wheel. The Cobequid Food Security Network is an important partner and resource for the work we do here. We support each other and the work we do as resources for individuals in need.”

Introducing the 2023 Sackville Business Awards Winners The Sackville Business Awards winners were announced at Sackville Business Association’s (SBA) annual Business Breakfast in October.
