That’S A WRAP!

Sackville Sandwich Week celebrated its sixth annual event during the first week of March, bringing the community together in a celebration of sandwiches and community spirit. Organized by the Sackville Business Association (SBA), this week-long festivity saw the participation of 15 local businesses, including Wrap N’ Roll, one of Sackville’s newest restaurants located at 619 Sackville Drive.

The concept behind Sackville Sandwich Week is simple yet enticing: community members visit different restaurants with a passport in hand. By trying featured sandwiches and collecting stamps from at least three participating eateries, patrons earned the chance to win fantastic prizes, including a family membership to Sackville Sports Stadium, valued at $774, or a Sackville Restaurant Prize Pack, valued at $300.

However, Sackville Sandwich Week

goes beyond enjoying sandwiches, subs, and wraps—it’s an opportunity to spread love and support a worthy cause. For every featured sandwich sold, a portion of the proceeds went toward the Sackville Public Library’s food literacy programming, aiming to provide practical cooking skills and nutritional knowledge to individuals of all ages in the community. Over the years, Sackville Sandwich Week has raised over $18,000 for this cause.

Among the festivities, Wrap N’ Roll stood out as a popular choice, captivating taste buds with its innovative tortilla-based creations. Eran Toren and Leon Zarzhitsky, co-owners of Wrap N’ Roll and emigrants from Israel, shared a vision of bringing something unique to Sackville. Zarzhitsky, drawing from his extensive experience in the hospitality industry and having travelled to over 30 countries, had always dreamt of opening a restau-

rant. Introduced by mutual friends who recognized their shared passion for culinary ventures, Toren and Zarzhitsky instantly bonded and set out on a journey to share their love for food with others, thus opening Wrap N’ Roll.

“We chose Sackville because of the community—it is like one big family.”

With a focus on homemade sauces and fresh ingredients, Wrap N’ Roll swiftly gained a devoted following, becoming a beloved fixture in the community. Zarzhitsky remarks, “We aimed to elevate wraps to the next level.” Many patrons now associate the establishment not only with its use of fresh ingredients but also with its distinctive homemade sauces, especially the homemade ketchup. From the outset, customer feedback played a crucial role in shaping the menu. Toren says, “We invited guests to try our sauces and provide feedback.” Wanting to capture the taste buds of the community, customers’ preferences guided their selection process.

For Wrap N’ Roll, Sackville Sandwich Week was an opportunity to showcase their fresh offerings and give back to the communi-

ty. Their featured sandwich, the Cheese Steak Roll, proved to be a hit among customers, and the selection was intentional. Toren says, “The Cheese Steak Roll is very popular here, and we knew we would sell more of them and be able to donate more.” During Sackville Sandwich Week, Toren says, “Every day was beautiful, and we got lots of new customers.”

Wrap N’ Roll is truly grateful to share their love for fresh food with Sackville. Zarzhitsky says, “We chose Sackville because of the community—it is like one big family.” Toren and Zarzhitsky have witnessed just how connected the community of Sackville is through new customers. Zarzhitsky says, “When guests go home and tell their family or post about us on Facebook, we know after the review we’ll be busy the next day.” Toren hopes their Sackville family feels the same love they have received. “We don’t try to sell as many wraps as we can; we host people like they’re walking into our house,” says Toren. Wrap N’ Roll is grateful for how the community has welcomed them with open arms since their grand opening and especially throughout Sackville Sandwich Week. If you haven’t been to Wrap N’ Roll, they invite you to stop by and savour the fresh flavours for yourself.

Going Above and Beyond: Team Rubicon’s Response to the Sackville Floods

In July 2023, Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian organization that serves global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises, responded to the devastating floods that struck Sackville and neighbouring areas. The record-breaking rainfall submerged roads, rivers, and caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

“During any major emergency, Team Rubicon monitors to see if our help is needed,” says Brandon Daniel, a dedicated volunteer with Team Rubicon and owner of Lighthouse Security, a local Sackville business. Once it was determined

that help was needed, one of the first steps was to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) at 601 Sackville Drive. “We reached out to the owner of the commercial property,” says Daniel. “They generously agreed to allow Team Rubicon to use the space free of charge.”

“I wasn’t stopping until these people were taken care of.”

Despite challenges like limited facilities, Team Rubicon volunteers remained committed, with some even sleeping on-site for weeks.

“We purchased a camping sink as there was no sink, only a toilet,” says Daniel, underscoring the creativity required to overcome obstacles. “I wasn’t stopping until these people were taken care of,” he adds. The magnitude of the task soon drew volunteers from across Canada. “There were approximately 10 to 15 local volunteers and 20 others from across the country,” says Daniel.

“Team Rubicon not only helped make my home safe and mold-free, they saved me money I didn’t have, and the emotional support was amazing.”

Assistance was provided to residents in need, including those without insurance coverage or facing medical and accessibility challenges. Team Rubicon volunteers tirelessly worked to muck out basements, remove debris, and offer emotional support to homeowners like Kathryn Peterson, a Sackville resident, who described Team Rubicon as a “godsend” during her time of need. “Team Rubicon not only helped make my home safe and mold-free, they saved me money I didn’t have, and the emotional support was amazing,” says Peterson.

Peterson recounts one of the hardest parts of the aftermath of the flood, losing many photos and memories of her children’s father, who passed away in 2015, especially a memorable craft her daughter had made for her father. Team Rubicon worked diligently to find these missing items and were able to recover the craft. “They were all so happy for me. I cried when it was found,” says Peterson. Daniel remains in contact with Peterson to this day, a testament to the lasting impact of Team Rubicon’s efforts. “He is so thoughtful and really goes the extra mile for people,” says Peterson of Daniel.

Reflecting on their mission, Daniel highlighted Team Rubicon’s collaboration with government agencies and local businesses, stressing the power of community resilience in the face of adversity. “We reached out to local businesses like Kaiser’s Sub and Sandwich Shoppes,” says Daniel. “They gave our volunteers a really great discount—I purchased Kaiser’s for lunch every day.”

“Anyone could volunteer with Team Rubicon, and the training is free,” says Daniel. For more information on volunteer opportunities with Team Rubicon, visit www. team-rubicon.ca.

SACKVILLE’S GROWING PUBLIC ART

In recent years, Sackville has witnessed a rapid growth in its public art scene, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Sackville Business Association (SBA), Sackville businesses, property owners, organizations, and local artists. Together, they have introduced five captivating murals along Sackville Drive, each telling its own unique story:

Summer Buzz:

Nestled at 592 Sackville Drive, “Summer Buzz” celebrates Lower Sackville’s designation as a butterfly way—a habitat for butterflies, bees, and beneficial bugs. Crafted by Jake Seibert, this vibrant mural serves as a colourful ode to the community’s commitment to preserving and nurturing nature’s delicate ecosystems.

Saturday Night at the Races:

Situated at 710 Sackville Drive, this piece pays homage to the rich history of harness racing at the Sackville Downs Raceway, which operated from 1955 to 1986. Artist Jake Seibert brings to life a historic photo of the raceway, capturing the excitement and nostalgia of this beloved local pastime.

We Will Dream of Better Worlds:

At 636 Sackville Drive, home of Sackville Public Library, this mural stands as a testament to the power of education and imagination. This collaborative effort between Jake Seibert and Ibe Ananaba depicts two children reading a book together with a flashlight, symbolizing the transformative potential of learning and the legacy of the historic Acadia School building.

Whispers of Blissful Tomorrow:

Located at 567 Sackville Drive, this mural invites viewers on a nostalgic journey through childhood innocence and joy. Created by Jake Seibert and Ibe Ananaba, this enchanting mural captures the essence of carefree youth, reminding us to cherish and nurture the spirit of childhood in every moment.

8th Generation:

Located at 541 Sackville Drive, this mural, titled “8th Generation,” is a creation by Lorne A. Julien, a talented Mi’kmaq artist. Symbolizing unity and peace, this vibrant masterpiece draws inspiration from the prophecy of the “7th Generation,” urging the current generation to pave the way for a brighter future through collective action and harmony.

Celebrating Nearly a Century Together at Acadia Hall

In the heart of Sackville stands Acadia Hall, a beloved landmark that has been bringing the community together for gatherings and celebrations for almost a century. More than a building, this hall has witnessed the unity, resilience, and common dreams of the Sackville community.

According to Linda Hefler, a dedicated volunteer with Acadia Recreation Club, the hall’s story began in 1924 when five locals met at the Temperance Hall on Old Sackville Road. With a $100 loan from Court Acadia and unwavering community support, they embarked on a mission to construct a true community centre. From door-to-door

campaigns rallying neighbours to contribute building supplies, to community picnics and spirited ball games held on the property, the journey to bring Acadia Hall to life was a testament to the commitment of the people of Sackville.

“I grew up playing ball on the women’s field behind Acadia Hall, which is now Acadia Park.”

Acadia Hall was completed in 1926 and has since been a venue for

LOVE, SACKVILLE 21

weddings, baby showers, elections, dances, parties, meetings, talent shows, and performances by local artists, including legendary Hank Snow. Hefler fondly remembers hosting dances with her parents Graham and Marge Hefler in the 1990s, creating cherished memories for attendees. “They were awesome dances and everyone would show up,” says Hefler. “I grew up playing ball on the women’s field behind Acadia Hall, which is now Acadia Park.”

In 2011, Acadia Recreation Club volunteers took on the significant task of transforming the underutilized ballfields on the property behind the hall into Acadia Park, an outdoor space fully maintained and operated by Acadia Recreation Club volunteers. With walking trails, gardens, an accessible playground, and a bandstand, it’s a cherished spot for residents of all ages. Acadia Recreation Club volunteers generously donate their time to not only care for the hall and grounds but also to keep rental costs affordable for community groups and residents.

Acadia Hall continues to host numerous events, including concerts and a farmers’ market every Saturday morning, with a mission of bringing people together. The community has made the most of the park and hall through hosting everything from birthday parties,

quilting gatherings, yoga and tai chi classes to live music events, makers’ markets, photoshoots, and much more.

As for plans for the future, Hefler says, “We are gaining momentum with new younger volunteers, and we will continue to improve on what we have here in the building and the park. Additionally, we’ll explore ways to ensure everyone in the community feels that our property is a safe, healthy place to bring families and friends together to enjoy the space.”

As Acadia Hall soon celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, it’s a time to honour its past, embrace the future, and extend heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers over the past century who have dedicated their time and effort to create and maintain this incredible space for our community.

If you would like to volunteer with Acadia Recreation Club, please email acadiarecclub@gmail.com.
