Sackville’s All-Star: James Sheppard
James Sheppard’s hockey journey began in Sackville, but his talent and determination took him to the highest levels of the sport. A firstoverall pick in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and ninth-overall selection in the National Hockey League (NHL), Sheppard defied the odds, overcoming a potential careerending knee injury to compete in the world’s top leagues. From playing with the Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, and New York Rangers to winning two Spengler Cups with Team Canada, his career is a testament to dedication and passion for the game.
Sheppard first stepped onto the ice at four years old, though the experience ended in tears until his father took him off. A year later, he tried again, and from that moment, hockey became his passion. Growing up, he spent countless hours playing on First
Lake, at the Sackville Arena, and in the Sackville Sports Stadium. Watching older players compete, he knew that was where he wanted to be. His time with the Sackville Flyers left him with lifelong memories and friendships.
“Being young and playing hockey with the best players in the world, I learned so much about hockey and the game of life.”
Street hockey on Cabot Crescent, off of First Lake Drive in Lower Sackville, played a huge role in shaping Sheppard’s skills. Alongside his two best friends,

Andy and Smitty, he spent endless hours perfecting his game. His talent led him to play for the Dartmouth Subways on a strong, competitive team before advancing to three seasons with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. By his third year, they had an exceptional team but fell just short of their goal. With relentless dedication and hard work, Sheppard reached the pinnacle of junior hockey, earning his place as a top NHL draft pick.
“Sackville, you will always be my home.”
At nineteen, he made his NHL debut with the Minnesota Wild. Competing in the best hockey league in the world was both a challenge and a privilege, teaching him invaluable lessons both on and off the ice. “The NHL was a beast of a league,” Sheppard reflects. “Being young and playing hockey with the best players in the world, I learned so much about hockey and the game of life.” His career took him to the San Jose Sharks and the New York Rangers, where he played alongside Hall of Famers and some of the most talented
athletes in the sport. Scoring in the NHL playoffs against the Los Angeles Kings became one of the defining moments of his career—a reward for years of perseverance and sacrifice.
His hockey journey extended beyond North America, leading to eight incredible years playing in Europe. Representing Team Canada and winning the Spengler Cup twice were career highlights, solidifying his place in the sport he loved.
Through every challenge and achievement, he remains deeply grateful to those who supported him. His parents’ decision to buy a house on Cabot Crescent set the foundation for his hockey dreams. In recognition of his accomplishments, Sheppard was inducted into the Sackville Sports Heritage Hall of Fame in 2024. With gratitude, Sheppard shares, “Sackville, you will always be my home.”

A Day in the Life WITH DUNCAN, STEPHANIE & HARVEY
Join Sackville residents Duncan, Stephanie, and their dog Harvey as they show us how they would spend the perfect summer day in Sackville. From morning to evening, they’ll take us through their favourite local spots, share the activities that make their day special, and reveal the places that make Sackville feel like home. Get a glimpse of our community’s charm through the eyes of those who know it best.
Morning Coffee
“We’d start our morning off with coffee at Apartment 3 Espresso Bar (833 Sackville Drive) — an iced latte to get the caffeine flowing.”
Stroll with Harvey
“Next, we’d take Harvey, our almost 2-year-old golden retriever, for a walk at First Lake. The variety of trails makes it the perfect spot for a dog walk.”
Lunch Break
“For lunch, we’d head to Freeman’s Little New York (552 Sackville Drive) — their burgers are packed with flavour!”

Patio Hangout
“In the afternoon, we’d soak up the sun on the patio at TAPestry Beer Bar (833 Sackville Drive).” Duncan would try whatever’s new on tap, while Stephanie would go for a dark beer recommended by Ian, the owner, and Harvey would of course tag along.
Dinner to Go
“Dinner would be takeout from Aviyal Indian Kitchen (99 Cobequid Road) — we’re slowly working our way through the menu! The portions are huge, so there’s always enough for the next day.”
Late-Night Adventure
“We’d wrap up the day with a late-night walk around the neighbourhood with Harvey and if we’re in the mood to watch a game, we’d stop at Boston Pizza (710 Sackville Drive).”

Sackville’s Legacy of Care: How Residents Shaped Healthcare for Generations
Did you know the Cobequid Community Health Centre (CCHC) that stands today would not be here without the determination of Sackville residents? It was through their tireless efforts that the first-ever medical centre in Sackville came to life, changing the community’s healthcare landscape forever.
“We need to come back to caring, to looking after each other.”
In the 1970s, Sackville was rapidly growing, yet residents had to travel to Halifax or Dartmouth for
emergency care and essential services. This gap in local healthcare services sparked a passionate movement among the community. Two dedicated nurses, Shirley Freer and Carol Crosby (pictured on the next page), led the charge, inspired to bring healthcare closer to home. As Freer once said, “We need to come back to caring, to looking after each other.”
But the vision for a local healthcare facility was not achieved by two people alone. It was the collective energy of Sackville’s residents, businesses, and organizations that made it a reality. Fundraising events such as bake sales, auctions, and benefit dinners were held to

raise money and awareness for the new healthcare facility. With overwhelming support from the community, the Cobequid Multi-Service Centre (CMSC) officially opened in 1980 at the former site of the Memory Lane liquor store, offering general healthcare, diagnostic imaging, and outpatient clinics. It was a win for Sackville—a facility built by and for the community.
As the area continued to grow, so did the demand for healthcare services. By the late 1980s, the need for an emergency department became apparent. In response, the community rallied once again, raising funds to establish Eastern Canada’s first free-standing emergency department in 1987.
This development meant residents no longer had to make the long journey to Halifax for urgent care.
However, the facility’s success didn’t stop there. By the mid1990s, the CMSC was outgrowing its space, and plans for expansion began. In 1996, a second floor was added to accommodate the growing number of patients. Yet, the need for a more advanced healthcare centre was clear, and by the early 2000s, discussions began about constructing a state-of-theart facility that would meet Sackville’s evolving needs.
Once again, the community, with the support of the Cobequid Health Centre Foundation, rose to the challenge, supporting a large-scale fundraising campaign that secured both individual donations and corporate sponsorships. In 2006, the CMSC moved to a modern building on Freer Lane, rebranded as the Cobequid Community Health Centre (CCHC). This new space offered expanded emergency services, state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, and a broader range of outpatient clinics.
Today, the Cobequid Community Health Centre, as part of Nova Scotia Health, serves over 150,000 patients annually and remains a symbol of the power of unity, determination, and grassroots action.
