Hi and welcome to our last edition of 2025. It's Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistmas, as Noddy Holder sings... Well almost.
I'm excited, I get seven weeks between editions which means I can take a break over Christmas and wind down a little. I've even moved the copy date for the Winter edition to Monday 29 Dec as it was previously Christmas Day and I'm not sure people would be booking adverts and sending me artwork!
This edition is full of Christmas cheer, please do all you can to shop locally with the great independent businesses in the area.
Following our move out of West Studios I'm back working from a studio space in town and am frequenting the town centre again.
Thursday this week I had some shopping and jobs to do, town was buzzing, the market was packed, shops were busy, and the sun even showed up! The Tipi in the market place was full, its placement at the heart of the market was a really positive move I think, and the revitalised space seems to be attracting more people into town.
As a result, I've added a new Markets section to our what's on events, the aim is to keep you better informed of what's happening in the market.
Enjoy this edition, have a fantastic Christmas and New Year, stay safe and I'll catch up again next year. Happy Christmas.

The Crooked Christmas Tree
Meet this month's cover artist, Jon Boam
Words: Simon Paterson
Images: Jon Boam
Whenever I popped into the shop at West Studios, there was always one item that caught my eye: Slime Farts! It’s a colouring book filled with Jon Boam’s wonderfully monstrous illustrations, completely unique – like Jon, in a good way.
Jon has been on my list of favourite local artists for a long time, and we (S41 and S40 mags) are privileged to showcase his work with you.
I caught up with Jon in the Rose and Crown on Chatsworth Road, and we bonded over Henry Cavill, video games, art, education, cartoons, Adventure Time, and all things nerdy.
From a young age, Jon was the kid doodling in his sketchbook in the corner. For him, it was escapism from a school system not designed for brains like ours to develop and flourish.
“As a child I always had a sketchbook with me, and I still do – it’s my safe space. School was a difficult time for me, but I made it to Chesterfield College with my Art GCSE and studied Art & Design. I found my feet there and eventually made it to Leeds Met, where I graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree. I think life is about finding what you want to do, not what you are forced to do,” says Jon.
Wise words from Jon, and ones to live by. It’s clear he has found his purpose and his passion.
I asked Jon about his most memorable work.
“A real high point for me was working on character design for the Netflix show The Midnight Gospel. It was created by American comedian and podcaster Duncan Trussell, who I’m a big fan of.
“I first met Jesse Moynihan, one of the storyboard artists from Adventure Time, at a comic book fair where he had a table. We got chatting, and I showed him my illustrations, telling him how much I admired his work on Adventure Time and how much I enjoyed the podcast he did with Duncan Trussell.
“A few years later, I ran into Jesse again, and we talked more about Adventure Time and Duncan Trussell. Then, a couple of years after that, Jesse messaged me out of the blue: ‘You liked Duncan Trussell, didn’t you? We’re doing a project with him and want you to come and work with us as a character designer.’ I was blown away,” smiles Jon.
Jon has a very distinctive, fun style, and I was keen to know how it came about, and what his influences were – and still are.
“I guess it just developed over time. The artists and shows I love, like Adventure Time, have really shaped my style. I’ve also always been fascinated by ancient Egyptian 2D wall paintings –the shapes, lines and that flat style of drawing. I have always loved cartoons,” says Jon. Naturally, I asked him, “What was your favourite cartoon growing up?”
“Probably Thundercats! Also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but as a grown-up, Adventure Time,” grins Jon.
I asked Jon which project or show he would most like to work on, and he said:
“My own! I would love to create my own TV show, develop the script and artwork. That’s the dream, really,” states Jon.
I hope you enjoy his fab take on the Spire on our cover and scan the QR code to follow Jon on Instagram.

Aly Berry
Chesterfield's Rising Jazz Star
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: Aly Berry
'Aly Berry is a jazz singer and songwriter known for her smooth, sultry vocals and distinctive style that captivates audiences. Her music combines a passion for storytelling with a deep appreciation for jazz, creating a whole new sound.' hotvox.co.uk
With 10k plus followers on IG and a YouTube video of her first release “The Wrong Man” heading to 100k views, Aly Berry is a name you need to look out for and one we’re going to hear a lot of in the future. Aly is from Chesterfield, attended Brockwell Junior School, St Mary’s High School and has spared some time to talk music and comfort food with us.
Aly works full time on her music career, 100% independent she is responsible for all elements of her art. Writing, composition, social media, venue bookings, promotion, marketing, website, streaming content, video, rehearsals, studio time… it’s all down to her. “I’m at the stage where I really need a manager or the support of a label,” explains Aly. “It will help enormously and allow me to concentrate on my music, I write my own lyrics and carry a notebook around with me all the time in which I’m constantly jotting stuff down.”
Right now, Aly is doing five or six shows a week in and around the jazz clubs of Mayfair and Soho after moving to London at the age of 18. The music press describes her as ‘one of the UK's biggest rising jazz artists’ and it looks like the move to London has worked out, but it didn’t happen overnight.
What was the plan – did you know it was what you wanted to do? “I was a shy kid at school,” says Aly. “I always knew I had a passion for music but started out modelling at 14 and halfway through year 13 I quit school and moved to London.
“I self-schooled myself and through my modelling work was able to save and launch my music career. It was very difficult moving away from home, but I had to give it a try.
“My uncle was in a band called St Etienne and so I started working with him, we experimented with my music as I tried to find my sound. My uncle moved away and as I moved around various places working I ended up as a sound engineer working at a venue in Mayfair.
“Paul Higgs came into the restaurant one day, I’d seen him on stage many times, he’s a highly accomplished trumpet player so I plucked up the courage to introduce myself and asked if he’d listen to a demo tape if I sent it.
“This was a game changer. I spent some time in his studio, and we ended up working together. He’s worked with the likes of Peggy Lee, Shorty Rogers, has performed in Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and puts the melodies to my lyrical scribblings.”
I asked how Aly ended up singing jazz, it feels like the sound of an older generation and not something picked up by someone so young. “It’s all down to my time in London. I fell in love with jazz, Amy Winehouse, Eartha Kitt etc and it helped drive me, once I’d found my voice I was determined to make a success of it, I’m perhaps an old soul at heart.”
Aly was fantastic in drumming up some renowned artists to help her record her debut album, “I wanted to have the best jazz musicians I could,” she adds. “Dave Green, bass player with Charlie Watts, Neil Bullock who has played with Chuck Berry and Scott Hamilton, an amazing tenor sax player from America, I attended so many of his shows before approaching him to see if he’d like to record with me, it wasn’t an easy task to convince him but he eventually said yes, recording the sax from Italy.”
To date Aly’s performances have all been London centric but she hopes to be able to put on a small northern tour at some point soon. Her first live performance was just 18 months ago at The Ned Hotel, from here Aly has been busy producing showreels etc and this hard work and determination is starting to pay off.
I asked about Aly’s favourite venue in which to play and she mentioned the Boisdale in Belgravia, it was clear she loves performing and this was simply up there as a place to be. The owner of the Boisdale often attends Aly’s performances and put her forward for the Boisdale Music Awards – Jazz / Blues Artist of the Year 2025. An event hosted by Jools Holland where she met many great people and was runner up.
I was keen to know if Aly would like to collaborate with anyone, but her reply was one where she would have loved to perform with Amy Winehouse, Ruth Brown, or Peggy Lee.
When quizzed about her best dream venue it was a surprise to learn that it was something like the O2 Academy in Sheffield, a large venue, not typically
associated with jazz and on the doorstep of her hometown.
Regarding home, Aly tries to get home as often as she can, but her London schedule means this is quite infrequent, she loves home and like anyone is homesick for her family. I asked about her performing at home, “I’d love to at some point, perhaps as a stop on my Northern mini tour if I get around to scheduling things in,” she says.
I thought we ought to try and find out what makes Aly tick away from music so quizzed her on five favourites.
1. Film – Not one film in particular but any old school rom com.
2. Season – Winter she said without a pause.
3. Comfort Meal – Japanese food.
4. Time of the week – She couldn’t answer this as in her life there are no weekends to split the week up, she often has to ask herself ‘what day is it?’
5. Place in the world – home, “not too corny?” she added.
Please check out Aly’s music, her links are opposite. The album is being drip fed online with tracks released at timely intervals but if you want to check out the album or CD they are available to purchase from Tallbird Records on Soresby Street in town.
Last up if you want a few hours of laidback jazz featuring some of Aly’s music Spotify has curated a playlist for us, just scan the QR to enjoy.
Huge thanks to Aly for taking time out to chat to us and I hope to see her live locally at some point soon.

The Dance Hub
New Life for Hasland Village Hall
Words: Paul Chapman
Hayley Draper has been running dance classes at Hasland Village Hall, The Dance Hub, for nine years together with classes in Beighton, Sheffield; it’s kept her extremely busy.
Recent council lead changes resulted in classes halting for a while but when Hayley was approached to see if she wanted to manage the building, she put a plan in place and came back to the council with a proposal. This successful bid has secured the future of the building for the next ten years as ‘The Dance Hub’ and as the important community asset it is, a thriving village hall.
I met up with Hayley at the hall to find out what goes on and to see if we can encourage more people to get involved. “The easiest way to describe what we do is Strictly Come Dancing for everyone,” says Hayley. “When Strictly season starts on TV we get an influx of new dancers looking to see what classes are available, it’s an Autumn event so it’s typically rainy and dark outside and people seek out new ways to stay active.
“Our daytime over 50s dance classes are always popular, we pride ourselves on taking in all abilities, you really don’t need to be a dancer to get involved. It’s all about movement and if people are smiling, we like to think we’re getting it right.”
“We do have classes for those with a bit more rhythm and skill but we have a series of classes available that will suit all abilities.” The Dance Hubs Live Band Social Dances on Sundays bring together a live band, dancing, drinks and cakes, and is a fabulous social event for people to while away the time, this place clearly has community at its heart.
“Hayley was keen to point out that it really is as much about the social side of things as the dancing but it’s the opportunity to move, to connect with each other and those around you.
“Our solo Latin class gives people the chance to reclaim an hour a week away from the kids and pressures of home life or it might be a date night for a couple to get to spend some quality time together.”
Hayley moved to Chesterfield in her 20s and has always danced, she married into a dancing family and has danced professionally competing with her partner. Her son and his partner have continued to compete professionally across the world. “We were training the kids since they were three years old and it’s been fabulous to watch their progress,” says Hayley.
In 2004 she took on the family studio in Sheffield and later started up additional classes in Hasland which proved to be a popular move.
“The team here at The Dance Hub have worked with me for many years, most of them came to dance as children and have stayed to become part of the instructing team. They’re a great bunch and they have that ability to be supporting and offer excellent advice without scaring anyone away. You will always find us welcoming and professional.”
Alongside the classes the hall is available to book out as any village hall should be, weddings, birthdays, celebrations, community events and classes, they can accommodate them all at the hall.

The
Dance Hub Classes
Children's Classes: Our Mini Dancers sessions for little ones aged 18 months and up, where parents join in too. From age 3, children move into our Mini Movers classes on Wednesdays, and we also run our Mini Stars (age 6+) class on Wednesday evenings. Our kids' programme combines Cha Cha, Latin and Street Dance – giving that Strictly sparkle alongside highenergy, modern routines. As ballroom and Latin trained dancers ourselves, we're proud to offer something different from the more traditional ballet or tap schools, creating a space that's full of movement, confidence and fun.
Daytime Stroll Classes (Over 50s): Hugely popular and all about keeping active and connected. Our motto is that it doesn't matter whether you get the steps right - if you're moving and smiling, you're winning! We've recently introduced Stroll & Tea sessions, bringing everyone together for dancing and socialising afterwards, exactly what I wanted to create.
Easy Steps (Evening Class): For those who work during the day, our evening version of the stroll class – set to upbeat 80s music and already proving a hit!
Solo Latin Classes: Perfect for anyone who wants to dance without a partner. These fun, confidence-building classes cover everything from Cha Cha, Samba and Rumba to Bachata and Argentine Tango.
Adult Beginners Ballroom & Latin for Couples: Our most popular core class! A weekly "date night" where couples can spend quality time together, learn something new, and have a laugh in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Social Dances: Events throughout the year, open to everyone – whether they learn with us or elsewhere – to celebrate the joy of dancing and community.

Westfield Infant School
THANK YOU!
Words & images: Simon Paterson
Every parent is nervous about their child starting school: will they make friends, what if they don’t like their teacher, what if they hate school dinners, will they be scared? The list goes on. I remember all the above running riot in my head, and more, as I walked my daughter, Florie, to school on her very first day at Westfield Infant School.
Three years later, she has left Westfield as a confident, popular little girl with aboveaverage academic skills and knowledge. But more importantly, she loved her time there and already hopes to go back one day ... as a primary school teacher!
Florie’s journey began in Reception with Mrs Minskip, a wonderful teacher whose kindness, patience, and perseverance made the perfect start to any child's educational adventure. I remember getting to school pick-up early just so I could catch a glimpse of Florie sat on the classroom floor with her friends, listening earnestly as Mrs Minskip read to them at the end of each day. I cherish that memory dearly and hope one day to be stood in the same spot, peeking through the classroom window at my grandchild.
With solid foundations in place, Florie moved into Year 1 under the tutorship of the Mary Poppins-like Mrs Blackbourn; I’m certain she
arrives at school every day via umbrella! If you asked AI to design the perfect Year 1 teacher, it would describe all the attributes, skills, and personality traits that Mrs Blackbourn has in spades. Her nurturing and empathetic approach to teaching fully prepared Florie for her final year at Westfield, where it was time to knuckle down and get ready for Junior School ...
Florie’s final year was spent in Mrs Nash’s classroom. Within weeks, Florie and Mrs Nash had developed an unbreakable bond, she just knew how to get the best out of Florie. Florie started Year 2 as a shy little girl and left as a confident young lady, ready to start Junior School.
Mrs Nash managed to balance a no-nonsense approach to teaching with humour and fun, no mean feat! Thanks to her, every child left with the foundations they needed to hit the ground running at their chosen junior school. Florie truly loved Mrs Nash, and I’m not ashamed to say we both shed a tear on her last day at Westfield. Florie’s three years at Westfield were not only the best years of her life, but they were also the best of mine. She started as a nervous four-year-old, unsure of herself, and left as a confident, happy child who met or exceeded the expected standards in every subject (which is more than I can say for her dad ...). Not once did she say, “I don’t want to go to school today,” which is the biggest compliment any child can pay a school.
Writing about Florie’s journey at Westfield wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Headmaster, Mr Whitham, who, come rain or shine, snow or hail, stood at the school gates welcoming every pupil by name as they crossed the playground into a fully inclusive, inspirational environment led by a socially conscious leader. Thank you.
A huge thank you to the caretakers, lunch makers and supervisors, receptionist, teachers, teaching assistants, and all the support staff who make Westfield such an exceptional school.
A special mention to Mrs Hoddinott, Mrs Green, and Miss Blakeley (TA's), you each hold a special place in Florie’s heart and her future.

Jólabókaflóð
'The Christmas Book Flood'
Words: Simon Paterson
Photo by Einar H. Reynis on Unsplash
Every family has its own festive traditions. Some of us love wearing matching PJs (no comment), my Granddad Paterson used to stand for the Queen’s (now King’s) speech, Bekah fills a pillow case with presents and places it at the bottom of the kid's beds, ready for Christmas morning. But in Iceland, there’s a tradition so beautifully simple that it has captured imaginations worldwide: Jólabókaflóð, the “Christmas Book Flood.”
On Christmas Eve, Icelandic families exchange books as gifts. The evening isn’t spent rushing through wrapping paper or queueing for the latest gadget, it’s spent curled up together, reading. Imagine it: the fire glowing, mugs of hot chocolate in hand, and each family member lost in a story chosen just for them. It’s a tradition that celebrates not only the joy of giving but the joy of slowing down, of sharing quiet moments, and of letting words weave their magic.
How It Began: The roots of Jólabókaflóð stretch back to the Second World War. With imports restricted, Icelanders turned to books, paper was one of the few things readily available. Publishers began releasing new titles in the autumn, and families eagerly awaited the annual catalogue of fresh releases. Books became the ultimate Christmas gift, and over time, the tradition of reading together on Christmas Eve became a cherished part of Icelandic culture.
Why It Resonates Today: In our fast-paced, screen-filled lives, the idea of a family evening devoted to reading feels almost radical. Yet it’s exactly what many of us crave: connection, calm, and a chance to step into another world.
Reading together doesn’t mean everyone has to share the same book. The beauty lies in the individuality of each choice, Bekah likes a festive romance novel, I love an epic fantasy, Evangeline reads thrillers and Florie loves a humorous adventure!
Starting Your Own Tradition: Here’s how you could bring *Jólabókaflóð* into your home this year.
Choose books thoughtfully: think about what each family member loves, mystery, humour, history, or adventure.
Pair with a treat: Icelanders often gift chocolate alongside the book. Why not add a festive twist with hot cocoa, mulled apple juice, or even a tin filled with homemade biscuits?
Share the experience: at the end of the night, talk about your books. What drew you in? What surprised you? It’s a gentle way to connect across generations.
Recommendations: Instead of my usual book reviews, here are four book suggestions tailored to different ages and interests.
For Mum: Why Mummy Drinks by Gill Sims (HarperCollins). A witty novel about being a mum, resilience, and the absurdities of modern life. Perfect for sinking into on a winter’s night.
For Dad: Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang (Penguin). A dark, imaginative fantasy where alchemy and ambition collide. A gripping tale of power, morality, and the price of progress, perfect for fans of richly built worlds and thought-provoking adventure. One of my favourite reads this year!
For Teenagers: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (Henry Holt & Company). A thrilling fantasy heist with unforgettable characters, ideal for teens who love fast-paced plots and rich world-building.
For Children (around 6-9 years old): The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher (Penguin). A magical, funny, and heart-warming tale that captures the wonder of Christmas through the eyes of a child.
A Gift That Lasts: So this year, alongside the crackers and carols, why not try something new? Start your own Christmas Book Flood. Give each other the gift of stories, and let Christmas Eve be a night where imagination takes centre stage.

Time to get the hiking boots out and stroll out for some fab views of Chesterfield.
The walk starts in Holymoorside and is a fairly strenuous 4.3 miles (including the stretch to Highfield House Farm). It's quite boggy underfoot with stepping stones so perhaps not one to do after heavy rain! Plus you can have a pint at the The Lamb or take in a bite to eat half way round (Highfield House Farm).
There is plenty of on street parking in Holymoorside village but please be considerate.
From The Bulls Head, cross over and walk up Loads Road to the Lamb Inn, continue up the road, past Chander Hill Road on the right, once the houses start to thin out you reach the Old Star Cottage on the Right. Take the signposted bridleway (1) Opposite.
Pause as you climb to admire views over to Chesterfield and the crooked spire (2).
As the wall ends you can see Highfield House Farm, your hilltop destination (3), continue straight ahead on the main path with a fence on your right, which again becomes a wall (4).
Follow this path, take a look behind and see if you can spot the spire (5). You start to descend through trees, at a junction of paths, stay ahead with a fence on your right and continue to reach the road.
Turn right up the road for a short distance and then go left at a footpath (6) to descend through a wood where you will reach a footbridge (7) over the river.
Cross the bridge and follow the path up through the woods past the old abandoned pumping station (8) on the right.
Continue on the path crossing a stream using the stepping
stones (9), continue uphill to cross the same stream.
Pass through the gap and follow the path with the wall on your left (10) to a gate to reach the farm buildings.
Continue up the drive past Stonehay Farm to reach the road.
This is your half way point - if you would like refreshments, turn right a short distance along the road to Highfield House Farm and Café. Please take care this is a busy road.
To continue the walk from the path from Stonehay Farm turn left along the road for a short way and left down to Stanedge Golf Club (11).
Follow the drive to the clubhouse, continue past Walton Hay Farm (12) through the second gate and across the golf course to reach a footpath sign by a wall (13), turn left, with the wall on your right.
Cross the small bridge, follow the edge of the green and the woods to reach a sign ’public footpath to Holymoorside’ (14) pointing right through the woods.
Head down through the woods (15) until you eventually reach a gap stile (16), go through and drop down to a track.
Turn right at the track towards the farm buildings, make a left turn following the fence towards the trees, cross the stream and follow this path, staying on the lower track with the wall on your left (17), through a gate and past the pond, through the gap stile (18) and straight ahead to the road.
Turn left along the road to return to The Bulls Head.

Scouting
Two contributions hit the in-basket this edition relating to two different Scout groups in the area. One focuses on the importance of volunteering and is one of a number of articles we hope to feature relating to volunteer organisations, the second (over page) is a call to action to pick up some fashion bargains... although this hit us just before print so you'll need to move quick, and I recognise that not all editions will be delivered prior to the event.
Together We Are Stronger
38th Chesterfield Scout Group

Join the movement to help your local community – Make a difference by getting involved.
One of the many sad legacies of Covid 19 is a drop in volunteering numbers. Since the pandemic, the whole country has seen a reduction in formal volunteering. Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire also have below national average involvement in monthly formal volunteering, meaning it’s tougher than ever for community groups that rely on volunteers. The pace of life and work commitments are barriers to people volunteering but there are so many good reasons to find a way to support a community group and build a stronger neighbourhood.
Over the next few issues, we will be shining a spotlight on a range of groups who are in desperate need of volunteers to keep going. We are hoping to inspire our community to
get involved with formal volunteering (regular commitment to a group, club, or programme) and build a stronger community.
38th Chesterfield Scout Group has been running for 61 years based at the Loundsley Green Community Centre and meet on Wednesdays. They are a fun-loving Scout Group that has a focus on outdoor and adventurous activities.
This summer they organised and ran successful camps for all their sections (Beavers 6-8 years old, Cubs 8-10 years old and Scouts 10-14 years old). This amounted to 30 children spending between two and seven nights away from home. For 10 members this was their first time camping in tents. This is a huge achievement as the planning and preparation for any camp is challenging. One of the leaders attended every camp meaning he gave up 14 days of his summer to help the group have a memorable camp, thanks Charlie you are a star. The Group like to provide adventurous activities for the children because it promotes teamwork and leadership while developing confidence and resilience. They can offer climbing, abseiling, caving, kayaking, sailing, archery, air riffle shooting, and other activities synonymous
with scouting such as pioneering, backwoods cooking and bushcraft.
The young people love Scouting because they build friendships and enjoy a wide variety of activities.
Max (10, Scout) said, “I love the different activities like kayaking and abseiling, I felt brave and proud after I abseiled off the bridge as it was nerve racking. The camps are great because we go regularly, and they are fun. We always play lots of games and learn new skills.”
Lewis (12, Scout) said, “I love the camps our group does with my favourite being the gliding camp. It was amazing to fly in a glider. I’m really excited for Poacher camp next summer.”
However, the Group is a victim of their own success, they currently have had to close their admissions as they are working at capacity with the volunteers they currently have.
Group Leader Volunteer Mark says, "It is our deepest hope that we could have more adult volunteers to help out at our group so that every young person who wishes to join our scout group will find a space waiting for them. Because Scouting isn’t just about knots and campfires - it’s about building confidence, character, and lifelong friendships. We wish
we could offer more opportunities, so more young people can discover more, have more adventures, and experience the sense of belonging that Scouting so wonderfully provides."
The group have dedicated leaders who plan each weekly activity and understand all the elements of running a scout group, but they need extra people to help at each session. If you enjoy nurturing primary aged children or inspiring teenagers, then 38th Chesterfield would love to hear from you. In an ideal world, they would love for people to commit to come to either the Beavers, Cubs or Scouts to help get involved with weekly meetings, but any support even on an ad hoc basis would be gratefully received.
If you have an interest in adventurous activities, you would be in a great position to support the young people. Adults get to enjoy the fun activities too. Interested? Contact the group by email: lg38thchesterfield@outlook.com
There are many other Scout or Girlguiding Groups across Chesterfield so it is possible to help out in your local area.

The Shiatsu Bus
Words: Simon Paterson & Dan Smith
Images: Dan Smith
For the last three years I have been playing for Chesterfield in their tennis team, something I never thought I would do again and it is all thanks to, Dan! Eight years of lower back and pelvis pain meant I could no longer play tennis!
After Dan contacted the magazine about advertising with us, I thought I would try his services before going to print. Turns out this was one of the best decisions I ever made. Dan has given me my life back!
Dan deduced that one of my legs was over an inch shorter than the other, a result of my pelvis being higher on one side. This revelation explained the persistent lower back and pelvis pain that had plagued me for years.
I've recommended Dan's services to several friends and family members over the years, all of whom have experienced significant improvements in their physical well-being. Remarkably, one of them has even stowed away his walking sticks for good.
So, what can you expect when the Shiatsu Bus visits? The experience begins with a consultation, Dan discusses your health history, lifestyle, and goals. This allows him to tailor the session to your needs, ensuring that you get the most out of your visit. All treatments are carried out in a private, comfortable space within the bus, ensuring your privacy and comfort.
Shiatsu massage is a traditional Japanese therapy that is done fully clothed and involves gentle stretching techniques and applying pressure to specific points on the body, helping to balance the body's energy, ease sore muscles, and promote physical and mental well-being. It's a deeply relaxing and therapeutic experience that many people find beneficial for a range of conditions, from stress and anxiety to chronic pain. This unique service brings the benefits of Shiatsu massage right to your doorstep. The Shiatsu Bus is more than just a mobile massage service. It's a fully fledged wellness clinic on wheels, offering a service designed to promote physical and mental wellbeing and is recognised by the NHS!
I cannot recommend The Shiatsu Bus enough, that's me in the bus below! Dan really has changed my life!
For anyone seeking to improve their health and well-being please call Dan on 07513 634 863.

Garden Tips
December in the Garden
Words: Transition Chesterfield & Inspire Community Garden
Photo: By Seoyeon Choi on Unsplash
After a mild and lingering autumn, it may only be this month that the garden truly settles into dormancy. Use this quieter period to care for your soil, plan ahead, and support the wildlife that shares your space.
Protect your soil: If you only do one thing in the garden, probably the best thing you can do is to mulch. Cover bare patches with a thick layer of compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure. This improves soil life and locks in nutrients and moisture ready for spring.
Prune overgrown shrubs and hedges: Now that most plants are fully dormant, it’s a good time for hard pruning. Buddleia, hazel, and overgrown deciduous hedges can all be cut back and neatened up.
Prune fruit trees (apples and pears only): Aim for an open “wine-glass” shape so light and air reach all parts of the tree. Don’t prune plums, cherries, or apricots until summer to avoid silver leaf disease.
Take hardwood cuttings:
A no-cost, low-effort way to grow new plants. Try willow, dogwood, currants, or gooseberries. Insert pencil-thick cuttings into a deep pot of compost
and leave outdoors in a sheltered spot.
Leave a little untidiness: Old seed heads, hollow stems, and piles of leaves provide essential winter shelter for wildlife. Tidy only paths and areas where rot might spread to healthy plants.
Plan and dream: Browse seed catalogues with a mug of something warm. Choose peat-free compost and UK-grown/ organic seed suppliers to keep your gardening sustainable.
Care for houseplants: Reduce watering, keep them away from direct heat, and mist occasionally. Grouping plants together helps maintain humidity. Feed the birds and collect rainwater: Birds need food and fresh water through winter, especially in cold snaps. If you’ve not already fitted a water butt, winter is an ideal time - saving mains water next year and reducing runoff.
A reminder that Transition Chesterfield’s annual Potato Day takes place on Saturday 31 January 2026, selling numerous varieties of seed potatoes, plus onions, garlic, peas and beans. Check transitionchesterfield.org. uk for details.

The Wedding Present
Thursday
18 December
Buxton Opera House
David Lewis Gedge and his semi-legendary band celebrate a special anniversary live across Ireland and the United Kingdom.
The Wedding Present was born in Leeds, in 1985.
Rising from the ashes of a band called The Lost Pandas, The Wedding Present was assembled by David Gedge [singing & guitar] and Keith Gregory [bass], when they enlisted the services of Peter Solowka [guitar] and Shaun Charman [drums].
The band’s first single – ‘Go Out And Get ’Em, Boy!’ – was released in May 1985 and now shares its title with the first volume of David’s autobiography, in which he describes the early days of playing in and around Leeds.
Since 1985, The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles; not bad for a group that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy throughout. From George Best [“an unmitigated delight” (NME)] onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own. Pachamama will Thank You
Words: Transtion Chesterfield
Photo: Andy Childs, Paul Chapman & Transition Chesterfield
Pachamama 'Mother Earth' might sigh a bit at Christmas, it can be a little resource hungry and whatever your thoughts on global warming it can't be bad thing to try and lessen the impact we have a little.
Transition Chesterfield campaign and work throughout the year to find ways in which we can be more caring for the planet and below are their ideas to help.
How To Make Your Christmas More Sustainable
At this time of year everyone is busy preparing for the forthcoming festivities. Christmas is about spending time with friends and family, sharing food and having a good time. It doesn’t need to be an expensive or wasteful time. Here are a few ideas that might inspire you to be more sustainable and save some money this Christmas and have fun doing it!
Presents: Try not to add to the avalanche of unwanted presents arriving in charity shops in January. Find out what people really want. Surveys show that many of us now value shared experiences over material things. Maybe a trip to Chatsworth, mug painting at one of the pottery studios in Chesterfield or a beauty treatment. Buy local to help local businesses. Spend time finding unusual gifts at charity shops or second hand from ebay or Vinted. If you can’t find anything suitable you can buy a charity shop gift card, which allows the recipient to buy what they want from their local charity shop. The Salvation Army charity shop in Chesterfield sell the gift cards.
Food: You could prepare meals before your guests arrive and freeze them, this gives you more time to spend with your family and guests on the day. If you like to cook, plan your meals and ingredients in advance, this should result in
less food waste. Encourage your guests to bring their sandwich boxes to take home their share of leftovers. If you still have lots of food, which you aren’t going to eat you can advertise it on Olio, someone else might appreciate it more than you.
Decorations: Use old or second hand decorations rather than buying new. Make your own decorations from things that you might usually recycle or throw away. The garlands in the picture are made from crisp bags! You will find lots of ideas on Pinterest. Make your own crackers with better gifts and jokes! You can buy cracker snaps online. Make your own party hats. The ones in the picture are made from cereal boxes with paint and ‘jewels’ added. Decorations made with children or grandchildren will be treasured and brought out year after year.
Remember that the Christmas holiday is a chance to spend time with your loved ones. Do the things you enjoy. Simple things like jigsaws, board games and a walk in the park cost nothing but mean everything. Have a great sustainable Christmas.
Ed: Pictured is our S40 Local Christmas tree that featured in the local Christmas tree festival a few times, constructed from the pallets S40 is delivered on and lit by Paperstar Lights, a plastic free alternative to fairy lights... and much more attractive I think.
The second shows a recent room decorated for a party for which we made 10m of paper chains! Used once and looking for a new owner drop me a message if you can use them (paul@s40local. co.uk) and they're yours for a tenner which we'll donate to Ashgate Hospice!
Enjoy your slightly more sustainable Christmas.
