Hello and welcome to the December edition of S41 Local Magazine.

By the time this drops through your letterbox, I’ve no doubt the Christmas decs will be up and the stereo will be pumping out festive tunes on repeat!

Small confession: Bekah and I watched a Christmas film on the 15th of November. Too soon?

On the 12th of November, Florie (aged 7) stated, unequivocally, that Santa does not exist! This, of course, caught us off guard and we spent the next ten minutes convincing her she was incorrect and that we must continue to believe if we are to receive presents! She was having none of it. You’ve got to pick your battles …

How cool is our Christmas front cover by the super-cool and talented Jon Boam? A Christmas Tree Spire. Genius!

The Christmas Gift Guide is back (thanks to Paul at S40 for putting it together). If anyone would care to buy me the coffee machine from 1st Class Kitchens for the new office, it would be greatly received and put to very good use.

It has been an absolute pleasure creating each and every edition of S41 this year. I want to say a huge thank you to all the local indie businesses that have advertised with us in 2025, but most of all, a big thank you to you, the reader. By reading the magazine and shopping local, you have strengthened the local economy and supported your friends, neighbours, and Chesterfield’s wonderful local businesses. Well done you!

Meet this month's cover artist, Jon Boam

Whenever I popped into the shop at West Studios, there was always one item that caught my eye: Slime Farts! It’s a colouring book filled with Jon Boam’s wonderfully monstrous illustrations, completely unique – like Jon, in a good way.

Jon has been on my list of favourite local artists for a long time, and we (S41 and S40 mags) are privileged to showcase his work with you.

I caught up with Jon in the Rose and Crown on Chatsworth Road, and we bonded over Henry Cavill, video games, art, education, cartoons, Adventure Time, and all things nerdy.

From a young age, Jon was the kid doodling in his sketchbook in the corner. For him, it was escapism from a school system not designed for brains like ours to develop and flourish.

“As a child I always had a sketchbook with me, and I still do – it’s my safe space. School was a difficult time for me, but I made it to Chesterfield College with my Art GCSE and studied Art & Design. I found my feet there and eventually made it to Leeds Met, where I graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree. I think life is about finding what you want to do, not what you are forced to do,” says Jon.

Wise words from Jon, and ones to live by. It’s clear he has found his purpose and his passion.

I asked Jon about his most memorable work.

“A real high point for me was working on character design for the Netflix show The Midnight Gospel. It was created by American comedian and podcaster Duncan Trussell, who I’m a big fan of.

“I first met Jesse Moynihan, one of the storyboard artists from Adventure Time, at a comic book fair where he had a table. We got chatting, and I showed him my illustrations, telling him how much I admired his work on Adventure Time and how much I enjoyed the podcast he did with Duncan Trussell.

“A few years later, I ran into Jesse again, and we talked more about Adventure Time and Duncan Trussell. Then, a couple of years after that, Jesse messaged me out of the blue: ‘You liked Duncan Trussell, didn’t you? We’re doing a project with him and want you to come and work with us as a character designer.’ I was blown away,” smiles Jon.

Jon has a very distinctive, fun style, and I was keen to know how it came about, and what his influences were – and still are.

“I guess it just developed over time. The artists and shows I love, like Adventure Time, have really shaped my style. I’ve also always been fascinated by ancient Egyptian 2D wall paintings –the shapes, lines and that flat style of drawing. I have always loved cartoons,” says Jon. Naturally, I asked him, “What was your favourite cartoon growing up?”

“Probably Thundercats! Also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but as a grown-up, Adventure Time,” grins Jon.

I asked Jon which project or show he would most like to work on, and he said:

“My own! I would love to create my own TV show, develop the script and artwork. That’s the dream, really,” states Jon.

The Dance Hub

New Life for Hasland Village Hall

Hayley Draper has been running dance classes at Hasland Village Hall, The Dance Hub, for nine years together with classes in Beighton, Sheffield; it’s kept her extremely busy.

Recent council lead changes resulted in classes halting for a while but when Hayley was approached to see if she wanted to manage the building, she put a plan in place and came back to the council with a proposal. This successful bid has secured the future of the building for the next ten years as ‘The Dance Hub’ and as the important community asset it is, a thriving village hall.

I met up with Hayley at the hall to find out what goes on and to see if we can encourage more people to get involved. “The easiest way to describe what we do is Strictly Come Dancing for everyone,” says Hayley. “When Strictly season starts on TV we get an influx of new dancers looking to see what classes are available, it’s an Autumn event so it’s typically rainy and dark outside and people seek out new ways to stay active.

“Our daytime over 50s dance classes are always popular, we pride ourselves on taking in all abilities, you really don’t need to be a dancer to get involved. It’s all about movement and if people are smiling, we like to think we’re getting it right.”

“We do have classes for those with a bit more rhythm and skill but we have a series of classes available that will suit all abilities.” The Dance Hubs Live Band Social Dances on Sundays bring together a live band, dancing, drinks and cakes, and is a fabulous social event for people to while away the time, this place clearly has community at its heart.

“Hayley was keen to point out that it really is as much about the social side of things as the dancing but it’s the opportunity to move, to connect with each other and those around you.

“Our solo Latin class gives people the chance to reclaim an hour a week away from the kids and pressures of home life or it might be a date night for a couple to get to spend some quality time together.”

Hayley moved to Chesterfield in her 20s and has always danced, she married into a dancing family and has danced professionally competing with her partner. Her son and his partner have continued to compete professionally across the world. “We were training the kids since they were three years old and it’s been fabulous to watch their progress,” says Hayley.

In 2004 she took on the family studio in Sheffield and later started up additional classes in Hasland which proved to be a popular move.

“The team here at The Dance Hub have worked with me for many years, most of them came to dance as children and have stayed to become part of the instructing team. They’re a great bunch and they have that ability to be supporting and offer excellent advice without scaring anyone away. You will always find us welcoming and professional.”

Alongside the classes the hall is available to book out as any village hall should be, weddings, birthdays, celebrations, community events and classes, they can accommodate them all at the hall.

Every parent is nervous about their child starting school: will they make friends, what if they don’t like their teacher, what if they hate school dinners, will they be scared? The list goes on. I remember all the above running riot in my head, and more, as I walked my daughter, Florie, to school on her very first day at Westfield Infant School.

Three years later, she has left Westfield as a confident, popular little girl with aboveaverage academic skills and knowledge. But more importantly, she loved her time there and already hopes to go back one day ... as a primary school teacher!

Florie’s journey began in Reception with Mrs Minskip, a wonderful teacher whose kindness, patience, and perseverance made the perfect start to any child's educational adventure. I remember getting to school pick-up early just so I could catch a glimpse of Florie sat on the classroom floor with her friends, listening earnestly as Mrs Minskip read to them at the end of each day. I cherish that memory dearly and hope one day to be stood in the same spot, peeking through the classroom window at my grandchild.

With solid foundations in place, Florie moved into Year 1 under the tutorship of the Mary Poppins-like Mrs Blackbourn; I’m certain she

arrives at school every day via umbrella! If you asked AI to design the perfect Year 1 teacher, it would describe all the attributes, skills, and personality traits that Mrs Blackbourn has in spades. Her nurturing and empathetic approach to teaching fully prepared Florie for her final year at Westfield, where it was time to knuckle down and get ready for Junior School ...

Florie’s final year was spent in Mrs Nash’s classroom. Within weeks, Florie and Mrs Nash had developed an unbreakable bond, she just knew how to get the best out of Florie. Florie started Year 2 as a shy little girl and left as a confident young lady, ready to start Junior School.

Mrs Nash managed to balance a no-nonsense approach to teaching with humour and fun, no mean feat! Thanks to her, every child left with the foundations they needed to hit the ground running at their chosen junior school. Florie truly loved Mrs Nash, and I’m not ashamed to say we both shed a tear on her last day at Westfield. Florie’s three years at Westfield were not only the best years of her life, but they were also the best of mine. She started as a nervous four-year-old, unsure of herself, and left as a confident, happy child who met or exceeded the expected standards in every subject (which is more than I can say for her dad ...). Not once did she say, “I don’t want to go to school today,” which is the biggest compliment any child can pay a school.

Writing about Florie’s journey at Westfield wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Headmaster, Mr Whitham, who, come rain or shine, snow or hail, stood at the school gates welcoming every pupil by name as they crossed the playground into a fully inclusive, inspirational environment led by a socially conscious leader. Thank you.

A huge thank you to the caretakers, lunch makers and supervisors, receptionist, teachers, teaching assistants, and all the support staff who make Westfield such an exceptional school.

A special mention to Mrs Hoddinott, Mrs Green, and Miss Blakeley (TA's), you each hold a special place in Florie’s heart and her future.

'The Christmas Book Flood'

Every family has its own festive traditions. Some of us love wearing matching PJs (no comment), my Granddad Paterson used to stand for the Queen’s (now King’s) speech, Bekah fills a pillow case with presents and places it at the bottom of the kid's beds, ready for Christmas morning. But in Iceland, there’s a tradition so beautifully simple that it has captured imaginations worldwide: Jólabókaflóð, the “Christmas Book Flood.”

On Christmas Eve, Icelandic families exchange books as gifts. The evening isn’t spent rushing through wrapping paper or queueing for the latest gadget, it’s spent curled up together, reading. Imagine it: the fire glowing, mugs of hot chocolate in hand, and each family member lost in a story chosen just for them. It’s a tradition that celebrates not only the joy of giving but the joy of slowing down, of sharing quiet moments, and of letting words weave their magic.

How It Began: The roots of Jólabókaflóð stretch back to the Second World War. With imports restricted, Icelanders turned to books, paper was one of the few things readily available. David Lewis Gedge and his semi-legendary band celebrate a special anniversary live across Ireland and the United Kingdom. The Wedding Present was born in Leeds, in 1985.

Rising from the ashes of a band called The Lost Pandas, The Wedding Present was assembled by David Gedge [singing & guitar] and Keith Gregory [bass], when they enlisted the services of Peter Solowka [guitar] and Shaun Charman [drums].

The band’s first single – ‘Go Out And Get ’Em, Boy!’ – was released in May 1985 and now shares its title with the first volume of David’s autobiography, in which he describes the early days of playing in and around Leeds.

Since 1985, The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles; not bad for a group that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy throughout. From George Best [“an unmitigated delight” (NME)] onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own.
