Womens month in South Africa is an iconic month, a month where women in all their diversities are celebrated. Yes, women ought to be celebrated every month and they are, mostly. However, August is a month that commemorates 1956’s revolt by women, for women. Women on that day united against an oppressive system. It has earned the slogan, “wathinta umfazi, wathinta imbokodo”! Well, for 2022 we say women are human beings and not rocks. They do not deserve pain and should be treated delicately. Women are to unite in the current struggles against Gender Based violence, the pay gap and reproductive rights. Women and all those that identify as women should have autonomy over their bodies and their lives.

Phumzile Lembede is the founder of successful environmental consultancy, Emvelo Quality And Environmental Consultant (Pty) Ltd based in Richards Bay. Driven by passion and determined to succeed in this white male-dominated field, Phumzile has put in the labour and built her firm from the ground from 2015, now one of the leading firms in the region. It is common for one to think they want to exist in a certain field however, once they have been exposed to it they realise that you have different interests. Phumzile took a leap of faith by leaving her chemical engineering field after obtaining her diploma and working for prestigious chemical conglomerates. “I did not enjoy the daily routine nature of my work at the time.

I was not stimulated” says the 2020 Business Women’s Association Finalist for environmental entrepreneur of the year. Fortunately, she landed in the Department of water and sanitation and became exposed to the rich nature of environmental sciences, while in that position she pushed herself, and studied environmental sciences, quality management and honours while practically gaining experience. That light did not die within her even when she had to relocate due to family commitments and went back into chemical engineering to be sustained. There were few employment opportunities in the environmental space. So she just started her own company, “But I had my whole capacity so I ventured into it. There were gaps I could fill and put in my input and assist with climate change issues” says Lembede.

Phumzile Lembede Believes environmental education is the key to changing perceptions.

It was not only a passion project but also a strategic move as there were few black-women-owned environmental consultancies. She acquired her compliance requirements, and registered with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA) and the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). These bodies are vital in the services offered.

Challenges along the way The capital to build a business is a challenge. The business is entirely self-funded and with that, there are challenges. She started with low capital and a paid-up car. Fortunately, she was absorbed into the Black umbrella business development initiative which provided office space and mentoring. Then her capital could attend to other things. In the beginning, the founder often fulfils all of the roles. Although she was a technical expert, the business operations, finances, document compilation, template development she had to teach herself. Research is also important. The sector is governed by certain legislature, laws and regulations, she had to study these in order to ensure relevance and to be able to advise her clients accordingly. Your family needs to support you when you venture into business.

Mentorship Black umbrellas started operating in the area as Emvelo was beginning. We were able to get office space. I gained many pieces of training on branding, speaking, and business development. I was interviewed for the incubator and I also had to present in front of CEOs from big business. They listen to your pitch and allocate a mentor to you, suited for you and your business. This was an essential business network and grooming.

Milestones Phumzile has been nominated in the Women of Stature South African Awards 2023 - Women of Science Category. It was a huge milestone to independently gain my first client and projects. Standard Bank Finalist: Top Women in Science 2021 To purchase our own premises recently

AUGUST ISSUE

Advice Do your research. Invest in attending training and development sessions. It gives people the faith to trust you. Get an institution where you will be able to be mentored. Stay with some business people and plug into a networking platform. This helps with information sharing. You get to understand that you are not alone. Accept that business is not about technical and scientific knowledge. The business requires a system, HR, logistics, marketing and other operations. Develop rigid and established systems and put them in place.

Hlengiwe Sabela – Mrs South Africa 2022 Finalist Not your ordinary beauty queen… Hlengiwe (nickname Ntokozo) is a Retail and Packaging specialist, founder of YGW Fitness Apparel and now one of 30 Mrs South Africa 2022 finalists. We sat down with Clermont-born beauty to get to know the woman behind the brand.

Being a Mrs South Africa finalist Mrs Sabela entered the beauty pageant as an extension and fulfilling my dream of not entering Miss South Africa. With the work, seminars, teachings and fun, her true why became clearer. I quit my job. To concentrate on my true purpose. The journey involves, coaching and “they keep asking us about our WHY? We are taught how to build proposals, how to fundraising, running a business. We also have training on styling and the role of apparel in business meetings and events. We also learn more about beauty products and body upkeep. Networking and empowerment of us.” “Mrs SA is not about the glitz and glam, it is not about how well spoken youa re and how tiny you are or anything else. It is about community. You have to be the kind of person that a community can uphold. To be a model citizen and a role model for youth. Your role is to inspire, assist and help. To be a good influence.”

What is beauty to you?

BIZ

DISCUSSIONS

There are beauty standards in the pageant industry as well as a lot of controversy on what is beauty in the South African context. Unfortunately we are exposed to the terrible side of beauty, light skin, to live in a certain suburb, and to have a certain car. I do not believe that is what beauty is. How good of a person you are.

Understanding who you are, love it. Finding how you can influence others positively. The make up and dresses… is the cherry on top. You are able to interact with people at all levels and respect people, humility is important. Mrs SA doesn’t pressurise you to be a certain size.

FITNESS Apparel - Yes Wena Girl! Yes Wena Guy! Sabela is also the founder of a fitness apparel brand called ‘Yes Wena Gal! Yes Wena Guy!” which aims to bring comfort and strength to gym bugs. As a gym bunny from an early age, she knew what are the needs for fitness apparel. The brand began in 2021 and just aims for people to be comfortable while being active. How good of a person you are. Challenges Social Media. Building a credible, interactive social media campaign was new and different. To get the consumer to opt into the brand. People are fixated on the big name brands. However, the product quality will speak for itself.

Haroldene Tshienda – Helping real stories to be told A woman who comes from the darkest of spaces to a life where she provides light to others. A poet, mom and author of seven books. Haroldene is an all-rounder as an ambassador for SA Women fight back, forming the poetry circle and promoting literature in the community. She is the founder of Tshienda Publications, the hub for aspiring authors. A publishing business that helps self-published authors get their work out there. She calls herself ‘the midwife of books’ because of this.

Her writing journey began in 2008 when she wrote letters to herself and God as part of a healing process. “I felt things would change for me through this process. I had many pains in my life, loss, despair and abuse, I had to relearn to be myself and I wrote about it” says the publisher who had never thought about publishing these works. After encouragement, she published it with a publisher and wasn’t completely happy about the publisher. So she decided to start her own company and has published a book every year since.

“I am an abuse survivor. I am an overcomer.” Haroldene’s life was difficult and her first marriage almost destroyed her as a person. Having suffered mentally, sexually, financially and emotionally abuse, her story is one that inspired many people. Her gift is to be compassionate, to be a healer for many other women. From being homeless, and destitute to trying to commit suicide, God’s grace has rescued her. Her life has a purpose, so now she celebrates the complete turnaround of her life. AUGUST ISSUE

Reading culture To tell one’s story is very important. “My parents died without telling their own stories. My dad was interesting, growing up mixed race in Apartheid South Africa, he was an orphan from Pretoria, his father a Zulu man and his mother was a French woman. He probably had an interesting story, yet we do not know it because we don’t have the book. We would have loved to read about that” she motivates the important of documenting ones lived experiences. “Whether I live or die, I have been given this life and God gave it to me, not for myself but for there to experience and relate and learn from in my books.” Advocating for literacy is important to Haroldene and “it is a legacy I want to leave behind” although people write for different reasons, some for money or fame but she writes to heal others and to archive her own story.

Challenges: The major challenge is Capital and fundraising. When authors have great stories but need money to continue. Unfortunately, we cannot always assist them. We need external funding Authors also have to learn how to market their books and to sell them. We have distributors and a team of people that assist the production and distribution

What is next?

We hope to print some books in braille for blind people and audiobooks for deaf people as well as other disadvantaged people. They also need to be catered for and their stories must be told.

Who inspires you: I am inspired by my parents. They raised us in such a way that we were the priority of our family. My father was supportive of all of my ventures and ideas. If I wanted to make jam, my father would plant strawberries for me. If I wanted to make clothes for dolls, then my father would buy me a sewing machine.
