FROM CHEMISTRY TO COUTURE: THE JOURNEY OF PRETTY HADEBE AND PRETTIE CREATIONS

Pretty Hadebe, a fashion designer based in Richards Bay, is the visionary founder behind Prettie Creations, a female clothing brand specializing in plus-size Haute Couture.

Born in Mpumalanga Witbank and raised by her maternal grandparents in Limpopo, Hadebe's passion for fashion blossomed in the nurturing environment of her childhood home. Despite pursuing studies in Chemistry at the Vaal University of Technology and later Environmental Science with UNISA, her love for fashion never altered.

The inception of Prettie Creations took basis during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown when Hadebe having just given birth struggled to find stylish plus-size clothing online Frustrated by the lack of options in physical stores as well, she identified a gap in the market and conceived the idea of addressing the challenges faced by plussize women during their shopping experiences.

Internationally inspired by Alexandre Vauthier's unique detailing style and colour themes, particularly black and gold, Hadebe also admires local designer Londeka Buthelezi Ndaba of Malondié for her avant-garde touch in creating elegant garments

Hadebe credits her sister-in-law, Thembelihle Hlubi as a role model, drawing inspiration from her resilience in the face of life's hardships. Family, particularly her supportive husband and children, serves as her driving force to prove that with determination and hard work, nothing is impossible.

BIZDiscussions|SpecialIssue2024 Page 15

Leaving the corporate world to pursue a fashion design qualification marked a significant milestone for Hadebe, who initially worked with a CMT to mass-produce clothing items. Her passion for fashion dates back to childhood, as she fondly recalls fiddling with her grandmother's sewing machine.

“It might sound cliché, but I have always known that fashion was the one for me, a calling. I knew that at the age of 8 whenever I would try to fiddle with my grandmother’s sewing machine (singer), and closely observed her whenever she sewed” explained Hlengiwe.

Selected as a participant in the Emerging Designer Incubation program, Hadebe acknowledges the importance of coaches and mentors in helping her grow Prettie Creations. She emphasizes the challenges of starting a business and encourages budding entrepreneurs to equip themselves with the right knowledge and skills while surrounding themselves with inspiring individuals.

Despite sacrificing personal finances for the initial investment in Prettie Creations, Hadebe remains optimistic about the future. She leverages social media to access a diverse market and envisions Prettie Creations becoming a global brand specializing in both tailoring and CMT services.

Beyond garment creation, Hadebe does sketching and designing fashion-related boards such as storyboards and mood boards. As she continues to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship, Hadebe remains persistent in her belief that the journey, though not smooth, is ultimately worth the effort.
