Simthande grew up in a Christian home with his parents and his seven siblings. His love for the arts only arose with the English subject. Subtly Nkandla born comedian, internet personality and radio presenter Simthande Myeza is the face behind the hilarious face of MakaThang’thini. As a young extrovert and 7th born child in the Myeza family, there were signs of his being a performer from an early age. It is no surprise that he has advanced so successfully in the media industry. enjoying the literature component of the subject caught his attention although his studies were fixed on the STEM path. He matriculated in 2014 and left to pursue his dreams in Durban.

Becoming a radio personality He began a course in Journalism at the Durban University of Technology because he wanted to be in media, although there was little understanding of ‘media industry’ but he knew his passion and what he liked, which was radio. The creative mind in him went to audition for Radio DUT and was successful and popular as a radio personality. Due to funding, he was unable to complete his studies however, his experience at Radio DUT he was able to enter Radio Khwezi. His professionalism and talent afforded him some part-time work opportunities to fill in for some staff members during December at Radio Khwezi, his tasks were to read the news and general work in the newsroom.
Fortunately for him, someone was leaving the station, and he was able to fill in that position. From the newsroom to hosting a breakfast show and later in the years hosting the drive time show. This is how social media began to take shape in his life.
Becoming a radio personality MakaThang’thin began unexpectedly. He posted uMakaTha, middle aged rural woman with ibovu on her face and a pinafore talking on a controversial topic at the time, and there was a large response. Trough being sarcastic and ‘comical’, she would trend for days especially during lock down. The first platform was Facebook then soon to Tiktok and now she exists on YouTube as well.
Becoming a stand-up comedian The attention from the online posts became overwhelming. What is special about makaThangthini is that they do not beat about the bush, and she has real responses on real matters in the country. Therefore, she is the voice of reason for many while also being comical. Simthande then became busy with being called into interviews and being quoted by major publications.
It was at that point that veteran comedian Sifiso Nene invited him into a stand-up comedy show. This was a new and interesting journey for Simthande who did not realise that he could make a living from being funny. He soon quit Radio Khwezi, as his schedule no longer allowed him to be committed to one place.

Who helped you? Simthande would like to thank two people who were instrumental in his establishment as a full time media personality. Thenjiwe Comedy who is also a local artist, was able to give guidance and mentored him into running comedy as business. She groomed him while teaching him the tricks of the trade and how to generate good income. As a result, Simthande has a growing following on all of his platforms. Sifiso Nene was the one who spotted MakaThan’thini and brought him out of his shell and onto the stage. He assisted with training for live performances and how to convert his online persona to a live stand up show.
Highlights along the way To find success on stage was a way to see that I am versatile and have Youtube success which is one of the more difficult platforms to gain success. To form part of certain TV productions and to learn directly from industry veterans. People out there call me “maka thangthini” and in public. That is also an affirmation that she is relevant and that Simthande’s work is cross cutting all age. Everyone loves MakaTha The family has been supportive through the transitions from leaving school for radio and leaving radio for the comedy. His mother was unsure, however once she saw the gogs and the income and then realised that there was more potential.
Thank you He wants to thank all of his followers who made him and have supported him on every platforms very the years. Thank you for the shares and your positive responses. I would be no where without my people. Remember that education is important. Take it seriously and do more and invest in yourself and your craft.

Automotive Pros is a vehicle business that specialises in spray painting and panel beating. The founder is Princess Mukhari who prides herself in this nontraditional business and hopes to make her fathers dream come true. The Randfontein-based business is a qualified service centre, and offer windscreen and window services as well as do mechanical and electrical repairs in addition to the spray painting and panel beating. Her fathers dream of a panel shop, which sadly did not succeed at first has now come true with Princess, “my motive was to make my father’s dream come true he had a panel shop but it couldn’t succeed so after I got the skills and qualified I saw it fit to open a panel shop to honour him”. This business is a legacy business and we cannot wait to see it grow from strength to strength.

Some wins along the way… The business has been able to make some outstanding accomplishments and have reached some tough goals. Princess aims to create more job opportunities as the current rate of unemployment is so high. Automotive Pros was featured on national TV and other media coverage has been good to show recognition of her hard work Some of the toughest jobs are on written off cars, Princess has been able to recover some for her clients, leaving them happy afterwards. We market through social media and it’s been working wonders for us.
Advice for upcoming mechanics: “I would say stay positive and let your work speak for you it won’t be easy but with passion, dedication and self-belief you will make it” Princess advises, “every business has its ups and downs. Sometimes we get jobs sometimes we don’t. Many times we have to follow up hard on payments in order to pay salaries even if things are tough.”

NoeleenSaid says come back to your whole self We were introduced to Noeleen Ngwenya as the brains behind Ayana Magazine, which was a digital women’s magazine, in 2017. It tackled all issues from mental health, beauty, body politics and overall healing from internal and external traumas. The magazine extended into events and panel discussions, with the spirit of building self. This was also a safe space for many, including Noeleen herself who discovered her passion for self-development and mental health, as she soared through her early twenties. Since then, she has made it her life’s mission to inspire others to heal and grow in self-love and acceptance, ‘My mission’ is to remind people that they are enough. You need to be compassionate, to represent your inner attention on what you are and feel’ says Noeleen. Since then, she has published two best-selling poetry anthologies ‘Things I Never Said To Myself’ and ‘This Time You Return To Yourself’ which people genuinely needed. The 27 year author highlights that ‘the books are gifts to herself and every other person who would like to heal and build a meaningful relationship with themselves’. It is no surprise that she is a best-selling author with a history in the industry. She says she has been a writer and has been writing since school, short stories and articles.

Becoming NoeleenSaid This, and the successful digital marketing business she has run since 2015 assisting businesses grow their reach. She is currently studying towards a marketing qualification now to continue her effectiveness as a digital marketer. It is commendable. The current success is not by chance, it has taken hard work, research and some online courses and simply putting things into practice. As a writer, “I am not a psychologist or anything, I’m just an emotional and sensitive person” say Hammaskral born Noeleen, “I wrote the book to validate what I see in people’.
Growing as NoeleenSaid Service Providers - Finding some service providers like printers, is not easy. You have to do your own due-diligence. A reliable printing company is important for the quality of the book. I didn’t have an editor; I use my own skills. I don’t mind doing for the rest of my life. Many people in self-publishing are struggling with sales and marketing. You need to have a marketing strategy. Generating sales is difficult for anyone. Funds are a challenge as you carry the entire cost of production. From the book cover to layout, to printing, and editing. Piracy is a major challenge. This impacts the authors income as PDFs being sent around without the authors knowledge or their revenue.

Quality bread around the corner with Gemisquare Bakeries Germisquare Bakeries is a black womanowned township-based bakery specialising in bread. The bread is delicious, freshly baked and is delivered all over tuck shops in Umlazi. Founded in 2014 by Hlengiwe Shandu, the uMlazi-born baker saw a gap and filled it. Not only supplying the freshest bread in Umlazi but also offering bread baking classes and other confectioneries. With

in
Operations
Management (BTech Durban University of Technology), Hlengiwe is well-equipped to run this business. Her business began with cakes and naturally ventured into the bread business. This was fuelled by COVID-19’s impact on people’s livelihoods and many could not afford basic needs. Therefore, her bread became an easy solution for those in need. Not knowing it would grow and expand to this great level. page|

Joys along the way MaShandu expresses her deep gratitude for being able to contribute meaningfully to her community in the township. People in uMlazi are nourished through her labour and that is a big milestone.
This has extended further to other communities through one Foundation’s project that required 1,000 loaves of bread that would be distributed to underprivileged and poverty stricken families. This was a significant milestone for her as a black woman in business but also for the community at large.

The growth of this bakery has been organic and it continues to grow beyond imagination. For people who want to venture into this kind of business, her advice is: ‘The time to start is NOW, there will ever be a perfect time. Funding will find you along the way and funders do not fund dreams, they fund operating businesses”. Capital and funding remains a challenge for SMME’s in South Africa and Gemisquare is no exception. With six people employed (youth from the community) and potential growth, more capital is required. They use social media, largely to market themselves and word of mouth.

Style is a state of mind. Even if your situation makes it out of your reach, you can push yourself to afford the item. Do not allow yourself to slack on yourself. “Abantu abathanda iStayela are our target market” says Ndima. His belief is, “No matter where you are you can look good. The clothes have the power to alter your mood. For example, you feel different when you wear a suit vs when you wear a tracksuit”.
Building Boys of Soweto The inception of boys of Soweto was on the shoulders of four gents who believed in style and created a blog. At this point, there was no apparel only blog pieces as early as in 2011. They sought different philosophical ways to extend the fashion work and change peoples lives about fashion, not as clothes but as a lifestyle and a livelihood for many. “We enjoyed expressing ourselves through fashion” says passionate Vusimuzi, “fashion is more that work”. His passion has carried him through Boys of Soweto from its inception. Getting the business up from the ground was a challenge and as the other partners fell off, he persevered through. page|

Concurrently Vusimuzi started working as a professional stylist and Suits by Bob the stylist was birthed. This built his brand and would be a styling consultant through Boys of Soweto which was not creating any product. In 2020 he revisited the dream as it was always in his heart and began creating products and apparel. He backed it up with personal funds and invested into it.

There have been people who assisted the journey and helped groom him. Jody from Limpost was one significant person who welcomed Vusimuzi into the media industry through the world of adverts. During this period, I got exposed to styling international gigs. Soon he became a senior stylist. When there were no pressing gigs, he would work on Boys of Soweto.
The growth of Boys of Soweto has grown in leaps and bounds since then and continues to grow. Real people are using the brand, they are buying it. Often people travel long distances to get the apparel and famous personalities often make purchases organically. It has been a pleasure to experience for the international stylist.
Becoming Bob the Stylist The style is a natural gift for Ndima who says “I come from a family of stylists” who had stylish parents and family members growing up. Stylists were innate in the home and it was a priority. Ndima mentions that “my mother sold vegetables but I never wore an inferior product because she prioritised style and quality”. As a child he knew he had style and always looked forward to civvies day at school so that he can show off his style. With this gut intuition and talent, he became a multifaceted stylist today. With no formal training but passion, resilience and hard work he preserved through.

Boys today-Men tomorrow He always runs an initiative called Boys today – Men tomorrow which has run over three years. In a world where there is extensive drug use and crime, it is important to see life through a different lens. The goal is to bring together boys from SOWETO, gather them and expose them to a different type of life. Through activities like hiking and outdoor activities, we aim to fuse passion with purpose. This project aims to heal the inner child, just like I have a boy in me who has needs. The initiative is important because it deals with the development of an inferior complex in young boys and men. We joke and have speakers on certain topics. It also aims to expose them to the world of creativity as I was not catered for as a child and my level of creativity was not tapped into. It took me decades to realise my art and we wish for them to realise their talents quicker and explore their diversity.

Becoming Dr Mark Moodley He obtained his MBChB degree in 2012 with UKZN and thereafter completed 24 months of internship training at RK Khan Hospital. He completed 12 months of community service at Dr Harry Surtie Hospital in paediatrics. He completed his Diploma in Child Health during his community service time with the College of Medicine SA. He achieved his Fellowship in Paediatrics in 2021. He obtained his Masters in Paediatrics, his research was on infections and their impact on newborns. He thereafter worked as a medical officer in the department of Paediatrics in Upington, Northern Cape.

Dr Moodley has advocated for hundreds of children during his work at rural areas. His interests include Neonatology, Infectious diseases, asthma, allergy, and behavioural disorders such as Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) ADHD

Symptoms must persist for at least 6 months, and they must cause a dysfunction in at least two different places, for example in school and at home. A structured interview with the parents regarding the child’s behaviour is very important for a diagnosis as ADHD can be misdiagnosed for other medical disorders. Children with uncontrolled chronic disorders like allergy, poor sleep and asthma can present with ADHD like symptoms. It is important to rule out these conditions. Treatment for ADHD is mainly with therapy and medications like stimulants. Adherence and commitment to treatment may lead to better outcomes in the child with ADHD.
Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism is a developmental disorder relating to communicating and interacting socially. These children do not meet their speech milestones and struggle to make eye contact. They do not point when they want something and may struggle with other nonverbal gestures. They struggle to maintain relationships. They may repeat what you say and may form new words. No two autistic children are the same. These children also have restrictive and repetitive habits. They may play with toys inappropriately and find it difficult to imitate play. They love to line up their toys and may find it difficult to share their belongings. They may turn toy cars upside down and obsessively run the wheels. They can be fascinated by spinning fans. Autistic children need to self-stimulate themselves, they may walk around in circles, bang their heads, flap their hands and toewalk in infancy years. Sensory issues for e.g. over stimulation to sound are common findings in these children. They love routine and struggle when routines are changed. They may have meltdowns when they are exposed to a new environment. Autism is not a disability; children can be high-functioning but may be on the spectrum. Some children may need substantial support to treat their symptoms. Autism is not curable, but it is treatable. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the outcomes.

Nandi herself has a passion for bringing joy and entertainment her passion began at the early age of 12 years. On a school trip to Carnival City which is a fun fair with endless games and fun. The rural Nandi was fascinated and flabbergasted but that initial feeling carried right through to now running Funworld. She was inspired by them and began the company in 2012 and it has grown in leaps and bounds ever since. Nandi has been a beacon of hope for over 10 years, identifying previously disadvantaged communities and placing her events in those areas. This helps boost the morale of locals and also increase the areas economy. “I know how difficult life can be for people in rural communities and how unequal of society is” says Nandi who uses her platform to fuel her passion to educate these communities to empower themselves for a better future. She believes that living sustainably is the key to success for all.

Growing Funworld The business has survived for over 10 years and it has some achievements and experienced some challenges as well. Fortunately, Funworld has been able to employ 20 people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, affording them a fair chance at life and provision for their families. On the event days, there will be additional part time staff from the area.
Challenges As an outdoor business, it’s a seasonal company functioning majorly in spring and summer. Capital remains a constraint, the entertainment business is difficult to finance as it is people dependent. You never know how many people will come to the event, sometimes less than expected and many times the venue is overflowing. There is no way to be sure. “We sleep in the car sometimes. We camp at the stadium because it does not always make sense to book hotels for the staff” informs Nandi. Often people underestimate the role of commitment and passion. Towns are also not the same, as well as venues. We may get on site and discover something different that what we saw on Google. So we must be agile and solution driven. “Our primary aim is delivering the concept. Then our job is done” says Mlala.
