STOP SUFFERING FROM

DRY EYE

B R E A K T H RO U G H T H E RA P I E S I N A N N A P O L I S By Dr. Edward Trudo, Jr., Chesapeake Eye Care & Laser Center Dry Eye is a painful condition that causes itching, burning, redness, sensitivity to light, and tearing. Do not take Dry Eye lightly—it can prevent you from spending time with loved ones, working and enjoying life. What’s more, it can harm the eye’s surface (cornea) and cause cell damage and your vision may deteriorate. To stop the dangerous cycle, it is critical to seek treatment immediately. Dry Eye covers a broad spectrum of conditions and, if the exact cause is not properly identified, is often tricky to diagnose and treat. At Chesapeake Eye Care and Laser Center, we have the most advanced technology to identify the root cause and effectively treat chronic Dry Eye. Our special LipiView® technology makes it possible to identify which form of Dry Eye a patient is experiencing. Recently, we had a patient travel from Harrisonburg. Although she had been seen by numerous physicians, her Dry Eye had progressed so far that she could barely open her eyes. This was one of our more complex cases. The patient was suffering from allergies, lack of tear production (Aqueous Deficient) and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). With MGD, the cornea could easily break down, much like chapped hands, and then become susceptible to infection. Fortunately, we successfully treated her Dry Eye with a multi-therapeutic approach and her comfort level was restored.

We use innovative treatments such as PROKERA®, which uses amniotic membrane tissue to heal damaged eye surfaces. PROKERA® is a biologic corneal bandage similar to a large contact lens. The lens is placed on the eye for only a few days. Once removed the patient will experience symptom relief and the cornea will be restored to a healthy state. The PROKERA® family of products are the only FDA cleared therapeutic devices that reduce inflammation and simultaneously promote regenerated healing of the ocular surface. Another breakthrough treatment that draws on special technology is LipiFlow®, which treats MGD using a Thermal Pulsation System. Warm heat is applied to the inside of the eyelid near the blocked glands; simultaneously a gentle massage is applied to the outside of the eyelid. This combination of heat and applied pressure opens the Meibomian Glands, allowing them to secrete the blocked oil and begin to heal. These advancements are exciting—they allow us to take a multifaceted approach to effectively treat Dry Eye. We have the resources and technology to offer patients a comprehensive treatment plan that encompasses traditional and advanced options to manage this painful chronic condition so you can enjoy life to its very fullest.
