Describing

a home as “traditional” leaves a lot of room for interpretation. In the case of a home recently designed by Anthony “Ankie” Barnes, principal of BarnesVanze Architects, tradition played a big role in the design—but it’s a home with a distinct character of its own. “People have different interpretations of ‘traditional’ because, I think, so many of the traditional styles of architecture in America have been borrowed and tweaked from European examples,” he says, citing Georgian- and Tudor-style homes as specific instances of what people imagine traditional to be. “I’d say traditional architecture is one that is respectful of the lessons of the past and the traditions of architecture that have come before us.” In the case of this project? “This is clearly a colonial house,” he says, but he emphasizes that the brick colonial was “planned and executed for the lifestyle of a modern young family.”

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 35

A contemporary art piece brings an element of boldness to the traditional library.

Thanks to its slight asymmetry, it’s a house that makes a strong first impression— one that doesn’t feel too conventional or too predictable. Its brickwork uses reclaimed brick, each one with its own unique color and patina—some are red, some salmon, others orange, and still others brown. Instead of slate shingles, the roof is of natural cedar wood, which takes on a weathered look with time. “These materials are a bit softer than your classic one-color-brick and perhaps slate, which would be a more typical palette for a house,” Barnes says, explaining that the softer look makes a home more approachable. Inside, the front door opens into a cozy entryway with a low ceiling—a perfect place for greeting guests. “The slightly smaller space allows for a little intimacy in that initial greeting,” Barnes explains. Only a few steps farther in, the space opens to a larger entry hall with a curved staircase leading upstairs. “This was a great design opportunity for elegance and drama,” Barnes says of the space. Subtle choices such as this—balancing the intimate with the elegant—are used throughout the house and keep it from feeling overwhelming. Barnes describes it as “quietly a big house,” meaning that even though the house is indeed big, it’s scaled in a manageable way with a lot of “practical thought behind the layout.” One way the house defies expectations is in its use of double windows and French doors along the back, which let in plenty of natural light—something modern homeowners seek. A traditional colonial, Barnes explains, would have been built before the age of steel beams to reinforce the home and, as such, relied on masonry to hold them up, so too many windows would have been impractical. This design pays tribute to that by limiting the glass on the front façade but meeting the modern need for light with plenty of glasswork around back. As Barnes puts it, “There’s enough walls here for these façades to look elegant.” This balance of tradition with touches of modernity also appears in the interior design. Jennifer Tonkel of Kemble Interiors describes the homeowners as “definitely traditionalists,” but she helped them open up to creative touches in each room. “We did a really good job of pushing those boundaries a little bit, getting them to step outside their comfort zone,” she says. One of her favorite examples is what she and Barnes refer to sometimes as the library and other times as the den: the single-story hipped-roof room off to the side that gives the exterior its distinctive asymmetry. Inside, slate blue walls and velvet sofas serve as the more traditional elements against a bold painting of a woman’s silhouette by British artist Natasha Law. “It was a really traditional library, but we anchored it with a gorgeous contemporary art piece,” Tonkel says. “You walk in there, and it’s a showstopper. It draws you into the room.” Other elements, such as the orange throw pillow and the red lamp, give more pops of boldness.

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 37

The use of brass in the kitchen and butler’s pantry gives consistency.

Another favorite room Tonkel loves is the formal dining room, with its dark green walls and the tortoiseshell wallpaper on the ceiling. Brass elements, such as the mirror over the fireplace and the sconces on the wall, add warmth and recall other brass elements used in the kitchen and in the butler’s pantry that connects the two rooms. The dining room is another aspect of the house that Barnes loves as well, noting that there’s something special about having these designated spaces, especially when many modern homes are opting to forgo dining rooms. “Sometimes space is at a premium; people have smaller city lots, and they’re making as much use of the space as possible. But I love it when you can support a formal dining room like this,” he says. “There’s something about the contract of sitting down at a table, around a table with other people, where someone has gone to the trouble to prepare an honest meal. That really makes it feel like it’s a celebration, makes you feel welcome.” Ultimately, it’s this balance—tradition with creativity or formality with casualness—that makes the house such a success. Barnes explains that although the house emphasizes elegance and formality in many of its prominent rooms, there are plenty of casual spaces throughout the house where members of a busy family can feel at home. “It’s so important in creating a family home where people can be comfortable—a place that’s warm and inviting,” he says.

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 39

Marion Oxford Dearth, of Marion Dearth Landscape, designed the landscape to compliment the L-shaped home. These homeowners, whose children are into sports, devoted a large section of the lawn to an ice hockey rink. Her challenge was accommodating this structure without making the outside look like a sports field. At the back of the house, one steps down to the pool area. To enhance the home’s elegant European-style feel, Dearth incorporated green velvet boxwoods, symmetrically placed, which are both evergreen and deer-resistant. Dearth says that “transition from the house to the garden is key,” and she values “as many ways out to the garden as you can get.” This transition is notable in the diamond-shaped flagstone patio that echoes the diamond shape of the interior flooring. The French doors allow multiple exits to access the “garden rooms” at the back of the home, where she planted evergreens and annuals. In all these ways, no matter what comes to mind when you think of traditional architecture or interior design, Barnes, Tonkel, and Dearth have successfully reinterpreted “traditional” for a contemporary family, incorporating creativity, character, and comfort. TABLE TOP

46

ANNAPOLIS HOME

How to do it

Annapolis Home Magazine invited Jennifer “Jenn” Baker to set a holiday table for us. The inspired owner of Welcome Home, a specialty kitchen and table store at 64 State Circle, Jenn shares that she is a designer by passion, not education. In fact, she admits, “A lot of electrical tape was used in the creation of the florals!” During our photo shoot on the State House lawn, she explained that because she has a form of muscular dystrophy, she has used a wheelchair for over 20 years. But she finds that operating a business from a wheelchair has certain advantages and, in fact, inspires her unusual design approach. First, she assembles a “scene” on the floor to gain a top-down view. Then, she moves the setting to the table and looks directly across. These are great techniques we can all try. No wheelchair necessary! In the following Q&A, Jenn shares the sources of her inspiration.

1 2 3 4

AH: What is your secret to a beautiful table? My overall approach is to create something beautiful when you look across a room but something captivating when you sit down at the table. I believe great design is all in the details. You’ll see that in the tiny touches of color, the rich textures, and the mixed materials. AH: What is at the heart of your creation? We chose modern table linens as the backdrop for more traditional florals and tableware pieces. We added a touch of nostalgia with vintage ornaments from our family collection. For the table linens, we selected the 190-year-old French heritage brand Garnier-Thiebaut. We love the soft wisps of the ferns in greys, greens, and touches of lilac and plum dripping over the edge of the table and the modern grey sketch border. AH: How did you choose your colors and flowers? Given the transitional nature of our table linen choice, we opted for a simple color palette for our florals: red and white. Our greens were cut from our home on the Eastern Shore and feature evergreens and magnolia. The large format of the lilies and the simple pop of tonal reds added by the mums are a modern expression and help to convey the essence of holidays when paired with the table linens. The flowers are lilies, mums, and baby’s breath, all from Acme Markets. For the garland extending the length of the table, I secured branches and leaves using paper clips and electrical tape. AH: Tell us about textures and mixed materials. For tablescape accents, we opted for traditional pewter pinecone salt & pepper shakers and pewter feather napkin rings. Our taper candles in rubbed gold metal, alongside green tree stumps in ceramic, added a winter touch. Our candlesticks were made by our favorite craft candle maker, who uses fallen birch logs to add a touch of texture. Tableware is by Casafina of Portugal. I have a fun fact to share. The yellow pattern is our actual personal dinnerware.

See something you love from our photo shoot? Do not worry. Most items are from Jenn’s shops in Annapolis and Chestertown. Keep in mind that Welcome Home is the sister store of Chester River Wine & Cheese Company in Chestertown, Maryland, operated by her husband, John Laucik. Here, you will find fine wines, cheeses, and craft varietals to serve your family and guests. Tostones for the Holidays

While we love our holiday turkey and feast of the seven fishes, it is fun to have on hand a dish that will surprise your guests. This recipe is for a tostone made with plantain and slaw, bursting with tropical flavors. AREPA is a beautiful new cookbook featuring the food of Venezuela, written and photographed by restaurateur Irena Stein, co-owner of Alma Cocina Latina.

Tostones:

2 unripe green plantains, peeled Vegetable oil for frying

Mango Coleslaw:

1 large white cabbage 1 mango, cut into matchsticks 1 bunch coriander, finely chopped 1 bunch of chives, finely chopped

Dressing:

1/4 cup passion fruit purée 1/4 cup mango purée 1/4 cup chili lime powder 1/2 tbsp. Old Bay 1/4 tsp. ground coriander 2 tbsp. sesame oil 6 cups mayonnaise Blitz all of the ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Avocado salsa:

1 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 small avocados, peeled and pitted 4 oz. white onion 3 1/2 oz. green bell pepper 1 garlic clove 3 tbsp. olive oil 3 tbsp. salt 2 bunches cilantro Blitz all of the ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Garnishes:

Grated Cotija cheese Microgreens or cilantro leaves

Alma Cocina Latina 1701 N Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21201 667.212.4273 almacocinalatina.com

AREPA is published by Ryland Peters & Small Recipe Credit: David Zamudio Photo Credit: Irena Stein

For the Tostones:

Slice plantain into thin rounds. Fry them halfway in enough hot oil to cover. Remove the plaintain from the oil and pound to flatten slightly. Return them to the hot oil and continue to cook until golden. Drain on paper towels.

For the Coleslaw:

Using a mandoline, cut the cabbage into thin, evenly-sized slices. Combine with all of the other ingredients in a bowl. Pour the dressing over the slaw and mix until everything is fully coated. You may not need to use all of the dressing; just use enough to avoid sogginess.

To serve:

Place the tostones on a platter. Add spoonfuls of the coleslaw on top of each tostone. Finish with a teaspoon of avocado salsa and a little grated Cotija cheese. Garnish with microgreens or cilantro leaves. 48

ON CATTAIL CREEK BY DYLAN ROCHE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEAK VISUALS

Change happens. That was a fact on the minds of architect Stephanie Cook and builder PJ Mueller as they worked on a home at the end of a peninsula where the Magothy River meets Cattail Creek. The project involved taking down the one-story house that had belonged to the owner’s family for generations and replacing it with a completely new one suited to the needs of a 21st-century family—a home that could accommodate the owners for a long time through different stages of life. Functional and comfortable, this house was built for the needs of a 21st-century family

“ Everyone who has waterfront property today wishes they could have a one-room-deep, multiple-room house. That’s always the goal—as much waterfront view as possible.” - Stephanie Cook, Architect

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 55

“Their goal from day one was ‘a house that we are comfortable in,’” explains Cook, senior architect with Speight Studio Architects, Inc. “And yes, we want it to be stunning, but at the end of the day, it has to be a home that’s comfortable to raise their family in.” The first major change meant maximizing the water view of the property. The lot boasts views of the water from both the front and the back yard, so ensuring each room had a window that looked out over the river or the creek shouldn’t have been hard. But this did require one major adjustment. The original house sat at an angle where most of the sightlines to the water crossed a neighbor’s property. All it would take would be for a neighbor to plant a few trees or put up a fence to block that breathtaking view. Cook points out that homeowners today have “a very different perspective on, a much greater appreciation of ” waterfront property than past generations did. “Everyone who has waterfront

property today wishes they could have a oneroom-deep, multiple-room house. That’s always the goal—as much waterfront view as possible,” she says. “And in this case, they actually have water view on both sides.” All it took to maximize this view was to rotate the footprint of the house about 45 degrees so that every room in the house looked directly onto the water. The architectural design, which could be described as a modified shingle-style structure, includes many elements that pay tribute to the idea of a waterfront cottage, such as long gables with dormers. But on a much grander scale, the design is functional for a busy, social, growing family—all without going too big. “The house was really set up for family life but then transitioning into a place where you want to entertain and have people over,” says Mueller, president of Mueller Homes. “It speaks to family and friends. It’s functional and comfortable.”

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 57

The living room’s built-in shelves provide space for décor.

At about 5,000 square feet of total living space, the first floor is dominated by a primary open living space that looks out over the backyard and the creek beyond. Shiplap and millwork give the home character without ever being overpowering—“just enough to impress,” as Mueller says. He notes that all the millwork in the house was installed by his team of on-staff carpenters, not contracted out. The choice of materials throughout the house calls back to the cottage-like elements Cook incorporated into the architecture. “Hardie plank and natural stone veneer really complement the design Stephanie created with the client,” Mueller says. “We were able to amplify that with the selection of material and even the colors: the darker bronze windows with the cream-colored siding and the hints of the brown and the gray in the stones on the fireplace.” The choice of French white oak flooring throughout and quartz countertops in the kitchen give the home a sense of refinement, as do the kitchen’s solid maple cabinets installed by Kitchen Encounters. Kalyn Henderson, the in-house client concierge of Mueller Homes, worked with the homeowners on the interior design, coordinating finishes throughout the design.

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 59

Dark bronze windows contrast nicely with the light neutral colors of the walls and textiles.

The home has no shortage of practical space. Just off to the side of the primary living space on the first floor, a game room steps out into a screened-in porch for year-round function, which, in turn, leads out to a patio configured for entertaining. A spare room on the first floor on the other side of the house can be adapted for the family’s needs, says Cook. “It’s a room that will hopefully grow with the family,” she says. “While the kids are small, it’s a great playroom because it’s right off the kitchen. Eventually, it might be a home office or a study, and someday, it’s certainly capable of being a bedroom. It allows them to expand their time in the property.” Indeed, change does happen—children grow into teenagers, or trees grow on a neighboring property, blocking views of the water. Whatever changes the future holds, Cook and Mueller created this home to accommodate this growing family. It’s a home that will remain functional, practical, welcoming, beautiful, and comfortable for years—and generations—to come. Can

one truly return home? In his 20th-century classic You Can’t Go Home Again, Thomas Wolfe says absolutely not. However, Bon Jovi, in his song “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?” argues that you can, for here is where your core identity has been formed. Carolyn Callahan Keller and her husband Mark agree with Bon Jovi’s side of the argument. By 2019, both of Carolyn’s parents had died, leaving behind their beloved home in Cove Creek Club on the Eastern Shore, a 6,000-square-foot rancher tucked into the verdant swells of a golf green on two acres of pristine waterfront. When she and Mark decided to buy the home, it was a joyous occasion. “This was the place everybody came. When we thought about selling it, it was sad. When I decided to buy it, everyone was thrilled,” she recalls.

Some furnishings are from the Kellers’ Miami Beach mansion, such as two elegant glass and gold tables by furniture designer Mark Dawson and a grand piano.

BEFORE

Contemporary art, much of it acquired at Art Basel in Miami, explodes with color, charging the interior with joy.

At the time, Carolyn and Mark lived in Miami Beach, Florida, in a 9,500-square-foot oceanfront mansion filled with modern furnishings and contemporary art. At first, they planned to live in Cove Creek part-time, but after covid, they changed their minds. Miami had become “manic,” says Carolyn. On the Eastern Shore, she could “cross the Bay Bridge and exhale” and live minutes from her sister, daughter, and grandchildren. Living full-time at Cove Creek seemed the perfect antidote to “Ferraris and fancy restaurants,” notes Mark. Initially, Carolyn told Mark that the house would be fine “as is.” However, he had a different plan. He had to deal with a family ghost: Carolyn’s father, Daniel J. Callahan III, former chairman of American Security Bank. The protective patriarch had never been fond of the freewheeling investment entrepreneur who showed up and married his daughter, recalls Mark. He told Carolyn, “I have to make this my home. I don’t want to wake up and hear him in my dreams saying, ‘What are you doing in my house? I never liked you anyway.’ ” Psychologically, Mark needed a fresh start. So, they turned to Lundberg Builders for an extensive remodel. General manager Eamon Seidel explains that they rebuilt the home on the same footprint but changed its configuration, adding 500 feet and relocating the primary bedroom to the northeast wing. Many new sustainable materials were used, including Hardie siding,

Timber Tech decking, and Cambria countertops in the kitchen. Loewen windows replaced outdated sliding glass doors. What made the biggest difference, says Seidel, was removing all interior walls and beams and lifting the ceilings—some of which rise as high as 18 feet. The house looks almost reborn but with a Miami personality: dark floors, mahogany walls, and heavy beams have been replaced by white walls, sleek furnishings, and air. The couple’s contemporary art collection from their Miami home drives the interior design. Carolyn painted walls and ceilings in warm whites to better highlight the bold mix of contemporary paintings, prints, and sculptures that charge the atmosphere with joy. Even the floors are white porcelain, which resembles white oak but is more durable. “We definitely brought back some of our Miami vibe, our Florida vibe. But it is still very soft; the art is fun. My house makes me smile; it makes me happy. There is not any room that is gloomy when you go in... Every room is bright,” says Carolyn.

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 87

Along with the art, a grand piano and designer furnishings from Miami draw the eye. These include two glass tables with gold accents by Michael Dawson, a yellow Roberto Cavalli chair, and two pink chairs in the primary bedroom by Ligne Roset. The “Big Ass Fan” (yes, that is its name) is composed of some mixed metals. “It is a little bit of drama, something to make you look at the ceiling,” says Carolyn. This home’s interior lighting makes this home especially unique. There are very few overhead fixtures. Instead, recessed lighting runs the length of the house and is subtly reflected by white floors, ceilings, and walls. With surround sound, the ambiance is spa-like. As notes of classical music sift through the air, visitors may find themselves adrift in a cloud of white, with gleaming floors below and creamy ceilings that seem to vanish overhead. In this sea of calm, Mark, a master chef and sommelier, cooks and entertains in the large double kitchen. Carolyn practices yoga, hosts family, and operates Ebeauty Community, a nonprofit she founded in 2010. Its mission is to provide free wigs to cancer patients, with over 100,000 donated to those in need. A two-time breast cancer survivor, Carolyn is glad to be alive and to give back. She finds strength and peace from staring at the same waters and views that captivated her parents. “The fact that it was in my family gives me some real pride—that we’ve kept it, improved upon it, but also stayed true to their vision from 40-odd years ago.” She still feels her mother’s presence, especially in a clump of Birds of Paradise, with 6-foot stalks topped with brilliant orange blooms. Though only grown in

greenhouses in our region, this exotic plant rises from the ground every spring. “My mother planted these a hundred years ago. She’s still here,” says Carolyn. When walking Grace and Sir Winston, her standard poodles, she often visits with neighbors who know her and who remember her parents. These connections, woven upon an invisible loom, form a quilt of care. For Carolyn, family and the Cove Creek community are what “home” is truly about. In the end, Carolyn and Mark have proved Wolfe wrong. They have indeed returned home and made it even better. AH

Merry

The High-Heeled Gardener

Berries By Kymberly Taylor

One sunny day in October, I glanced at my fourteen-year-old honeysuckle and noticed that its blossoms, once brimming with nectar, were deflated, about to drop to the garden floor. Sadly, I realized that the hummingbirds and summer had flown away, too. As I took a closer look, though, I saw beautiful small berries forming on each branch. Red, round, and cheery, I learned they were right on time to feed the native birds who don’t fly south in the winter. I felt this honeysuckle’s friendship, for it was not leaving me as I had thought. Though relinquishing its summer splendor, it was still preparing to give. Then, on a recent walk in Greenbury Point, I came across an incredible plant studded with sparkling blue, turquoise, violet, white, and purple berries the size of robins’ eggs. I learned it was an invasive though ornamental weed called “Porcelain Berry.” Suddenly, I understood the singular beauty and intensity of the berry, the wonder of each variation, often hidden from view. To find them, you may need to peer intensely into thickets or explore the woods, but as they twinkle amid thorns or hang in clusters from bare branches, their clear forms engraved against the sky, they are the true lights of the winter landscape. Following are a few recommendations for plants with especially bright and merry berries. Plant a few and behold the true gifts of winter. In the chaos of the holidays, they remind us to pause and take notice of nature’s great and quiet force and how it provides perfectly— not only for our spirits but also for more than 50 different species of wildlife that shelter in evergreen boughs and feed on super fruits such as Sea Buckthorn, Beautyberry, and Chokeberry. You may even wish for snow, which will surely release the berry’s pure magic.

Vol. 14, No. 6 2023 95

1. Winterberry Ilex verticillata A holly that loses its leaves in the fall, winterberry has brilliant red berries that give cheer to the winter landscape. Its leaves are not prickly (unlike the Sea Buckthorn!), so it is especially prized by florists and often used in flower arrangements, wreaths, and garlands. Origin: Native to the Eastern United States Grows: Hardy from -40 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit, grows well in Maryland’s Zone 7b Water: Moist to wet soil Light: Full sun to partial shade Mature size: 3 to 12 feet tall and wide Attracts: Attracts and feeds a wide variety of birds throughout the winter, including cedar waxwings, scrub jays, robins, ducks, and wild turkeys. Fun fact: Native Americans brewed the bark of the winterberry to reduce fever, which may be how it received its common nickname, “fever bush.”

2. Beautyberry Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii Beautyberry is well-named, with spectacular, vivid violet berries appearing in autumn. Happy in sun or partial shade, you’ll need to plant more than one to ensure pollination and, therefore, fruiting. Origin: Native to America and the Southeastern United States Grows: Zones 7 to 11 Water: Well-drained soil, drought tolerant when established Light: Light shade Mature Size: 3 to 8 feet Attracts: Due to its high water content, beautyberry attracts more than 40 species of birds, as well as foxes, opossums, raccoons, armadillos, and squirrels. Fun fact: In the early 20th century, farmers would crush beautyberries and place them under their horse’s harness to repel mosquitoes.

3. Chokeberry Aronia arbutifolia Native to the U.S. and Canada, this shrub has great fall foliage and fruit that turns bright red in the winter. Aronia is self-fertile and, unlike most hollies, will produce highly edible and nutritious berries on a single plant. Origin: Native to Eastern North America Grows: Hardy from -30 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit (Zones 4 to 9) Water: Needs well-drained soil Light: Full sun to partial shade Mature size: 6 to 8 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide Attracts: Grouse, cedar waxwings, thrushes, northern flickers and thrashers Fun fact: Despite its name, chokeberry has superior edible and medicinal qualities, including higher antioxidant levels than blueberries, pomegranate, açai, goji, or mangosteen. Three B Architecture

4. Snowberry Symphoricarpos albus Snowberry is a hidden gem, both beautiful and nutritious for wildlife and pollinators. A member of the honeysuckle family, it is very easy to grow. To maintain, simply prune away some of the suckers every few years to keep it in check. Origin: Native to North and Central America Grows: Zones 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 Water: Dry, medium, moist Light: Full sun, partial shade Mature size: 3 to 6 feet tall Attracts: Birds, pollinators, deer resistant Fun fact: When fishing, Native American hunting tribes would create a small dam and release crushed berries into the water. The toxic berries would attract the fish, suffocate them, and bring them up to the surface.

5. Porcelain Berry Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata Resembling miniature birds’ eggs, the dazzling berries start out white but gradually darken to shades of pink, lavender, turquoise, blue, and black as they age. The traits that make it a popular garden plant—such as its ground coverage, climbing habit, and pest resistance—also make it a robust invasive species. Prune hard and eliminate suckers. Origin: Native to Asia Grows: Zones 5 to 9 Water: Moist, well-drained soil, drought tolerant once established Light: Full sun to part shade Mature Size: If not controlled, can grow more than 20 feet tall Attracts: Many birds and small mammals Fun fact: In traditional Chinese medicine, stems and roots were used as anti-inflammatories, diuretics, and anti-hepatotoxins.

6. Sea Buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides Found naturally growing along the coastline and on farmsteads, Sea Buckthorn is packed with vitamins C, A, and E. Deciduous silver-green narrow leaves have yellow flowers in spring, followed by orange berries through winter. Plant both male and female plants for pollination. Origin: China, Russia, Mongolia, Northern Europe Grows: Hardy down to Zone 3 Water: Do not overwater. Prefers subsoil moisture. Light: Full sun to light shade Mature size: 13 to 20 feet tall, spreading 11.5 feet Attracts: Berries produced in autumn and winter are an important food source for migrant birds, such as fieldfares and redwings. At other times of the year, many species of birds feed upon the insects living in it. Fun fact: Sea Buckthorn is a “super-fruit” high in antioxidants, vitamin C, carotenes, and amino acids. Berries can be crushed to make juice, jam, jelly, ice cream, mousse, and liqueur. AH

Sail

THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS BY ROBERT E. HAYWOOD

Travel

In the beginning, God created the British Virgin Islands for sailors. Or, at least, it would seem so. With more than fifty islands making up this archipelago with perfect temperatures and dependable trade winds, you can sail from island to island and experience the different textures of each tropical haven. Because there are so many islands, you can always see land—if this matters to you—and find the lee side of an island when foul weather approaches. To sail these waters, you need great skill in handling a large boat and many years of experience with all the intricacies of sailing, including boat safety. A thorough understanding of navigation, changing weather conditions, and winds is paramount. As we learned, a squall can sneak up, and then you find yourself navigating a storm. We are fortunate in Annapolis because you can learn these skills with a series of classes at one of the excellent local sailing schools and then master them with repeated practice on the Bay. Instead of managing all the facets of sailing yourself, you can hire a captain

and even a chef, and many people do. However, we only wanted to bareboat charter, which means that we sailed and provisioned the boat ourselves. We chose a 46-foot Lagoon Catamaran through Horizon Yacht Charters in Tortola, one of the companies recommended to us by several Annapolitans who have sailed the BVIs numerous times. At this date, these charters range from $1,000 to over $3,000 a day, depending on the size and style of your boat, and much more if you add a captain, a chef, and a hired crew. Obviously, this is a pricy getaway, but cruising these Caribbean-blue waters is thrilling and unforgettable for those who love to sail. Several other charter companies are also good, so do the research to find the best boat and rate for you. One nice thing about Horizon is that it is located at the Nanny Cay Resort and Marina in Tortola. This marina has a grocery store underneath its office, so you can provision your boat right before boarding. At the outset of our 8-day voyage, we had big plans to cook dinner on the boat most nights. However, after a 3 to 4-hour sail and some snorkeling, once we found and secured a mooring ball, we were ready to relax. It was tempting and easy in the late afternoon to hop on our dinghy to visit each island’s colorful bars and restaurants. This is one of the best parts about sailing the BVIs: the chance to experience the local culture and cuisine of many different islands in a relatively short span of time. Also, there are many services just for boaters. For example, at Jost Van Dyke, we

108

ANNAPOLIS HOME

were greeted very early in the morning by a local on his skiff and purchased fresh empanadas cooked that morning by his aunt. At other harbors, which become like small floating villages, the locals who pull alongside in their boats have ice for sale and offer to dispose of your trash for a small fee. These are the small, time-saving luxuries a sailor learns to appreciate. For our 46-foot catamaran, we needed a crew. There were six of us, with Kymberly Taylor serving as our captain. Although we met regulars who sail large yachts with as few as two or three crew members, we welcomed all these hands on board so that we could alternate tasks. In addition to a captain, at the very least, you need a strong and stable person to hook the mooring ball to secure your boat overnight. There is now an app where you can reserve a mooring ball in advance, and it is a good idea to do so. Depending on the season, the mooring balls can be in short supply. Because Annapolis and the Eastern Shore are nautical towns, many people in the area have sailed the BVIs. Most of the islands are uninhabited, but there are plenty of inhabited islands to visit, and everyone seems to have their favorite. In 2017, Hurricane Irma, a brutal Category 5 storm, caused enormous damage, but the BVIs have come a long way in rebuilding the infrastructure. Our charter company suggested a personal itinerary for us—one that suited our time frame and travel plans. Much information is available online, so take some time and enjoy the process of planning your own visit to this sailor’s paradise. Here are just a few of our favorite spots:

NORMAN ISLAND

VIRGIN GORDA

Norman Island is just under three miles long and only accessible by boat. Many claim it was this island that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Treasure Island. The island is currently owned by Henry Jarecki, an academic, businessman, and scion of a shipping family, but boaters are still allowed to visit. For lunch or dinner, visit the local restaurant Pirate’s Bight, which serves typical island food like jambalaya, snapper, and swordfish.

Virgin Gorda, the third-largest island (Tortola is the largest), is known for its baths consisting of gigantic granite boulders and half-submerged rocks on the southern shore of the island. Here, you can swim, snorkel, and explore these primeval grottos and tunnels at your leisure. On the northern mountainous side, you can hike and enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding islands.

In the evening, ride your dinghy (or even swim) to the infamous floating pirate ship restaurant and bar, Willy T. Join the fun by jumping off the ship’s roof into the water below. The party can get loud at night, so if you are a light sleeper, you will not want to moor your boat too close to Willy T’s. THE INDIANS

JOST VAN DYKE Although Jost Van Dyke is one of BVI’s smallest islands, it has great local Caribbean charm and casual beach dining. We enjoyed Foxy’s Taboo, which has been around since 1968, and the modest Gertrude’s Beach Bar and Grill. The menu is alos typical to almost all the islands: Jerk Chicken, Conch Fritters, Mahi-Mahi with Creole Sauce, and Spiny Lobster.

North of Norman Island, you can spend a half day snorkeling at “The Indians,” a collection of 60-foot rock formations that resemble an Indian headdress. Here, you will discover superb scenery and some fabulous snorkeling or diving.

These spots are only the beginning; we could have easily visited a different island every day over our 8-day adventure. It’s cliché to call a Caribbean adventure “paradise,” but on a sunny day or a rainy afternoon with a double rainbow spanning the horizon, it is places like the BVIs that give the word a modern meaning. Straight Up on Dining Out

LEO

Casual Sophistication By Christine Fillat Photography by Stephen Vilnit 116

ANNAPOLIS HOME

There’s been a lot of buzz about Leo, Annapolis’ newest restaurant from Hilarey and Brian Leonard. This husband and wife team who own two Washington, D.C. bars— Lost & Found and Free State—now live in Annapolis. After a recent meal, there is no doubt the accolades are well deserved. Housed in an unassuming West Street building, this restaurant offers a pleasent interior. There is a casual sophistication to Leo. Could this vibe be due to the D.C. connection? This is the sort of place where you could spend many an evening trying all the interesting things on the menu: items like Susquehanna Snakehead, broiled oysters, or a fried chicken sandwich. We enjoyed the Last Dance, a pretty mezcal cocktail with cranberry, lime, and Cocci Rosa. Other notable drinks: the sparkling Rosé Cava and a glass of the Hémonière Sauvignon Blanc. Along with a host of wine options, the bar features a thoughtful selection of craft beers. Chicken Liver Mousse is a seasonal first-course treat featuring a cute Ball jar of whipped mousse garnished with micro greens and served alongside coarse mustard, pickled onion and cucumber, and crusty rounds of toasted bread. This mousse is suave (not your grandma’s chopped liver!)—just the thing to start out with on a crisp fall evening. Scallops are seared and served with fennel slaw, grapefruit beurre blanc, delicate pieces of grapefruit, and a smattering of basil oil. The scallops are perfectly seared and completely satisfying. We love the pairing of the savory and the citrus. The rockfish is super buttery, served with bitter, tangy greens, red pepper purée, and a confetti of shiitake mushrooms. It would have been nice to have more mashed cauliflower to foil all the other strong flavors. Leo offers up a selection of cheeses. Curious to try local cheeses, we found the Bay Blue, a blue cheese from Chapel’s Creamery in Easton, to be quite flavorful. Prairie Tomme is a raw sheep’s cheese from a farm in Missouri with an evocative name: Green Dirt Farm. This cheese is very fresh and creamy. Cheeses come served alongside herbed walnuts, mustard, and a dab of honey. The cheese is a superb nibble. “The art of fine cooking is impressive with some of these dishes,” touted my dining companion, indicating the towers of potato pavé that the staff coin “potato city” because of the way they tower above the flawlessly cooked slices of steak. The steak is delicious, the potatoes are a mini-high-rise buttery marvel, the mustard greens are tangy; a horseradish cream and toss of pea shoots round out this well-considered dish.

AHM Rating

Kudos to the chef for having a dedicated vegan dish on the menu. If only the sunflower pesto risotto had been as good as the other dishes we had. It came to the table warm, not hot. At first, it tasted good, with lots of diced summer squash and a puddle of herb oil. But after the first few bites, the plate settled into blandness. Were that the risotto had some element to make it really special.

Design & Décor

Dessert was a smash with brioche bread pudding. Simultaneously pillowy and crunchy with a honey glaze, it came with a smattering of custard and a scoop of melty vanilla ice cream—a delightful ending for a delicious meal from the latest and greatest place to eat in Annapolis.

Service

The menu is thoughtful and contains many treats. Leo is the new kid on the block but deserves to be your new friend in Annapolis. AH
