Sheringham Carnival Parade 2022

nghha a m m Inndd d eepppe e nnd d eenntt

The long awaited Carnival Parade made its triumphant return down Sheringham High Street on a shortened route in front of hundreds of awed spectators on Wednesday the 3rd of August

Other notable exhibitions of the parade included: the gilt splendour of the Three Golden Kings; a terrifying paper dragon; the lively and exquisitely dressed members of the Tyneside Club dressed as characters from the Greatest Showman; and of course, the ever impressive Viking Longship, representing the Viking Festival, bravely defended by warriors in chainmail

All in all, the weather was excellent, and after three years, the parade was a welcome return of one of Sheringham’s summer highlights

Serving the Community with New Life

Carnival Chairman, Stuart McClean, was delighted with the turn out to the parade and had nothing but gratitude for the hard work of the volunteers and the support of the town for turning up

As I write this the TV is telling me it is six mon since the conflict in Ukraine stated (or at leas escalated) and it occurs to me that the media h ‘ gone off the boil’ a bit on the impact the war having on the Ukrainian people I’m also min that the Festive Season is not that far away, traditionally a time of coming together and celebrating With so many people displaced by the war, this year will be a very different one for them So maybe now is the time to consider what we can do to let them know they are not forgotten Look out for opportunities to donate something which would bring a little cheer to them, the necessities are important but also toys and treats for the children There are lots of charities collecting for Ukraine, but please make sure you choose genuine fundraising organizations

Meetings start 7:30 and the talk will start around 8pm, though the length of talks remains variable, depending on the speaker

It sounds like a very interesting and informative speech about a topic that is very current, given the war in Ukraine

A Note from the edi

On that theme, but closer to home, the cost of living crisis is worsening, and many families will soon be having to make the choice between heat or eat We are all going to experience increased fuel bills and inflation, but if you can donate just one item for the Food Bank when you do your weekly shop it all helps If you receive vouchers from supermarket reward schemes, consider donating those to the Food Bank as these can purchase items needed for food parcels Coming together and helping each other has always got us through historically, we just have to what we do best again

Farewell and thanks to Rosemary Williamson

Our contractors completing the upgrade works have worked closely with Natural England to ensure that our new streetlights are specifically designed to be much more sympathetic to the wildlife and biodiversity around us, so all the new LED lamps that will be fitted will be yellow rather than the traditional white and the design will provide a softer light which once fitted, and can be dimmed if/when required

want managing your affairs, as the Deputy is chosen by the Court, not you It is better to make a Lasting Power of Attorney as it is quicker, cheaper and you choose your Attorney

At Clapham & Collinge LLP we have a team of expert lawyers who provide advice and assistance in the preparation of your Lasting Powers of Attorney to make sure they are right for you and reflect your wishes

There may be a time when you can no longer share of communicate what you think, or you cannot make decision over your finances or legal affairs. This may be due to the development of a medical condition such as dementia If you are affected by dementia you will need to consider the legal and financial implications for you and your family

Why is a Will important?

Lin Whitehead, Partner, professional Member of Solicitors for the Elderly and Court of Protection Solicitor said ‘‘Here at Clapham & Collinge LLP, our lawyers are keen to do what they can, having seen first hand the devastating affect this condition has on the families who care for those diagnosed with dementia

We also register the documents as soon as they are prepared to ensure that they can be used straight away if needed To find out more or to arrange an appointment, please contact us today on 01263 823398, email enquiries@clapham collinge co uk or visit www clapham collinge co uk

A Deputy does the same job as an Attorney, but the application is time consuming, expensive and may not result in the person / people you

You will need to have capacity to make or change an existing Will

Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions and choose who they go to Wills can be put in place using Trusts to protect your property and to ensure beneficiaries in receipt of means tested benefits don't lose their entitlements through an inheritance

Why is a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney important?

Following a diagnosis of dementia you may be worried and it makes good sense to take steps to ensure financial matters are taken care of You should check you are getting all the help and state benefits you are entitled to, e g do you qualify for Attendance Allowance?

Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place is just as important as having a Will

If you have not made an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney it is still possible for someone who care for you to be appointed on your behalf to take decisions for you You would need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship

It gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if you become unable to make decisions for yourself and it enables people you choose to have access to your finances to make payments on your behalf

The Financial consequences of Dementia

World Alzheimer's Month is an annual international event held in September and run by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI). The aim of the month is to raise awareness and challenge stigma surrounding Alzheimer's and dementia This year ’s theme is ‘the power of knowledge’, so we’ve prepared an article on the legal consequences of dementia which highlights the need to plan for later life

When you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia you should consider whether two legal documents are in place a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney

If you have dementia you may still be able to make a new Will or change your Will, but you should speak to your solicitor who may also need to contact your GP to check you do have capacity

If you lose the ability to manage your own financial affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf

Ensuring you have the correct legal documents in place and forward planning can protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of an incapacitating illness such as dementia, an accident or injury. I always advise my clients to plan ahead for later life and have those important conversations with their family and friends while they can ’’

We are honoured that Mike and Malcolm advised on the design in advance and were present with us for its official inauguration We could not be more grateful to Colin, who has brought his unique talents and personality to the artwork and who represents the very best of our Sheringham community Many local residents and visitors have stopped and chatted to Colin and ourselves whilst the work was in progress and we hope many more will enjoy it, now and in the future ”

The mural depicts family members at work, painted at the former boat builders workshop at 1, The Old Boathouse, in historic Lifeboat Plain It draws on old photographs held at Sheringham Museum and imagines the building of the Windsor Rose, one of the last crab boats to be built in Sheringham and still able to be seen within the museum itself.

Today, 1, The Old Boathouse is a thriving holiday business, attracting visitors to stay in Sheringham, enjoying both the historic building and surroundings and its closeness to the beach The current holiday premises already enjoys a Blue Plaque from the Sheringham Society to mark its historic status, whilst the new mural means it will now also be included in the Sheringham Art Trail

Richard Howitt said: “This is a brilliant piece of artwork, bringing Sheringham’s most famous boat builders back to life It will mean every one of our visitors can be part of the story of the building and will help to sustain its very special history for the next generation

“The style means it is both a colourful and striking addition to the street scene at one of Sheringham’s key tourist spots, but also enjoys a realism which means someone approaching from the beach or along the promenade, could almost believe that the boat builders are working today

Sheringham is home to a number of murals at local places of interest, reflecting its fishing heritage, prominent local characters and its location on the prehistoric ‘deep history’ coast Many of these have been painted by or in conjunction with Colin Seal

The latest work by the town’s much loved community artist, seventy eight year old Colin Seal, was officially inaugurated by two surviving members of the Sheringham’s Emery boat building family, Mike and Malcolm Emery. Five generations of Emery’s worked in the boat building business, founded by Lewis ‘Buffalo’ Emery in 1860 Mike and Malcolm Emery are great, great grandsons to Lewis and both continue to live locally

New Mural Brings Boat-Building Back to Sheringham

A new mural recreating Sheringham’s most famous and its last boat building family, was unveiled at the site of their original business, on Wednesday 31st August.

Unveiling the new mural: (left to right) Colin Seal (artist), Peter Radcliffe (Mayor), Mike Emery and Richard Howitt

The brainchild for painting the new mural came from 1, The Old Boathouse’s current owners, Richard Howitt and Diana Sutton, who approached Mr Seal to do the work

The colour of a person’s urine will also provide an indicator of whether they are well hydrated the darker it is, the more fluid is required

It is important to stress that symptoms of dehydration can be akin to those of dementia with changes in mood, confusion, impaired thinking and an increase in falls

At the Age Concern North Norfolk Day Centre, we can observe and monitor fluid intake but keeping cool required some additional response

Often dogs will show excessive thirst and frequent urination, increased appetite and therefore weight gain. Some owners may notice that their dog starts to get a pot bellied appearance, hair loss and thin skin. Other symptoms which can be seen are excessive panting, muscle loss or weakness, lethargy and increased frequency of urinary and skin infections.

However, Cushing’s disease can be successfully managed enabling your dog to return to their normal lifestyle Often the treatment of choice is a tablet which is given once a day and acts by reducing the production of cortisol by the adrenal glands

Cushing’s disease (also called hyperadrenocorticism) is caused by an overproduction of cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid hormone This overproduction is usually due to a benign tumour of either the pituitary gland (a gland found at the base of the brain) or one of the adrenal glands (found in the abdomen, next to each kidney)

Cushing’s disease will progress if left untreated and can increase the risk of your dog developing other, potentially serious, conditions for which treatment can be intensive and costly. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, pancreatitis and increased susceptibility to infection

How is Cushing’s disease diagnosed in dogs?

Although this sounds a little scary, it’s a disease we know a lot about and can control well to give pets a normal life

If your dog is suspected to have Cushing’s syndrome your vet will perform blood tests specific for Cushings disease and known as either an ACTH stimulation test or a low dose dexamethasone suppression test.

What is Cushing’s disease?

Your vet will advise a blood test shortly after starting the medication and at intervals throughout your pets life to monitor how your dog is responding to treatment and ensure they are receiving the most effective dose

Cushings Syndrome

What are the signs of Cushing’s disease in dogs?

As pet owners we all understand how important it is to be watching for signs of disease so this week we focus on a particular disease seen in dogs and called Cushing’s disease

How is Cushing’s disease treated?

The station is indebted to the many businesses in town that supported us by donating wonderful prizes for the tombola and putting up posters in their windows With the support of the town and visitors alike we can continue to offer a lifesaving service 24hrs a day, 365 days a year and are truly grateful to all that help us provide such a great RNLI station for the town

Courier Fraud happens when a fraudster contacts a victim by telephone claiming to be a police officer, bank or from a government department, among other agencies A number of techniques will then be adopted in order to convince the victim to hand over their bank details or cash, which may then be passed on to a courier

• Always request Photo ID and if unsure call the police

Special thanks must go to young Elias Fenn, 8 years old, from Sheringham who raised £130 selling painted pebbles and brought the money to the station (where he was photographed with Stormy Stan)

• Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ringtones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number. Ensure you can hear a dialling tone before calling police or use a friend or neighbour's telephone instead

• If you have already given your bank details over the phone or handed your card details to a courier, call you bank straight away to cancel the card

Deputy Senior Helmsman Chris Taylor said “We are so grateful to all of the volunteers and members of the public that came along to make this a such a fantastic Lifeboat Day.

Lifeboat Day for Sheringham RNLI since 2019 and it was a huge success With over £2000 raised for the RNLI breaking all previous Sheringham Lifeboat Day records

The incidents happened in: Sheringham, North Norfolk sometime between Thursday 18 August and Monday 22 August Approximately £6,000 was taken

Police are urging residents to be vigilant following a number of telephone scams across the county.

The day was concluded with Sheringham Salvation Army band and members of the local churches joining forces in the annual Lifeboat Service with an impressive solo performance by the talented Connor Winston, from the Lighthouse church, and a reading by Sheringham’s Mayor Peter Ratcliffe

The local HM Coastguard team put on a cliff rescue demonstration, the RNLI mascot Stormy Stan was out and about, and children and adults alike competed to see who could throw the iconic yellow RNLI welly the furthest in the Welly Wanging competition

We recommend our Doctor Formula Serum and recovery cream to compliment this procedure

• Once you’re sufficiently numb, therapist will begin by applying the hand piece to your skin, covering the entire treatment area

Many very fine needles penetrate the skin momentarily and RF energy flows between needle tips causing precise heating under the skin layers to create new collagen This avoids heating the top layers of the skin so downtime is minimal and it is safer for darker skin types. You get benefits of both micro needling and radiofrequency energy

• Skin laxity

• As the micro needles puncture your skin and penetrate the dermis, they will emit RF energy as heat. You may feel a warm, prickling sensation.

• Uneven skin texture • Large pores

• Acne scars

The recovery is very quick You may see minor pinpoint bleeding, may experience mild discomfort or swelling for a day or two More aggressive treatments can result is mild swelling for a few days Generally you can be back to normal activities in 48 hours Make up can be applied after 4 hours

Recently fractional micro needling devices have become very popular. Some well known devices are Morpheus8, Profound RF, Vivace, Potenza, Infini RF, Fractora RF, Genuis RF, and Secret RF. We use a Polaris RF machine, which has both minimally invasive micro needling RF and non invasive fractional RF treatment capability.

The gazebo in Sheringham Park has now reopened after extensive structural defects forced its continued closure, initially due to Covid restrictions and subsequently following inspections carried out in May 2021 The two other smaller viewing towers within the wild garden have also recently reopened following essential repairs

with the Gazebo identified by structural engineers Rossi Long Ltd were caused by the long exposure to the elements and the nature of their construction Several of the timber stair treads, platform floorboards and other handrails were affected by wet rot. Support posts had also rotted where they

Offering extensive views over the oak tree canopy to the sea and along the Norfolk coast, the Gazebo is worth the climb, which includes over 115 hillside steps and 60 steps up the tower On a clear day, the views stretch from the seaside town of Sheringham in the east to the village of Weybourne and town of Wells next the Sea in the west

‘Local running club, the Breakfast Club, kindly raised money towards this restoration project by running a marathon around Sheringham Park on Sunday 22 May Their coach, Hazel completed this task with support from other club members by running multiple laps around a mile loop at Weybourne Heath It goes without saying that we are incredibly grateful to Hazel and the other members of the Breakfast Club for their extraordinary generosity ’

The gazebo, located at the top of Oak Wood behind Sheringham Hall, was a gift of Mildred Cordeaux and was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales on 20 March 1988 It was not a feature of Humphry Repton’s original design for the park, but Mildred Cordeaux remembered an old viewing structure in the same location during her childhood.

Rossi Long designed timber repairs and bespoke new steel junction connections for areas where reforming traditional timber joints were no longer feasible The repairs were undertaken by Bawburgh Installations Ltd of Norwich

Trains can often be seen on the Poppy Line of the North Norfolk Railway as they run through the northern end of Sheringham Park The gazebo is a good place to look out for purple hairstreak (Favonius quercus) butterflies, which feed on honeydew in the oak leaf canopy over the summer months
